Tip: We parked about 2 blocks away on a (shaded!) side street for free. We avoided the crowded pay parking lot.

My friends and I spent time walking around the Stockyards area, popping into shops, window shopping at some very luxurious western wear stores, and soaking in the atmosphere. Between the cowboy boots, giant belt buckles, hats, leather goods, and rustic architecture, the entire area felt like a mix of Texas history and tourist attraction. The highlight for me, of course, was watching the famous cattle drive featuring ENORMOUS Texas longhorn cattle walking right down the middle of the street!!! It was something I had never experienced before and I found it fascinating! Yes, I do wish it lasted a little longer, but as an introduction to Texan culture and Stockyards history, it was fantastic and memorable. Standing there and watching these massive animals casually stroll through town while crowds gather to cheer and take photos - wow, just wow! There have been businesses that have closed down and new businesses to replace them. There was an art market shop that I checked out and liked, however it is no longer there. I recommend checking out Dough'd up (low sugar, protein donut shop) and race street coffee which offers yummy beverages and pastries. They were both very friendly and soothing. This lowered my WRATh a little. Once we signed in, we started talking to existing and now new friends and the WRAth is lowering down even more. We were finding that several friends had had as lovely of a day as I had had. The very attentive and friendly servers brought out our special drink "The Little Red Wasp" man this thing is spicy but I feel the WRath is getting even lower. The homemade pimento cheese and chips oh so very good. The Wrath is even lower. After having a great meal, Egg Salad Sandwich and a Breckenridge Porter, and the wrath is gone. Haven't been in a number of years, and decided to check out this year's arts fest. Once finished…read moreexercising at the downtown YMCA, I simply walked over to Main Street. Don't think I spent a full hour looking at all the vendors, but I checked out each one and thoroughly enjoyed myself. A few of the vendors I recognized from years gone by. Others were brand new to me. For some reason, the flow of the event seemed better organized from what I remember. Or maybe it was because it was the first day of the event. Who knows? There were definitely less people out wandering around. Just wait until the weekend. Ha ha! Having formerly worked in downtown on Main Street, I swung by where the old shop was formerly located. After a few minutes of reminiscing, I continued on my way. In the end, the wares offered are a want and not a need, and certainly way out of my meager budget. I still enjoy looking at everything. There were also two bands performing, but I didn't feel like sticking around. May come back before the festival ends on Sunday.

Of course it started raining right when we arrived- but that didn't seem to deter any of the other fest-goers so we stood fast in line to grab our tickets. They have $20 vouchers for the crawfish stand and $5 vouchers for beers- I didn't pay much attention to the other ones, but I like that everything is a set price. The event was basically vendors lined up on one small side street, with a large stage at the back end next to the crawfish booth with the ticket sales at the opposite end where you enter. I think they should definitely add a crawfish booth or at least open up another lane to get everyone in and out. you can tell its a local favorite and I bet it will only grow next year. We ended up not even eating crawfish because the line was about 100 people deep since they only had one stand selling the mudbugs. The stand was next to the stage and the line spanned the entire festival area back to the ticket line. so we just had to drool as people walked away with their big plates of crawfish as we stood next to the beer booth- liquid lunch was just as good though! They had a lot of local vendors. My first purchase was the fresh kettle corn and pork rinds. They had brought out their beg kettle and everything- so it was still warm and slightly sticky- went perfect with the lager. We also went ham in the Brown Sugar Vintage booth- tons of canned, homemade preserves, pickles, butters and veggies. I took home the Sweet Potato Pecan Butter, Strawberry Rhubarb preserves, and a few of the spicy pickled items and my uncle bough a few jars as well. I was a little confused as to how big the event was- as I was leaving I saw more vendors set up on a parallel street, but the area I was in was all fenced off so I'm not sure if it was still part of the fest. Maybe you guys could have a map next year? I'll give it another shot next time for mudbugs- and pray for no rain!

This district brings life and empowerment to what some may consider an abandoned neighborhood. Some of the art works of done by local artists and some of the pieces are apart of a #28Mantra exhibit. The mantras are not in order or located in one area gifting you the experience to explore the neighborhood finding them all while stumbling across some local businesses!
