I've been meaning to try this place for so long, and I finally did! This is the classic neighborhood bar. Small and intimate, intriguing wallpaper, locals who look like regulars. The drinks were fairly priced and tasty, and the bartender was very sweet. The service here is excellent; the waitress was very attentive. There is a good amount of seating at the bar, as well as a few tables in the back. There's also a smaller, more private section with a handful of tables off to the side. If you're not from the neighborhood, Congress Bar is near the F/G line and surrounded by excellent restaurants if you're looking to grab some food beforehand. As such, the only alcohol available was a combination of what she drank herself (anisette and some sort of cherry liqueur) and truly awful booze that was purchased some 20 years ago by someone else, and left there because no one wanted it (Black Velvet whiskey, Early Times bourbon, some gin I didn't recognize) and Courvoisier. (The latter really grew on me, and I was sad when I finished the bottle.) Even if that HADN'T been my only experience with alcohol for the past couple months, believe me when I tell you that the Mezcal Paloma that Congress Bar is offering to go right now is the tastiest treat I've ever tasted. Congress is a small, but mighty neighborhood cocktail bar (with a room in the back). They have your classics, but also use some unique ingredients for others (like the Pok Pok drinking vinegar). They have a pretty good craft beer selection as well. Great spot for a drink in a dark, homey environment. The tap list is not long (8ish choices) but there's always a range (stout to IPA to sour/saison) and it is regularly changing. I myself have never made it past the beer, since there's always something I've wanted to try, but my friends who have gotten cocktails have enjoyed them. The bar up front is comfy (no TVs, don't try to catch a game here), but there's seating toward the back of the main room (though the benches are crazy uncomfortable) and a back room. I've rarely been when there wasn't a table available, so it's a good spot if you're looking for someplace to assemble with 3+ folks for a last minute get-together. Prices are on the high side of average, but nothing outrageous. Note: Congress is very much NOT cash-only, unlike what some other reviewers said (at least it wasn't the last time I was there, which was just a couple weeks ago). read more

Really love this neighborhood bar! It used to be an old produce shop called Jim & Andy's, and they still kept the cute old farmhouse wallpaper on some of the walls to preserve the shop's legacy. The bar is pretty small, so it must get crowded, but the atmosphere was very pleasant and romantic with a smaller crowd. The bartenders clearly put a lot of care and effort into making great cocktails and it was fun to watch them at their craft. However, they weren't very friendly or attentive. They made a good cosmopolitan (although it was not served in a traditional martini glass). The atmosphere and decor is minimalist and artsy, but romantic. I am personally dubbing this place *the* coolest spot in the area for late night drinks with a date. If you want somewhere that's low-key, romantic, yet still has a speakeasy vibe, and isn't packed to the walls with people, this is your spot. I mean, even the windows are fogged up on a cold day because it's so warm inside -- and because that's another requirement for any place to feel secretive, under the radar and like you're living in the prohibition era (says me, a millennial, who is definitely a subject matter expert on that era). The cocktails are pricey (hence the minus one star), but the environment, atmosphere and service make up for it. There are also a number of beers available if that's more your style.
