The Messers, who own and run Contemporary Dentistry were friends of my mother and even the people that ran the daycare I went to as a child. This is what made Contemporary Dentistry seem to be a safe space to get our teeth cared for. We knew that this practice tended to charge more for their work compared to other dentists but it didn't stop us from going there for care. We also had a few surprise bills, or charges that we felt based on our insurance should have been covered. Rather than addressing these issues we let them go because we felt that they likely had good reason and bought into the ideas that our healthcare provider knows better than our insurance company.. It made sense to us so we just paid as asked and kept quiet. Not long ago my wife needed dental surgery and was told the work would cost over $3000. We were told it was not covered by our insurance. That turned out to not be true. We now know that we would have been able to get the work done under our insurance elsewhere but we were not properly informed about this reality. Instead we were led to believe that this surgery needed to be paid for out of pocket. We trusted that these people were concerned about our healthcare and well being, after all we know them personally and have since before we were clients of theirs. Trusting them was in hindsight, a serious mistake. Because of the surprise bills in the past, in combination with this experience, and my wife's frustration and intuition that we had been taken advantage of, I called the office asking if Harold Messer, the office manager/owner could call me personally so I could discuss what we had been through. I did so just after getting my own cleaning done and making an appointment to have a filling redone that had chipped/failed. Jen, at the front desk, assured me that Harold would give me a call to discuss our experience. At this point, I still believed that this was the place I would get my teeth taken care of and that the issues we were experiencing were just mistakes that could be owned and improved upon. I felt like my phone call was going to make the practice better. To my great frustration and dismay I never got that call back from Harold. Instead I received a snail mail letter from the office stating "At this time our relationship seems to be missing the important element of mutual understanding. At this time, I think it would be in your best interest to seek dental care from another dentist". As you can imagine, I feel heartbroken and now realize that all along I may have been taken advantage of. That this mutual understanding that is being referred to could only be the understanding that this practice can do no wrong and that simply asking for a conversation about our experience is a sign that we are no longer blind believers in their work. The reality that their tagline is "dentistry with a heart" is ironic. Shame on Harold Messer for making Anna Belouis DDS sign the letter we were sent because I am confident that this letter is from and written by him, because we had a wonderful relationship with Anna. I hope Anna finds a less toxic place to work. She was not even the dentist that was involved in my wife's situation. My thinking is that he is hiding behind this employees name because he knows how how egregious this misconduct is and how unethical his business practice is. The letter to me signifies this is simply how they do business. I feel terrible that I led my wife to believe this was a safe and ethical place to get healthcare and I will learn from this experience. We are considering legal action in hopes of sparing others from an experience like ours. If you or your loved ones are considering getting healthcare at Contemporary Dentistry I urge you to look elsewhere as this has been the most unprofessional healthcare experience of my lifetime. I still cannot fathom that such a letter, firing us as patients, was sent to me simply for asking for a conversation with Harold Messer. Shame on you Harold Messer. You should know better. read more

Jive been a patient here for 14 ys. Just left office after couple cavities filled. Another FABULOUS experience. This time I did the nitrous because the cavities were on two teeth, touching each other, and was going to take some time. Dr Belous is great (BTW..very pretty too) Very gentle. Staff is very professional (I love Misumi & Jen) I use their headphones , Pandora...sunglasses they provide. Sit back and relax. Sometimes I use the flat screen TV with headphones, that slides out right above your face. True comfort. Like flying 1st class on a plane. I agree their prices may be a bit higher than some. But you get what you pay for. That's why they sell Hyundai's and Cadillac's. Quality costs.... As for appts, I'm notified by email a week before, another couple of text reminders prior to appt. Our experience was similar in they changes our appointment without notice for a time that we could not make. They Sony called and said you r new appointment is at this time. How does that work without consulting with the person. Second, my wife called to reschedule an appointment they set up to meet with a dentist who was not "in-network" for work they said need to be done. Well we received a bill in the mail for a missed appointment. Really? They kept referring to their notes like that was the final record or something. Long story short, they removed the charges and told us we would need to prepay prior to any future visits. I've only been there 2xs! Um no thanks. Haven't been back since. read more

After having been patients at this practice for a few years and thousands of dollars later, my husband and I decided it was time to find a new dentist. If you are a patient or are considering this practice be aware of a few things: 1. Their prices are significantly higher than other reputable dentists located in Brighton and Pittsford. We are talking $50-100 per basic fillings, and hundreds of dollars for root canals, crowns, etc. They do not care to even consider price schedules from insurance companies - they name their own inflated prices and are not in network with any insurance company. 2. There is nothing holistic about the way they treat patients. They use the same sedatives as any other dentist in the area and charge more for the "spa like" environment. If anything, we have now learned from getting second and third opinions they over treat their patients. 3. Their treatment plan seems to constantly change as well as pricing. As a family that is on a budget, we were very specific in that we could not endure "surprise" charges without our consent. Every visit where work was done, there was a change in the amount we would owe at the end (when my husband was too numb to talk to them) than what we were told to anticipate (and we are talking about basic fillings...no special work done or medical emergencies). 4. You will wait and wait and wait. Their appointments never run on time and you could spend half a day there for cleanings, basic fillings, etc. Yet, if you run behind, I have heard from other unsatisfied former patients they will turn you away, charge you for the appointment, and then require deposit for next visit. Their time is valuable, but not the patients. 5. They have a real issue calling and needing to reschedule constantly. When they go to reschedule you, it's not a week difference, it can be sometimes up to two months! So in the meantime, you sit with a decaying tooth or problem on hold waiting to be fixed. 6. They do not do basic extractions or the simplest procedures most dentists do. They instead have another dentist come in on Fridays to do the procedure. Not only do you get charged a "consultation fee" for Dr. Messer to tell you the work is needed, you will then get another "consultation fee" for the dentist on Friday. We are talking $90 consultation fees per dentist NOT covered by insurance companies. 7. Office Manager Harrold is Dr. Messer's husband. When we had bill issues, they were real quick to credit us the difference we didn't agree upon or drop the charges when we would put them in between a rock and hard place being we made them put what we would owe in writing before they did the work. How does an office stay in business doing this if those charges were truly owed and they can just deduct them numerous times? Also, they offer a fairly significant discount if you pay by cash or check...again, how inflated are the prices to be able to do so? 8. Lastly, upon switching to a new dental group within walking distance (and also very reputable and well known in Rochester)....we were surprised to find out one of the fillings my husband still supposedly needed done, was definitely not needed. Perfectly healthy tooth on the xray provided by Contemporary Dentistry to this group! Secondly, a tooth they claimed they couldn't fill all the way and would need $3,000!! in work, guess what? New dentist was able to fill - no need for grinding of the bone, implant, and all the ridiculous recommendations made. Bottom line - compare and look around at other options if looking for a new dentist. If they recommend work - ALWAYS get a second opinion! I am not the only review or past patient I have come across who avoided major amounts of expensive work by simply going elsewhere. We feel so lucky we chose to leave when we did and save my husband unnecessary work with an honest dentist who charges fair prices for work that NEEDS to be done. read more

I literally just came back from a very thorough procedure with them earlier today (specifically with Dr. Belous- I prefer her, FYI, if you aren't sure which dentist to go with) and Dr. Sachs, the anesthesiologist. Honestly, yes, it DOES cost quite a bit to be sedated before the dental work, but I've price-compared and they are pretty much on par with all the others... and for me, it was worth it. Trust me, it was SO worth it, because I needed a lot of continuous work on my teeth (which started out bad and got worse with my 'bad habits') and I have very significant anxiety related to doctors and dentists, so some of the work truly could not have been done were I awake. If you are worried they won't be able to make you comfortable enough (regarding sedation or being gentle), don't be! Dr. Belous has always generously accommodated me and my sister, who has visited a couple times as well. Keep in mind there usually is quite a wait because they are in demand- and they should be, because I think they do a great job, have a lovely office- from the friendly staff to the comfortable rooms with TV and music & aromatherapy- and have worked hard enough, and patiently enough (with me), to earn my four stars. read more

This office is a rip off!! They have different prices for different dentist. For children's cleanings the charge is $90!! They have billed my insurance different amounts for the same services. For example my appointment at 7:30am at the office I was charged $82, my husband had an appointment at 9am and was charged $86 for the same cleaning. As I have looked through my explanation of benefits this is not an unusual practice! We have been billed 3 different amounts for the same cleaning (same codes used, different adult)! If you have an early appointment don't expect anyone will greet you! There's no one there! The hygienist come out and greet their patients. The office manager is the husband of one of the dentist. I've tried several times to speak with him but he's "on vacation" or "out of the office". The receptionist checks people in/out. Expect to wait at least 15 minutes to be checked out. She will answer the phone and check in new patients before you can check out. Once you're finally given your bill, if you ask questions, the receptionist will talk down to you explaining that printing out a bill is "very confusing" on paper. It seems like they don't want you to have anything in writing when you leave! But don't worry they want your money!! They are good at up selling services! Stay far away from this office if you have a family and don't want to spend a small fortune for cleanings and fillings! I read more

If there is such a thing as a pleasant dentist visit, it would happen here. The staff is genial and friendly, and you can get an appointment fairly quickly. I see Dr. Messer, and she is always a pleasure--professional, pleasant, and very attentive. Luckily for me, my checkup is typically positive with no issues, and I get a teeth cleaning that leaves me with a rejuvenated smile. I would recommend this place to everyone, especially those of you who are wary of dentists, as Contemporary Dentistry really removes the stress that often comes with a visit to the dentist's office. read more

I loathe the dentist so I can't really give this place 5 stars. However, I've had a few different dentists in my lifetime and Contemporary Dentistry has been the best yet. The entire staff is wonderful from the reception desk to the hygienists and the dentists. I see Anna Belous, who is the sweetest person in the world making your visit the least traumatic it can be. I also take really good care of my teeth because of my terrible fear of that pointy scraper tool so that also helps lessen my time in the chair. They do offer sedation dentistry, although I've never needed that in the past. Luckily, the tvs are a good enough distraction. They're very accommodating and when Anna comes in to check my teeth it's quick and painless (literally). At other places I've been to in the past, I've had to wait for almost 30 min. for the dentist's final approval. That's never the case at Contemporary. When I call to schedule an appointment I can usually get in within the week. I highly recommend this place! read more

I do not like the dentist AT ALL and this place was nothing like what I remember the dentist being (its been a few year). Everyone was friendly and nice, even the girl giving me directions when I got a little lost for my appointment. The waiting room is like a living room and it doesn't look like a medical office, there's a waterfall thing and coffee and little touches to make you comfortable, which I liked. The nurse who took me back was funny and trying to make me feel at ease, she explained everything in detail and showed me actual photos of my teeth. My doctor, Dr. Meser, likes to do holistic dental and use more natureal ways to take care of the mouth, which is something I'm interested in. She talked with me for a long time, which I"ve never had a dentist do before! I gave this office 4 stars only because it does take a long time, I was there for about 2 hours but they were doing all kinds of things that no other dentist had ever done and I think they are the most modern office i've ever seen. It is more expensive than when I was going to Aspen Dental, but I think you get what you pay for. Definitely sending my mother and sister here! read more

There's nothing like lounging at home on the couch, watching TV, relaxing, without a care in the world. That's almost -- I stress the almost -- what it's like at Contemporary Dentistry because they have an excellent TV set up inside their examination rooms. I don't know about you, but I hate going to the dentist. I mean, it's like pulling teeth to get me in that chair. Sorry. I go, because bad teeth are just gross, but to me there's only one thing worse than going to the dentist and that's not going, and then needing all that extra torture to fix everything you overlooked. But once you're concentrating on your favorite show or DVD, the drilling and scraping and twisting is not so bad and the staff do whatever they can (within reason) to help you get through what could otherwise be an extremely unpleasant experience. Dr. Belous does a great job making those normally painful procedures quite a bit less so. The only drawback is the office is not so well versed -- or accommodating -- with their insurance processing. But then again, how many of us are fortunate enough to have dental insurance that covers much more than a cleaning? read more

Overall experience is Fair. But not good enough for the money they charge. I got multiple procedures with them. And here is good and bad: Good: Rooms are nicely equipped with TV, some are even have two - one on a wall, and second is on the ceiling. Nice! Stuff is mostly responsive and welcoming. Cleaning and fillings went ok. Not so good: 4 month later I still feel pain, when flossing, in one of the tooth that received filling. Proposed solution on complex problem (bad crown) was expensive, unclear to me, and risky. I hold on that, for some reason doctor wanted to do it first..., and got second opinion from my sister in law, who is dentist (owns dental clinic in Canada). Second solution was not risky, clear and less expensive. Scheduling is really complex sometime they have all week open, sometimes opening is months away. Bad: I have an insurance, and wanted to know how much will my copay will be. Even thou C.D. took their time to submit a request to insurance, I've never got a clear answer on my question. Worst: When scheduling my last procedure, I was assured by the doctor that it "maintenance" and will be fully covered by insurance. I got same assurance during procedure. When I was leaving, I wanted to pay any outstanding balance (that's what I always do). I've been told that there are no outstanding balance, and today's procedure was maintenance, and will be covered by the insurance. TWO MONTH later I received a BILL for my last procedure(!). I called, and they explained to me that it really wasn't maintenance, and I should pay for it. Which I did, but that make me feel bad. read more

I am the worst patient in the world (anxious) and they address every concern I have and do everything in their power to make things comfortable for me. Unlike other dentists, here when anything is the least bit uncomfortable, it is not dismissed but rather they stop immediately and make changes. I have been to many dentists in my life and formerly married to one. I know what makes a good office. Contemporary Dentistry is the BEST. I would go no place else.The doctors are up to date with all the newest procedures and very professional. My veneers are perfect and I never felt one ounce of pain during any procedure. I believe that teeth are very important during one's lifetime and using these dentists have given me confidence for the long haul when it comes to my teeth! read more

I have been a patient for about 5 years and while Dr. Belous has a decent manner with patients, three of the fillings she put in have chipped or broken and had to be redone. I am looking for a new dentist after a filling she has done twice, which I asked for her to do differently, is again not fully covering the cavity. I've never had this experience at other dentists. They've paid a lot of money for their office to look nice (as well as Dr. Belous getting certified to give cosmetic Botox injections?!) when they should be more focused on quality dental work. read more
