To me, a tomato was a tomato - organic was just something they added to charge you another $3. I mean, I was eating a tomato, wasn't I? Little did I know... So this summer, I decided to take the plunge and add an element of locavore to my weekly shopping. I signed up for the Stillman's CSA by default, seeing as they were the only one I could find who delivered to Brookline. A couple of friends and I split a full share, and golly gosh are we glad we did! Every week, I line up at Clear FLour with the rest of Brookline to get my delivery of fresh mouth-watering local organically grown produce. Sure, sometimes it's not what I would buy (SO many beets the first few weeks!), but it's made me exercise my recipe chops. And a local tomato is definitely not just a tomato. Sweet and tangy, it puts those watery mealy things you get at the salad bar to complete shame. And, as it turns out, it's definitely NOT hard on the budget. $450/season (20 weeks) comes out to $7/person/week for a family (or group) of three, for more vegetables than you could possibly eat! I've taken to freezing things to keep for veggie reserves in the winter. Fresh corn chowder on a cold winter night? Yes please! They do meat too! I wish I had the type of budget to sustain (haha, get it?) a membership in the turkey farm CSA. Maybe when I get a promotion... Anyhow, I'm not quite ready to give up traveling produce - after all, my Chinese roots make demands that HAVE to be seen to, and the winter in Boston is long. Russo's to the rescue, I guess. But overall, Stillman's CSA has opened my eyes to supporting local producers while they do what they do best - putting the freshest tastiest seasonal produce on my table, just as it should be.

Appears there was some mix up by the person during pick up (remote site) - but I am not sure what exactly. My wife showed up on time as requested by the emails and told the person we were there to pickup our chestnut farms meat csa and gave my name. She was handed a csa share. the person did not find a name - but said "it was the only one there". It matched what we ordered for content. Upon arriving home and unpacking, there was another name inside bag. We figured they must have received our share, and we had theirs - no big deal. This morning got email saying we did not pick up our share. Responded with an email, but thought better to call to clear up (mistake I guess now). Kim answered the phone and immediately started berating me for not picking up my share. even as I tried to interrupt her and tell her that we DID pick up our share, she then went as far to say "what did you pick up a xxxxxxxxx vegetable share?". I continued to try to explain a couple of possible causes - she kept telling me how me not picking up the share was so terrible, would not let me tell her the details, etc... Was rude over and over again, telling me I committed to the CSA it is my responsibility to pick it up, etc... obviously she/they could never have made a mistake. She just would not listen to anything I tried to say, barely let me finish 1/2 sentence. I canceled my share and hung up. One of the rudest calls I have ever been on, especially when they (or the person who handed out the share) made the mistake. I would not recommend this csa if this is how they treat their customers.

Beware though that when the corn is in there are lines and it sells out VERY quickly. It's that good! These days I no longer cook for a family. So, I'm fine requesting short ears which may or may not be imperfect and a bit less expensive. Their melons, which have been turning up lately are so delicious! Prices are a higher than what you'll see in a supermarket. You are buying fresh picked, native produce. The corn you buy today was picked at sunrise - same day!

Cooked them and when I went to peel them they were white inside. Beets might have white or pale areas due to nutrient deficiencies. They don't give you a detailed receipt so you can see what you bought for how much and comparison shop because they are more than the competition. More money for less.

As they are famous for their peaches and apples at the local farmer's market, I really wanted to see the orchard itself as well as have an in-depth chat with one of the owners, Alan, who I got to know when purchasing their amazing produce. They have a really cute farm stand with lots of pumpkins and apples around this time of the year. You also have the option on going apple picking in the orchard and see how the different apples are grown. Alan, who usually doesn't take people on a tour around the orchard, showed me around and explained all their operations throughout the year. It was really eye opening to the farming industry around this region (compared to California where it never stops). Picked up some apples and cider, enjoyed the fall colors before driving through the back route where you can see the Boston skyline from quite a distance. Definitely recommend the non-touristy experience here.

I bought two dozen eggs on a 2 dozen for $15 deal. I also bought a huge gorgeous heirloom tomato, a purple radish which was art to witness once cut into, and a bunch of leeks. Everything was delicious, and the lady who helped us was extremely knowledgeable and friendly to speak to. We visited the animals outside behind the market afterwards. There were plenty of sheep, llamas and goats to see roaming around. They were friendly and grazing. I did feel bad for one of the goats who seemed to hurt his front leg though. I hope she feels better soon! Can't wait to come back when it gets warmer outside and spend more time with the animals!
