I have been shopping here for many years ... since they opened in Montecito. Usually the service is good and associates are attentive, but once in a while I feel service is under par. Today I went in and was being assisted and in the middle of a lipstick consultation, when the associate left me saying she had to assist another customer who had just walked in. I went into CosBar to inquire about makeup application services for my mom and mother in law. I'm having my wedding in Santa Barbara next fall, and the makeup artist that I selected for my friends and I isn't the right style for the moms. When I approached the sales associate and kindly asked whether those services are available, she faked choked and laughed in my face before she blurted out the price, as if it was going to be out of budget. It was awful. It was as if we were in the movie pretty woman. I've never encountered such appalling behavior before. For what it's worth, the prices were actually way more reasonable than any makeup artist I had looked into, but I would never subject my family to such rude behavior. read more

The store is beautiful and has all of the best products. I went in last minute needing makeup for a wedding and Anahit could not have been more helpful and kind. She had exactly what I needed and even made a great suggestion for a product better than what I came looking for. She was very knowledgeable and went even further to give me a complimentary gift bag with an array of lovely products to try. Marcella is wonderful. She does the best natural looking makeup for events or photos. As for product, she is an expert and has always guided me to the best products within my budget range. CosBar is still heaven to me. It's the only place where I'm actually friends with everyone there because they're so personable. The quality of their merchandise is still the best and it's a much more relaxed atmosphere, which is always good. I have found my favorite skin care in this store thanks to the recommendation of the ladies here. To the only non 5 star review here, I feel like there was definitely a miscommunication here. EVERYWHERE you go whether it's Nordstrom, Saks, Neimans, or Macys, there is a 3 item purchase with an appointment and lashes are never included. Why? Because this is how you're paying for the time and service. It's a 3 item minimum purchase for everyone so if you want to add lashes to your purchase, that's fine. Just keep in mind that's in addition to your 3 items because it's definitely extra work that requires fitting them, cutting them, gluing them on and then making sure they're comfortable and if it's not, they have to keep trying until it is. Make up artists are artists and this service isn't free and it shouldn't be free. They put in a lot of work and time to ensure that you'll look beautiful when you walk out the door and it comes with a price of a 3 item minimum purchase so buck up and buy the lipstick, the eyeliner, and whatever else you really liked. At least this way you get to actually get something out of it. If you hire someone to come to you, you pay them and that's it!! read more

The only thing Cos Bar Montecito provides that you cannot get at other stores- e.g., Sephora or Nordstroms- is terrible customer service, hostile interactions with managers, and hassles with your returns. First and foremost, Anahit is the most unprofessional sales person I've ever encountered. She started helping me match my color to foundation, but in the middle of our consultation she left me to help two more customers (older, white women) that had walked in. THIRTY MINUTES later, she returned to help me AFTER she had made an expensive sale with the clearly affluent women. I felt pressured into buying foundation that was too heavy and other products I didn't really need but I did because of Anahit's incessant commission-driven mindset. A day later, after realizing I wasn't happy with my purchase, I tried to return them only for Anahit to refuse to refund my money without a "manager present." I was told I had to come back in two hours (!) when the manager was back from lunch. I felt so intimidated that I had to have a friend come with me for support (which is utterly ridiculous). The "manager," Marcella, and Anahit both behaved like bullies (laughing at me and I felt ganged up on). They refused to refund the few products (all under $100) and I left there shaking with disbelief over these grown women's behavior. Luckily, a few weeks later I went to Cos Bar in Brentwood and got to return the product without any aggressive behavior from their manager, thankfully. Cos Bar in Montecito needs to go. They have never supported the community during the mudslides, fires, or even participate in Halloween! This place only caters to those they think will increase their commissions. Luxury products can be bought anywhere, no need to go through this harassment! read more

I am an out of town client who has been a seasonal, loyal customer for as long as they have been open in Montecito. I was disappointed today by the saleswoman's response when I asked to simply have some eye makeup palette colors applied casually- not for an event- so I could see the colors and how to use them. I was told that she did not do makeup application, that people take advantage, you have to make an appointment and pay for makeup application ($200). While I understand that a formal makeup application is of course a justified fee for the artist's time and skill, a quick demo application seems very reasonable for a high end make up product (Neiman's, Sephora, etc all offer). I understand unfortunately people take advantage of the makeup artists, their time and skills and sometimes don't purchase any product. I asked for a simple demo and was told "yes, we can just press some color on you." At this point, I was disenchanted with the whole process. Makeup shopping should be fun, inspirational, educational on some level of new product and application. These are high end products. I was offered lots of samples, very kind and appreciated, but I think my disappointment in the lack of service and enthusiasm for the experience was evident. I used to go in to feel good, to spoil myself, be pampered and splurge on products. I left with the basic things I came in for, I would have loved to have purchase some fun new products for my daughter and I. It was really a disappointing experience. This past weekend, my fiancé and I, went to Cos Bar of Montecito, to originally just look at their selection of fragrances. We really did not have any specific brands that we were interested in purchasing. However, after seeing the incredible selection of both men and women fragrances, we immediately decided, that we were not going to leave empty handed. We were immediately greeted upon our arrival and made to feel welcomed, by the entire staff of Cos Bar of Montecito! However, on this particular visit, we were fortunate to be assisted by sales representative, Debora Kraushaar. She greeted us with a huge smile and "hello." Debora was absolutely welcoming, polite, knowledgeable, and really made us feel like family. She was able to answer all our questions and was extremely generous with her time in helping us; especially considering, there were several other customers that she was also busy helping. Debora has an extremely generous spirit! She treated us more like family, than customers! The ambiance of Cos Bar is absolutely luxurious, and the staff obviously embrace their job(s), with an infectious passion! The staff was extremely attentive and knowledgeable, and wonderfully polite. I've been to several department stores and boutiques shopping for fragrances, but I've never experienced the quality of service, nor the sheer selection, of quality products, that were on display. In closing, for those in the market for a new fragrance, or beauty product, especially, very difficult brands to acquire; or if you're just looking to replace your current fragrance, or beauty product(s), you definitely have to take a step inside Cos Bar of Montecito and look around. This place really does have a huge range of hard to find and cult-status brands and items. They've gotten a little bit of competition from the more recently opened SPACE NK in the Von's Shopping center up the road, but they still have some exclusives. And they have shipped stuff to me that they don't have in stock from another one of their stores fast and free. SPACE NK doesn't really do that, so they have the edge there. Some of the staff here are top notch. They recognize me when I come in, are extremely friendly and they know their products. Others are hit and miss.....While most are pretty laid back and helpful, a couple of others are super hard sell and it's annoying and unprofessional. And they can be clueless about the lines they sell and their own products. For example, I went in to stock up on some of my favorite products and was told that one of them had been, sadly, discontinued. Of course, it's always the most favorite product, right? I was so disappointed and left with my other items. Turns out, the item wasn't being discontinued at all. And after a little research on my part, I came back in the following week and bought two of that item. Plenty had been in stock in the drawer the whole time! It bears noting that the sales person had never looked for the item, just told me it wasn't available any longer. I suppose mistakes happen, but part of the lure to go into these higher end cosmetics boutiques is that everyone working there will know their stuff. Bottom line: By all means, check this place out. Especially if you're looking for hard to find brands like Cle de Peau or By Terry or Claudio Riaz. read more

The staff is truly fabulous. I shop here a few times a year and always get the best tips and tricks from the women on staff. Today I needed to replace my daily eyeliner and had both women offering their ideas on my best options. Once I made my selection, the woman who rang my sale offered me a few ways to use the smudge tip. So nice! Additionally she shared a great idea for the face oil sample I requested. The one time I needed to make a return, they were gracious and my account was easily credited and saved on file for use during my next visit. Superb shopping experience. Thank you! read more

I had a great experience when walking into Cos Bar to ask a question. Elizabeth Ann helped me right away. She let me experience the products (by putting them on me to get a feel for what she recommended) and made sure that I did not walk out of the store with an incomplete look (aka half my face being done up like many cosmetic store do. She worked with me in my price range and I love the results of the Dior face moisturizer that she recommended. I will definitely be heading back. read more

This could have been a better review, but in the end, I am frustrated. We were there for a private party for our wedding party and guests and the terms were changed on me. They first said it was a 1 item purchase, then a few days before, it turned into 3. I felt this was poorly communicated, and this was for our wedding. Its never about the $ in my opinion , but the principle. As the bride I was so upset I had to ask someone else to call the salon to negotiate it down to 2 items for my guests...which was agreed. But the day of the wedding, they were still forced to buy 3 items, not all my guests, but some. I was so embarrassed because I had promoted it alike a wonderful experience to just have to get 1 item. I am sure they would all buy a ton as it was, but to be forced was crazy. Sadly, we had to all do our makeup over because only 3 of the 5 girls actually liked their makeup, or maybe it was the forceful sale :( Point of the story, be up front on what your terms are, and stick to it. Communicate with the staff, and hire artists with more experience. I liked them for allowing our charity voucher to be used for our wedding, but even though its been months after the wedding, the end result is a negative experience that could have been avoided. read more

Just visited this store with my mother while taking a walk down the street here and was impressed with the high end makeup but was so upset and disgusted really with the women working there who never so much and greeted us while we were in the store for a few minutes and just fyi we were the ONLY two people in the store. I'm a big fan of customer service and just general politeness and got not so much as a smile in this store. It did not make me want to buy from them. read more

Cos Bar ! What an amazing place to shop. I went to Cos Bar today to get my makeup done for a Christmas party ,and it was a wonderful experience. The makeup artist Sybil was so amazing very friendly and patient with me. My makeup looked amazing . For now on I will be shopping only there for my cosmetics. It's so nice , clean and private. This is a cosmetic bar. Great brands and knowledgeable people selling the products. A much more enjoyable experience than going to the mall. Sybyl helped me find an excellent replacement for a product that I had been using which is no longer made....in addition to introducing me to a product line that I was unfamiliar with. She made appropriate suggestions - I bought a few additional items that I hadn't intended to purchase. She knew the products well and wasn't pushy - she also gave me a few samples to try. Both ladies in the shop were too busy unpacking boxes and rearranging shelves that they completely ignored me. I was ready to spend a usual $200 - $500 dollars.
