Sorry for the length... Just want to preface this by saying I'm not the one paying for the service but I help my father with technical stuff. He has been with consolidated communications before fairpoint was bought out by them, and before fairpoint was bought out by verizon. He has been on a 15mb/2mb plan for about 2 years now. Our first problem was when consolidated first bought out fairpoint, my father wanted to switch out his modem for something more modern (it only had wireless A/B, it could also not handle throughput well and even wired devices had unstable signal and the range was awful) . So I helped him pick out a router which I knew could also be used as a modem/router combo. Outside of our house, there is a wall mounted fiber box which has two connections. One was cable which is what the old modem used, and the other was ethernet. I had my dad call consolidated because the connection had to be switched on their end. They said it could not be done and that we could not use a router as a modem (which I told them it was a combo). After about a month of back and forth, they finally sent a technician out to our house and when he checked it out he said "Oh this just has to be switched out on our end." YEA I KNOW. I had been saying it for a month. After that our connection had been fairly smooth right up until about a few weeks ago. Then I had noticed things like major lag in gaming, voip functions such as zoom calls, or game chats cutting out. I had run a speed test and noticed that we were getting about 14.25mb down, which is slightly slower than usual when no devices were being used (usually its about 14.75) but ok because it's never going to reach exactly 15mb, but our upload speed was all over the place. Prior to the issues I would check it occasionally and we would get a consistent 1.70-1.90mb up unless other devices were being used. Now I check it and it would be as low as .3mb up. Other times it may start at about a 1.10mb and immediately start dropping and get as low as .7mb. It never reaches it's normal speed. I check it in the middle of the night sometimes as well because I figure MAYBE there is extra network traffic in our area during the day but the issues persist. I have troubleshooted my router, rebooted it, made sure to have only one device connected during a speedtest, turned off QoS settings, re-enable QoS settings, tried disabling any firewall settings, checked for new firmware which there wasn't, and I reinstalled the current firmware). We called the consolidated communications service department and explained the situation. All they can check on their end is whether or not we are getting service because all their computers tell them is something to the effect of "Service = OK/Not OK". They cannot check that we are getting the correct service, only that we are getting ANY service. After running the speed test several times with the service person on the phone and telling him the numbers (which again dropped as low as .4mb up) he said that it is NORMAL for the upload speed to be vary and be below the recommended speed and that unless we are doing a lot of uploads then it shouldn't be an issue and they couldn't send a technician without a fee. UMM, no it is not normal to drop down to less than a quarter of the speed my father is paying for when for the past two years we were consistently closer to 2mb then we were to 1mb. And it DOES cause issues. Ever tried having a voice chat when every other word cuts out? Playing certain online games lag and disconnect like crazy. He basically told us there was nothing they could do because we were getting service and since we are using a third party router they can't service us anyway. So there's no way they can check what kind of speeds we are getting coming into the house? And they can't send a technician to check we are getting the service that's being paid for without charging us? That's ridiculous. The only reason I'm giving them two stars instead of one is because of the billing department, which my father called after he got off the phone with the service department (he was thinking about closing his account and switching services to xfinity which he doesn't really want to do because they are already close to a monopoly as is). My father was paying about $60 for 15mb/2mb and I knew that was pretty abysmal for todays standards. On their website they were offering about three times the speed for less money. The billing department said we were absolutely right and they offered to upgrade us to 50mb/50mb connection and they were going to charge him $25 less per month. I mean better late then never, they never should have kept charging him that price for that service but at least the billing department was understanding and did the right thing. The funny thing is they have to send a technician to our house now anyway to upgrade some cabling now and they are going to do it for free while charging us less money! read more

If I could give a 0 I would. We often have region-wide landline outages and today is no exception. Happened also within the last two weeks. Technical support / outage support every single time spends hours or even days chasing their tails, saying "we don't see an outage", but no visit to any of the homes/businesses that are affected, simply an occasional call to my cell "is your phone back on?". "Well, NO, because YOU HAVEN'T REPAIRED IT!" They don't even call it to see the result. It can take 3 or 4 transfers on every contact before they even find our account. We are now closing in on 12 hours with no phone service. Not even 911 works - AGAIN. DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

Recently I renewed my contract with Consolidated Communications, they blatantly refused to state the contract terms in writing, or even send me an email acknowledging that I have a three year contract with them. 60% of the time when I call them I am placed on hold for 25 to 30 minutes. About a year ago, I decided to get my phone service for my business from a different provider. It literally two weeks to transfer my phone number to the new provider. These people are incompetent. Been fighting to get my landline working for three months now and first time they said it was the phone which it wasn't as the problem persists.The second time a no show and me playing phone tag with some dumbasses who can barely speak English. I was a customer since CCI was FairPoint Communications, so for nearly twenty years. I closed my account in mid-February 2026 and switched to another ISP. I was also on autopay for most of that time, but received an email saying my payment was due back in February. I called to make sure that if I paid manually, the autopay wouldn't go through as well. Well, it did, so I was double-charged for February. This, after closing my account a few weeks prior (they also don't pro-rate bills anymore, told me I didn't need to return the modem (recycle it), and that there was NO early termination fee. It's now May, and I'm still waiting, after numerous phone calls and hours, way too many hours, spent on the phone, to be refunded the almost one hundred dollars that they owe me for the double payment, and they're taking on an ETFee after they said they wouldn't. I'm so glad I got out and will be a lot happier when I receive my refund. I'll keep calling until that check is in my hands. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH CCI or Fidium Fiber. read more

Very unprofessional communication by service support staff . I called on Monday to add service to our new home we were moving to was told the address needed to be inputted into their system and it would take up to 72 hours for that to go through so I called after 72 hours sat on the phone with representative for 45 minutes while he attempted to make an account only to then realize the address still had not been added . I was told to call back or that they would call me when the address was added they never called me I called on Friday of that same week they said the address had been added finally but unfortunately their servers were down and they could not make the account at the time and to call back again . I needed internet in my new home the following Monday and they could not tell me for certain that that could be possible . As much as I do not like Spectrum that is the only other provider in my area so I will not be returning to Consolidated for internet and I would advise them to either train the staff more effectively with communication skills and or update their equipment and systems so they do not keep having system errors . read more

THE WORST. we have had problems from day one and they have refused to come and actually fix ANY of them. the wifi quality itself is trash and doesn't work at all when it is "working" and it's way overpriced for 5 mb. we have requested they come to the property and fix our system and every single time they said they've "fixed it from an outer source" and won't even show up. our wifi have worked 2 days in the past week and they REFUSE to actually show up and fix it, but they'll "fix it" from their computer, which makes is work for a matter of hours before it stops again. they're a JOKE do NOT go through these people, they'll just take your money. read more

I am so thoroughly fed up with this company that the second another service is available in my area I will switch. Their customer service is populated with people in an out of country call center who are totally ineffective and are taught to repeat words like, "so sorry" "I understand" and "I am here to help," and then nothing happens. You are given a trouble ticket and then no one ever shows up to service your equipment. I call three times per day and get the same "someone will be there between 8 and 5" and every day it is a no-show. I am on day 5 without internet and even speakING with a supervisor did not help. I work from home and am unable to get anything done. I can't even run to the market for fear I will miss the service vehicle should it show up. Bad bad company. read more

This is hands-down one of the WORST companies if had the displeasure of dealing with!!! My Mom passed away so I called all of her subscriptions to cancel them. I called before the next billing period and assumed it was taken care of. Ha! They billed for another month. So I called and sat on hold for another 40 minutes and told them what happened. "Ohhh so sorry...not sure what happened...lets take care of this for you. You'll be getting that refunded in a check" blah blah blah. Then yet ANOTHER month was taken out. So AGAIN ...sitting on hold, only to get the wrong department! So yes, on hold again for another 20 minutes (because they're apparently very busy. Go figure. So now, 3 phone calls, 2 extra bills paid and a total of about 2 hours of my time (and counting) and I'm still trying to get this sorted.I've been informed that this was never closed (I closed it TWICE now, not counting today as well) What is wrong with these people???? I mean they;re nice enough but who's dropping the ball? Is it them? The computer system? What?? It's hard enough to cope with the loss itself but then to have to deal with a company that consistently RIPS PEOPLE OFF is absolutely inexcusable!!! How many instances has this happened in the same situation or the people are just elderly and they get away with taking payment after payment for MONTHS!! Worse experience ever. Stay away from Consolidated Communications Fiber optics!!!!! I've had Consolidated Communications for quite a few years now since they first started running lines for fiber. Fidium wasn't around. At first we were paying $90 a month on a probationary period, jumped to $200, called to cancel, dropped to $100 and been paying that for the past year. We lost service last week (the tech who was from Fidium said someone just unplugged our house for some reason) and sold us on a great deal through Fidium that everyone is jumping on. Turns out that because I've been a loyal customer I don't get any deals. I have to continue to pay double. If I do switch I have to pay $200 transfer fee and will still cost me $100 per 1 gig service. Xfinity is going to give me a better deal so I'll be switching. Edit: Fidium wants to give me the deal but it won't process on their end. Makes them call Consolidated who then tells them no. read more

Complete Disaster. And the only reason I use Consolidated is because I have no other choice. (apparently, there's some sort of law in Maine that says you can't have one company servicing two accounts at the same address, for some silly reason. The company phone-pay system would not accept the PIN I've been using for 13 years. I was going to call Monday to get to the bottom of the problem. But of course they're not available on Labor Day - ONE OF FOURTEEN OFFICIAL HOLIDAYS ON THE CALENDAR. I think it would be easier for them to publish the days they actually work, as opposed to the days they don't. But the CONVENIENCE fee to make a payment over the phone is now just under FIVE DOLLARS, as opposed to the slightly less than THREE dollars it was when I first opened the account. So this will be the last phone call I make to them. I'm sure they'll enjoy waiting for a good old fashioned check in the mail from now on. Thanks Maine! And thanks Consolidated.. The simple task of porting my consolidated communications business landline phone to a mobile company has, to date, taken 26 DAYS and i am still not ported. 8+ hours on the phone, mostly on hold. Conference calls among my new carrier, consolidated and me. Everything to no avail. A customer service representative actually told me today, May 13, 2025, that she, AND NO ONE IN HER DEPARTMENT, INCLUDING SUPERVISORS, had any way to contact the porting department to help me out. Not my service. My boss and his wife have Consolidated Communications at home. They are 91 and 88 years old. They have had no land line for 10 days. Could not get an appointment to have a technician come out for 7 days in spite of the fact that she explained their age and that they needed the line in case there was a medical emergency. The day of the appointment arrived and the technician emailed her saying the problem was resolved, but land line was still not working and she never saw him. I called to reactivate the work order and insisted they return that day and that they CALL her on her land line to insure that it was really fixed. They promised to come back and "She may not see anyone if they can fix it from outside". I called at the end of the day they said the technician was there working but "She may not see him". Lies. It's been another 3 days and it's still not fixed. Completely unacceptable. I explained that her cell phone has no service from her house and that if there was an emergency they would not be able to get help, but that doesn't seem to matter. NEGATIVE STARS... This company would be out of business if it weren't the only option in many areas. I didn't think that their taking over Fairpoint could worsen my absolutely terrible service, but Consolidated managed. My internet shuts off frequently, requiring modem reboots, often 5 + times a day. Fairpoints' internet techies were truly skilled, and had options for remote assistance, and there was a router web page that I could access for diagnostics on my own, or along with a tech. Consolidated's techs are terrible, seemingly wholly untrained, apparently only able to talk a customer through a modem reboot. I can always hear multiple conversations in the background, and perhaps that is why the agents never listen to me at all. It increasingly feels like I am being pranked. In the last 2 years my speeds have gotten worse, often 2mb or less, and the solution has always been that I buy a higher speed plan. Agents have never been able to explain why a "up to 20mb download" plan would provide faster service than the extremely rare maximum 6 mb I get on my "up to 10mb download" plan. That disingenuous phrasing, "up to" means that even .0001mb download speed would be acceptable under my plan. Consolidated's prices have steadily crept up, while the services' qualities have shot downward. LOOK FOR ANY OTHER OPTION. read more

Numerous issues with billing and not correcting errors and keeping promises to correct billing errors. Incredibly rude and condescending that they are correct and that the customer is always wrong. The 'supervisor' even gave conflicting statements after the phone call got transferred to her. I have called and waited on hold before, for over an hour, to only be hung up on. I suppose it was people trying to get their phone call averages up or something? No clue. One time would be an 'isolated incident' - I recall this taking place at least twice, if not three times. The WORST internet I have EVER seen. I had better connections over 56k dial up! It's not even enough of a signal to log into their website to try to troubleshoot sh. I don't know how they get away with calling themselves an internet provider when there's NEVER ANY INTERNET. UPDATE: tech wasn't as painful as most ser when I finally got a hold of someone and I didn't have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get them to look into the problems soI I'm adding a star for the guy I got on the phone there. I'm also impressed that they read my review and responded so I'll give them another star for that. I'll update again after my service situation is resolved, hopefully to add more stars. UPDATE TWO: I was supposed to get a call in 24-48 hours. That was from Thursday. Finally Monday after I get said call, four days later. The absolute WORST internet company in America. If I had ANY OTHER choice, I would go with ANYONE else. They have sneaky charge practices like charging us for a box that doesn't work. They have to send a new box and charge YOU again. They have major attitude, you are stuck on hold for HOURS (I have screen shots to prove), and then hang up the call. You get transfered to ten different people. When you do set up an appointment because a tech needs to come out even if you brake a nail. Nothing can be done remotely (supposedly), they NEVER show up on the day they say and you have to be there from 8am to 5pm. You miss an entire day's worth of work only for them to NO SHOW YOU. They don't return emails. They don't return phone calls. We finally spoke with someone last month who gave us a confirmation number of our cancellation. We had an internet outage where the internet simply stopped working. Called support to troubleshoot and no issue on my end. Made a point of telling them how important it is to have our service restored. My wife and I both work from home and depend on video conference calls. Tech says she'll open a ticket. Great thank you.... or so I thought. The next day nothing happens. Call back to find out that the first support person could not open a ticket because of our account type (Fiber, no phone). Tech did not use my phone number or email to let us know or try to solve the issue. No progress on a solution. I call back the next day. Tech tells me he can't open a ticket and I should call back in 2 hours (great service). I call back and a senior tech tells me there is an issue but that the first 2 techs *should* have been able to take care of it. She schedules a tech to come to the house. The earliest they can come is 3 days out. We've already been out for 2 days. It looks like we will be out for nearly a week at this point. We both need to do our jobs. So we are using data on our cell phones and are each racking up a data charge in 5 days that equals the monthly fee. Tech finally comes to the house and finds that there is no issue on our end. Goes to the "hub" up the street and finds out that our fiber was unplugged during a repair last Thursday and not plugged back in properly. Last Thursday when our service went out. So Consolidated could not get our service call together for nearly a week to send a tech to fix a problem they created. I can see heavy snow being an issue or a tree, but this is their own incompetence. When I tell them I'm going to cancel service they tell me I'm subject to an early termination fee, but they will credit me the week. A week? At a minimum, I request the $120 in Google fi data use. The issue is not the $20 credit offered to compensate for the service being down (their fault) or my time wasted dealing with them (their fault), it's what happens the next time. BTW you can't modify or cancel your service online, you need to call for that. When you call, you get an advertisement trying to sell you something. I can't think of a more effective way for a company to tell you they don't value your time at all and see you only as a $$. If you are crazy enough to use Consolidated, document all your interactions, you'll need it later on when you go to the better business bureau and other agencies to complain. read more
