Cook out is my late night spot when I am hungry. Don't expect anything healthy, I love their burgers and during the summer months the watermelon milkshakes, so good. The have so many milkshake flavors to select from.

This place is a dual drive through restaurant. The line was backed up. To me that tells me the place is good. The food was a good portion size and the taste was good. Not the best I've ever had and definitely not the worst. I had the burger, add cheese, with fries and cheese bites. There is no inside seating.

I really wanted to try Cook Out since it's only available in southern states. I'm really surprised by the number of negative reviews since I had a great experience. We came at 10:30am on a Sunday and I believe we were the first ones to order (big back activity). We got the tray combo, chicken Cajun sandwich, bacon wrap, corn dog, and a watermelon shake. Food came out in a few minutes, and everything was fresh and surprisingly not too greasy. Not sure if it's because we came early but the quality was pretty good for fast food and everything was only $10 so great value. My only complaint is that the chicken was a bit dry but other than that everything tasted great. The watermelon shake was probably the best milkshake I've ever had omg there was actual watermelon pieces throughout the drink. Really wish there were more in the northern states.

Loved this place. I wish I took pics of the food. I got a double burger, fries, onion rings, quesedilla, and the big ass tea. It all came out to like $12 and I was like TWELEVE DOLLA?!?!. Anyways it was a good price imo. The portion sizes for each item are all baby sized imo, but everything together was very filling, and I really liked the variety of everything for just $12. I usually don't like going to places that serve a ton of diff foods, so I had my doubts at first, but once I got the food I was really happy. Service was great. Got my food probably within 5-10 minutes

I was with a local and we wanted some quick food after a long day. They told me this place was super fast and cheap, so we tried it. They told me the burgers are small but the prices aren't bad, so order a little more than you typically would. Long story short, the line was incredibly long and slow. To be fair, the person I was with kept saying that never happens so maybe the long wait was a fluke. Unfortunately, it will be my ONLY experience here so it's all I know to be true. The food was ridiculously small, bland and basic. I ordered more than I usually would so I spent more than I usually would and I still wasn't sated so, what is the point of coming here? I spent more time and money than I would have somewhere else to be left unsatisfied. This place is a perfect example of lo barato sale caro.

I don't know why cookout doesn't get that much love. The prices are very competitive! The burgers and shakes are not only great value, They taste amazing. The grilled chicken sandwiches are also great. I wish we had cookouts in Maryland.

I guess this is a cheeseburger?

I cannot do it Every single friend of mine that I have met here in Virginia tells me about how good Cook Out is and How it's a great post club meal due to the cheap price and late night availability but I can't do it. Even if it's the only thing open late nights I'm good. This food is terrible, horrible... it should be a crime in the common wealth to serve Guantanamo bay detainee food to the public. Plain cheeseburgers that have no lettuce or nothing on it with smashed in stale bun bread. When I inquired about this they told me the fixing are upon request only! TERRIBLE. Says on their menu they're beef is 100% usda grade tasty beef I beg to differ...Cheap greasy limp fries HORRIBLE. The only thing I like was the employees nice attitudes and friendly customer service. Also, I loved my coke float but other than that Honey it's a no for me.

Cookout has the best shakes in town! So many flavors and varieties to choose from! I'm also a fan of the Wisconsin White Cheddar Cheese Bites! So Good! The walking tacos are another favorite....yum! Service is usually pretty quick and staff has always been friendly!

This is what I purchased at the Cook Out in Hampton, Va. These 8 small onion rings should be bigger like the other Cook Out.

I went through the Drive Thru at the Cook Out in Hampton, VA and ordered a Big Double Tray Cheese Burger with everything and two side orders of onion rings. When I opened up the plate and saw these small onion rings, I wanted to go back to Hampton, VA from Portsmouth and get my money back. They gave me 8 small onion rings. I've eaten at a Cook Out in Gloucester, VA and the onion rings was bigger and seasoned well. I'll never go back to the Cook Out in Hampton, Va again.

Crumbled up receipt they gave back to us.

I normally don't ever come on here and write reviews, but this place was in need of one. I read a few of them and it seems like they all have a common theme: the food is great but the customer service is absolutely atrocious. The woman on the speaker box was getting frustrated because she couldn't hear our order. And when we repeated it, all we got in return was more attitude. When we pulled up to the window, they would ask us questions about our order and we'd again answer. But they'd snap back and say "cant hear you. What?" Very unprofessional. Then when we got our receipt they proceeded to crumble it up and give it to us. I feel like I'm not even welcome when I come here. Which is a shame because the food is great. But just watch out for the way the servers treat you.

But double with chicken nuggets and mac n cheese bites

Food is good and the price is great, but the sides are pitiful. Sure you can pick two if you get a tray, but you'll only get 3 nuggets and barely 4 cheese bites. This is not the first time it's happened either. You're better off just buying the burger and getting a soda from the store

Yuck I don't know what has happened over the years but this place has increasingly unpleasant. If I could say yuck over and over again that would be my review. I am mad I went to two places before this and their lines were extremely long at this time of night. But noticing that cookout had two lines and a faster drive thru we decided to try our luck here. First of all it felt like I was in the club while we were in line. People dancing outside of their cars, a Facebook video was being filmed and an argument between the customer and an employee all happened within a 15 minute time frame. We finally get to order and I went for what I usually get when I come here. Whooooo playing it safe definitely didn't help me here. I ordered a cookout tray with chili cheese fries and a bbq pulled pork sandwich. We get to the window and all hands are on deck but there was so much exposed hair and no hairnets I was already uncomfortable. My order is up and it starts...what I actually got was dog food fries and the dogs barf in between two slices of bread. It was hideous and quite frankly disgusting. I tried. I really did but this right here was just not appetizing at all. I'm just fed up with these establishments feeding us this bull. Just because it's late at night doesn't mean you can feed us this slop! Do better cookout.. DO BETTER Oh on a positive note the fruit punch with light ice was amazing.

So apparently half an onion is an acceptable portion for a burger

They were voted Best Burger in Newport News, so my expectations were pretty high. They absolutely did NOT disappoint. I ordered a plain cheeseburger with grilled onions and bacon, along with the chili cheese fries. BEST MEAL I'VE HAD IN A WHILE! The burger was fresh, juicy, and exactly what I was craving. Everything came out super fast and tasted fresh. You order at the counter when you walk in, and if you're dining in, they bring your food out to you. Super easy and efficient. It does get crowded though. They also had a little market where they sell ice cream, pie, jerky's, snacks. I really wanted to try their soft serve too, but by the time we finished eating, there was a HUGE line, so I'm kind of sad I didn't get to try it. Guess that just means I have to come back!

I think the tater tots were my favorite part - they were the perfect crispness. Burgers were delicious but messy, especially when your kids don't understand how to eat a burger with the paper wrapped around it so the toppings don't drip out and fall apart. The grease didn't soak through the buns like other people talked about, but it definitely had some liquid coming off. Still, delicious! There were a lot of people in line to order when we got there, and we were worried it would take a long time, but the orders were coming out pretty rapidly and we didn't wait too long. They do have some coloring books and a puzzle to keep little kids entertained while waiting, which was much appreciated. They also have a small farm shop in the next room with various items for sale. Overall, we would come back to support the farm-to-table concept, but not necessarily because of the food.

I added a side of "Smashfries" (cheese & bacon covered fries). My wife got the "Smashtots" (cheese & bacon covered tatertots). My grandson ordered the Double Truffle Mushroom Smashburger. Though it took a bit of time for our order to arrive (from what we saw, they have a hugh takeout business), it finally came out -- so hot we almost could not eat it. The Brisket Bacon Smash was enormous and incredibly favorable - a bit messy with BBQ sauce ah dripping. My grandson's Mushroom Smash was significantly smaller than ours - almost like a mini-burger - but he said it was also hot, favorable and delicious. Both the Smashtots and Smashfries truly justified the term, "loaded", being covered in bacon and almost swimming in delicious melted cheese (not the typical Cheez-Wiz dip). They have a unique selection of fountain drinks (Dragon Juice, etc.) which were not quite as good as they sounded, so I wound up sticking to the standard soda. The cost is not exorbitant but Smashburger is not cheap. Their burgers cost $10-$14, but the amount of food you get makes it feel worth the price. I compare that to another premium burger joint like Five Guys which has a similar cost for their burgers, but the value just does not feel be the same, which is why I stopped going to Five Guys. The ONLY negative about the entire visit, was that one of the persons waiting on us had dreadlocks literally down to her knees. Hair like that in a restaurant environment is always less than desirable. But it appeared well kept and so was a relatively minor issue. All in all, Smashburger is was a delightful new restaurant discovery; one which I hope to visit often.

They have a pretty extensive menu for a burger joint, with nine Valhallas (stuffed burgers), almost 2 dozen signature sandwiches (think patty melts), several regular burgers, hotdogs, and several sides including onion rings (they were out today), tots, several iterations of fries, and nachos. I ordered the Jana - a Valhalla stuffed with Swiss and Muenster cheeses and mushrooms, topped with a fried egg and "Viking Sauce," a sort of chili or meat sauce that seems to be made from turkey. It's huge- I practically had to unhinge my jaw like the Midgard Serpent to bite it! This is a $15 burger and it is well worth it. Understand that when they say "stuffed burger," it's basically two burgers with the stuffing squashed between them on a nice, big bun. I may not need to eat again today. My Bride got the Frigga sandwich - a beef patty with bacon, caramelized onion, Gouda cheese and grilled pineapple tidbits. At $11.50, it's reasonably priced, and must have been good- she wolfed it down like it was Tyr's hand. We opted for combos so we both got tater tots crispy enough to do ASMR videos with and drinks- they have both fountain and bottled drinks available. We had one of each. With Newport News' exorbitant meals tax, lunch came to $46 before tip. I'm not even mad about it- it was worth every penny. An excellent meal with some great customer service. There was a big group of people (maybe 10-12) in there when we arrived that was eating up a lot of the attention of the one waiter. Also, we had a long wait for food because they actually ran out of steak that was prepped and so they had to prep more and grill it up for the burrito.
