Spent half an hour today at about 2:00, picking out plants, signs all said 25% off. Got to the register to pay and order two bags of manure. I was told the plant sale was only for "members" and when I went to have the manure loaded in my car, I was told it was out of stock. Back to the register to get a refund, where the clerk had the nerve to ask me to wait as my transaction would take too long. I have NEVER had a pleasant experience at this location. The Palmyra store is much better. read more

They do not stand behind their nursery plants. Last year, we purchased two Yankee Doodle lilac plants which are dark purple flowers but when it flowered this spring, it had white flowers. Not at all the look we planned for this garden. They refused to refund or replace the plants because they said the incorrect label was the fault of their supplier. A reputable company would have made it right with THEIR customer and dealt with their supplier separately. Very poor management and total lack of customer service. A waste of $80 for us and will never shop there again. BEWARE...YOU MAY NOT GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! read more

5 hours ago Last Sunday we adopted two guinea pigs. We were told they both were about 6 weeks old. After being home a few days, the smaller one stopped picking up weight and had discharge in his eyes. We immediately took him to the emergency vet and found out he had an upper respiratory infection when first adopted that had now developed into pneumonia and he basically was too far gone to likely recover from medication. They also informed us that he likely was 3 or 4 weeks at most when by now he should have been 7 based on what the worker said. This is after 6 days of having him meaning he was sick the day we purchased him and weened from his mother too early. Yesterday while caring for him and having to syringe feed him, he passed away. 7 days into owning him, we had to bury him. I cannot explain properly how traumatic this experience has been. When we got him he was in a wood cage with wood bedding. You cannot do this with guinea pigs as it will irritate their allergies and cause a URI yet a store selling animals to the general public doesn't know this?! I'm so sincerely glad I did bring him home regardless because at the very least the last part of his life was peaceful and enjoyable but Countymax has absolutely no business selling pets. At this point my wife and I are so distraught and there is no resolution because we're decent people who would not have returned a dying guinea pig without trying to care for him. Now I get to instead bring the second one to the vet to make sure he isn't also sick after paying $250 for Theo's vet bills for him to pass away after a week. This is absolute insanity and morally fucked. read more

On 3/8/03 I took my dog to the Fairport location to use the Self-service Dog Wash. Upon entering I found 2 of the 3 shampoo bottles empty (the third had barely enough for one more shampoo), the water was cold, and the grooming supplies provided were disgusting!!! The associate I found for assistance was of no help resolving the issues. He was told to allow the water to run for a few minutes before it turned lukewarm. I proceeded to wash my dog as well as I could, only to find that the so-called dryer blew only cold air. I will not return to that location again without inspecting the area BEFORE paying, probably not even under those conditions. The young associate assured me that he would pass my concerns on to the manager. I knew he was powerless to offer me a refund for this disappointing experience, so I will settle for providing this cautionary warning to anyone who considers using the Pet Wash at the Fairport location. read more

Whatever you do, do not buy a small animal from this place. Not only will they give you the wrong advice, the pet manager will pretty much have no empathy and make you feel terrible if you call to let them know your animal is sick. I bought my son a 140 dollar bearded dragon and he only lasted a month. Spent tons and tons of money on different lights, bugs, etc to try and help him. They basically blamed me for not bringing him into the vet, and when I did they told me there was absolutely nothing we did wrong, he was failure to thrive, and they had no business selling a reptile that young. But countrymax told me it was my fault since "he was perfectly healthy when I got him." Thanks for the empathy and not even offering a solution. Will never give you out business again. read more

I just love this chain, and cant believe how long it took me to find out there was one located in the center of town when I moved. This location needs to promote itself better locally. Anyway, the staff was super knowledgeable, helpful & friendly the other day when I stopped in for spider traps, and walked out with more. The store is stocked with a wide selection of pet supplies, equine equipment, lawn and garden products, farm supplies, unlike Lowes and Home Depot that carry a narrow selection of everything under the sun. I only wish they offered delivery for items that dont fit in my vehicle, but Ive made due this long - so not a big deal. read more

I love Country Max. Whenever I need something for my yard, pond, dog or fish, it's a one stop shop. Everyone is knowledgeable and super friendly. With the cold weather we get, they were able to solve a pond freezing issue I have had for years. Last year they suggested an live stock water trough heater to keep it from freezing over & keeping my fish alive. No more bubbler issues and cracking ice in the middle of the winter. It worked perfect, just put it in again! Thank goodness they have so much pet & livestock supplies. Can't imagine where else to get everything you need like that. read more

Ordered dog food double bowl. Picture was in white. The listing said it came in assorted colors but gave me no options to select anything other than the picture of white. I wanted white. I ordered 2 of them. One sent black. Do not want a black dog food dish. Called and talked with customer service. Was to follow-up on Friday. Today is Monday. Not a word. Told me they would not send a mailing label so I could return item and get a credit. Would have to return on my own cost. The 2 items were $5.58! Really poor customer service and bad information/pictures on website. No ownership of problem or attempt to please customer. read more

My children and I are new to Gerbils we stumbled upon two at CountryMax in Fairport. There was a very helpful employee Meredith. She really enjoys her job and animals. She took time to show my children how to care for them, what to feed them, what toys they want. We left the store quite happy. When we got home we realized the enclosure we bought was too small for the two Gerbils so we returned back to the store and they swapped it out no questions asked. Meredith again helped us find the perfect enclosure. Fast Forward and 3 trips (returns) later we finally have the perfect setup. Meredith is awesome and the store staff was very helpful. I highly recommend this location and if you need help try to find Meredith she is very energetic and very friendly. read more
