I really enjoyed this place - it's dark and cozy - perfect for the rumors that this spot is haunted!! We stopped in on a Saturday and lucky snagged a table quickly as it was very busy. The service was exceptionally friendly - not rushing us even though it was busy and helpful with menu questions. I had to have a burger as they're supposed to be amazing - and they were! Cooked to perfection and delicious. They also have interesting meat options (bison anyone?). Jalapeño poppers were good (and seemed homemade - not frozen - they were a special when we were there). Decent wine list for a pub (good beer list also) and great, not great fries. I would definitely return. Lived here 6 years, first time visiting. Seated in 10 min on Saturday evening at 5 pm. Venue was full and lively. Kids enjoyed the hamburger and pulled pork sliders. I enjoyed the southwestern chicken wrap and a side salad. Kids devoured their sliders. My wrap was as good, but could have used a little more flavor...the side sauce provided didnt do it for me. We used to go to Country House all the time but in the past few years it's really gone downhill. I don't know if it's a change in ownership or new cooks or both. I've written them off but my husband always wants to give them another chance so every 3-4 months or so I will give in. Today we ordered our burgers medium and my mom's medium-well. All 3 came rare. The bottom buns soaked with blood. Gross! The steak fries used to be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Not anymore. Now they are barely cooked. The larger ones totally undercooked. What a gem in Clarendon Hills! A little dark but cozy feeling. The hostesses and waitress were so friendly. The wait was shorter than they quoted too! We waited closer to 10 min when they said 20 min. We started with the steakhouse onion soup, which was delicious and the cheese was broiled perfectly. The patty melt was delicious with the best grilled onions. The ribeye was charbroiled and cooked as requested. I found out about this place after someone mentioning that they have a very good burger. So of course I had to try it, especially since it's pretty close to home. The interior is dim, hole in the wall-eqsue, yet homey. The staff is friendly and they provided my daughter with a coloring sheet and plenty of crayons. I got the original country burger with 1/2 fries and 1/2 onion rings, husband got the french onion soup and the bartender steak sandwich and my daughter had the kids spaghetti and garlic bread. They tout their 1/2 lb burger and my pregnant self was able to finish all of it easily, including the fries and onion rings! It was indeed meaty and filling and the fries and onion rings were fresh and crispy. Was it the best burger I've ever had? No, but it was still decent. I always remember Country House having great food, but after my most recent visit today I'd say its just okay. Service was nothing special, our server immediately came over once we sat down but then didn't come back for over ten minutes. I had a reuben (which tasted good) but the portion was incredibly small compared to others in the area. I'm usually one to take half home for the next day, but I ate the entire thing and was still hungry. Vegetables needed something more. My dad had the bison burger and it was a good size. Old-school bar and restaurant with wood paneling. It's a bit "cozy", since this was formally a house along time ago. Most tables are four seats & they are placed close to each other. I had the bison burger upgraded to Stan's Garlic burger, which meant it was served on garlic bread with garlic butter sauce. Absolutely delicious! Awesome thick steak fries too. Quality of food isn't what it used to be. My daughter was very sick after eating here, unsure if it's food poisoning. Food has generous portions. The inside is small and close but it doesn't matter because the food is so good. They have great music, fireplace and peanuts on the bar side and about maybe 15-20 tables on the other side. I've never had a bad meal, waitress or service there. In the summer they have outdoor seating also. If you have to wait to be seated it's worth the wait. And the prices are reasonable. Grew up near their Lisle location (now closed), so Country House was a staple of my childhood, 30+ years ago. Now that Ive moved back to the area and have a family of my own, I decided to try out the Clarendon Hills location, for nostalgia sake. 10/10, its exactly as delicious as I remember, and the vibe is amazing - like a 1970s Wisconsin supper club. I have not been here since 2012 when I had a "bad night". This visit was better, but there are still some issues. We went to dinner here because they have outdoor seating. When we arrived, we were told to go inside to sign up for the outdoor dining. While we did as we were instructed, the couple behind us simply sat down at an open table, so we had to wait for an open table while they ordered and began eating. We both had the fish that was very good but the portion was small. I chose the steak fries as my side and again the portion was small. First note: if anyone in your party has a peanut allergy, don't stop here. Heartening back to old times feels like this restaurant's specialty, and peanut shells all over the floor of the bar is one of those days-gone-by touches. About half bar and half restaurant by volume, or so it seems, this old establishment has been here for ages and the structure hasn't changed much. The parking lot and outside are lovely and seem updated. My husband didn't enjoy having to walk through the fog of smokers waiting outside in order to enter. The inside though is from yesteryear and that's just the way they like it. It can be off-putting to come inside and not know how to find the hostess stand, but you'll eventually get there if you're adventurous. Bar in the right, dining room and host stand straight ahead, men's bathroom greeting you on the left. Of note, the bathrooms are minuscule. The restaurant is cramped but cozy with lots of warm wood and nostalgia. The staff is friendly. Buzzers clean off your tables quickly, and servers care enough to subtly make sure it's okay with mom if kiddo wants a third refill on that soda- I appreciated that. And they didn't balk at our bigger party of eight with some mildly silly tweens. Don't worry, we tipped well. As for the food: good stuff. This place feels like a supper club in Wisconsin, but the old fashioned cocktails are Illinois-style and they have a good selection of drinks. The burgers are called by some the best in the area and are award-winning. They're not my number one, but they are great. I love the options of game (bison, elk, I've even seen ostrich there in years past) because it lends a real unique touch to your choices. There is a new menu, which I did appreciate. We enjoyed some appetizers and a good mix of entrees, plus a dessert (dessert options were the only category with limited options). There were great pastas, great burgers, good wraps and sandwiches and a fun, pretzel-crusted fish fry. Everyone left happy, even our vegetarian (which made me very happy- you don't always know what you're going to get for vegetarian options in an old-school place, but there were several good choices!).
