Besides Waffle House, this is your best go to for late night food. They are open until 3am. Several times I have been thru here and they have given me the wrong order, of course I check it and drive back thru and they can't take it back because it's been in my car, so bonus I get extra meals free. Make sure to check your order before you drive off. I enjoy the big box meal, you can customize your burger and get 2 sides and a drink. Good bang for your buck. I don't know whether to chock this up to the good old fashioned overhype. Or if it really was just a so-so burger. Probably a combination of both. I have heard about Cook Out for a while. We actually got one in my hometown, but it was pretty far for a fast food burger. So I have not been yet. But when we were on a road trip and one was across the street from where we got gas, I figured it was about time. I don't know what I expected from a fast food burger. But with all the hype between other west coast vs east coast chains, you expect it to be in the same league. It was not. I got the double burger with fries. It was good, but not great. It doesn't matter which side of the drive-thru you use, they're both equally inept. The walk up window is slow and nobody pays attention to it, especially if you've gotten out of your car to bring them the drive-thru order they've gotten wrong. This location used to be great but in the last year they've gone downhill. The staff is still courteous but that's all they've got going for them. I don't normally review larger chain restaurants, but I wanted to review this one so as to better document my travels across the U.S. My friends and I had stopped by this particular Cook Out location on our road trip from Nashville, TN to Asheville, NC. I had suggested this place because I had read about it on Reddit and how their meal sets can come with things like chicken quesadillas or milk shakes. Lo and behold, they were right: you can indeed get a meal where you could get additional entrees, basically, as sides, as well as a float or shake. So, what can a vegetarian get here? Not too much, but the crew here were super nice and they had made me a quesadilla sans meat. For my sides, I had their hushpuppies and fries, and I washed it all down with a Cheerwine float. All of this ended up costing me $5 and some change. I couldn't believe how unbelievably cheap the food was. During my most recent visit I ordered the Chicken Strip Club sandwich (bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo) and large french fries. The sandwich is comprised of three large deep fried chicken strips served on a hamburger bun. The bacon has a salty crunch, the lettuce was fresh and the tomato was firm. The cheese topping the chicken strips was a slice of yellow American that created a creamy delicious blanket over the steaming-hot white meat chicken. It's what I grew up calling "northern Alabama/middle TN" style pork, characterized by a briny vinegary taste to the meat. Coleslaw on top (obvs), and you're golden! Other highlights. Unfortunately we had to find something for dinner last minute. I didn't know this was drive through or walk up and take home. First time visit from friends' raving reviews. Their burgers are thick and juicy. Nothing like a skinny fast food burger. They customized both our burgers with what we wanted. Their fries are cut with the skins in and had lots of flavor! The shakes are tremendously thick! Lots of flavors available as well. Next time we have to pick up dinner last minute I would definitely go here. It's convenient, especially when it's 9:00pm and I really want a late-night burger (that's better than the regular fast-food chains). Yet the Bearden location of Cookout has been disappointing most every time. Tonight, the kid who took my order could not have cared any less about his job. Service at the order kiosk was snarky and short, and service at the window was cold and impersonal. The burger was dry and lukewarm, and the fries were rubbery and only slightly warmer than room temperature. Other nighttime trips to the Bearden Cookout have included listening to employees complain, either about the job itself or about having to work an understaffed restaurant.
