To be fair, it may be that Heathers simply follows policies from parent company, Transforming Age. They arent exactly paragons of customer service either. All calls go to voice mail and I have never received a response to email inquiries. When submitting questions to Lang Nelson when considering their properties, I received an answer within a day. We are now moving to a Lang Nelson property, which also has more advanced care options when that time comes. Ironically, they used to own Heathers and it was hard to get an opening. Now, even in a tight housing market, they have more than 20 unrented apts. It's a downward spiral; less rental income means a tighter budget. A tighter budget means skimping on amenities and deferring maintenence, which will likely cause even more people to leave. Everyone here talks about how much it's gone downhill since TA bought it. Still, we had made good friends there, and when a 2 br opened up in December, we requested a transfer. We saw the apt twice, it didnt need major renovations and we assumed a February move in date. After no response or follow up we asked the director. We moved both our parents out of the facility due to our concerns for their safety and wellbeing. We raised concerns multiple times with several levels of leadership and did not see any significant change in care. We were assured that improvement was/is occurring but we did not see the fruit of these apparent efforts. We have concern for others seeking care. Be aware that a care facility can meet state assessment benchmarks but still provide substandard care on a day to day basis. We found this to be true here. The other negative reviews we read totally line up with our experience. Our loved ones deserve better.

My MIL was very nervous at first and there definitely was an adjustment period. But, the staff and other residence were super welcoming. After six months, she has found her people and has settled in. My father is 83 years old and suffers from multiple medical problems including dementia and unsteadiness secondary to peripheral neuropathy with frequent falls. We made a decision as a family to move him into the Heathers Manor in Crystal MN earlier this year. This turn out to be a nightmare of a decision for which I would give a negative star rating if I could. Three incidents during his first two weeks of residency that made us move him out of this facility as soon as possible. In the first incident a staff member came in to put him to bed a couple hours before his usual bedtime and he told her that he wasn't ready to go to bed yet. This staff member subsequently stormed out of the room and slammed the door shut. When he called the nurses station a couple hours later so that he could be put to bed, no one came to his assistance so he called 911 and the paramedics came to put him to bed. In the second incidents his significant other took him out for dinner. When she brought him back later that evening the entry door was locked. There was a pendant with a push button located near the door which was the activated but no one responded so his significant other had to knock in the door multiple times before someone came to open the door. The staff member who finally came to open the door 30 to 60 minutes later berated her for knocking on the door and said to her "we don't work in the cotton fields anymore." My dad has unsteadiness secondary to peripheral neuropathy and can't stand for prolonged periods of time and has had frequent falls so he couldn't stand outside waiting a long time for someone to let him in. Apparently he was given a code that he could've used to open the door but he has dementia and his significant other wasn't given the code. In the third incident he needed to be moved from his chair to his bed and the staff member who came to assist him scolded him for being "slow" and that he needed to "hurry up." My dad is a vulnerable adult and was paying top dollar to get the higher level of care that he needed and instead he was treated rudely and with disrespect. He paid the full amount due for the couple months he ended up spending there until we could find a new facility for him but they wouldn't refund him the $1500 move-in fee as it was "nonrefundable" which I think is criminal since he was ready to move out of the facility after his first couple weeks there because of his mistreatment. I filed a complaint with the Minnesota department of health. It turns out that another resident froze to death outside the facility around the time that my dad was locked out because he also was locked out and could not get back in. I would strongly recommend not to have your love one become a resident of Heathers Manor. If you know of any other social media sites that I can tell my dad's story I would be very appreciative as I want to let as many people know what a dangerous facility this place is.

We lucked out in choosing Home Instead to take care of our 90 year old mother. (she was 87 at the…read moretime). Their services are phenomenal, starting with the first call. Mom was in rehab and about to be released. She refused to let anyone in the family take care of her because she didn't want to be a "burden". Home Instead came to the rehab facility within hours of my call and it was smooth sailing after that. Their patient coordinator, office staff, care givers, and especially the owner, John Stuck have been so attentive we'd think we are their only client. John has been to see mom several times and each time it just brightens her day (he is quite personable). We have never had a problem with their services and whenever I call with a change, etc, their response time is lightening fast and handled as though we are family to them. They also have a pay scale to match the clients needs. We are currently on the companion care plan and when mom starts to decline, we can move up a notch to the personal care plan, etc. And mom likes the variety of care givers each day. She has the same 3-4 that rotate (24/7) and she never gets bored. Since mom never wants to leave her home, now she won't have to - because of Home Instead, she can stay home as long as she wants. She is living on her terms which has kept all of us sane. When the time comes that you ever need this type of care, save yourself a lot of time and call Home Instead first - you won't be disappointed.

My father passed on Sunday, September 2, 2018, after experiencing a heart attack during a physical…read moretherapy session. He stopped breathing and suffered brain damage from a lack of oxygen. When the EMTs arrived, they physically stabilized my father, but they didn't arrive at Robbinsdale North Memorial until an hour later. He spent a few hours in the ER, before being transferred the hospital's Intensive Care Unit. Upon hearing the news, I took the first flight back home and arrived around 1 am to see my father in the company of my shaken mother and a couple family friends. I wrapped my arms around my father when I first saw him, and then cried an ocean into his chest. It was the worst day of my life. I'll never forget it Two of the three nights, I slept beside him on a six, maybe seven-foot long vinyl couch where I saw countless physicians and nurses enter and leave throughout the night. They see this so often, I'm sure: Families in pain as a loved one slowly withers away. I never saw any visiting hours posted anywhere. Even if they did exist, though, they knew that they wouldn't apply to me. I love their staff. They never complained, eye-rolled, or seem annoyed when I asked for assistance. When I did ask for extra chairs, blankets, and general assistance with my father -- they did everything I asked, too. I also saw them carefully take care of my father with respect. Every two hours they moved him, so he wouldn't develop sores from staying in one position too long. Even though he no brain activity (known following the first CT scan), they still asked him for permission. I appreciated that. After learning that my father no brain activity following the second CT scan, I spoke to one of the doctors who suggested I remove my father's off of life support. And I did. Once he passed, and the waves of crying subsumed, the head nurse at the time came over to me and handed over several viles with my dad's heartbeat printed on it. I was so touched. I know this hospital has a good number of mixed reviews, but I genuinely thought they did an outstanding job taking care of my father. A time when I felt absolutely emotional wreck, they did their best. I did think they could've done a better job with providing me more information once I arrived (like who were all the staff touching and moving my father), but I won't hold that against them. I'd recommended Robbinsdale North Memorial Hospital's ICU to anyone, but I hope you never have to experience what I did. Other tidbits: * You can buy validated parking tickets in the gift shop ($15 for five). I don't recall the rates, but it'll save you much more money. * Nothing to rave about their cafeteria. * Hospital isn't in the best neighborhood.

I was told by a nurse in ICU (when I complained about visitor noise at 10:00 pm) that visiting hours are 24 hours a day and there's no guidelines on noise protection and it's OK for people in my room making lots of noise even though I was trying to sleep. I hope I don't ever have to go to that hospital again!!! It left me traumatized and when I got home I could hardly function due to anxiety attacks.
