We had the pleasure of chatting with the father, Mark (if I remember correctly), whose sons and nephew are all part of running this distillery. One son is stationed in D.C., the other in Hawaii, and Mark runs the distillery with help from the nephews, only opening on Saturdays. The location itself is rich in history--Mark shared that his great-grandfather, "Pappy Joe" Blackburn, purchased the farm where the distillery now stands. Built over 100 years ago, the farm sits next to a natural spring, providing the fresh mountain water they use for their whiskey. Pappy Joe, a hard-working, blue-blooded American, loved "Old Grand-Dad" whiskey, and it's clear that the family carries on that passion today. The distillery's story began with their first batch of whiskey being crafted in a hand-built still inside their uncle's old sawmill, where the distillery is now located. The sawmill itself has been around since the early 1980s. During our visit, we sampled several whiskeys: Ridge Water - A traditional corn whiskey mash bill made with corn, malted barley, and fresh spring water. At 80 proof, it had a smooth, enjoyable taste. Stahlstown Tea Party - My personal favorite, this 60 proof whiskey is infused with Bohea tea, corn, malted barley, and spring water. It's like tasting a campfire in your mouth--smoky and rich. Ridge Fire - A corn whiskey with a bit of heat, made with malted barley and corn. Another solid offering. Parkante - A unique whiskey flavored with jalapeño, ginger, and lime, all sourced from their property. Mark warned us not to drink it straight due to its spice, but it was surprisingly balanced in cocktails. We also enjoyed two cocktails while there, and I highly recommend the Mountain Mule, made with Parkante and ginger. It was absolutely delicious! The distillery is beautifully tucked away in the mountains, with a peaceful, rustic atmosphere. One thing to note if you visit: the dirt road leading up is narrow and only allows for one-way traffic, so be mindful when making the trip. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and we'll definitely be back!
