In Barrie, Kawartha Dairy is a classic parlour just a short drive from the beachfront. The shop has over 40 ice cream flavours to suit your heart's desire. Initially we had trouble picking & eventually staff forgot about us. Salty Caramel Truffle and Moose Tracks are popular flavours. We stacked both fresh scoops in a small size cup that's still huge! Each spoonful is fairly rich & creamy. The salt in the caramel balanced one another well (highly recommend), while Moose Tracks was a chocolate delight to satisfy the sweet tooth. Milkshakes can also be made from any scoop. We tried the Muskoka Mocha and Pistachio Almond in this form. The mocha ice cream was perfect for coffee lovers while almond slices added a crunch to the green pistachio shake although flavours were a bit artificial. Skip it or hit it? A visit to Kawartha Dairy always puts us in a good summer vibe after a beach day in Barrie!

It has been popular among locals since they opened in 2008. The prices are quite reasonable at $3 for 1 scoop and $4 for 2 scoops. Even banana splits are only $5. All prices include taxes! We had a 2-scoop cone: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Pralines & Cream. Both scoops were creamy and tasty. My son really loved them but I did manage to get a little bit of both flavours. There is some savoury food served too like hot dogs, fries, poutine, and coffees. It is owned by a husband and wife team: George and Irene. Both are very pleasant people. They love having fun signs such as: "adults must be accompanied by children" and "children left unattended in this store will be sold to the circus". You can only pay by cash or e-transfer. There is no phone number because I can see they are extremely busy. You can still contact them via social media. There are picnic tables outside. During pandemic times, all staff and customers wear face masks and there is plexiglass used. Only one family is allowed in the small order area at a time. Just outside the entrance, you can be entertained by a famous saxaphone player, Orlando (a Cuban), during nice the afternoons. Today (2021-09-05), we were lucky to also have a guest keyboardist also from Cuba. There is no free WiFi. It is wheelchair  accessible. You can use a washroom by request. The ice cream sold here is Kawartha Dairy, so that bit is pretty standard. But the servings are pretty big & a single is only $3 and a double $4, including tax. So it's cheaper than going to a Kawartha outlet They only accept cash & etransfer. The guy is pretty friendly, though there were some ice crystals in the ice cream.

I tried the blue raspberry sorbet (dairy free) and lavender lemonade first to share. Both were delicious that I had to go back for more! I'm so glad I did because I got pistachio almond, which was the best flavour imo. I find many places don't do pistachio well. Sometimes it tastes "soapy". But here, it didn't have that and tasted like real pistachio. That's probably because they had tons of crushed pistachios and almonds in the ice cream. So good!! Highly recommend this place.
