A welcome addition to the Schenectady small business retail scene, it's very on-brand, and I'm here for it. I was able to get quite a few Schenectady-centric Christmas gifts here, and since I always try to support local makers and businesses first, this shop made it super easy - lots of one-stop-shopping potential. My haul included: - two ornaments for the Christmas trees of my Schenectady born-and-raised sisters who no longer live in the 518 - a cute little crocheted elf for my 5-month old niece made my a local granny - a rather stunning wooden bowl, handmade by a local engineer/former colleague of the owner who parkates in woodworking as a hobby - Electric City themed gifts for my boss, who's a Schenectady guy at heart, including a wooden/metal hybrid bottle opener with "ELECTRIC CITY" boldy branded on the front, a pint glass with a cool 70s-esque, retro font ("ELECTRIC CITY"), matching sticker (for the laptop!), and a coaster, but not just any old boring coaster. This one had an illustrated scene printed on glossy enamel depicting a Schenectady police officer playing basketball with a child. Not only did this fit my theme, but the I knew the coaster I chose (there were several different ones) would be significant because his father is a retired Schenectady cop. I guess the pictures on the coasters were part of a public art project, where Schenectady-themed scenes were drawn and then selected to appear on merchandise for the Greenmarket and other items, like these coasters sold here. This is a rough Cliffs Notes version of the project, but it was cool learning about it, knowing it was part of something bigger and community focused. It's the little touches like that which make gift giving feel so special, and I know I wouldn't have found any of those beautiful, thoughtful, local gifts without a shop like Schenectady Trading Co. It would have been even better if there was a small card with a write up about the art project, so I could have gifted the coaster with a bit more "purpose." I like it when I can include a write up about the artist or project or whatever interesting element might need further explaining to make the gift even more interesting. Aside from my local finds, there's plenty of other merchandise, and items that stuck out were a selection of Tough Traveler bags (hometown favorite!), "Electric City" and "Schenectady, Light Up the World!" apparel, a cool assortment of Schenectady inspired vinyl stickers, chocolates from Schenectady-based chocolate shop, Uncle Sam's, and quite a few other odds and ends. I'm thankful that shops like this exist, backed by business owners who have an appreciation for the city and realize there's a need for some Electric City gift giving magic. Wishing them lots of luck, and excited to see what type of programming the owner has in mind down the road (she hinted on wanting this to be more than a retail shop, with poetry nights and books clubs and other outlets for mental stimulation - bring it on!)

For example, I could select from over 100 upholstery fabrics for the chair I selected. In addition to the showrooms, there are numerous catalogs available online and paper copy. Support small local businesses when you can, especially when they are far better choices than the chain stores.

High-quality All-American-made furniture store set in an actual old barn, that also sells…read moreupholstery fabrics by the yard. The styles are mostly traditional American - Shaker, country, and simpler styles, not the more elaborate 19th century American variations on Victorian and pre-war overstuffed - but they do include a lot of fairly stodgy upholstered styles as well. They claim mostly Amish manufacturers, in small lots, and the basic woods are (supposedly) all American-grown - cherry, oak, walnut, hickory, and pine in evidence, not sure about maple and cedar, but the staff say they can order almost any piece in one of the basic woods. The owners are also the sales staff so it's a true small business. The only thing not great about Kugler's is the prices, which are full boat retail price. As in, $300 for a small cabinet, $1000 for a small dining room table, $1500 for an armchair, just for a sample. These are not outliers; they're typical. I've bought unfinished pieces of similar manufactured Amish origin at Adirondack unfinished for significantly less, but - those are unfinished and unupholstered, and the quality isn't really quite as high as the basic stuff at Kugler's. So it's not quite a competition so much as different ends of the same spectrum in the same basic vein. The true differentiator may be that you basically are going to be able to custom-order a piece with the wood, finish, and upholstery of your choice, for the most part; it's not true custom furniture as you're ordering a known type or style but it's pretty close in terms of customization within the range of choices. And they do have some very nice pieces. I'm a little reluctant to go to four stars without some evidence as to the long-term quality of the furniture, but then again you'd be waiting a while for that, presumably, so consider this a placemarker review in the meantime. But I also note I can't really afford to shop here for anything big, so I am out of my league - take that for whatever it's worth in terms of the star rating or the credibility of this reviewer.

I suppose it wouldn't have been so bad if I liked it. The bacon was not good. It was very greasy and kind of also dry and gritty. The egg had no seasoning. The toast was good the jam was good the hash browns were good. I don't enjoy them for breakfast. I did have the best fish sandwich I've ever had in my life there a long time ago it was a special. While I do understand that the ownership has changed and inevitably will give the store a different…read morevibe, my main issue has been that in the times I have been into this store since the change in ownership and management, the staff has been unpleasant and on one occasion in particular, made my friend and I feel very uncomfortable as she had a loud and extremely personal phone call during the entire time we were in the store without even acknowledging that we were there at all. I do think the selection has always been great, and I appreciate the emphasis on supporting local work, although that also seems to have changed a bit since the change. It is a pricey location for most things, but I do always enjoy seeing what is in the store, the card selection is consistently excellent, and it is a great place to find a gift!

The store clerk was friendly and welcoming as she greeted me and every customer in the store, offering assistance and information on the vast array of items. There were toys (mostly nostalgic toys and also unique games that you wouldn't find at a brand named chain store), items that were locally hand crafted, candies, tea, candles, books, kitchen knick knacks ....and the list goes on. The prices were average/the same you would see in a similar store, but this country store probably has the most varied items I've seen in one place. It's definitely a "must see" especially if you're looking for a gift or souvenir.
