This week, I found myself stranded but a block away from the station. To make matters worse, I was stagnant at a busy intersection. I called up and explained my situation and Justin came right out in his personal vehicle. When all attempts to get my pickup started had been exhausted, he generously offered to tow me in. This place is one of the only places in Denver that doesnt keep their air compressors outside during the winter, which means when everyone elses air compressor goes out, this location keeps going strong. The cold definitely can crack your tires, too, so its great that this location is so reliable!! On site technicians have saved my neck. They have a full service station as well, which is wonderful for people who may have a difficult time filling their own tanks. read more

I used to love going to this place. The gas was a little more expensive, but it was nicely located, and the people here were friendly. So when I took it in for an oil change, I believed them when they told me that my brake pads were about to give and I needed a break job. Well, my father is a mechanic, so I took my car over to his place to get my brakes done a few days ago, and what did I find? The brakes were in excellent condition: the people there were bullshitting me to get more work. I won't be taking my car there again. read more

Ahh, the 8th and Downing Conoco. If this place was a mob front, it wouldn't surprise me, because FIXING CARS is certainly NOT anywhere NEAR their area of expertise. Yelp needs to allow me the ability to give zero stars here. In the past, my wife and I had occasionally brought our cars here for MINOR work, mostly because of convenience to our house and we figured "How could they POSSIBLY screw that up"? Boy, were we idiots... Our sorted history with them follows: (On my wife's car): * They drained her car's radiator for a flush, but then never bothered to reattach the top hose. (duh!) * On a different visit, they also drained the oil and then forgot to put anything back in! (luckily we live CLOSE by and I was wise enough after the radiator incident to CHECK when she got home!) * They somehow put her bike rack through their garage window. Now this is interesting for a few reasons. Their doors roll down, so I'm assuming they must have backed into the doors without opening them first?! * My wife's car had a stuck electronic lock solenoid/switch. They didn't know how to fix it, said they couldn't get parts for it (BS), and then charged us for a cleaning that didn't fix anything. We took it to another garage (not the dealer) a few days later who EASILY got around such "TREMENDOUSLY difficult" problems! (On my car) * I brought my car in for a stuck lock and they HAD IT ALL DAY and couldn't fix IT!? (they also didn't bother to call to tell me that) Well, the next day the Goodyear place downtown took care of it while I waited. * They ordered a tire for my car, and then, the tire didn't show up. OK, things happen, but did they call me to let me know? OF COURSE NOT. I have to find out 10 minutes before they were closing and my car still had a flat in the back. (And in general) * They have NEVER called when a repair was complete (EVER!) * On two occasions they have charged for "previously undiscovered" things without getting pre-authorization or even placing a courtesy call. You would think over 10 years that something would have improved here, but it NEVER does. So that's it. I'm sharing my tale and I'm done. REALLY DONE. I'm NEVER going here again! So in closing... You want gas here? Fine. You want to buy something from their beverage fridge? Great! You want to send your ex-wife, ex-boss or mother-in-law's car here for "repair" work. GO FOR IT! BUT DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE FOR REPAIR WORK UNDER **ANY** CIRCUMSTANCES!!!!! Statistically speaking, trained monkeys would have a better repair record than these guys if you let them run around with toolbelts on. I'd almost be willing to bet money on it! read more

I have been taking my cars here for 2 years now and am extremely happy with the work, service, and fair prices at 8th and Downing Conoco. My automotive stories have always been filled with woe: for I have the worst luck ever with cars. I was referred to the 8th and Downing Conoco by a friend. My relationship with 8th and Downing started in 2009 with my 1998 Camry. Like most customers I shopped around for the fairest prices, friendliest service, best recommendations and the most reasonable completion time. I understand that this is based on how many cars a shop has on their board ahead of you and although 8th and Downing were pretty busy, they beat out every dealership (no surprise there) and even the most obscure shops in every department, not to mention that if you live in the Capitol Hill area, their location can't be beat. From fixing the radiator, timing belt, windshield wipers, mysterious leaks and oil changes on my 1998 Camry to putting in a new water pump, license plate lights, co2 sensor, a transmission flush and oil changes on my 2004 Jeep, their mechanics Scott and Justin have done Grade A work every single time. I have never had a recurring issue with my vehicle once I drove it off their lot. A good mechanic is hard to find and the quality work that the mechanics here have proven to me they can do time and time again from Toyotas to Jeeps have given me something money can't buy: peace of mind. They have always called me to let me know my car is finished and ready for pickup. They also update me on exactly what happened, what is going to be repaired, and how repairs of that nature can be prevented in the future. Because I work in Fort Lupton, I've made the mistake of having taken my cars out to Meineke, Grease Monkey and Johnson Auto Plaza for something as simple as an oil change and those places have managed to overfill my transmission fluid and cause transmission problems. Ever since then I only go to 8th and Downing for my oil changes, and I have never had any problems. Not to mention I picked up my Jeep for my co2 sensor repair a few weeks ago and it has been running better than ever. When I went back to fuel up last week I asked for the mechanic who did the repair so I could let him know what a great job he did and the cashier told me that he was out dropping off an elderly customer's car to their house for them. Their service has always gone above and beyond and I highly recommend them. read more

I've been meaning to write a review for a while, because every experience I've had here has been nothing but positive. Today I took my car in to check on the brakes (I was almost sure I would need new rotors) and they did a quick diagnostic and assured me that my brakes would be fine for several thousand more miles. The last time I was in I had a tire that was low on air and assumed there was a leak -- they did every test they could and didn't find anything wrong, and sent me on my way without charging me a dime. I've had them patch a tire that I thought would need to be replaced before as well, and the one time I actually needed a new tire they found me an extremely cheap one, ordered it, and got it fixed that day. They've never been condescending or made me feel uncomfortable, and taking my car in isn't something I dread anymore. Unbelievable customer service and honesty. An ok place to stop and get gas but this little shop is a bit light on customer service when it comes to getting repairs done. I hate it when the guy behind the counter is trying to sidestep your every question because he is afraid to put a price to his work. I'm not saying that I wanted a hard figure. I posed him a very simple hypothetical. If it turns out that my car only needs brake pads, how much will it be? I also asked what it might cost if I needed rotors too. Both are very simple and common needs. He should be able to answer this. Other better shops have answered me. I should warn you that I did not in fact have my car worked on here. I just had a bad feeling about the place based on how much the avoided my questions. I did not get a friendly or helpful vibe from this place. They even tried to dodge the question about how long it would take to get to my car. I don't expect people's answers to be 100% accurate all the time, but I do expect that a service-based business be prepared to at least give me some kind of idea what I'm in for. read more

I don't know jack about cars so when my truck was overheating I panicked and went to a nearby mechanic now knowing what was the issue immediately they helped me and even showed me that I had almost no coolant they helped me and ensured I didn't have a leak very rapidly . I live close to this Conoco and took my car in to have them do a temporary fix so I could get it to a garage so it was drivable to fix. These guys are the nicest most honest car guys I have ever worked with. They were able to fix my whole front end of my car and charged me what I am pretty sure amounts to the lowest car fix amount on the planet. I will get my gas here and continue to come here for oil changes, which they are super fair on price too. They care about their customers and don't bs you on parts you need or extra services. They are there to truly help you. Being a woman, I am sometimes skeptical taking my car in for service, as I feel many other places try to tell you that you need other parts or stuff for your car. Been here a few times and used to get great service, but it's gone downhill in the last few months. The pumps are unreliable (many of their pumps are often out of service) and their staff is either extremely helpful or rude. Today, I was told I could fill up gas by a helpful employee, who went the extra mile and even gave me a tire gauge. I went outside and pulled up to the air filling station, only to be met by another worker yelling for me to get lost. After my road trip from California to Denver my car was not driving like it used to :( Gas was going like nothing, sometimes it wouldn't start, and just thinking of how much money it would be to fix whatever might of been wrong with it started stressing me out. Ma' bestie went to this Conaco and had a good experience, so I figured I might as well too! I was helped by Scott, he didn't try to d%$K me over with prices or come up with ignorant nonsense I needed for my car. I took it there on a Thursday and got my Co2 sensor fixed, oil change, brakes done, and rotors replaced and they had my car back to me by lunchtime Friday..... DAMN RIGHT! read more

For years this has been my go-to shop for anything and everything that I need from an auto mechanic and if they can't help, they will refer you to someone who can (windshield, autobody, etc). I know nothing about cars so I'm always sceptical of mechanics ripping me off with high prices, or telling me I need unnecessary work just to make a buck. So my priority is straight up professional integrity when it comes to car mechanics. This shop has never steered me wrong or made me feel like I've been swindled, they treat me (and my cars) with respect and I trust them. Secondly, knowledge and experience is top on my list too. Justin is the ASE certified mechanic on sight with a formal education who stays current with all the new auto technology so I feel safe that my car is always in good hands with the latest and greatest in the field. Scott, Jim and the whole crew are experienced mechanics, who I've noticed, work well together and share information when troubleshooting problems and issues. I've had two different cars they've cared for throughout the years with issues ranging from transmission problems to squeaky brakes or a simple flat tire. Their prices are very reasonable for the intense labor they perform especially in the winter months when it's cold. Not to mention the thought they put into making the correct diagnosis and in ordering the right parts. Just remember this is a busy little shop on Cap Hill so if you are looking for chit-chat, special treatment, or a mechanic to tell you what you want to hear, better take it elsewhere. These guys are polite, funny, sociable and eager to help, but they are above all, honest, professional and focused. I was recently in a minor car accident that left my passenger side bumper hanging post accident. I drove to this Conoco station from the accident and walked in asking for help. The staff at Conoco were so helpful and kind to help me right when I arrived. Rusty worked on my car and secured the bumper back onto my car. I've gone here for years and they've always had great service but recently they've gone downhill. Came here trying to get an oil change at 11 am and was told they weren't taking anymore for the day. Called later and asked if I brought my car in at 645 am the next day if they could do it that day and was told yes. Got up early to drop it off and was told when I got there that they already had "too many cars" and would not be able to do it that morning. The person who was working there was extremely rude as well. Unfortunately I'll have to find another place to get my oil changes as I'll never be coming back to this location. I recently had my car stolen and had to get a new ignition switch and other repairs . Once it was recovered , I encountered the general manager by the name of Justin and his apprentice Josiah. I explained the situation and then wanted an additional tuneup and for them to repair some oil leaks. No problem! They were Sincere, they talked me through what they were going to do and gave me an estimation and said that they would call me later. I was floored! Nobody had ever given me such good customer service! They followed through and had my car ready to go eight hours later; very professional. AND 7 people suggested & said to take my car to THIS Conoco. I'm glad I did. My car runs better than ever! So thank you Justin & crew for being honest mechanics & trusting people. Since I've been in Denver last May, these guys have taken great care of me every time I've come in. They've worked on two of my vehicles and have been straight about them every time. I recently went to sell my truck and they rightly pointed out that the rust on the undercarriage would eventually lead to needing to replace the leaf springs and shocks. They also suggested a tune up seeing as it is a 94 Toyota truck. When I told them I'd be selling it, they told me "well I'd love to sell you something, but this work is the kind of thing the next owner should invest in, not you." Seeing as I was asking their opinion on the work and they could have easily suggested I go through with any or all of it, I admired their honesty. I'll keep going to them for some time yet. read more

I've been going to the 8th and downing conoco for years now for oil changes to transmission problems and have never had a problem, in fact, I've always left very satisfied. Very helpful, knowledgeable guys working there. I've done my homework and their prices are extremely fare and my car always gets done in a timely manner. After reading some of the reviews I think this shop is getting the short end of the stick. Clearly one poster has an agenda for a certain other shop. If you stated you hadn't gotten your oil changed in over a year, you probably needed the check up they suggested, assuming you have neglected the oil change, there were more than likely other things that have been neglected as well. I took my car in for an oil change and in attempting to sell me a new nozzle for my washer fluid head they dislodged it broke something because the washer fluid stopped coming out of both sides all together. I brought it in for them to look at and the shop manager took about 5 seconds to look it over, said they never touched the fluid lines even though the employee who priced the nozzle told me specifically that he did. I tried to tell this to him but he told me to get out of his shop and if I didn't leave he would call the police on me for trespassing. I have been a loyal customer there for 3 years and I think the new shop manager is the issue here. Everyone else I have encountered was great but this guy, Ron I think, was terrible and anyone considering taking there car there should not because that is the type of customer service you will receive. If you have been taking your car here for years like I have I would suggest going to the Downing Street Garage because this shop cannot be trusted to even fix things they break under this manager. I called last Saturday morning because I needed my oil changed and also my headlights cleaned as they were so dirty that it was too dim to drive at night. I called ahead and spoke with someone who I thought was at this location and they said "No problem. Bring it in". When I arrived to drop my car off, the gentleman helping me informed me that they would be able to do the oil change, but didn't really do aesthetics such as cleaning headlights. I was bummed, but left my car there for the oil change. They finished a few hours later and when I came back to get the car, they had not only changed my oil at an awesome low price, but also cleaned the headlights free of charge. Everyone here was so pleasant to work with and I was so touched by their kindness and customer service, that I will be back here for sure. Getting my car serviced is hard for me, since I know so little about cars, but these people seem trustworthy and friendly. read more

Terrible. Although I didn't have an appointment, they were not busy whatsoever but told me I was too late to get an oil change two and a half hours before they closed. When they suggested I return on Saturday and I asked for an estimate, they told me that they would do a general car check up, top off all my fluids, and charge me 50 bucks (I'm used to paying $25 for an oil change). These jerks were blatantly trying to trick me into paying for a bunch of extra services I didn't need so I would end up paying double what I should have paid. What sleazeballs. Luckily, I'm no fool, so I asked if they could lower the price to perform ONLY the service I came in for (oil change). They refused. They were smoking cigarettes inside the shop (yes, the shop, not the garage), and the place smelled like an ashtray. Plus, it's owned by a giant corporation and I always try to support small local businesses. The stank of ashtray (I'm a smoker and I found it offensive) paired with the sleazeball mechanics who entirely validated the negative stereotypes surrounding men in their profession means I will never be going here again. read more

I have been living in Capitol Hill for 3 years now and I regularly take my car in for tune ups, oil changes and other engine work. I am ALWAYS completely satisfied with their work. They are honest, quick and have great knowledge. I have taken my car to a Subaru specialist before and they have informed me of the same issues but with much higher quotes. We have lived in Denver for 5 years and have taken our cars (first a Prius, now a Subaru Outback) to this service station the whole time, both for regular oil changes and other dealer-recommended scheduled maintenance. They are honest, do good work, and when some additional issue comes up, they always explain it and give us an estimate of the cost for our approval before proceeding. We had a wonderful neighborhood service station in Evanston, Illinois for many years before moving here, and I am so grateful that we've found another one. The only drawback for some people would be that you can't make an appointment for service; you drop off your car and they work on a first-come/first-served basis. But I highly recommend them.
