With so many favorites dishes, my ultimate favorite has to be a plate of rice, roasted meats and fried egg. With that being said, I cannot believe I never realized The Roast restaurant before! How dare I deprive myself from this heaven. Driving on 8th avenue's Chinatown in Brooklyn, I just happened to turn my head towards that corner (I believe this was destined) and saw the gorgeous meats hanging in the window. Sold. No need to say anymore. I was going in. Oh, roasted meats! Glorious, glorious Chinese roasted meats. Upon entering, the array of roasted meats they have is amazing. I got an order of roasted chicken, roast duck and roast pig over rice and it comes with greens! Yum! Two orders was like 14 dollars! Come on! You cannot beat that! Truly a hidden gem in a vast sea of restaurants lining 8th ave! The place is small and designed for takeout or quick eat and run if you choose to dine in. The best bbq meats in all of Brooklyn and I will bet a lb of char siew you can't find a better place at this price point! Prices are very affordable. We decided to try The Roast after seeing their display of ducks hanging in the window. I was hoping to have a duck bao, but that was not on the menu. Instead, we ordered a quarter duck with leg meat to go. The duck was as delicious as it looked! The quarter duck was $6.50. The half is about $11 and the full is about $20. You could also get a plate of duck over rice or noodles for $5.50. I saw some fresh bok choy prepared which looked delicious. My boyfriend and I came on a Sunday night to grab some quick to go Chinese food for his dinner around 7:30PM. Once we ordered by the door, a line started forming out the door so it definitely gets busy at times. He ordered roasted pork over rice and another order for his roommate. The guy taking our order actually gave us an extra order of roasted pork for free! Once we ordered, we sat at one of the tables to wait for our food. It took about 5 minutes for our order to come out. They have different sauces next to the kitchen, so don't forget to pick some of each up. Roasted pork over rice ($5.50) I took a bite of the pork and it was delicious (my boyfriend agreed). They had a good portion of actual meat to fat and the sauce that the pork was cooked in had a strong taste/scent to it which was interesting but I liked. This is my favorite place in borough park for Cantonese bbq and probably even better than some of the places in Manhattan Chinatown for quality. My go-tos are the roast duck with meifun and the preserved egg and pork congee. Service is fast and to the point. The roast pork and duck, over rice with a little bit of book choy, and a side of broth, has got to be the best $6 meal. The menu here reminds me of NY Noodletown and Yummy Noodle in the city. All of these places do noodle soups with the BBQ meats. And dumpling soup, with or without noodles. On my most recent trip, on a Sunday, my order came with a free order of braised pork. I have no idea why. It was on the receipt as Free Braised Pork. I do know that it was absolutely delicious and came with braised potatoes, which were also fantastic. I came here with a few friends and we ordered half a pound of BBQ pork and half a duck to share. The meat is fresh and there were so many ducks hanging in the window! The duck was quite tasty; the meat was tender and it was quite flavorful. The BBQ pork wasn't as flavorful except for the glaze on the outer ring, even though the meat was still quite tender. For half a pound of BBQ pork, it was about $7 and half a duck was about $10, which are decent prices for the quality of food! You can also get these dishes with rice or with noodles, but we opted just to get the meat! read more

Go to spot for all things Chinese bbq and roasted meats. I was attracted to this place by the carcasses hanging in the window. The char siu is, IMO, the best in BK ChinaTown. The roast duck is fatty with crispy skin, not overly greasy and full of flavor. The suckling pig provides a great crunch from the skin with the fatty, sweet and juicy meat. But the hidden gem at this place is the chicken wings. Prepared in the same style as the duck, the chicken wings are meaty and sweet. They get added flavor from the fat drippings from the ducks pigs and geese hanging above. The overall cost of this gastronomic adventure is low. The overall deal definitely earns this place 5 stars. read more

Do not come here expecting the same selection as at their parent store, Corner 28 in Flushing. This is a small hole-in-the-wall barbecue only restaurant with very limited seating. They sell very good Chinese barbecued fowl and meats at competitive prices but unfortunately unlike in Flushing there are no $1 duck sliders or sheng jian bao for sale. :-( read more

The soy sauce chicken pieces were ok, mostly from lower breast with more bones than meat (removed 1 Star). The price goes up $1 per additional choice of meat. Ive been going to Roast 28 in Flushing and Brooklyn pretty consistently for my BBQ meat over rice for years and typically they have delivered - today I am no longer a loyal customer. My boyfriend ordered the usual and I like to watch the butcher chop the meats from the window. I saw the butcher grab a piece of roast pork (char siu) from the metal bin and a large piece fell off onto the floor right near his feet and looked down at it. He proceeded to cut the piece that didn't fall, and another butcher behind him picked it up the roast pork that was on the floor and put it on the counter immediately to the left of the other butcher. The butcher that was cutting the meat grabbed that piece KNOWING that it had fallen on the floor and proceeded to cut that same floor meat on the cutting board and add these pieces to our order. I stared them down and was baffled at what just happened in front of my face. They put the rest of the piece back in the metal bin by the window touching all of the other pieces. I immediately told my boyfriend and he confronted the cashier, who defensively said that it didn't fall on the floor -meanwhile she didn't even see it happen! All of the other employees said it didn't happen including 1 of the 3 butchers. The other two were silent. They replaced one of the containers after they were gaslighting us saying that it didn't happen. The woman cashier wanted to only replace the roast pork, but thankfully the butcher replaced the entire container. Why would we only accept the roast pork replaced - meanwhile the other meat and the rice + veggies touched the floor meat??? Think about how dirty and disgusting those floors get. They didnt even throw out the piece of meat!! It was still on top of the pile of char siu after we left. Im incredibly disgusted that these employees value a few bucks over the sanitation + health of the customers. I will never be returning to either if their establishments. You have been warned - if you go to Corner 28/Roast 28 - your meat might've fallen on the floor & at least know that the cutting board that your meat was cut on has their nasty floor shit on it. read more

My hubby and I are roasty lovers. We've tried many places from LA to SF and finally we made it to NY. This is the best so far with their thin crispy skin roasted pork. I can still taste the scallion chicken and it's dipping sauce every time I think about it...yum... Gosh, I bet my little brother would fly here from CA very often to have the tender juicy BBQ pork (his most favorite Chinese dish) if he were alive. I wish the place a bit bigger to sit more people. This place was recommended by a friend to my roommate and I, so one rainy afternoon we decided to walk over from our apartment, hungry and in search of the delicious Chinese BBQ that was promised. Upon arrival my roommate and I were treated with the usual racism that is customary in establishments like these all across NYC. It is well understood that all patrons are required to wear a mask because of Covid 19, which we were already wearing, and that only one person is allowed in at a time. The lady taking our orders made sure to emphasize these procedures to us. However while my roommate and I were still in the restaurant more patrons were allowed to enter right behind us without a sideways glance. My personal issues with the casual racism that is usually explained away by blaming ethnic custom and tradition aside, when I ordered a lb of the roast duck I was told that the current price was different from the one clearly posted, as well as when I was ready to pay with my card I notice that the cash only sign for the business, that I had been looking for on the outside of the restaurant, as well as every step along the way, singly located in inch high lettering on the cash register inside of the restaurant after I had already ordered food that I was not ready to pay for with cash. Subsequently I ended up canceling one of my items and borrowing some cash from my roommate in order to pay. This I later found out was actually for the best. The food sucks. I ended up throwing out the five spice duck and honey duck over noodle that I ordered. The Roast Pork isn't too bad and with a trip into the oven when I'm hungry again maybe it'll be better than it was when I received it. As someone who has worked in the restaurant industry for the past ten years it always amazes me that businesses like this continue to exist as well as continue to employ people who lack the customer service skill required for successful business, when they refuse to grow and look for ways to expand their clientele. It's a shitty time in our world, and I could have easily gone to another restaurant along 8th avenue, and been treated with more courtesy, because I willingly choose to support the businesses in my neighborhood who are struggling in the wake of this pandemic.
