After months of stalled attempts I finally made the journey: not the quickest journey on public transportation from downtown, but not too far. A lot of the shows I want to see are on Sunday nights later, which also cramps my efforts. The old Viaduct space transformed into a music venue like no other in Chicago, with a focus on Jazz, Contemporary Art/Classical, and other innovative/improvisational ensembles. Following the New Music scene in Chicago, it is a major player in innovative programming, including the creative Spektral Quartet that I heard tonight. Bar and ability to bring drinks in the open, casual space makes this so much a better venue that more formal halls. If I only lived next door I would be there all the time.

However I think the holiday spirit got to him a couple of weeks ago because he took me to Consignment which is one of he and his wife's faves. The name is as it says - the bar doubles as a secondhand store and whatever is on display is for sale. I adored it! The service was awesome - I always love chopping it up with Black bartenders - and the crowd was very very queer. I was legitimately in heaven. So much doesn't feel safe right now - especially with the J6 goon squad running amok in Chicago trafficking people. It was nice to be among my people enjoying great drinks in a buzzy atmosphere. Because we are old, we got there by 730 on a Saturday and surprisingly it was already packed! Patience won the day though and within 45 minutes we snagged some stools against the wall. I had a great time here and hope to return!

"Welcome back." I…read morehesitate. I know with absolute certainty that I have never stepped foot in Chicago. Yet, the bartenders greet us with such a warm and friendly energy that I know with absolute certainly that I have been a regular at this bar for years. Decades. Centuries. I know within my soul that this was my go-to bar in a past life (and hopefully in the next). Just as welcoming as the awesome people are the $1 PBRs and $3 shots of tequila. And of course they hand out free hot dogs every night at midnight, which in my (intoxicated) mind was cemented as the definitive Chicago dog, even if it comes with no toppings whatsoever. And fittingly complementing the amazing energy of the bar is a 10 hour Youtube video of that memed Ukrainian kid dancing at a club playing endlessly on the TVs. Rocking sunglasses and looking like a stud, absolutely grooving without a single care in the world, and effortlessly matching every single song on the bar's playlist. That kid truly embodies the spirit of this bar. No matter what day it is, what time of day it is, or who visits, the bar's energy always works. Vibing to Black Eyed Peas on a Monday night never felt better. Imma be... back one day, rest assured. I genuinely can't wait for the next time I'm greeted with, "Welcome back."

They collected all donations and did not clarify that they were going to take 90% of them for expenses for their DJ and other costs, which is very misleading for the people donating. For the actual donated money itself after expenses were taken out, I reached out three separate times to confirm if the check was being paid and the lady three times I got completely ghosted. We never received the money, so who knows what was done with it. TL/DR: this is a warning to not partner with them for their charity bingo.

The fact that pretty much all of the 1-stars here are from entitled whiners who had issues with security or didn't like the music tells you all you need to know if you're a well-behaved adult looking for a grown-up space to safely be yourself. The staff takes security very seriously, which is absolutely vital in a club of their size that keeps the hours they do in a majority residential neighborhood. It's possible they're overly cautious sometimes, but I'd rather somewhere cared too much about safety than too little. Compared to most "underground" spots, they're downright immaculate. I adored Neo, but LB feels like dancing in someone's living room by comparison. But don't let the classed up decor fool you--the staff are nightlife industry veterans who have been over your sh*t for decades. Had a bad experience? I guarantee you were probably the wrong one.

Probably best to stick to the steaks for the mains, which is their specialty I believe. The steak sandwich (lomito) was fine. Fries are fine. The milanesa was just ok--didn't have enough seasoning. Drinks can vary, and have specific descriptions, but they are not all made how the menu says, like ice and garnishes. El chato was tasty, but the Buenos Aires de Noche was missing something. Empanadas are fantastic BUT they were out of a bunch of them and they just opened for the evening, which was unfortunate. Desserts are solid, including the flan, alfajores, mil hojas, and the vainilla y coco pastel. I recommend saving room for dessert!

This was my first time at Barra Ñ even though I've heard about it many times. It's a dark and moody vibe inside, the bar was lively and busy, and yet the table areas were pretty quiet and chill. Service was solid, all of our requests were handled quickly and pleasantly. Dani, who greeted me upon arrival and checked in on us several times, was a real sweetie. He brought a wonderful levity and energy to the entire feel of the place. He was also very helpful and constantly keeping an eye out for anything anyone needed. The food was solid. The filet was excellent and a very generous portion. Perfectly cooked to my request. The mashed potatoes were great and I ordered a side of the mushroom sauce that comes with another dish to enjoy with the potatoes and that was a great call. That mushroom sauce is so savory and delightful! Hoping to come back soon to try different drinks and more apps. The birthday dessert was very kind of the staff and really lovely!
