If I were reviewing this solely as a bar, I'd give it 2 stars. With only TWO beers on tap, one of which is Bud Light, I shouldn't have to say any more. That's tough to recover from. But we went here to listen to music. And in that regard, this was fabulous!! First of all, we could walk here from where we were staying. Secondly, we wanted to see some blues and the Blues Specialists were playing. We watched a few of their YouTube videos beforehand and thought, yep, that's what we want to see! Thirdly, there's no cover. The chairs are set up in rows facing a pretty big stage, like a real music venue. Service was outstanding. I don't know how the single waitress was able to keep everyone served and not screw up the orders but she was awesome. And the music? Oh man, it was terrific. This is known as one of the classic music venues in all of Austin. I can see why. Not sure you can get a much better place to see some great live music. Another reason not to come here. It's a bar. Lots of people are inside drinking. I walk in and there's no doorman or no one taking a cover. I walk to the bar and a guy says we open at 6:30. It's 6. "Can I stay," I ask. "No, that's why I said 6:30," he said. It's obviously a set change between bands but when in this world does a bar not let people in, pay a cover, whatever, to have a drink? I ask My Sweetie as I point to a neon "Speed Shop Since 1948" sign - "A place where they sell speed? A place where everything happens really fast?" We have arrived very early to the CC... as a matter of fact, this is the first time either of us has been here during daylight hours. We are touring South Congress for the Road Ralley and enjoying the sites of altered cars and women. She says, "Isn't that a red car on top of the sign? I think it is a car place." Sure nuff, the red car is blending into the red wall and I missed it. Fresh, velvety smooth Guinness is different in the daylight hours when it almost feels wrong to be at the Continental Club. Fishnet stockinged Betty Pages (3 of them) bounce to the bar with the confidence of everyman'sfantasypaintedontheirlips. My Sweetie looks at me and says, "Get behind me Satan!" Whaaaa? Was she talking about the Betty Pages, the music, the Guinness or the night? What does this mean? Does she think I am Satan and she wants me to get behind her? Does she think she is worse than Satan? Is this a saying from rural Iowa that has eluded me all of these years? Is it an expression of happiness or sadness? The music is pretty loud so I decide not to risk it... TOO MANY RIDICULOUS QUESTIONS TO SHOUT at a bar that is only half packed so I just smiled and decided it meant she was really happy at that very moment. "I've got an uptown woman she's got some low down dirty ways She treats me so bad she keeps me in a daze." Blues Specialists lead man on Harmonica then breaks into the toe-tappin' "Flip flop and fly." Fifty year old woman in shorts and red hoodie doing her best white man's overbite to "I don't care if I die, don't ever leave me, don't ever say goodbye" while four guys in "Mad Greasers" jackets are watching her every move. This is the night for the Fonze AND the entire cast of Grease The Movie to step out of the back room and start singing. Such a disappointment! As soon as we planned our trip to Austin, I checked to see who was playing at the Continental Club, as I've always wanted to go. I was really excited to see that Junior Brown was playing the Sunday night we were in town. Per the Yelp reviews, we got there about an hour early to get a seat and paid our $10 cover. The last band was finishing up. We watched them perform the last song of their set, went to the bar to order a drink, and were told by the guy at the door who had just taken our $10 cover that it would be another $15/piece if we wanted to stay. We reminded him that we had just paid him $20 not even 10 minutes earlier, but he said that was for the last band and we owed him another $30 if we wanted to see Junior. We offered to cover the difference and pay the additional $5/piece, but he said that wouldn't work. So we left! We spent $20 to see a band play one song. And it wasn't even the band we came to see. We could not believe it. Rules are rules, and I get it. BUT: A.) If that's rule, then tell us when we come in and we'll wait outside for another five minutes or B.) Accept our offer to pay the additional $10 and call it good. I will never go back, and that really makes me sad because I wanted to love it. Now I'll always think of it as the place that stole $20 from us. read more

Places like the Continental Club present a challenge to review for a couple of reasons: first off, some of the very things that are flawed about the place are what give it its charm, second, given that it's a music venue, your mileage may vary based upon whoever the act is that's playing that night. Given that my most recent trip in was hatched in order to watch David Garza's New Years' Eve-Eve set, I can't imagine any place that I'd have rather been than at Continental last night. Garza was darn near burning the place down onstage, and we all goofed with reckless abandon accordingly. The things that have always been somewhat annoying about this place continue to be so, namely the bathroom so cramped you'd think it was a converted closet, and the close quarters of the club itself: when you rub elbows with people here, you *really do* rub elbows. But none of that seems to matter when the act you're seeing onstage reminds you of why the Continental's special. Because stuff like this? Nobody does it better. read more

An Austin icon. I've been here a handful of times, the first, my introduction to the awesomeness that is Pong. And, again, for Pong last night. And a few times in between. It's a small space with pretty good acoustics. As other people have said, the crowd is diverse, as is the music offered here. That, I believe, is probably my favorite thing about The Continental Club. I also love the retro fifties/ late night talk show looking stage, it creates an excellent backdrop. Avoid the Lone Star, it's a tad pricey... if you're going to spend that much for beer, just step it up a bit. They also have a full bar. If you're lucky enough to nab a table or some chairs towards the back, you'll have a waitron, as well. The tables annoy me slightly, though, it seems that so many more people could fit into the place if they'd just push them to the side or something. Also, as my friend said, "If you're going to have just one beer on tap, this is the best option." They have Guiness on draft, and that's the only one. Yeah, I dig this place. read more

The $10 cover initially turned me off to this place. I wasn't too keen on paying to hear 2 honky-tonk bands I'd never heard of (Cornell Hurd Band and The Derailers), but I did, and it was worth it. Both bands were really entertaining and talented, and the crowd was friendly and energetic. It was a crowd though; people were really packed in there. Don't go here if you demand much "personal space." At 29, I was among the younger people at the bar that night, but the population was pretty mixed. Patrons ranged in age from late 20s-mid70s, and wore everything from Hawaiian shirts to western wear to swing dance outfits. I danced with a couple of older (like my dad's age) guys who were quite talented at the 2-step, and that was surprisingly fun. Seriously ladies, don't turn a guy down for a dance if you're standing un-escorted near the dance floor. It's not like you're getting married to the dude; it's just a dance, and you'll probably enjoy it. I had a few drinks from the bar, and I thought it was pretty expensive, but I also think someone else's beers might have been on my tab. I'm not sure though because it's not like you get an itemized receipt. So, drink price is really my only complaint. Continental Club definitely makes my list of Austin institutions worth visiting again. read more

Doesn't work for me... been there maybe 5-6 times over a many year span and always am thinking why did I do this again... what did I not learn the first time? It is dirty, most venues are way too loud, seating is poorly arranged, sound quality not so good, seems like some shows are sold beyond capacity(I'm not happy being a sardine), crowded situations make it very difficult for waitstaff to provide reasonable service, much of the music is nothing special... a few shiny moments here and there... The Armadillo, Antone's, Liberty Lunch, and a few others: the clubs that defined this town's music scene by putting the music first. The Continental is one of the last and best of this breed (though we still have plenty of really fine clubs, fingers crossed). They book so many good bands, including plenty that go on to the heights. Country, punk, jazz, blues, rock of all stripes...you can find it at the CC, and it will feel the way a club show should: loud and rocking. This is not a club for bystanders, it's for folks who like to yell and laugh and dance. You will get involved here, in one way or another. For those who say it's too crowded, I say go see some band you haven't heard of at happy hour, or on a Sunday or Monday. Why go see only the popular bands? That's no fun at all. And the best view is always from the dance floor! Last week I stopped in at about 1:20 on a Tuesday; after dancing to some funk and then some jazz.downtown, I biked on up to the CC to see see if anything was still percolatin'. Dash Rip Rock was finishing so I wandered in to enjoy the last few tunes. There were maybe thirty people there, lots of seats and room. As the band did yet another garagey number (they were huge here ten years ago and are still fun), some girl jumps up on the side of the stage and begins doing a go-go type dance. She's totally into it and I realize she's not very tall. In fact, she's not tall at all. In fact, she's about three six or so. But that hasn't stopped her from wearing a top that exposes a good chunk of her, um, gut. Yes, her waist was bigger than her hips, but that only added to the effect. She boogied away up there to some hoots and hollers and then jumped down and got another beer. It hardly fazed me, just another moment at the Continental. Then I thought, damn, where's the Keep Austin Weird marketing brigade? No doubt at some disco somewhere. The real "weirdness" in town goes on 24/7, and is just real folks living as they see fit. To me that's what the Continental represents. It's one guy's dream of a club where his values of old school rock and good music in general meet hot rods and tattoos and neon and...Hippie Hour? I knew this was my town in '98 when I saw Toni on a Tuesday, no cover, no line-up, and at halftime everyone in the whole club went out back and had a smoke while a cop car cruised by and both cops waved. Then back for another amazing set of heartfelt music. Since then I've seen literally hundreds of groups, from famous to unknown, and enjoyed most every show. The sound is good and loud, as it's meant to be (I want to FEEL the music), the waitresses friendly and often funny, the dancers happy and relaxed. So it gets packed. Go when it's not. (Hint: the best guitarist in town since SRV (to my ears, anyhow) plays a weekly gig here. No cover.) As Dash was packing up and I was leaving, I saw Steve, the man with the Continental dream that he made reality, sitting happily alone by the shoeshine stand (RIP Shoeshine Charlie). We chatted for a bit and when I asked who he'd recommend of the newcomer bands he was booking, he really thought about it and named a few favorites. Then he paused and said, "But you know, I just love my regulars so much, too, it's hard to pick." Which made me think: how many club owners will give a group a weekly gig for YEARS until they finally find their crowd? Damn few. But it's been policy here at the CC for as long as I can remember, and that's why this place gets my vote for best club in town. The Continental has style and attitude, but in the end it's all about the music. And unlike the Armadillo and Liberty, it's still here. Show it some love. read more

I love Austin music. And I've been going to the Continental Club since 1980, at least. It has figured prominently in my life. And I've heard great bands at the Continental. Fabulous bands. Most recently, Dave and Phil Alvin. But let's face it, folks. The place is a dive. They cram us in like... cattle? Or rather like people who will put up with darned near anything to hear a good band. How many seats are in there, at best? 20? 30? There's no will call window, so you stand in line outside, even if you've bought tickets online. When you get in, you stand.... and maybe you can see, maybe you can't. It gets hot, people are pushy. No matter how good the music is, the conditions get old fast. At the recent Wanda Jackson show, when a friend mentioned to one of the staff that he wondered if they were violating the fire laws, the staff member told him he was free to leave. Yeah, that kind of attitude pervades. I'll probably keep going when a band just must be heard. But I will wish for better conditions and more respect for us, the patrons and the fans. read more

I had intended on writing something special for my 400th review, specifically a review of a dear friend of mine. I actually wrote the review before I went to Austin, and well before I reached 400, and although the visit wasn't what I expected, the review didn't change but I'm going to keep it to myself. Anyway, enough about that for now. On to the Continental Club! Live music. Live music. Live music. Apart from the real summer weather and BBQ, this is what I came to Austin for. Oh and the tour guide/birthday boy, also known as OOTTTPIL. We'll get to him in a second. This is a cozy club where you can get within sweat castoff distance of some of your favorite (or soon to be favorite) acts, all while enjoying cheap but good beer (I am still getting over the prices in Austin). Although OOTTTPIL and I came here for no other reason but to check it out (more for him than me), we scored twice that night- once when I got to sneak in without paying (how that happened, I don't know. I didn't look THAT good that night), and with Wayne Hancock as the act. Now, I'm a big fan of all music, but I was just amazed at how awesome this band was. Not only that, but the decor was fitting for just such a band- it's almost like a scavenger hunt with all the kitschy items gracing the walls. This place is just oozes cool, and decades-old charm. I felt a strong urge to put my best pin-up gear on and color my lips with the richest red lipstick I could find. Basically, this place is a perfect venue to hang with one (or more) of your favorite people, listening to great music. If (or when) I move to Austin, this will be a regular haunt. read more

Ever wonder where the musicians go to hear other musicians? This is the place, from local Miles Zuniga to David Bowie (I am not kidding) have been spotted here catching some live music. Regular favorites are Jon Dee Graham, who played here back in the 60's with his punk band the Skunks, and someone a little newer on the scene, James McMurtry. The Continental Club is an Austin institution that helped put our fair city on the map as the Live Music Capital of the World. After all, this is where Stevie Ray Vaughn got his start. I was here several years ago to see Julie and Buddy Miller (Buddy is an outstanding guitar player for Emmylou Harris). During their set Patty Griffin showed up and sang a few songs with them. Amazing! The venue is quite intimate adding to charm. But it also means you must get there early for the good shows. read more

Honestly, I'm not impressed. Its a divey place and I don't hold that against it. But if you're going to be a dive bar, then don't charge exorbitant prices for drinks and check the snotty attitude at the door. EVERYONE, from the doorman collecting the cover, to the bartender doing me the gracious favor and sparing her precious time to make me a drink has a "I'm cooler than you" attitude. It was a Sunday night, the house band was really good and I enjoyed them. The reputation of this place allows them to book good bands, consistently pull crowds, charge the high prices they do and give the crappy service they have. All I ask for is a smile and some courtesy as you take my $2 tip for each drink I order. I may come back someday if and only if a very good band is playing, but I'll drink somewhere else. read more

Honky Tonk happy hour on Saturday afternoons is a must-attend event. Pool table. Full bar. Not a fancy bar, but a full one. To those who seem surprised that the Continental Club is a dive: Go back to LA. Yes, it's a "dive." But not nearly as much of a "dive" as at least 100 other venues or bars in Austin and beyond I can list off the top of my head. Think of it as "authentic." Hey, if you're going to hear awesome Americana, punk country, or Southern eclectic, do you really want plush seating, black tie, and champagne cocktails? We've been to the Continental Club several times and have always enjoyed it, as a unique, off the beaten path place to enjoy good music. We got our wires crossed, ended up arriving after the band we wanted to see had played, but decided to check it out anyway. We were told they were sold out, BUT that we could get in if we paid twice the cover charge. Foolishly, we agreed. They were turning people away for a REASON. The place was unsafely crammed with people, making the experience claustrophobic. It was impossible to move. The band was formulaic. We didn't stay long, and departed wondering if the Continental had simply become a place to be seen . . . A place to go to because everyone else does. It's in us for entering, but it's on them for unsafely packing the club, and for shaking down customers for a few extra bucks. read more

It doesn't matter if it's Redd Volkaert, Grady, Alejandro Escovedo, James Mcmurtry, Jon Dee Graham, Honky, Dale Watson, or one of million other great bands, there is ALWAYS a band worth seeing playing at the Continental. When Mojo Nixon came out of retirement, there's a reason that the Continental was one of 3 venues he played (one of the other two was the Continental in Houston). It seems that the population of Austin likes to consider damned near every business, street corner, and shrub an "Austin Institution" but this is definitely one of the few places that lives up to that title. Waltzing into the Continental Club is like bumping into that "one", old girlfriend I've not seen in years. Her smell and touch instantly brings back memories of the best sex I ever had. Unfortunately, I was too young, drunk and high to truly appreciate her back then. After an evening of drinking and dancing together, I realized it was all my fault. I used to come here pretty often on Sundays as that is one of the best music nights here. They generally get good shows here and there always seems to be a crowd of people doing the Texas Two Step and various other dance moves. They also generally always have a cover to get into this place at night. When people are dancing and twirling around they will have no compunction about bowling you over so you need to be cautious of that. Unfortunately this place has hired some really pretentious people who have forgotten the environment where the music they book was developed. This is definitely NOT any type of Honky Tonk and on my last visit I was lectured to by a bartendress for drinking "too fast" after ordering my second beer of the night and told I was going to be cut off. I looked back at the bartendress in awe and laughed at her and said "this is just my second beer all day and believe me I'm from New Orleans and can definitely handle two beers!" The bartendress glared back at me and said "that doesn't matter because the Continental Club is not that kind of place." I replied "you mean the kind of place where people have fun" and then I just dealt with the other bartender the rest of the night with no problem. I also should probably mention it was really crowded and I had stood in line probably 20 minutes waiting to get to the bar to even order a drink and then there was also quite a line for the bathroom so it was very impossible to "drink fast" at any point in this establishment. I really hope that young gal found her another line of work because she probably rates as the all time worst bartendress I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. read more

I finally got to check this place out a couple of weeks ago. It is definitely a place everybody needs to go to at least once because 1) there's a great view of the city from the rooftop (or so I hear since I arrived too early to go up), 2) amazing blues musicians play here and 3) you'll get a crash course of the Austin music scene just by looking at all the clipping, photos and posters covering the walls. My friend and I came around 6:30 p.m. for happy hour. There were these super old guys playing without too much energy. They were actually losing steam pretty quickly, but we didn't care too much. Now, I really wish I would've seen Wayne "The Train" Hancock play, or even the Mexican Elvis impersonator, El Vez. The inside setup is pretty cool and very vintage-dive bar themed. Tall chairs are lined up in the middle of the club so people don't have to stand while watching the act, and there's seating on the sides. Most of the people here were 30+, so I did feel a little out of place, but maybe I'm just an old soul. read more

Went to the Continental a week ago. There was a band which went on at 6:30, second act at 10pm. Here's the weak link about this room. There is actually only seating (not counting the bar) for maybe 45 listeners. We got there at 6pm and every single seat was taken, and it was apparent that these listeners were there for the evening. So if you want to get a seat to watch a show, I have no idea what time you may need to arrive? I'd say go prepared to stand for the evening. Sound system was good, and they actually have an engineer mixing the shows, unlike many of the other Austin venues that wing it. The good news is that this club is in a good part of town, and you should feel safe walking in the evening. read more

Let's start by saying: I cannot stand some gushy review by someone who just stepped into some place to get out of the sun and they think its the greatest place in the world. I honestly think the CC would get a lower star rating if it weren't for the self-loving, star-struck, keep-austin-weird people who think they invented hipster. However, that's not to say I don't like the CC. In fact, its a fantastic venue with a good combination of rockabilly / punk rundown feel mixed with a rich history. The drink selection is perfectly fine. The range of legends you can see playin' there is phenomenal. I've been here in Austin for three years now, and at the CC, I've seen Link Wray, Wanda Jackson, Mojo Nixon, Southern Culture on the Skids, Dale Watson, Marti Brom, the Ted Roddy Elvis Tribute, Unknown Hinson, the Flametrick Subs, and many many many more. Everyone else can tell you how wonderful it is (and in many ways it is.) But here is the real deal: Drink prices are high, even for Lone Star Beer. On crowded nights, it gets stifling hot and its difficult to get service, while you fight off hipsters and old farts who sit around taking up space. The cover charge usually feels like you're getting buttraped in some dark corner of a correctional facility. Seriously, who wants to pay $5 to see Dale Watson on a Monday when you can see him for free on Sundays and Thursdays (and most other nights.) There are regularly $15, $20 shows there, and I'm sorry, there's usually no justification for that high of a cover charge, when the place is packed and you're selling WAY overpriced drinks. None of this is enough to keep me away from shows I really want to see, but its just a dose of reality that keeps the CC from getting a higher star rating. read more

First, the good. Far and away the simplest way to experience the south Austin music vibe and enjoy terrific variety. The artists seem to be genuinely pleased to play this storied venue which makes the experience that much better. I also like the intimacy as you're never very far from the stage. Unlike some others, I have had good luck with the bar service and the drinks are good. My beefs are simple. One, the men's room stench is worse than a pack of unbathed hobos. Really, how difficult would an occasional clean up be? Two, many of the big, high cover charge shows offer no advance sales. To hear the recent Buck and Elvis tributes meant standing in a long line in the blistering sun for the privilege of plunking down $25 per head. I suppose that ownership is fine with this as they get their money regardless. Me and my friends, not so much. Unless this changes I will be spending more time at other more customer oriented spots and going to the CC for the less harried happy hour shows. read more

If I entered every live-music experience of my life (excluding the ones where I was on stage) into an Excel spreadsheet and sorted them by coolness, most of the ones ranked highest would have "The Continental Club" written in the "venue" column. Doing this would also verify my suspicions that I am a very neurotic nerd. I've seen lots of great roots rock and rockabilly here. The last time I went, my wife and I forked over $16 cover at the door (for both of us) to see Michael Nesmith. We walked in and he played one last song and that was it. We told the door guy we had come to see Nesmith, not the headliner, but there was never any hope of our getting any of the money back. I have loved Johnny Cash for many years. When I heard there was a place that housed a Johnny Cash Tribute band I was ecstatic! The show was at 10, we arrived around 1030 and had to stand for about a half hour before we snagged two seats. So, if you want to sit, make sure you get there right before it starts to secure your place. I can't drink beer unless it's gluten free, so I ordered my favorite drink- a marguerita. Now I never assume I'm going to get an amazing marguerita unless it's from a Mexican restaurant, but it wasn't too bad actually. The prices were really good too.. my friend ordered a craft beer, both drinks together were only $9.75. Cover to get in was only $7. Onto the music.. the band was from San Diego and let me say "UNCANNY" how much the singer looked like, talked like and sang like Johnny Cash. I was 100% impressed and loved it!!!! The audience could shout out requests, he knew 150 of the 5,000 songs Johnny Cash wrote so I considered that pretty remarkable considering he played for 3 hours. All in all, LOVED it!!!!! read more
