They offer different toppings like vinegar and hot sauce, and we enjoyed them at one of the high-top tables outside, just steps away from where the seafood is displayed. I was walking around Arthur Avenue and saw a sign that made my soul start to shudder with anxious anticipation, "Oyster Bar." I was visiting, so couldn't take any of the delicious fish home from the inside market, but we stood outside and ate oysters from Massachusetts, Connecticut, West Coast and Canada...on the sidewalk, at their outdoor oyster/clam bar! The prices of oysters were competitive, but the real deal was on the clams on the half shell. The employee shucked them as we waited and there were all kinds of sauces to try, as well as lemon. We ordered, half-Dozen blue point Clams , half dozen Oysters, and 4 shrimp w/ cocktail sauce on the side ! The clams were very good and yummy too! They shucked them right in front of you! There's no SEATING area , just stand and eat . The oysters, seem a but watery, so I had to drain mine for every bite or slurp I took ! . The shrimps are basically on Ice . But there are tasty w/ the cocktail sauce on them .. my bill was $28 total , maybe they add tax on . But overall the meal was good ... they have paper towels on the table as napkins for use. I used to think Randazzo's down the block was the best because I like the one in Sheepshead Bay... until I found this place!! Another great spot on Arthur Ave!! Besides being a great fish market with good prices and friendly service, you can eat fresh oysters right outside ... on the street! ... at their outdoor bar area where they have lemon, hot sauce, cocktail sauce and other things to dress your oysters as you slam them down! Love this place. I've come here multiple times already and i am always happy with the quality of the seafood. It's always fresh and tasty. I always buy oysters from here. The gentleman inside will open them up for you with no problem. I normally take them to go which i like better. Out of the dozen i get, there's always two or three with pieces of shell inside. So i take my time ensuring there's none before i eat it. But they are so tasty. Although it's wintertime, the outdoor bar is still there where you can add hot sauce, cocktail sauce and others to your oysyers if you wish to eat them on the spot. They serve them with big wedges of lemon as well. Love that. Overall i really love this place. It's really clean. Everyone inside is so friendly. They have a variety of fresh items. Bough fresh scallops and specifically asked one of the gentlemen that I needed fresh Scallops, @ approx $20 per pound which is NYC standard even at Lobster Place. However, the scallops were not fresh, they were soapy, bitter, and did not sear properly I could not even add them to a cioppino. The problem was this store, is the owner who is rude, arrogant and demeaning and on top of that, he doesn't were mask, touches seafood without gloves. Cosenza's is one of the anchor businesses that keeps Arthur Avenue going. If you want a classic Italian seafood market, it doesn't get much better than this. If it swims and Italians cook it, odds on it will be here. They even have specialty items, such as squid ink and cuttlefish. Prices are fair and the staff is knowledgeable across the board. Main problem is that this place is up in the Bronx! My favorite thing to do it get oysters and/or clams fresh on the street. You're basically paying the market prices for them, so it's a pretty good deal. During the week when it's nice outside, they setup some plastic tables and chairs so you can make a lunch out of it. As for whether Cosenza's is better than Randazzo's down the block, I don't know. Both have high quality seafood. I generally prefer Cosenza's because of location (lazy, I know) and because they typically have more varieties of oysters at their raw bar. I like my clams cooked and oysters raw. Cosenza's is right in the heart of little italy, with a small oyster bar right out front of the market. On the street you see and smell the fres fish and usually there is some crazy guy with a hose washing the street. As you step up to the outdoor ice case that holds the oysters, the water guy stops and two /six/ a dozen oysters are shucked and placed on top of the ice case. I shop at both seafood markets on Arthur Avenue, and they're both great! But this one has the BEST outdoor raw bar, all year round! They usually have up to five kinds of oysters available, and clams on a half shell - as FRESH as it gets! I don't bother ordering these in restaurants where I'm not sure how fresh they are, or how good they are. I get them right here, the best of the best. Inside the store, all the freshest varieties of fish and seafood you could want. Except babbalusia of course, which are illegal to bring into the US any more.
