Years ago, Sophia and I ate here for lunch and liked what we ordered. Just over the weekend, we stopped by just for the 2nd time for a repeat. The two of us hardly travel to Poquoson, but drove to the area to check out another place for dessert. Let's see how this visit turned out. We were greeted by the staff when we walked inside. They had a lot of customers for lunch and were busy serving them at tables and the bar area. The decor was well kept and spotless. You can tell they take really good care of the business. After a few minutes lookimg over the menu, we were ready to order. I selected the Pork Belly Cuban sandwich which came with their homemade chips. It was a really good lunch. Both the pork belly and sliced ham were cooked very well and plenty. I forgot what sauce they included (I believe it was chimichurri) really elevated the flavor in my opinion. And there was enough chips as a side which were crunchy and full. Sophia ordered a chili dog which she enjoyed. 1631 had us full for lunch. We'll be sure to stop by the next time we're in town. This is such a lovely gem in Poquoson. The ambiance is comfortable and cozy with darker features and lower lighting. It can become busy during the dinner time hour but generally its not difficult to find seating. The servers are super friendly and dont rush you. The food comes out pretty quickly and my favorite are the homemade tortilla chips and queso. read more

They have a more expansive breakfast menu on Sunday that they are planning to expand to Saturday. Overall, the food is very good across the various menus from morning to evening. My table had a variety of food. The burger, burger patty and brisket was very good. Their sauerkraut was wet and very good. 1631 has an eclectic selection of whiskey as well. They have a variety of normal brands, but also have the oddity of Weller style CYPB, of course, for the right price. I recommend 1631 for the expensive. If you like it, you'll be back. read more

The service here was amazing! Our server was very nice and made a really good drink when I wasn't sure what I wanted! Food was to die for. Chef Aaron was amazing and even talked to us for a few. I don't think I've ever had a burger that tasted this good! Also definitely get the pork belly and pretzel bites. I got the steakhouse burger and like I said was cooked to perfection. Stoped for a quick bite and to try their bourbons. I wasn't too impressed by the steak bites but the sauce was great. The pork belly bites were delicious and used the steak sauce with that! The burger was also okay. The drinks were good but honestly would've been better if I knew exactly what they were serving. They had a food menu but all the drinks are written on little blackboards above the bar. I didn't feel like getting up and leaving my table to read the whole drinks menu. They should just provide another menu. Decor is interesting - it's supposed to give off a dark cozy vibe with black walls and fire on the tv screens. We came as a party of 4, my kids had pretty basic burgers, my wife had the chicken sandwich and I had the steakhouse burger. Pros: Atmosphere, homemade chips, burger cooked to a perfect medium and the chicken sandwich. Room to grow: Waitress was inattentive and sat at the bar with her head in her hands, burger was pretty bland even with the toppings, soda choices of Sprite, Dr. P, Diet Coke and ginger ale, pretzel bites were rubbery. We've been here a few times for lunch. In the mornings they run a coffee bar! Location (4/5): location is inside a plaza, so there's always plenty of parking. The only down side is the restaurant space is on the smaller side, so if you're waiting for an order it's a little awkward because you basically have to stand right next to seated patrons. Also if they've got a lot of diners and you want to eat there, it could be a wait. Service (5/5): the staff are always friendly and attentive. You're usually greeted as soon as you walk in the door. When I was waiting around for a takeaway, the manager or owner asked me how long I was waiting and went back to talk to the kitchen staff. He walked back out and gave me an update and my food was out quickly. I was impressed by that quick service! Ambience (5/5): super cool detail everywhere, from the ceiling to the shelves to the signs. To me it reads steampunk speakeasy, but that's me. It's definitely a fun place to dine. Food (5/5): the burgers here are excellent! Everything was hot to the table and also hot for takeaways, well seasoned and cooked well. We definitely will be back to try more of the menu. read more

A burger with bourbon is always a winning combination - this hidden little tavern in the "Poquoson Farm Fresh Shopping Center" offers a good variety of both. I tried a Barrel Proof Burger with their home made chips, both were deliciously fresh and flavorful. The service was great... both fast and friendly. I did not try a bourbon although their selection was quite large and other options were also available. The atmosphere was pleasant, dark and moody. It's very small and I imagine it fills up fast at times, the website states they're not taking reservations at this time. I was there for dinner on a Monday night, the bar was full but a couple tables still available. They're closed Tuesday and Wednesday for dining but open 7 days a week in the mornings for coffee. In summary, the burger was extremely good although a little pricey in my opinion... the bourbon selection was extensive and worth a trip in for a try. read more

Wanted to try this place for a while, just took us forever to get here. Inside it's decorated super nice, gives a pub vibe. The restaurant is clean. The waitstaff was friendly and accommodating. I got the kids quesadilla for my son, but it didn't come with chips and salsa so I asked if it could be added but they said they can't sell it a la carte (strange) but my waitress made it happen and I appreciate that. My husband got the barrel proof burger, they forgot his add on's but the burger was good anyhow. They did take them off the bill though. I got the beef nachos and they were pretty good, I enjoyed them. We would probably revisit without my child because he's a picky eater anyhow. My family and I decide to try something new on a Saturday for an early lunch. We arrived and the place was dead but the waitress was nice and welcoming. I order pork belly tacos. My dad ordered chicken tacos. My mom and sister both ordered beef nachos. The pork belly was very underwhelming and tasted like burnt thick bacon. The nachos were okay but tasted pretty much like what I can make at home. My friend and I were excited to try this new place as we had seen it mentioned in some of the local articles and seen it being built in the center of town. As we walked in, we were both excited and happy to see that the interior, former a hot dog joint, had been entirely revamped and modernized. At 4:50pm, the place was empty, excluding one middle-aged man and his son. The rest of the people in the restaurant were either the owners or the employees. After taking a seat by the window, the waitress walked over to the table and asked what we would like to drink. Both my friend and I ordered waters to start, as we began to scour over the menu to see all that this place had to offer. Immediately I was shocked when I turned over the paper menu to see that the burgers, quoted as "premium", started at $16. There was a build-your-own option that started at $14, but each topping was an additional charge. While the burger options seemed nice and well-crafted, I have to admit that these options were not something completely new or unheard of in the industry. At the same time, I spoke to the waitress and told her that I thought the prices were a tad too high for the options they had as well as the primary customers they were targeting in Poquoson.The waitress argued a bit with me, but she left it alone with the mindset of "to each their own" and went to fix our drinks. In the process, the waitress called the owner over to our table to speak with me about my concerns. He walked over to our table and greeted me with a smile and a firm handshake before sitting down at the table next to ours. I proceeded to tell him my thoughts on the pricing and offering my perspective on why the pricing was too high for the area and clientele.With each of my criticisms, he became more and more disgruntled and displeased with me. When I asked him questions, he tried to divert the conversation to questions like these: - "Why should you care? You don't even live here!" - "What do you know? Have you ever owned or managed a restaurant?" - "What are you trying to sell me?" (Honestly, I'm not sure why he made this comment. It still baffles me) I responded to him with cold hard facts. What was his response? "You can go across the street and get a $5 burger! You can go down to TJ's and get $13 burger! I'm not competing with them, because I'm selling gourmet burgers! I'd put my workers and burgers up against theirs any day!" I again responded with more facts about the common consumer in Poquoson and he became more and more belligerent. He even made a hurtful comment about the fact that I was "just a teacher", as if I knew nothing about restaurants or management. However, he crossed the line when he decided to say the following phrase: "I don't need your fucking business. Take your stupid bullshit somewhere else!" All in all, I will NEVER go back to this place as long as it is open, which I suspect will not be long. I truly urge all of my friends in Poquoson and Hampton Roads to stay away from this place and avoid its unruly owner at all costs. What he did was tasteless, rude, and unprofessional from an owner to a potential customer who was simply providing feedback based on my knowledge and experience as an avid restaurant-goer and Yelper. I would advise you to avoid this place, and especially it's owner at all costs. Save your money and get a better burger at one of the other local options. ------------------------------------------------ Below, you can see a breakdown of my major concerns: 1) Claimed to be "gourmet" and "premium" but served drinks in plastic cups. 2) Prices were high for products and options. Burgers ranged from $16-22 and only came with POTATO CHIPS! If you wanted another side option, you had to pay an up-charge (ranged from $3-6) 3) Offered no specials or incentives to come in on off nights (I.e. Wife and I decided to try 1631 out, seemed relatively busy from the outside. Greeted at door, was sat and promptly met Brittany, waitress. She asked if we had been here before, and when we told her we hadn't she went over the menu with us. Of note, she clarified that all burgers are cooked medium, or as they say on the menu, "with pink." Brittany gave us a few minutes to deliberate, and we decided on our order- onion tanglers as an app, the bourbon proof burger, and the chili cheese burger. Each burger comes with handmade potato chips. We asked for the garlic parm chips as a replacement with one of the burgers, but were told that they are appetizer only. Would have happily paid an up-charge, don't know why this wasn't an option. The onion tanglers came out first, and I have mixed feelings on them. The portion size is very meager- the serving plate, a "hot plate," was more than half empty space. With that said- they are seasoned well and the sauce they come with smoky and creamy. It's a good paring. Only real complaint here is the size. The burgers came out after a short wait- same plating as the app. We tried the handmade chips first. They are severely inconsistently cooked- they are crunchy in some spots and soft and undercooked in others. The seasoning is a wild ride. Some of the chips are loaded in salt, some are completely void. Pepper was slightly more consistent, but not by much. The burgers were a disappointment. Clearly overcooked and lacking seasoning (ironic considering the chips). The chili cheese burger was salvageable due to the chili, which has a nice heat and consistency. The Bourbon Barrel Proof didn't really have a saving grace. Onions were bland, Smoky Gouda was basically cooked off it, and without something to save it, it really felt flat. Without Brittany clarifying about the cooking style, or without it being stated on the menu, we would just assume they cook all burgers well done. Definitely a down note. As for the ambiance- place is designed very well. The ceiling tiles are a very nice touch, the low lighting gives off speakeasy/ dive vibes. This is in stark contrast to the pricing, which seems to go for something much more upscale- and clearly misses that mark. Once 5:30 hit, people started piling in, and the close, comfy vibe gave in to a cluster of loud noise, bumping elbows and little to no personal space. Personally I found the high-top seating with low back chairs to be uncomfortable, but I can get over that. As for a TL;DR: Atmosphere (before 530): 7/10 Atmosphere (post 5:30): 2/10 Service: 8.5/10 (Brittany was great!) Apps: 5/10 Burgers: 2/10 Price for value: 2/10 read more

A large selection of specialty burgers (you can also make your own), tasty sounding appetizers, and taco options which sounded great (we went specifically for burgers so didn't order); provide plenty of options to choose. Staff was pleasant and attentive. Outside is pretty unassuming, but inside is clean w/ a speakeasy/hipster vibe. Interior isn't huge, w/ a handful of high tops, regular tables, and a small couch sitting area if you just want to go for drinks...obviously bar seating too. I saw the pork belly bites- those looked good too. My friend got a burger and she said it was super good. One criticism I would say is that there's no actual menu for drinks and bourbons. They had a good selection of the bourbon there and the staff was super friendly and attentive. it is very quaint and we found seats right away at the bar. Met the owner and he told me about this place. My husband and I went there for lunch. Admittedly hands down the best chili cheese burger that I have ever had. The burger was served with fresh made potato chips. Also tried the cucumber salad just like the cucumber salad in Germany. Tasty as hell. My husband ordered the steak nachos delicious!!!
