My color and style is fantastic! Maria is so nice and you can tell she cares about her customers and made sure I was comfortable at all times. The rest of the staff was so friendly as well. one went to the deli for me because I hadn't eaten and was starving! It's a great place where great people work! I LOVE going to get my hair done here! I've been going to them since they opened and the staff is absolutely amazing, extremely professional and I'm always satisfied with the work they do! I was in desperate need of a change as you can see in the photo attached, and Stephanie, who is one of the hairdressers at Contempo, gave me exactly what I needed and wanted. I came here to get a balayage done by Stephanie and got over grown discolored highlights. I came back to correct this, only to have my NATURAL HAIR turned green, blue, gray..... I can't even begin to explain... my hair was then STRIPPED and was yellow & just horrible. She then attempted to dye my "roots" to give me the BALAYAGE I CAME IN FOR! Fast forward. My hair was not at all what I wanted. Not only was it not what I wanted, it was dry, a strand of my hair was completely burnt. I was charged the first time 150$ I took my business else where in hopes of getting this orange brassy discolored hair fixed to what I wanted (or at least close) I ended up spending an extra 200$ on getting this mess fixed! Plus products etc. I contacted contempo hair design via there online website explaining my frustration and that I felt that I should be refunded my money for the damage and extra cost of repairing my hair color .. which shouldn't have needed repairing if it were done properly. I did not receive a reply from Cristina (owner). Mind you, she was present when all of this occurred. Any how, I hope this helps anyone who may have intentions of going to this place. I went to Contempo to get a balayage hair color process. The owner, Christina, was who I had an appoint with. When I got there she had the assistants coloring and highlighting her hair. She was going on a trip and said she needed it done. She rushed my hair color, paid no attention to how long she left the bleach on for because she was getting her color washed out and, as a result, my highlights got over- processed. When the assistant took off the folks she said "oh boy". Then had the assistant put a toner on it. The toner did not cover the unprofessional, horrible job she did on my hair (see pics). The color is split as the top of my hair is dark and the middle to ends are light with no ombré transition in between. When I asked for my money back just for the highlights, she refused. DON'T WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY AT THIS SALON. IF THE OWNER CANNOT GET A COLOR JOB RIGHT THEN WHAT DO YOU THINK THE QUALITY OF HER STAFF IS LIKE? read more

Maria did my hair and burnt about 4 good chunks of hair off. I don't care what anyone says if your a good hairstylist this should never happen. My hair has been dyed blonde plenty of times and never once broke. She left it in too long because she was to busy worrying about other customers even though I had an appointment. On top of it she didn't even blow my hair out properly or straighten so besides getting a shitty dye job my hair left still looking like shit. One employee that came in after I was about to leave asked what are you going to do to your hair today not knowing it was already done ! 240$ later my hair looked the same ! They should've showed me in the salon how much they actually burnt my hair off.. never again read more

Front desk staff sucks! Even if they were on the phone, they barely looked up at you. Also, one time the front desk girl was in the middle of the salon just chatting away. Got the groupon for the 3 Shellac manicures. You have to make sure you make an appointment, NO WALK-INS because she usually is already booked up. The manicurist was very thorough and even asked before assuming if I wanted my cuticles cut. I was there for just under an hour. The first time I went, one nail chipped the next day and I had to go back to get it fixed. Thankfully she was able to squeeze me in. The second time I went, one nail chipped about 4 days later. For my last of the 3, I chose to do white. It chipped that same day and I was just so fed up. They all ended up peeling off within 36 hours. Maybe I just use my hands a lot at work, with typing, filing, etc. but my most recent time was completely unacceptable and I had no energy to go back again, nor will I ever return. read more

Just had a fabulous shellac manicure here! She let me try different colors and was patient because I could not decide and was not feelin the pinks! I got a hot color ready to start the new year! I inquired about hair because that's what they do most. But she is a terrific manicurist and they do a great job. She took me right away because my time was limited the rest of the day. She worked with me to get the results I wanted but with a way less damaging approach, she definitely knows what she's doing! LOVE this place! This is the only hair salon I trust with my hair. One very important detail I pay close attention to is that the stylists here, especially Maria, are very attentive, professional and most importantly, fulfills the client's exact requests. I have extremely long hair and whenever I go to a hair salon and ask to trim my hair, they cut more than requested. This is the ONLY place in Yonkers I've been to so far that actually TRIMS my hair. They cater to the client, in the most respectful, professional way. I made an appointment with Maria at Contempo for a FULL HEAD OF HIGHLIGHTS I showed Maria several pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like I specifically showed her exactly how I wanted it She said no problem I said you sure u can get it like this picture ? She said yes I asked for a full head and she only did half a head and totally forgot a lot the bottom of my hair She left out gaps and large spaces that she did not high light Instead of Puting me under the dryer she made me blow dry my foiled up hair myself instead of the people who work there I had to sit there and do it myself LMFAO and the boss there said " u see what we have to go through "? Haha" she laughed Ummmm but I don't work here and I'm paying u ass holes to do my hair are u kidding me ?! The staff are so/so anf act like they are a clique from high school. My nails came out streaky and didn't cover the whole nail. My haircut was okay but kind of generic. I wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend to a friend. The prices are a little high for the service you're getting and everyone walks out of there looking the same. read more

Beware if you are doing an ombre color... Came here expecting to get a natural and soft looking ombre color on my brown hair and left with the bottom half of my hair orange and with a very obvious straight line separating the two colors. This is clearly not what I expected and is not how an ombre should look - It should blend with the shaft hair. This was a horrible dye job... Another thing was that the hairdresser freehanded my color and did not care to take the time to wrap my hair in foil which made me feel as though she was taking the easy way out and rushing. Its not like this color was cheap either... It was very expensive and for nothing because I had to chop my hair off in order to get rid of this orange, damaged, straw hair that I was sporting. Very unsatisfied and this look was extremely unflattering and even embarrassing. Elaine is an amazing stylist, I ended up booking her for my wedding last year, and I didn't think she could top that... but she has! I went in for something totally different for me, I wanted some funkier colors, and she wove the reds and purples into my hair with the balayage technique. Her love for the industry absolutely shines, she's a true artist and you can tell that she loves what she does. So glad I took a chance on a Groupon a few years back, I couldn't be happier. So I use to go to Contempo while it was still at its old location while I was in school, but stopped going there when I went away for school. Tried different places but nothing ever compared to the service they provide. I saw the sign on Central Ave again a few weeks ago as I was leaving work and was soo excited went back the next morning and made an appointment for the same day and got my hair cut! I give them 5stars because they are clean, well spoken, well behaved, and very professional with there service & recommendations to what would work for me. After my visit few weeks ago i referred 3more people who felt the same as i did after there visits. Looking forward in going back again next month. And I would continue recommending them as long the service & environment remains the same =) read more

I was in need of an alternate stylist/colorist to fix the botched up double process I had gotten at a salon I have gone to for about two years. I was also hoping to find a new salon to call home, to be comfortable with the staff and hopefully click with my own personal stylist/colorist. I was pleasantly surprised to be welcomed by a friendly staff who couldn't be more receptive in trying to help solve my problem and get me back to happy.....Christina and Stephanie were professional and caring and put a smile on my face after getting my hair exactly the way I wanted it for more than half what I paid not even a week prior!!! I went here on a recommendation from a friend. I went for a cut and color. My stylist was very sweet but kept questioning my decisions. First we started with color. She left the color in my hair for about an hour. During that time she was waiting for another clients highlights but proceeded to hang out with the girl and the girl's boyfriend. She then had to cut the girl's hair so the color was in my hair even longer. Then it came to my cut. I showed her a picture and she sounded like she understood what I wanted but in the end my cut looked nothing like the picture and just some generic layers which are not on one side of my head because I part my hair to one side. Im currently dealing with an I hate my hair phase! She then had another client after me and towards the end of my haircut I felt rushed. Overall the staff was very sweet I just think some of the stylists need training in professionalism and time management. read more
