I'm 31, I've been experiencing chronic pain since my teenage year and legitimately, this is the first MD who wants to treat the root of my cause instead of just throwing opioids at me and/or not genuinely believe how much pain I recently learned the bone spurs have been causing in my neck. Dr Marina Protopapas, who has been featured on NBC, was first referred by my chiro Chris Bruno and since then she and her team (fortunately Chris Van Zoeren has been there for 3 years) have been managing my pain levels working with my chiro. She is really busy but takes thee time to explain the procedure to you and/or your family members attending on what /why the procedure is being done. So does Chris. Once in the procedure room, she is ably assisted by Joseph Turay, music is played, I look away from the needle and her calm voice is letting you know what you will be feeling and when. Once over, she makes certain before you leave, you feel stable and will answer any questions (for example I show her exercise machines safe for my back). An amazing Doctor who also relies on Chris's determination on what procedure should be tried. The Office is managed by Andrea who meets, greets patiently with a cheery smile and Ms. Rashna is really helpful to get you checked in, make follow-up appointments and help with following up. I know there are more staff and all are very helpful. I make the trip at least once every month from Ashburn to Fair Oaks but it is well worth the time to have excellent care.

After temporary therapy, I was told to go through pre-op testing which involved lab testing, an EKG with a cardiologist and review by my primary physician. Once cleared I reported back to Dr. Ghauri who said they would get authorization from the insurance company. I was surprised as I expected to have authorization before the pre-op tests. Two weeks later I called the office as I hadn't heard from them. I was told that the procedure was denied by my insurance company. They said they had left me a voicemail, which I never received. The office should have contacted the insurance company before they required me to go through all the pre-op tests. My time with this practice was a waste.

I've suffered from a combination of Severe Anxiety with Panic Disorder, Associated Depression, and PTSD since I was 10; I've tried nearly every medicine on the market and nothing has been able to really improve my quality of life. I'm a mom of three with an intense career and going through a brutal custody battle, which has made it so much worse. It's $500 per infusion but I'm using my healthcare FSA and plan to pursue reimbursement from United Heathcare as well. The office is calm and lovely with no wait. My first session, the nurse (Angie?) was an IV needle ninja and reminded me of a Chinese Ping Pong Olympic match but with the fastest, easiest IV placement I've ever seen. The team was so thorough even though I was SO nervous about the dissociative experiences I had read about. They preventatively gave me Zofran for nausea and Versed for anxiety; I had a super comfy chair and crazy soft blanket I really want to buy for my house; and while the experience was VERY WEIRD, it wasn't unpleasant but felt very healing. Having read about music and the role in the treatment I played the Lord of the Rings soundtrack with the ups and downs and it was bizarre how it guided me through processing both my good memories and feelings and bad, but sort of helped me feel like I could overcome (a la Aragorn?). Highly recommend something like that to listen to. In a very weird trippy way I could FEEL the mental healing and I really mean that even in my now clear headed state. It's amazing, truly. My appointment was at 11:00-11:45, groggy feeling passed by around 12:15, by the time I was home just around 1 I had no problem getting back to work "fully there". My boyfriend was SHOCKED because he noticed a difference immediately. That's from one infusion. It's incredible and I can't believe it. Looking forward to tomorrow's and on Thursday!

I have seen the Nurse practitioner for years now, regularly. I have barely had a change to medication and never has Dr Peters suggested discussing a change. Without any notice, and after attempting to get a medication refilled for over a week now I was simply declined. Without any notice or reasoning. When I attempted to learn why, I was simply told that the nurse practitioner was no longer there and mg medication (which was prescribed by Dr Peters) would no longer be available and that it was not up for discussion. There was zero consultation or consideration for the patient (myself). The office staff is absolutely horrendous and always has been. I have documented occurrences of medical Botox going missing. I only continued going here because of the NP and she cared about her patients. If you are looking for a neurologist I would highly suggest you look elsewhere.

The epidural shots will go smoother when your pain levels are less than a five. I was referred to Dr. Gordon by a neurosurgeon to receive a series of epidural injections for pain management caused from herniated discs. He answered all of my questions and provided limited but useful recommendations to help mitigate my pain levels when I had/have sciatica flare ups. Understanding that there isn't much you can do: build core strength, stretch, walk, etc. if you decide to forgo surgery. Best of all, he even took time between patients to see me same day when I had debilitating pain from a sciatica flare up. I couldn't stress how awesome this was and I was very appreciative. Even though that shot hurt significantly, which, should've followed my own recommendations to never get a shot during a flare up. The procedures are quick, you're in and out in less than 30 minutes. During each injection he walks you through what he's doing, where he's injecting, the pain you can expect, pressure, etc. "that pressure is good news, it means we hit your nerve." Great, yeah, except it just feels like a meteor crashed into your back causing a massive tidal wave of fire, fury, pressure and pain that begins in your butt and ends at each end of your body. By the third shot, I was just like look Doc, I don't want to know the details, give me the gas, give me the shot and get me out of here. If I had to complain about the office, it's with their time management and lack of communication. Of my five appointments, two of them I was waiting in the waiting room for over an hour. Additionally, I didn't find out that they offered gas to offset the pain and anxiety of having a needle jabbed into the nerve of your spine which royally pisses your sciatica off until the meds kick in until after my second injection. It would have been nice to know and an option I would have taken following the first shot. These things are painful. That said my third injection went a heck of a lot smoother than my first two and I have to thank the nurse who gave me the gas, held my hand, and rubbed my back while I screamed expletives into the pillow following the injection.
