Hanging out on the southside is much different than the northside night out. I prefer the southside and it's unpretentious, laid back feel. Although I am biased since I grew up on the southside. Cork and Kerry is one of the best bars to frequent, not only does the woodwork and stained glass make the pub classy, the beer garden is an awesome place to hang out in the summer...or even the fall when the heaters and tents are up. Although Cork and Kerry is reviewed here, why no Keegan's mention? Keegan's is directly next door and when Cork and Kerry is too packed, and even when not!, it's a nice alternate. The owners and bartenders hail from the Emerald Isle and Keegan's has a definite traditional Irish pub feel. Located on the South Side of Chicago, you're entering the "south side pride" area! This bar is one of my favorites to go to, especially during the summer, where the beer garden is huge. The bar features a ton (at least 25) different beers on tap, while providing a decent Guinness pour! It's a great place to go and hang out, and there's no pressure to dress to impress. In the winter, it's awfully cozy too, with plenty of hand carved wood, and stained glass windows, it's fun to hang out! I like it but just not as much as everybody else does I guess. It is a bit narrow and cramped inside so I rarely go during the winter months. Once the beer garden opens up, then you've got some breathing room. The food is ok but nothing special at all. Good but not great...I'd rather go to Keegan's down the street. read more

I had a party at Cork & Kerry last year and spent a couple times down there planning it. Drinks are good-sized, Irish variety, and not too much $. Inside is narrow wood filled bar and tables, leading back to the best part of the bar - the garden patio, deck. This area is shut off by a door in the winter - but open once they put up the temp walls and heat lamps with a bar outside. In the summer it's filled and nice for a group or even your parents. Clean bathrooms, ok radio & jukebox, and plenty tvs. No food, but free popcorn. The owner is very nice and helpful and will help you with everything if you need to plan a party, and the staff was great too. They're planning to expand to next door in the next year. Only downside - the patrons can suck. Not all, just the uber s.side uber drunk ones. read more

I can definitely see the scenario that Jesse laid out in the previous review happening. The South Side Irish jock mentality at this place is strong, and can be sometimes overwhelming. Forced sterilization of those creeps is the only answer. But as for the bar itself? It's ok. Buckets are the way to go for this place; ordering individual beer is just plain stupid. The beer garden on a nice summer night is amazing. Despite the assholes there are usually some friendly faces around. No matter when you're there, you will run into someone you haven't seen in years. About the closest thing to a Wrigleyville, Lincoln park bar you will fin on the South Side. Not really the best place, but compared to the neighboring bars this place looks like a palace. I don't drink but to have party's here is a lot of $$ but it's all because the liquor. Having any sorts of partys like a birthday or Baptism is soooo much fun!! They have great food, and 5 star service. The jut box has lots of great music to break out dancing too. Cork and Kerry has been a Chi Town favorite since forever! read more

I really wish I could just give Beverly-MtGreenwood a rating. All of the bars in the neighborhood have terrible service. And the people are just so boring. I'm stuck between giving 2 or 3 stars, because is the best bar on western, but south side bars really are terrible if you're going there with your own good group of people, its fine. Cork and Kerry is alright - they have decently cheap drinks, a nice outdoor patio with plenty of seating (there is a bar outdoors as well), and plenty of seating indoors. However, the bar tenders are very slow and not very friendly, and the outdoor bar only has select beers/alcohol. I tried making conversation with one of them and they barely even smiled. Boring. Their shots were also out of a small plastic cup that basically makes you spill half of the drink everywhere and is very small (the shot should have been about 2 times the size of what it was). It looks nice on the outside, but the inside was not nearly as impressive. read more

I don't understand the praise that the beer garden gets. Yes it's nice, but they kick you out of it by midnight I think? So when everyone is forced back inside it is next to impossible to get to the bar. I've been here many times and it's almost always unpleasantly packed. I've been to roughly 1,000 bars in my life, including this one years ago as a semi-regular. I haven't been here in a while but was here last Friday for a family party. If there is a worse pour in the United States for a mixed drink I've never seen it. Brutal. I understand the "measured pour" but this was worse than that by quite a bit and in an Irish bar on Western Avenue. Not a bad place but my God, order beer or wine if you have to go. As Mike T. said this is a very "Beverly" bar, most of the people drinking their have lived within two miles of the place all their lives. Don't expect to be greeted with smiles and hugs. That being said, on off nights it's not a bad place. The beer garden is big and decorated like a Fridays. They have free popcorn and sometimes order pizza for the bar. Lots and lots of TV's to watch the Sox game. Service is ok. You can't get a freebie out of the bartender no matter how much you spend or tip, unless of course you went to grade school with her (about 30% of the patrons). The beer selection is pretty good, although most people are drinking Miller Lite in a bottle so the lines get gummy. They added a new room but I guess its for parties.
