There is one in the…read morefall, but it's not as big because most of the vendors for the fall festival are Kentucky Proud. I remember going to the Berea Craft Festival a few times as a kid. I remember watching as the artists did their craft and art demonstrations. I specifically remember watching the candle maker dip a string in hot wax and creating a handmade candle. As a small child, I had no idea that was how candles were made. I was amazed. Finally, yesterday I went back to summer The Berea Craft Festival. My husband thought that it would be downtown, but it's not. We pulled up downtown and it wasn't the scenery that I remembered. I remembered it being in a heavily wooded area. So, I pulled up the event listing on Facebook and found the actual address, which was 11 minutes from downtown. As we pulled up, the first parking area was far from the festival, so there were a few shuttles. Most people were walking via the Indian Fort Trail, which is a heavily wooded and shaded walking trail that leads to the festival area. There is a closer parking area, right at the entrance, but it's heavily congested. So, if you have the time and energy, park at the first lot and walk the trail. The admission is $6 per person. Seniors get in at a $5 rate. If the admission fee deters you, I'd recommend checking out the Lexington Woodland Arts Fair in Lexington, it's very similar to this festival, but it's free. A big difference in the two festivals is that you will find several art demonstrations here. Although I didn't see a candlemaker this year, I watched a blacksmith at work and woodworker making art with a manual carving machine. The area within the festival this year is muddy. They laid down a ton of hay, but my shoes still got very muddy, so don't wear flip-flops or good shoes. I don't consider myself very artsy, but I enjoy window shopping, as I did here. I walked away with $5 fresh squeezed lemonade and artisan cheese.

It's very similar to the Woodland Art Fair, but less artsy, and more crafty. It's always held the weekend before Labor Day. Because it's so close to fall, you'll find a lot of Halloween and fall themed decor too. All of the vendors are locals, or At Kentuckians and are all are very friendly. I was looking for a specific metal sign, there was one vendor selling them and shes able to custom make what I want... so if you're looking for something specific, don't be afraid to ask a vendor to customize. The food is in one area and a lot of those vendors are similar to what you'll find at fairs. This year, I had a Polish sausage and a blooming onion. I'm literally going to be thinking about those for the rest of the year!!

Very intimate layout with great access to food, drinks and bathrooms. Even with the diverse crowd, it was a great atmosphere. Sound and line-up was solid all day. The festival celebrates all things Asparagus, since the climate and soil in this region of Kentucky is perfect for growing the vegetable beginning at 9:30 am and going until 10:00 in the evening. The town of Mayslick is lovely--a very old town, founded in 1788, but now, a sleepy little southern town, full of good people, a few antique shops, and home to the first consolidated negro school in Kentucky, begun in 1921 and closing in the early 1960's with integration, which has been lovingly restored over the years by the town and many of the alumni. The festival centers on the main street, which is closed to any car traffic. There are several vendors, one of my favorite being Homestead Greenhouses, an Amish greenhouse that offers heirloom varieties of tomatoes, fresh strawberries, Amish fried pies (cherry is the bomb!) and perennial selections that are a fraction of the cost you would spend at a local greenhouse. There is a very large Amish and Mennonite settlement that lies in the outskirts of Mayslick. Another favorite is Sunflower Sundries, from Mt. Olivet, from whom I've been buying soaps and whole grain mustards and elderberry jams from for YEARS. Jennifer Gleason, the proprietess of Sunflower Sundries is on the festival board and really loves to make the experience unique each and every year. Each year, there seems to be different vendors, so if you see something you want, get it or get a business card because they likely won't be back the next season! I was introduced to Cincinnati's Grateful Grahams at this festival, a totally delicious vegan graham crackers made in small batches by a gal here in Cincy, that I now have delivered in my Green Bean Delivery box each week, and I've gotten beautiful handmade pottery, hand made upcycled children's clothing from a woman in Frankfort, even tupperware. You just never know, so do bring some cash! The food vendors are fantastic--local pork and beef farms, and of course, ASPARAGUS!!! A variety of enticing offerings from grilled or fried asparagus and the "tasting room" sponsored by the festival has all things asparagus on the menu, including ice cream, soup, quiches, etc. Whatever your little veggie loving heart desires, all served up by some of the most welcoming folks I've ever met. Don't forget to hit Flat Fork Pork for their pulled pork sandwich, one of the best pork bbq's I've had in sometime. There is an annual art show, housed in a gorgeous old church in the center of town (you can't miss it!) has entries from local artists that depict Asparagus in all mediums, some works are for purchase, others not, and there is a voting booth where you can submit your choice for the festival favorite. Two bandstands and a variety of musicians performing--sometimes it's gospel, sometimes it's covers of country and rock tunes, but I've been lucky enough each year to stick around for Karly Dawn Higgins & Sarah Wood, two instructors from the Cowan Creek Mountain School of Music who are ultra talented gals playing original mountain tunes and they really make the festival even more special for me. You can take a tractor ride to the Burwall Farm where you can pick your own asparagus, meet the new baby chicks and experience an informative Q & A with the farm's owner, talk with the extension service about local asparagus, sample recipes and give your thumbs up or "nay". Remember, it's only held one day, on the 3rd Saturday of May, so make your plans for 2013!

Upon entering the barn style store, we noticed very quickly how the inside was clean and staff were friendly. We got a few things to try at home like the fudge and doughnuts. We also got some food: BLT, burger, chips, drinks, etc. There are a lot of places to take beautiful fall photos. We were 3 adults and a toddler, thankfully we paid a reduced price to enter the activity area because only the toddler did anything & it was too cold / wet to do most of the activities. She loved the petting zoo area & had a blast in the corn pit. I recommend going even on a day the sun doesn't shine. Be sure to wear boots.
