I got a Groupon for an oil change at this place which was $52, when I get there it turned out my truck uses 7 instead of the max 5 quarts of oil per the deal(at first I thought that was too much, but it was correct). So they charged me almost $18 a quart each for the last two quarts! $52 oil change went to $90. You can buy the exact same oil for ~$30 for five quarts. Although not apparent by its name, I recently came to Instant Smog Check to get an oil change for my vehicle after getting some take-out food nearby. Besides smog checks and oil changes, they also do some limited repair and replacement of auto parts. You can even rent small moving trucks from them too. One of their coupons in a periodic mailer advertised a conventional oil change for $19.99. That price is about as low as you can get. They close at 5 pm nowadays instead of the regular 6 pm because of reduced business. I was able to pull into their lot and get an oil change done on the spot. Instead of staying in the vehicle while it was inside a service bay for the work to be done, I actually had to get out and give the keys to a staff member. He then drove the vehicle into a garage area to perform the maintenance. That was unusual because I have been spoiled without having to move at all from my seat during past oil changes. About 25 minutes later, the guy drove my vehicle back into the lot. I went inside to pay the charges which included a $1.97 hazmat disposal fee for the removed oil. The lady at the counter noted several observations during the inspection of the engine well. She listed the other services that they recommended which I deferred at this time. My older Toyota needed a smog check at a STAR station which really limits the places you can take it. I waited over two hours at one such station only to have the car fail because "you don't drive it enough." So my husband drove it up and down the freeway the next day but it was going to be a multi-hour wait to take it back to the same place. So I took it to Instant Smog Check (1905 Grand Avenue, Pacific Beach) and had a much faster and more pleasant experience. They even checked that the (monitors?) had all the data that was needed before doing the smog check so that I wouldn't be charged if they didn't. Car passed and I was out of there. I needed to get a smog check and this place ended up being cheaper than most in the area! They have a coupon online which helped to save about $10. In total I paid $48 for the service. They did a great job, the only issue was that it took over an hour. The only thing I wish was that I was updated more frequently on how long it would take since they knew they had other cars there they needed to service. You also have to pay whether you pass or not - which some places do not make you pay if you don't pass. Overall it was a good experience outside of the timing and I would return. read more
