Came to Convoy Smog by the recommendation of my dad. Hey, you can't get a better one than from your priest, minister or rabbi, right? They have two dedicated parking spaces in front of the shop. Once you check in, you are directed to pull up to the door. There is a small "waiting room" with five seats. You are able to see everything that the inspector does from walking around the vehicle and checking under the engine with a mirror to hitting the accelerator for the test itself. It is nerve racking to see the exhaust come out the back to see if your car will pass but I liked that you knew exactly what was going on and being done. Thankfully, my car passed. There was another vehicle that the technician was working on simultaneously as mine. Jimmy was all business. Didn't chit chat. He was very process oriented. He got down to business but he was pleasant. I arrived ten minutes to 8 am on a Saturday. I wanted to try and be the first person so I could get in and out quickly. The entire process from check in to paying took exactly 15 minutes. The service costs approx $55 with the certificate. I would most definitely recommend and will be a return customer. Hey everybody, do you need to get your car smogged? If so you gotta check out this place, "Convoy Smog". I was shocked how fast they were, I was in and out in 10 minutes!! The guys were super nice, very helpful, and informed me about further actions regarding my registration with the DMV. They seemed busy but they still took the time to make me feel welcomed and appreciated. I called around for other quotes and 65 bucks was about the average price for a smog check. I'm sure like everybody you wanna be in and out and don't have the time to be sitting around waiting forever. So if that sounds like you? This is the place to go. Convoy Smog is by far the best Star smog test and repair station in San Diego. A few weeks ago, my 1990 Nisan 300ZX failed smog at a test-only station (NOx at 25 MPH was a little high). Several repair shops didn't want to help because (1) mechanics and tools of that OBD1 era are hard to find, and (2) this particular car is notoriously hard to work on. So, I was pleasantly surprised when Yaro at Convoy Smog agreed to take a look. He checked the engine and EGR and then pretested it for emissions: NOx was on the borderline...but might pass. So, I said go ahead with the test, which he did - and to my extreme relief the car passed! Oh, and he charged less than the station that failed me. Yaro's courtesy, technical expertise, and above all honesty really impressed me. Other places wanted $300+ to run a diagnostic plus they'd need the car a few days. So, for any smog testing or smog repair needs you may have, be sure to visit Convoy Smog. This is a great shop - you'll be glad you did. read more

Luckily, I didn't give up, because Convoy Smog quoted me $75 over the phone. They didn't say that price included the certificate -- but it did. They were courteous, quick, and gave me a $5 discount from an online coupon that wasn't actually viewable on my iPhone. I have been at this location before but somehow missed putting in a Yelp review. I didn't have a reservation today, but I decided to try walking in to see if they would test my car for Smog. The gentleman who was at the counter greeted me. I asked if I could get a smog test today. He said it was a thirty minute wait. I gave him my DMV document and keys. It was only 20 minutes and he said to me that it had passed the Smog Test. I was also able to get a Yelp Check In discount! I still had time to get to the DMV to get my sticker. This place was great with my smog check. Recommended by my dad cause it was that time of year for my smog and my first for this car. I walked in or should I say drove in lol. They took me right away asked for my dmv papers and told me it would be a 15-20 min wait since they had someone plugged in already. When my car was being plugged in I mentioned to the mechanic I had just switched out my battery the previous week which he said was a great thing to know before the test. I have taken my 2 vehicles to this place for the past few years without much of dissatisfaction. However, after replacing ignition switch and having the battery disconnected for about it week, I took the vehicle to get smog because registration was due. After the test, I was informed it failed because OBD2 Not Ready. Only after that, owner then finally asked if I had maintenance or battery replaced recently. Long story short, I still had to pay for failed smog and they said they would charge me another $30 for retest. Owner told me to google how to reset computer. So I drove for close to 50 miles at about 60 MPH and monitored my OBD2 scanner until all the codes were cleared and ready. Because this place wasn't open on Sunday and I needed to register my car, I found a smog place called A&P Smog Test on Armour street. And well, well, well..... they had a sign posted warning customers about potential smog failure for exact reason why my car failed smog the first time at Convoy Smog. CONVOY SMOG! Shame on you. I wonder how many people got their hard earned money ripped off for their lack of transparency. I'll not return to this place. I recommend A&P Smog Test. Plus, it will cost little less for retest. read more

I often look at/depend on reviews when looking for a particular business. I chose to take my car to Convoy Smog because of the good reviews they received on Yelp. I am here to add yet another one. My car unfortunately failed the smog test because of a partial zero emissions code. Jimmy was super knowledgeable, and explained how no matter the car manufacturer, this is covered under a $150K mile/15-year warranty. I then took my car to Kearny Pearson Ford and was quoted $573 (*eyes bugging out*) to fix this issue; supposedly it was stuck in the open position. Of course I did not tell the service rep at Ford upfront what I had learned in advance (intentionally) but when I did - after I received the estimate - he said "Oh yeah, I forgot about that." I call BS. Jimmy not only saved me nearly $600 - because who knew what I would have done if he had not told me, I may very likely would have paid the amount because, after all, I need to renew my registration - but he also checked out my front headlights after telling him they were really dim and asked his advice. He then went above and beyond by cleaning them to see if it would help. He continued to provide worthwhile advice. Yaro, the owner was great as well, for reasons I will not mention. I feel I can trust them, and when you're a woman taking your car in for service that is usually not the feeling we get. I am grateful to both Yaro and Jimmy, and thank them both for their excellent customer service. read more

They went out of their way to fail my car with a smog check. This car has passed CA smog 4 times and even passed this time but their tech took the time to jack up the car, get out a mirror, and get underneath to look at the serial number on the rear catalytic converter. He then claimed it was not CA even though the car passed CA smog. Prior to telling me any of this, he immediately went to his computer and FLAGGED the car at DMV. Now my only option to pay $1500 for a CA compliant catalytic converter even though the car passed smog. Four previous smog had no problem with the car and it passed every year. Only this one went above beyond to fail my car. Even the CA smog that I met with was surprised that this shop went that far and said there was no reason to fail the car but since they did then I now HAVE to replace the catalytic converter. read more

They don't warn you about possible system code issues and they don't check if your vehicle is code ready before testing. And they Do Not do free retest on 1999 an older. Other test stations offer free retest for all vehicles. I should have gone elsewhere. read more
