By the time I got there it was nearly closing and the only sandwich available was their ham & cheese on a fresh baked roll. The roll was very similar to Torta bread or Banh mi bread. The cheese was a semi soft that was creamy and salty and went well with the ham. Very simple meat, cheese & bread yet still very tasty. Also picked up a pan de nato and a small sweet bread. Came to Turlock for the Portuguese Festa, they had no baked goods this year. This was the only 1 of 3 Portuguese bakeries open on the weekend. No traditional Portuguese pastries. Got a loaf of sweet bread and pimento hot sauce, or as I call it the yum sauce! Tried 2 leftover pastries as about to close. Did not seem traditional to me. Being Portuguese I can tell you that their rolls and sweet bread are always delicious. They have a decent selection of other items but you need to put an order in over the phone cause they run out quick. If you go there and they don't have any bread don't be upset they sell out quick. read more

GEM!!!! The word gem can be overused and I know this now to be oh so true now thanks to the case of the Corvelos Portuguese Bakery because this place is a true GEM! I will not use the word so easily the next time! This bakery sets my standard for the word GEM! My brother and I decided to go to Subway yesterday and brave their toxic bread haha but going there turned out to be the reason we decided to check out Corvelos Bakery which is next door. My brother was having a nice chat with Jeanette one of the store owners as I entered. My very picky brother decided to buy a lemon filled "Canoli" type pastry and an Especie cookie which is really pretty to look at. My brother said the lemon "Canoli" was really good. I bought two Especie cookies. I ate my Especie cookie later that day and found it to be so delicious that I ate the one that was destined for my BF haha! I just couldn't resist! It was that good!!!! The Especie cookie is shaped like a lucky horseshoe. It is two toned tan and brown. According to Jeanette they are very laborious to make. The cookie is made up of two kinds of dough. One dough is filled into the other but it shows since there are cuts in the outside dough. The Especie cookies are specially made for the bakery by a very talented Portuguese woman. I believe she is from mainland Portugal. While these two items are truly superb, the bakery is known for its fabulous sweet breads. They are similar to the Hawaiian variety but they differ in taste. They are sweeter. The Hawaiian type we all know is actually a knock off from the Portuguese type. The next day I came I saw a lady take about six big sweet breads with her. They are that good!!!! The bakery takes orders for Portuguese Easter Bread which I have never seen or tried but it is very traditional. It has an egg in its center. I wish I could have seen and tried one. Jeanette told me that when Easter time comes people have to line up for their Easter bread! Be sure to order yours! On this second visit to the bakery I ordered an espresso with some Especie cookies and a Linguica sandwich. The Linguica sandwich was pretty big and only cost me $4.50!!!! It was really, really good too!!!! I have had Linguica before at Top Dog and this Linguica here at the bakery was quite a bit better. Together the 4 cookies, espresso and sandwich cost less than $10! Wow! Inside the bakery is really cute! Nice eye candy! It has really nice Portuguese themed decor. On the right hand you can see that the Azores Islands which belong to Portugal are painted on the wall. I particularly would like to visit San Miguel Island (guess why?) - which also is the most modern! I never would have imagined that Turlock of all places would have a sizable enough population for such a bakery to exist. The second day I came I overheard Portuguese spoken by some customers who were having a great time. Great place for my BF to brush up on his Portuguese! There are a couple tables in this medium sized establishment. There's also a freezer and fridge with some great Portuguese sausages and cheeses and other food items. I even saw some Brazilian sodas! Corvelos Portuguese Bakery is in a large mall so parking is no problem. It's easy to get to as well as it is pretty much right off the 99 Fwy. They open at 7:30 am which was great for me since I wanted to return to Los Angeles early the second day I came. Let me tell you that I had a really, really pleasant chat with Jeanette about the Islands and other things. She is humble, funny and downright welcoming! In my life I have been to few establishments with this unique and memorable local flavor! Even the clients are really nice! I got a couple smiles! This is the kind of family run establishment (Jeanette's kids even come in to lend a hand) that should succeed because of its human warmth and the quality of its food! When my friend and I entered the bakery, the person working the front was engrossed in helping a customer. She didn't greet us, much less even acknowledge our existence. So we wandered around the store. Both of us were hoping they served a full lunch here, but all I could find were a couple of sandwiches posted on the whiteboard. I saw linguica in the fridge. That was tempting, but I didn't need 5 or 6 links at once. The breads looked really tempting, but I am more of a sourdough person than a sweet bread person. Then we made our way to the pastry counter. Some items were neatly presented, but others looked a little haphazard. So many different things I want to try! It wasn't until that customer's transaction (and indecision made this process glacially slow) was completed that she finally turned her attention to us. I had an apple turnover.
