I've fallen for this friendly neighborhood wine store. While it is not massive in size, it has an excellent and well-curated selection, including a prominent rack at center for quality wines circa $15 and under. A diverse assortment of wines organized by region as well as a collection of quality spirits as well. What really sets this place apart for me though is the friendly, low-key nature of the owner and her staff. Let's face it, wine and booze can pretty much sell themselves. But it's much nicer in the casual, positive vibe here than in some pretentious shops where I'm afraid to ask questions or betray any semblance of wine ignorance. Tastings here are low key and generous, advice or suggestions given with enthusiasm and care. Plus you've got to love a wine shop where the owner dresses up as a minion for Halloween and is ready to dole out candy to anyone who wanders into a wine shop with a kid--talk about local 'hood friendly! read more

I'm starting with three stars. The wines are decent, the staff is meh. I say this because, I've been going to this store since the pandemic and they have not ever had ONE POC working in the store. It's disturbing because, the neighborhood is balanced. Most businesses in the area reflect that but, this one has never. Maybe no one is applying....I don't know but, I won't shop here anymore until I see myself in that store. I must say how impressed I am with the team at CorkScrew. I called as I usually do wanting to try something new with no idea what I wanted Chris had a few great questions and helpful grub hub instructions and amazing wine show's up at my door. What amazes me is they always, I really mean always get it right. I own the business next door and for 7 years I've never gotten a bottle of wine I didn't like and I never write the name down or remember what I got last time. I will not be returning to the store even though it's the closest wine store to me because: 1) I received rude treatment from a salesperson who was taking issue to my opening the fridge more than once. (This has NEVER happened to me in a wine store and I'm a French-speaking eunophile who had visited the store a dozen times.) 2) I found it odd that every time I wanted to redeem points accrued there was always some sort of a problem and the sales people seemed lazy about facilitating it. read more

I'm not much of a wine drinker but I know the owner so whenever I need wine for an event I go to corkscrew. Karin is always friendly, fun and easy to talk to. She'll help me to select wines, but in edition to this, she makes it a fun place to be. I've been to backyard events with music which we're really enjoyable. The place is very child friendly as she is a mom herself and is tolerant of children being in the store. She has a lot of deals and specials and generally treats her costumers really well. I'd lament that Corkscrew isn't closer to my apartment, but I *rejoice* that it is so close to my office in the Navy Yard. Every time I stop in I feel at ease instead of overwhelmed. It's easy to feel a bit daft when surrounded by bottles, but I always leave with exactly what I'm looking for, thanks to the very informative and friendly staff. One of my favorites so far has been a rose from Morocco. I left with two, and my dinner party was very happy. I came back for more and was so sad to find they were sold out for the season! Fortunately, the owner (I think) pointed me in the direction of two other roses that were equally brilliant, if not better. I highly recommend this shop to anyone that lives nearby, works nearby, or plays nearby. And please, Corkscrew, if you're listening, consider opening a spot in Bushwick. I can't say how happy I am that Corkscrew has landed - practically outside my apartment. Actually, I can say.....I'm very happy! First-up, they know their stuff but present their options to you in an unpretentious and non-judgemental way. They are fun but professional....and they love my dog! I like what they do with artwork, events and generally having a community focus. If Myrtle Ave adds more small businesses like Corkscrew we are going to be a way better neighborhood for it. I can't say too many good things about this shop, it's cozy, well stocked, and has an incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff who seem to know the ins and outs of every bottle they carry. I live down the street but never had a chance to try this place. Today was my second visit this week (don't judge). I must say, its refreshing to be met with such friendly employees who really know their shit. I described the kind of wine I wanted within a specific price range and was immediately shown three and given full explanations of each. No pretentious people here. Great wines at affordable prices. Will definitely be returning. ***After I posted this I read the other reviews - much of the same sentiments! I'm glad I'm not the last person left in Brooklyn who hates pretentious wine stores. read more

I absolutely ADORE this wine shop! I recently moved to a Clinton Hill and I was so sad to leave my old wine shop behind. They were open on 4th of July (smart business!) and they had a fantastic selection of wines to choose from. We were looking for a Rose and they had an outstanding selection that was refridgerated and a magnum at that! We also were surprised to find a piquepoul that we love that was also chilled. Really great addition to the neighborhood. I've been coming since it opened and love their wine selection. The other day I had a colleague announce he was leaving the office and moving onto other things. He's a great guy and loves wine, but I'm quite a novice and asked for advice from the owner, Karin. She pointed me towards two wines (sadly I forget the names) that she said would be a hit. AND THEY TOTALLY WERE!! My colleague was so happy and knew exactly the type of wine it was and what was special about it. I always give credit where it's due so thanks again Karin for your helpful suggestions. Love this place. A Goldilocks story over a few days: Visiting from SF. Was putting together a little wine flight for the family at xmas. Nothing fancy, sometimes it's fun to just take a minute with some different wines and a little cheese and whatnot. The plan: get some wines in Brooklyn, try them with some friends, go back and get more of the good ones & bring them up to MA on the train. Went to 2 other stores in Brooklyn that were recommended. The person at the first gave us 5-6 suggestions with waaaay too many adjectives. Hard to keep it all straight. We got 3. 1 decent, 2 meh. Next place was more "Oh, it's really great! I'm drinking a lot of that right now" Maybe I expect too much, but I want a little more than that, info-wise. Got 3... meh, meh, meh, and a dessert wine that was great, but was the only one they had, so can't give much credit there. Went to Corkscrew which was, of course, 3 blocks from where we were staying, down the street from our friend's place. We told Conor what we were looking for and price point. He went straight to the shelf, pulled out 6 bottles, lined them up and gave clear and succinct descriptions of each. Where it's from, body/weight, a few taste notes, maybe mouth feel. Got 4, hoping for 3 that we liked. All four were great, 1 French, 1 Aussie, 1 Croatian, 1 New York. All really tasty and super different from one another. Came back for all but the French, which we would've gotten too if we had room for any more in our bags. And out of 8 people, each one was someone's favorite. Home run! And in my (at least when I'm in NY) backyard all along. read more
