I had foundational knowledge of what might be contributing to my condition, but I was struggling to create a consistent, sustainable regimen that would lead to lasting change. I had developed food sensitivities and new allergies seemingly out of nowhere, and after bouncing from specialist to specialist without answers, I was frustrated and looking for a comprehensive approach. Initially, Imagine Wellness felt promising. However, I quickly learned that their approach is largely "one size fits most" -- and unfortunately, I did not fit that mold. Early in the program, I was instructed to purge my pantry and eliminate anything not strictly anti-inflammatory. I followed directions carefully and threw out a significant amount of food. Just three months later, many of those same foods -- while not technically "anti-inflammatory" -- were deemed perfectly acceptable and even healthy additions. As someone who already follows a largely Mediterranean-style, whole-food diet and maintains an active lifestyle, simply moving those items to the back of the pantry would have been a far more reasonable recommendation. Instead, I wasted a substantial amount of money and felt unnecessarily restricted. After about three months, I did notice some improvement in my dietary limitations. However, the next phase involved purchasing numerous supplements. Shortly after starting them, I began feeling worse and noticed regression in my symptoms. When we reviewed the ingredient labels closely, we discovered that several supplements contained ingredients I was sensitive to -- in small amounts, but taken multiple times daily. The cumulative effect clearly mattered. This was later confirmed by my allergist and providers at the Mayo Clinic. Unfortunately, my concerns were dismissed by IW staff as "not possible," which left me with hundreds of dollars in unused supplements and little accountability from the program. The final concern involved my interactions with Dr. J. As a doctorate-prepared clinician trained in mental health, psychopharmacology, and neurotransmitter function, I have substantial expertise in these areas. Yet I consistently felt dismissed. My professional title was never used, and I was repeatedly referred to as "kiddo." I was often given minimal time to speak, and when I attempted to demonstrate understanding of complex material, I was met with comments such as, "Don't worry, I won't quiz you once I'm done." The tone felt condescending rather than collaborative. Respect and mutual acknowledgment of expertise matter -- especially in healthcare. I left those appointments feeling unheard and undervalued.
