I've heard this is where they filmed "Some Like It Hot" with Marilyn Monroe, and have always wanted to see it...so this was my prime destination on our trip to San Diego... Unfortunately, the weather wasn't optimal. In early May, it can get cool and windy...and although we went to the Coronado Beach twice during our trip, both days were too cold to go in the water...a huge bummer for my husband, The Water Baby". The beach itself is nice, with some serious surfer waves as anticipated...but the sand isn't as white, and it's not as pristine as I had expected it to be. Like the Key Siesta Beach in Sarasota. There were quite a bit of seaweed on the Coronado Beach...something I don't recall seeing much of in Sarasota beaches. Truly, thing that's so magical about this beach is the famous Coronado Hotel with its stunning, red roofs. Throughout Coronado Island, you'll see these red roofs too. We even regretted getting the lounge chair and umbrella (quite expensive for one of the 2 days on Coronado Beach...since it was just too windy to really relax and nap. We did enjoy walking the long beach strip (VERY soft sand, so very easy to walk!), as well as their manicured beach walks (with great sitting areas)...and of course, hanging around the famous hotel areas. The island itself is beautiful...and it reminded me of the Sarasota scene, except bigger. Plenty of swanky shops and restaurants too. We tried The Henry and Bluewater Boathouse Grill...and both were EXCELLENT. I didn't go shopping, but it's on my list for my next go-around. We also enjoyed ubering across this big, blue bridge to the island...so high up, it almost felt like we were riding on a lift. We both loved this island so much, we talked about the possibility of doing another trip, spending the whole time here. So...even despite the weather, it was definitely worth visiting Coronado Island. In fact, a huge bonus of coming during off season is not having to fight through the crowds. Also, we had no problem getting the best lounge areas on the beach, or getting good seats in restaurants without reservations. I'm betting that it gets quite crowded during peak season. We're hoping to shoot for coming here during off season...yet a warmer month?

I love Coronado Island. It feels like an oasis outside the city with beautiful beaches, lovely ocean breezes, and delicious food. Little Frenchie's is one of my favorite places on the island as well as Moo Time. The Coronado Playhouse has excellent, free productions. Silver Strand State Beach is one of my go-to places as well. Taking long walks and looking for sand dollars is an enjoyable experience. The sand there almost looks like it has gold flakes mixed in; I think they should have named it 'golden strand' instead. I highly recommend an outing to Coronado!

I have visited Coronado Island many times throughout my life. It is very touristy and crowded at times, but I still enjoy it. I still today have never stayed at the Del, but I have spent a lot of time at it. I still remember when driving over the Coronado bridge required a toll. I still love the view of Downtown San Diego from across the Bay at the Ferry Landing. It always makes for a good photo. Coronado Island is a resort city on a peninsula in San Diego Bay. The only way to get to the island is to drive over on the Coronado Bridge or by ferry. There is only one main road that goes from one end of the island to the other. The grand Victorian Hotel del Coronado built in 1888 and is the main attraction of Coronado. Many celebrities and presidents have stayed there over the years. The beaches are nice, but finding parking can be a real pain during peak seasons. One of my favorite things to do is to ride the bike path around the island. You can rent them at Coronado Ferry Landing. They also rent paddle boats and kayaks. There are a number places to shop and eat on Coronado Island.

It's so pretty and clean. This an idea place to retire and live the beach lifestyle. It's just pricey and the bridge getting there gets stuffy.

Cute island in SD. Absolutely love this charming getaway. There's a lot of fun restaurants and bars along the main strip. There's also the iconic Hotel del Coronado to visit or stay as well. The beach is very lively and picturesque. Definitely worth a visit if you're nearby!

I've never been to this part of Coronado and absolutely loved it! As soon as we crossed the Coronado Bridge, we turned right into a park where there were lots of free parking on a paved lot. It was a beautiful day, so we took a nice stroll along the waterfront, then rented a double bike to tour the area. The view was spectacular and we couldn't have wished for a more beautiful day! It's so clean here!

Coronado island is always fun! We took the ferry and had a blast. Last time we also did a small boat ride around. the Family size cycling is always one of my favorite moments around the island. What a great way to explore it and earning your lunch :P Beautiful views and homes around and lovely places to eat. Love it. This year we also got to experience the beach side and it was truly lovely. Very family friendly too!

When you travel the sidewalks is to keep to the sidewalks the traffic moves very quick is cross at the curbs and crossing lights.

When you travel what is the first thing that you may see when you come to a new city and the many places that are along the main street? That is one thing that you may want to think about there are so many things which can be found right in front of you yet so many people see at as a restaurant and many others come and have drinks not knowing they have come to a location that has been there since the early 1930 to 1970s. When I had taken the day out and traveled over to the Island City of Coronado it was one city that gave me a chance to see Indepth the way people lived, and the many restaurants and stores showed their spirit of the city and the customer service they provide. Walking over from the Hotel Del Coronado gave me a chance to see the many small locations there a few locations which are many that have been on the strip of Orange Avenue the local Coffee Shop yet there was more of a cocktail type of coffee shop. There were a few places that had the looks of the many restaurants with the many doctors and the Plastic surgeons makes the Island to look more like La Jolla downtown area of the many restaurants and the heavy Influx of the need to change the look into more of the beauty doctors and the plastic surgeons. The many locations that are located on Orange Avenue of the restaurants and the high-end restaurants are some of the ones which are only seen to be operating after the sun goes down with the many police that operate amongst the many areas. One of the largest that I have noticed has been the park with the lawn work of the best not to see to many park benches and the picnic tables to have such a large park with the city Library which is nearby is one you can go to and be able to get over to the lunch row. There are many places which can be brought more up to theater area can be some of the eateries and the coffee shops that can offer the best food at the lowest prices many people do look for the places that have great food at the lowest prices. One thing that I had noticed is the Village dock where the Ferry Docks from the docks at the San Diego harbor brings many visitors to the Island yet when you see the food prices its the priciest on Orange Avenue. I see the many students that are on the Island there is not much of the 711 stores or the Burger Kings one is located at the Village when you walk about the main strips you find the many stores which students like nowhere to be found on the Island. With one pizza place that is more of a high-end restaurant is to have one that you can buy slices on the strip it gives a better look for the students with the many stores. With the large Naval Base that is located at the Coronado Island to see services located on the strip with restaurants that offer food to the Military to see stores which give the Island its past history the military and the coming of the Movie Top Gun. As a Yelp Elite Reviewer, the many times I have come to the Island there has been the loss of the stores that offer to the military and the servicemembers who live on the Island. Yes the Island has so many things there has been more to the rich population and the many that have large yachts and big boats that you see docked at the Glorietta Bay . As a Yelp Elite there are many good things of Coronado Island the many areas, I have looked over there have been lost history and the many things the Island has done during the war and the history.

Coronado Island is great!! Orange Avenue is the Main Street that runs through the island, and it has a lot of Hotels, restaurants and various other places of business. There is a large military presence here also. The Coronado Beach is one of the nicest beaches I've been to. The Main Street is bustling during the day, plenty of people park and walk. At night, the whole island just chills out, so if you want nightlife, head over to San Diego. I enjoyed myself here!!

Nice afternoon walk! We were staying in SD for one more more night and still had our car, so we drove across the bridge to take a nice afternoon walk on the beach and around town. Great place to spend an afternoon - free parking, plenty of nice sand and the weather is always good! Of course, now I think I need a condo on the beach, but I'm pretty sure that ain't happening. Yes, it can be a little touristy, but the sights and sun make up for that. read more

Gorgeous little Island community that is fun to take out of town friends to when they first touch down in San Diego. Right by the airport, just cut through downtown San Diego and head over the famous Coronado Bay Bridge and you're there. The island isn't too big so it's easy to navigate. The south-east section of the island has great shopping, galleries, and restaurants to dine in. The north-west end of the island is the gorgeous beach that is rarely crowded, even in summer time. read more

Here you can find nice restaurants, beachs and a beautiful view over down town San Diego! This is the place to go if you want to get away from the rush of the big city! Coronado beach is the place to go to when you want something diffrent from Mission beach or bay! The beach is located through the nice neighbourhoods of Cornado, there you will find a large beach surrounded by palm trees! If you like me enjoy to stroll at the beach be sure to walk by the historical Hotel Coronado, an old and beautiful hotel that adds to the calm atmosphere! But mostly make sure you enjoy the beach, the water and the sunshine! read more

So pretty and near downtown san diego just cross the bridge and you're on an accessible island, so little beach town looking I love it. It's like a mini vacy 5 mins away from the city. Definitely and sd must visit! read more

Beautiful day to visit the beach. Crowd was light and the ocean water was a good temp. Hubby and I had a blanket and plenty of water, as it was a warm day. Wish I would have brought a umbrella has many others had the set up. Overall a good experience. Beautiful sandy beaches. Saw many couples walking and others just relaxing. Didn't get an opportunity to explore but looks like a great area to walk, sightsee and eat downtown. read more

I adore this place I immediately fell in love ! My family and I biked around the little island and had a snack at one of their cute restaurants. Wonderful scenery ! Plus you have the option to get there and leave by ferry , which is surprisingly super cheap ! I enjoyed it so much I had to buy Coronado souvenirs ! Hooray for random wonderful findings ! read more

We LOVE Coronado, CA. Seems safe, minimal graffitti, no homeless in view, however, we were set upon for a "grab and go" at the bus stop on Orange and Adella @ app 20:00 hrs on 9/23. After taking the bay shuttle in from San Diego, we settled in @ the bus stop at Adella & Orange for a ride back to our hotel. Our attention was immediately drawn to two teen males who approached the bus stop and just hung around with no apparent purpose. One just mused around the sign and ultimately, one sat down on the concrete bench to the left, right & close for comfort to my Wife who was holding onto her back pack. OK, now the LEO kicks in; that 6th sense not of any evidendtiary value in court, We are both coppers with a total of over 50 yrs on the job and see what is going down. Neither one of us are carrying but we didn't have to communicate to each other. I'm 6-1 and about 275#, bald with tattoos (U/C) and immediately stood up in front of my Wife in a defensive stance. My Wife wrapped the strap of her bag more firmly around her hand, The "orbiting" male took off running into a dark parking lot off Adella, behind a building.. The seated youth hopped up and bolted, at a quick walk towards the lot, looking over his right shoulder all of the until he had a distance, then flashed a two fingered peace sign at me with his right hand and took off running into the same parking lot. We sat back down, shaking, somewhat unnerved as all PO's get after a close encounter, and mused on whether to tell the other folks at the stop to beware. We opted out as to not appear "racist" as the 2 perps were black, male teen "yoots," one with an obvious Abe Lincoln style Afro and an orange shirt. We also thought about calling the PD, but the incident was over, there was no crime committed and given the time frame, response time, the perps were long gone. We're sure you know who the are. I'm sure we would've been labeled as racists, also!!!!!!!!!!!!1 We've travelled armed before in CA and it is a pain in the ass choosing the right load and the number of rounds to carry, so we did not; we rely on training, experience and skill. Thankfully we didn't have a shooting incident, but "What if?" Crucified on the 11:00 O'Clock News! Ironically, a few days later, we took the same shuttle into town from our hotel. The driver asked if we had been here before. We responded in the affirmative. Her reply was "Okay, please be careful!" Something tourists should know, here? read more

After a week of pretty fun times around San Diego, decided to have a tour of Coronado Island and specifically Hotel Del Coronado. The big disappointment turned out to be tons of construction around the hotel making driving to it a serious challenge on a Monday afternoon. Not to mention the laughable cost of parking. Aside from that, the entire island is jammed with bumper to bumper traffic. Not enjoyable at all. I recommend against it as in my opinion it's not worth the effort of driving across the bridge, sitting in traffic the entire way both on and off the island. To me, it just wasn't worth it. This place is great! They have lots of restaurants to choose from even though they are all great! They have lots of little shops. And the best part is the beach, on the beach they have fire places that are everywhere and you don't have to pay for it either I would suggest you bring lawn chairs or towels, s'mores or something to roast. The Beach is very clean overall and great place to take kids! read more

This is as close as I can get to an island these days. The beach sand is still one of the finest I find among so many places I have visited. It was fun just walking down the edge of the water and watch the sun set. The streets just have this small town feel. It's restful, harmonious, and quite a lovely place to bring a date. read more

Definitely worth a stop if visiting San Diego. We took the ferry for around $5 each and hung out around the landing for a while shopping around. Ended up renting some electric bikes for about $25 each for 2 hours, definitely one of the highlights of our trip! The beach walk just about goes around the whole island and is perfect for bikes, roller blades or anything else that rolls. Stopping through Hotel Del was cool and the beach was pretty great, I actually like seeing all the jets flying around. There is a free shuttle that goes back and forth from the ferry landing to hotel del, hours might be seasonal though, not sure. We didn't spend much time in town, plenty of restaurants and shops though. Overall an interesting place and really good for a day trip. read more

I'd like to say that this Island is an extension from San Diego. Local flavor? I think you will find that at the Coronado Ferry Landing with great views of Downtown SD, the bay and the Coronado Bridge. This village provides some places to eat, as well as relaxing on the grass to relish the atmosphere. Walks on the beach and for a historical visit check out Hotel del Coronado. The hotel is worth a quick visit, if you can avoid paying their parking fee. Most off all the beaches behind Hotel del Coronado and the boardwalk of hotels, the sandy beaches are gold/bronze amazing! If you want to extend your vacation for at least several hours, this place is it! to go out somewhere. read more

I'm a fan of any place I can walk around outside and soak up sunshine. I've been here a few times with my wife and it's like a mini-getaway. The beach is really nice; we've stayed at Loews Coronado across from the beach and it's a good spot to bring out of town visitors. I wouldn't go running here; it's too packed with tourists. But I'd run on Coronado Beach. The downside to visiting is that traffic in town can be pretty bad, especially getting in/out of the island. But it's a really nice place to visit. read more

If you just want to get away from the city.. this is a nice spot to venture out to. You can visit Hotel Del Coronado & lay on the beach. If you want to go on a cute date, you can go to the ferry landing on the other side & see the skyline of downtown SD! There's also coronado brewing for some beer & a bite to eat. Just be aware of traffic because it is the island & going in & out of it means you have to go on the bridge. So once traffic is backed up, it can get bad. Overall a nice island to visit, especially if you have friends visiting SD. read more

My dog had a great time when I brought her here. I also loved the ice cream they sold here since it's so hard to find. It's the perfect place for a picnic since you have nice weather and a lovely view. read more

Coronado is my favorite! It makes me happy to be a Californian. Where else can you hop on a beach cruiser and just ride for miles, along the beach, through parks, and stop for some darn tasty eats. It also has the best beaches and the most beautiful homes. It's so peaceful and relaxing, I always feel like I'm on vacation when I'm there. Back in the days, my whole family would meet up for the 4th of July parade and then make a day of being at the beach, it was the best! When I hit the lotto, one of my homes will definitely be in Coronado. read more

Such great memories. During a recent family vacation, we had a chance to go back to a place that is near and dear to my heart. During my Navy years I had the opportunity to visit this place often. The island is even more beautiful now, though, because I am retired. I now have a chance to smell the flowers and take in the scenery as a tourist of the island. This island never gets old. We look forward to visiting this area of San Diego every time we go on vacation to San Diego. read more

Coronado Island is a great touristy place to spend the day. You can rent a bike to get around, walk, whatever makes you happy. There's a dog beach, a people beach, sand sculptures, cool stuff to see, and lots of fun to be had. Eat, drink, swim, sight see and be merry. You can arrive via car, shuttle, bus, ferry, or however you like. The ferry ride is super fun, and relatively cheap. Prices are what you'd expect for a tourist destination, so be prepared for that. read more

Beautiful area on Coronado. Beaches are the best I've encountered in the US. Lots of little shops, local restaurants, and water all around. There are a few military bases around as well. So lots of jets and helicopters but it's still really nice! read more

Love, love, love me some Coronado Island. First day of school for San Diego Unified school district and boy was it the perfect day to visit the island. Had a wonderful time walking the beach and perusing The Hotel Del. It was wonderful to walk around the streets with no fuss and no muss! read more

Going to San Diego for the first time I actually had no idea this little island existed. Seperate from much of the hustle/bustle and accessed by the fantastic Coronado Bridge across SD Harbor it was a very pleasant place to see the Sunset on my one evening in San Diego. Sure it is a tad touristy (pirate fingernail clippers!) but overall it is a great experience - feels like a small beach in Florida, in a way. read more

What a beautiful island! Gorgeous beaches, neat helicopters and planes flying nearby, servicemen and women all over, gorgeous weather, good restaurants and decent shopping all make for a wonderful place to visit. Downsides are costs are very high, traffic is very slow, parking is hard to find and like most of California, the water is insanely cold. read more

A fun island with the beautiful and historic Hotel del Coronado. A lovely beach. Busy with lots of cars and traffic, but the plus is no tolls to get over there. Should definitely visit Hotel del Coronado while visiting SD. read more

A quaint town, but definitely is not the BEST island in the US. Coming from Orange County, Newport Beach in particular, the scenery, the beach, the people watching, the shopping, the houses here are nothing impressive. It is definitely one of the better or prettier beach town in San Diego, just because most of the rest of the beach towns in SD are nothing to brag about at all (think 16 years old youngsters that are shirtless whom also appear to be high from smoking dope hanging around the beach all day). read more

What a beautiiful, laid back stretch of beach with the "Del" hotel looming large behind. It's like stepping back in time to a simpler era with antique cars and scooters for getting around the island. The perfect way to really Chill out in San Diego. read more

Another beautiful place to visit while in San Diego. Loved the beach, its Clean and family oriented from what I saw. The downtown area has much to offer, grab a coffee and/or lunch, stroll the shops (not my thing, but my wife and girls loved it). Simply stop and take it all in. read more

Some friends recommended we check out the island on a trip down to SD, and it was beautiful! Unfortunately we didn't stay on the island, but it's definitely the plan for next time. The Hotel Del is gorgeous, and there are benches facing an incredible view of the ocean. Street parking is dirt cheap (especially compared to Seattle). Also, if you check out the ferry landing at night there are a lot of people fishing.. way cool! read more

July would be the worst month to stay in my opinion! Little Italy has a massive plaza with bistro-style tables and chairs open to the public. I couldn't help but notice the fact that I felt transported to Italy! Several restaurant owners had an Italian accent or spoke Italian. Additionally, the aroma of pizzerias and pubs were quite enticing. If you're into sports, there's several locations with screens for watching live events. My only issue with Little Italy is the lack of parking. Everywhere you go, street parking and paid parking is FULL. You'll be lucky to find a spot during the summer season. I found a spot after half an hour of circling the vicinity like a San Diego shark. The city needs to create more underground lots or more street parking.

Given the right conditions, you can see a distinct green spot above the sun's upper limb, that usually only lasts for no longer than two seconds. It is even more rare, the green flash can resemble a green ray shooting up from the sunset or sunrise point. This sculpture is the work of Malcolm Jones and is dedicated to that phenomenon, but it in no way aids you of viewing. You will find it on the Mission Beach boardwalk. The piece is made of a solid cast acrylic archway that is supported by two concrete pillars. There is also a bronze plaque describing the green flash phenomenon located on the sculpture and another title plaque. It was made in 2002 and is in fair shape, especially considering its age. Some has put stickers on it and the plaques are show signs of corrosion. It is unique and I actually learned something new in the process. It definitely sticks out. I have come to the terms that I will probably not ever see a green flash. It takes masterful planning, precise timing, and patience. I have 2 of the 3 (you can figure out which one I am missing). Parking here is simple. There is a free parking lot right by it. You can park, get out and talk a closer look. Well, as with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. The beach, a park, and an amusement park are in walking distance if you are looking for ideas.

It is located right across the street from 1083 Sunset Cliff Blvd. You can't miss it. Me and my assistant were able to find it in the dark. It is the one covered in bird crap. You cannot mistake it. There is a lot of places to park and get a good look. I would suggest getting there well before sunset because the parking fills up with all the sunset gazers. The rock had quite a few birds on it and is known as a surf break that produces 3 different waves. I do not know what attracts the birds to that specific rock. Some tried to explain it to me, but it was way over my head. I know that it is not much, but it is the little things that matter. It is not a long stop, but definitely worth a visit. A visit here should probably be paired with a visit to Sunset Cliff Park and a sunset viewing. I am really glad that I was able to make it here.

Sunset Cliffs is nice to take in the Pacific Ocean and then you see this big rock with a tone of bird poop and you can't help but stare at the eyesore.

Very cool place to go and hangout. This is one of those spots where I used to take all of the girls. It sounds corny but chicks dig this kind of environment. The beach is nice and you can see the planes come flying in, it's a very soothing environment. I used to come here a lot when I was younger just to blow off some steam and chill out. It's the kind of place you can just get lost in, tune out everyone and jam to your ipod sitting right on the beach. If you've got kids it's also a great family environment. This place is more upper class then your typical beach areas so your not going to be dealing with any transients and what not. read more

Coronado Beach remains a favorite spot, particularly for its beautifully smooth, cool sand, which is wonderfully free of rocks and pebbles (and only minimal, normal seaweed). The surrounding area is fantastic, now boasting an even wider selection of restaurants, shops, and ice cream spots, making it super convenient for lunch. While this variety is welcome, be aware that, as a tourist hub, the food quality can sometimes be hit or miss. A slight bummer was realizing the lovely piano that once sat across from the Hotel del Coronado is no longer there. Despite that small change, we still thoroughly enjoy our visits to Coronado Beach. read more

Coronado Island is such a great spot to check out! There's a lot to see and walk around, and we decided to stroll across the island. It only took about 30 minutes, which was the perfect amount of time to take in the views and vibe. We also took the ferry across to the other side. There are plenty of shops and places to grab a bite, and the scenery is beautiful--definitely a relaxing place to spend some time. Whether you're walking along the beach or just exploring, it's a great way to spend a few hours. Totally recommend it if you're in the area! read more
