I recently had my worst stay in my life at courtyard by Marriott Newport News Yorktown. I checked in on July 16th of 2026 and on the same day the toilet was clogged, so I walked to the front desk and asked the lady to send someone to help me and she was very rude and told me I don't have anyone that can help you and she gave me a plunger to go fix it myself, and I actually did take it and fixed it myself. Second day at 2 pm, I saw a room service staff at the hall so I asked her if they do clean all rooms routinely everyday or I need to request room service and again this Second Lady was the rudest, interrupting me and saying I did not get to your room yet and she walked away. I came back to the room at 7 pm same day and found out no one entered the room to clean it or change the towels so I called room service on the phone and once I started talking and asking how come no one came to the room until 7 pm and the lady answered me was so rude again and she interrupted me and saying ok I'm sending you towels now and she just sent a man with towels to the room and he came in putting the towels on the bed and did not even take the dirty towels from the restroom, not taking trash or anything else. Third day, I waited again for someone to come clean the room, take the trash and replace the towels and still no one came I decided to go to the front and ask for a manager and looks like the manager was the rude person answered my call the day before and she was talking to me in a very rude way again and then once she asked me if I am marriott bonvoy member and i said yes, her way completely changed and she started apologizing about what happened and she said ill put some points in your account lol I travel for work almost every week and this was really my worst experience ever in a hotel and I'm really switching to Hilton instead. read more

We were only here for a quick overnight stay but observed numerous things that let us know this particular Courtyard is not staffed or managed well. When we got to our room, the floor just inside the door was sticky. It apparently hasn't been mopped in forever. We used a washcloth to clean the sticky area. It was disgusting. Exhaust vent in our bathroom didn't work. We stayed in a room on the side facing the chicken finger fast food restaurant. There was a very bright light on a pole (looked to be on the hotel's property) that was shining right into the windows. Why wouldn't they install one with baffles to cast the light only down towards the ground? The blackout shades didn't cover the window 100% so we had light shining in all night. The public bathroom on the first floor was out of paper towels. I pointed that out the night we checked in. I visited the same bathroom in the morning after breakfast and still no paper towers. I mentioned it again and the 2 ladies working seemed indifferent. :/ The place is a little run down. read more

This place definitely needs some sprucing up & deep cleaning. The stairs are failing apart & are definitely a fall hazard. The bedroom has lights that didn't turn on, so I felt like I was in a dungeon. The wash cloths are thin as if they came from Dollar Tree & there was hair all on them as well as everywhere else. Ugh!!! There was blood on the wall. The towel rack in the bathroom was broken off half way & the shower door would not stay closed. It just kept sliding open during our showers & no matter how many times we closed it, it would just open back up. The staff wasn't overly friendly. They weren't the worst though. There is a microwave and mini fridge in the room. The pool is closed. There are several restaurants nearby & Texas Roadhouse is right next door. I'm never coming back here. I felt dirty the whole time I was in my room due to the amount of hair all over the place. That simply grosses me out. read more

Honestly, not a bad stay at all! Convenient location; near a great selection of restaurants, quick access to i64, and a lower rate than other hotels in worse areas of town. Service: Front desk staff are fantastic. Friendly, kind, and accommodating. The bistro staff are a bit meh, but I guess you can't have it all. Room: Very spacious! For starters the bed was actually comfy. There are ample outlets and usb outlets in convenient places, great tv size ready for you to sign into your Netflix account, the A/C actually worked (albeit loudly), same with the fridge, and the desk was a great size. It even had a desk that could be rolled over to where the couch was. The flooring was also a nice touch. Half laminate with the bed area being on carpet. My only complaint was the shower room - considering the room was meant to be handicap accessible, I have no idea how the shower got so hot so quickly, nor how the removable shower head was so high up. A couple of lights needed replacing in the mirror and hall area, it didn't affect the overall lighting of the room, and the toilet was leaking ever so slightly from the base - totally fixable, clearly an oversight. Ambiance: The main lobby area is very easy in the eye, with great seating options and space for you to work (if you want to leave your room for a change of scenery.) Parking can be tricky if it's busy. But overall, a great stay. Highly recommend! read more

This place was okay. Rooms were decent and clean, they had a big and heated pool, a hot tub (or tub, as it was not heated but they were "working on it") and a fitness room with a few machines and weights. Plenty of parking. There's a nearby shopping plaza for groceries and a few restaurants and fast foods within that area, but none of them were breakfast-serving places. Stayed here 3 nights and the trash never got emptied, so by the end there was quite a pile by the 2 teeny tiny trash cans. On the last night, we were about to leave as housekeeping arrived, so we asked them to come back in 5 minutes, left, and when we returned they just skipped the room instead of coming back. As a bit of a neat freak, it's disheartening to come back to a messy room when part of what I'm paying for is housekeeping. We had to go to front desk to ask for new shampoos/cups since a tiny bottle doesn't last 2 people for 3 nights but they refilled nothing. I would have given it a 5 on amenities if it hadn't been for multiple nights of getting no service. If you are coming for 1 night, you won't have to deal with that issue. read more

The lobby is tastefully decorated to recognize breast cancer month and Halloween. Marriott team we name is September member at the front desk, very professional and provided a superb efficient accurate check-in. The hotel smells great the hotel has a lot of boutique hotel touches. The rooms are very modern I love the numerous outlets (USB) with lamps and the hard floors not carpet! For a Marriot hotel, I highly suggest finding a different spot to crash. This hotel is hidden from the main street and just overall unimpressive. Service is slow and lacking. Rooms are carpet-less and cold. Beds are less than average for comfort. Outdoor areas are unkept and messy. The café area is expensive and really lacking any type of qualitative caffeine beverages. The lobby is always busy with other patrons/guest who are almost rude to each other. And worst of all, the Wi-Fi is awful. This hotel is also about 20 to 25 mins from any military bases depending on traffic. There are multiple other hotels in the immediate area that are better looking and better maintained. read more

Front desk staff is awesome. Totally worked with me when I checked in and got my reservation all squared away. This would had been a 5 star review but the staff who works at the morning bistro is "rude". First he does not answer the phone, second he does not allow to go orders in the morning and third when asked if he has something on the menu he responds to we only have what's on the menu. Seriously dude! I have been places where not all items are available or there are other options separate of the menu... maybe my anger is that I am overtired but it would be nice if you could call in to go orders rather than waiting 20 min for food to be cooked! read more

Was in town one night for a surprise party. I was extremely disappointed ......... that I couldn't spend more time at this fantastic property!!! Clean, inexpensive, friendly and comfortable are only a few ways that I can describe thin gem. I have stayed at Courtyards before and this hotel and their amazing staff solidifies my loyalty. Great location - walking distance to two restaurants. Great staff - very friendly. Things were not exactly smooth at first but how the staff handled the situation made a fan. We originally had a room on the 3rd floor but the elevator decided to break at that exact moment. We had already been screwed over by US Airways arriving 6 hours late and I was in no mood to carry my 50lb bag up 3 flights of stairs. One of the maintenance workers immediately saw what was going on and said, "I'll carry your bag. No problem!" Very sweet of him and most appreciative but I was also in no mood to hoof it up and down 3 flights in that heat myself. The front desk found another room on the first floor and, I'm not joking, 3 employees ran to the room to give it a once over. One ran to get towels. One was wiping everything down. All was well here until hey decided to have a truck in the FRONT of the establishment backing up every 2 seconds at 7 am!!! Who does that?! Thank you Courtyard for thinking of the guests that PAID to get a decent nights sleep and not caring at all about waking the entire hotel up! Not to mention waking up my kids at a time that's completely unacceptable for a vacation. I WILL contact corporate. UNACCEPTABLE!!! UPDATE: Shortly after I wrote this, I checked out and was told I owed more money because the date changed. Let me tell you that the manager, Susan, is extremely unprofessional and rude. We had a great stay here recently. Nice room with plenty of space, it's undergoing construction (although that didn't bother us at all, didn't hear any noise in our room) to update areas like the fitness room. But it's a great location, plenty of restaurants and shopping nearby. The staff was very helpful and friendly. I'd definitely stay here again. read more

This was decent enough hotel. I wasn't there for fun...strictly business. The room was nice and spacious. For some reason I got a goody bag with chips when I check in. I'm not sure why, but I did enjoy them as an evening snack. There are plenty of restaurants nearby (Ruby Tuesday's is practically in the parking lot), a mexican place, and something else as well. Across the street is a Hardees, Chic Fil A, McDonald's and for those that need a coffee fix, there is a Starbucks in the Kroger. Overall, it was a good stay. The free wi fi was a bonus. Upon arrival around 4:15pm, there was no one at the front desk. I waited a few minutes and heard giggles so I went around towards the back and shouted out a Hello? a few times. 2 ladies came out to help me. One of them asked if I was here on business and then asked with which company. I told her ***** and she said that they've been trying to get our business forever but we refuse to switch hotels (I stayed here because the Courtyard Marriott at Jefferson Rd and City Center, our regular hotels were booked). She said she was glad I was here and I believed her. She was very kind. I asked if they had free Breakfast here, she said no and asked if the other Courtyard did, and I responded Yes. She offered me free Bfast... for one day or week I'm not sure... I drag my suitcase and travel bag upstairs. Walk all the way down the hall to one of the farthest rooms. The key doesn't work! I keep trying because sometimes, they are wonky. A gentleman opens the door and says it's his room and we cannot share. So embarrassing. Back downstairs they realize they wrote the wrong room on my card and tell me the correct room. One lady apologizes and says please have dinner on us... and hands me a bfast coupon. I drag my suitcase and travel bag back upstairs. And of course, the keys don't work. Back downstairs they said they made me the wrong key. They offered me bfast for the week and dinner one night but honestly I'd rather just have a quick check-in. They did check in on me to see if I got in, that was appreciated. I came up to my room and although the bathroom is a bit dated and the room was musty smelling, overall it is really nice. I noticed that they do not have a garbage can in the room or bathroom, only by the sink, I a little strange. I guess it can only get better from here? Update 6/5/13 Tony in the restaurant. For him alone I would consider staying here. He was so friendly and accommodating. His personality is a great asset to the Courtyard. Asian Chicken Salad and Hot Bfasts great! Guac.... not so much As of yesterday, they began pumping an apple perfume through the ventilation system. At first it was nice, sometimes it makes my eyes burn. But overall, if it were a little lighter, it would be very nice. The staff is extremely friendly, I wrote my housekeeper a note and she wrote back! It was really cute. I love this place, the only complaints I have are: one the housekeeping staff seems to slack because I'm staying here long term. I find days on days where they don't vacuum. Two the bistro is a little pricy but what makes it worse is each employee chargers different prices for identical items and there's not consistency in how items, mainly coffee, are made. Some of the staff who work the bistro can't make certain Starbucks items that other staff members can. The front desk staff in one word AMAZING!!! And Marquiss in the bistro is the MAN!!! All and all very comfortable and happy here, and I travel a lot and stay at a lot of different hotel chains. This place is a must stay. read more

First, room service did not take care of my room the first two days. Ask the front desk to send a card (with all the postage and return address) still waiting a week later for it to arrive. Made reservations for a business trip 2 weeks in advance. Upon arrival, I was told that they had "over booked" and had no room for me. While the lady at the desk was very apologetic and offered me a free stay at another courtyard 7 miles down the road, I was obviously frustrated that after my 3-plus hour drive I had to get back in the car and go to another place. Additionally, the free breakfast wouldn't be honored at the new hotel but I could "drive back here in the morning" for my free breakfast. Thankfully, after standing at the desk for 20 minutes this lady found me a room at the other Courtyard. I understand the concept of over-selling to ensure a minimum of unbooked rooms but good grief! If you charge my credit card, you better damn well have a place for me to sleep! read more

The staff was extremely polite, welcoming, and very helpful each and every time we walked by the front desk. We had one VERY unpleasant experience during this stay. One morning, all of us (including my 2 year old son), left our room and got on to the elevator to head out for the day. As the elevator door was closing, a female security guard (who the location contracts with since they were there throughout our stay) reached into the elevator door to stop it from closing. This was odd to us because she hadn't done this any of the other times we got on the elevator. After stopping the door from closing, she reached down towards our son, grabbed his face, and kissed his cheek. She then walked out of the elevator and went back to sitting in the chair. She did all of this within about 3 seconds and all without saying a single word. It happened so fast and without any warning that we weren't able to do anything to stop it. We were and are still absolutely appalled and disgusted by this woman's actions. Immediately after she did this, we had to wash my son's face with sanitizing wipes due to not knowing if this woman had cold sores, hepatitis, or any other transferable illness or virus that could have been spread by this unwanted and disgusting act. I have attempted to get in touch with management at this location using Marriott Customer Care with no success. Corporate has apologized to me multiple times and tells me each week that someone will contact me. The only thing that they have done is given me "Bonus" points (which doesn't mean much to me). Other than that, my voice has gone unheard by local management in regards to this matter. read more

You never know what you're going to get with a Newport-News area hotel. I'm happy to report that we were pleasantly surprised! Everything was immaculate. Absolutely no complaints about the room. We even had a microwave, which I wasn't expecting since so many hotels don't include them anymore. I had put in a few simple requests (first floor, some extra towels) - when we arrived in the room everything was in place with a note ensuring that they had met every need. We stayed at a group rate and everything was charged correctly. The best part was the staff. Every single person we encountered during our stay was friendly, polite, and helpful. The front desk received a package for me before check-in and held onto it until I got there. The folks at the bistro were fantastic and the food was way more than I expected from a hotel lobby. The fitness center and hotel were clean and had great hours. Walking distance to 3 Amigos and Texas Roadhouse, etc. The only thing I can find to complain about is that housekeeping keyed into the room at about 7:45 the morning of check-out because they thought the room had already been cleared out. We had a fantastic stay and will definitely visit again! read more

My stay here was a Nightmare on Elm Street......people are running up and down the hall banging on doors all hours of the night......Strange people in the hotel roaming chasing behind you screaming, " that's my grandson"....trying to grab my boyfriend......I complained to front desk, management, and to no avail this sat on deaf ears....I made it clear I was afraid for my life bc the crazy women came to my room....her response was, and I quote..."we don't have that here in Yorktown, I just never heard of anything like that in Yorktown....." I was shocked!!! I told her crime happens everywhere...she said she did not see anything wrong....I told here thanks for not helping and being so inconsiderate. Chris, works the front desk, he needs training. He's words has no meaning. He makes false promises and never follow through, not once did he return my calls, and I called more than twice. ..the hotel itself is ok for a quick night, just triple lock the door and have some mace available.......this hotel has no security...the manager feels that the area is safe....My advice is, don't live in a bubble and be conscientious of guest, rather than totally dismissing someone..SO RUDE. read more

The walls are paper thin. I checked in for a restful sleep. What can a body do? Staff was friendly on check in. Room could use some repairs, stain removal. Ugh, but I am hearing every breath of my neighbors. This is not pleasant. Oh! And the glasses in the room are filthy. Usually a a pretty decent nightly rate for the area, staff is always super friendly, rooms are clean, and despite the hotel looking full due to a full parking lot, it's mostly quiet. We were gonna stay one night but ended up staying 3 nights, everything was clean!!! The room, the pool & jacuzzi, weight rm, hallways, landscape, you could tell they took pride!!! The cleaning ladies were awesome & everybody spoke English were I could understand them & they were helpful & polite. The restaurants, grocery stores were within walking distant. So, I waited around for about an hour just to get into my room. Now I'm in the room, and the light switch for the bathroom is not in the bathroom, but in fact, in the bedroom. This is less than ideal to say the least. The food I got was supposed to be Chick-Fil-A, but it seemed like horse meat poorly disguised as chicken with pickles on the side. Awful experience. If this hotel is an example of how Marriott represents itself today, the quality has definitely gone way down. After driving 13 hours we arrived to a room that smelled like old fish, urine, sex, and just plain old nasty. The carpet was filthy and the bathroom had something wet all over the floor. When notifying the attendant at the front desk, she sent someone from housekeeping to spray the room. He tried his best but that did not help. I immediately told the young lady at the front desk and she has absolutely zero knowledge of how to handle customer complaints. Of course the manager was not there either. Isn't that how it always works. Anyway I had to find myself another hotel since the girl at the desk did not have any knowledge in customer service. Did I also mention that there was no ac in the hallways or elevators. It was only over 100 degrees outside After my 13 hour drive. We probably would have had a better experience at the motel 6!!!!! My wife and I stayed at this hotel for almost a week. HORRIBLE!!! When we first checked in, it was after midnight. The young lady that checked us in Shauntae was EXTREMELY pleasant and accommodating. She was informative and offered her services at any point of the night during her shift prior to sending us to our room. Once we get to our room, we notice a funny smell, possibly mildew and my wife's allergies couldn't take it so we called down to the front desk to let Shauntae know. She was very empathetic, apologetic and swift with getting us transferred to another room. She left the front desk unattended to walk our new room keys to us as well as a luggage cart and told us not to worry about bringing it back down, that'd she'd come and get it because it was so late and she understood us being tired travelers. My wife worked for the aloft hotel for 6 years and was very pleased with her customer service. On to the next day, the elevators were down for hours!! The front desk rep during the day was admittedly inexperienced but friendly and handling guest inquiries as best she could. My wife and I left for the day and came back to our room having not been serviced by housekeeping. We called and spoke with the front desk rep who was apologetic but didn't offer much but fresh towels. We obliged and asked that we be put in contact with the general manager David Richardson. When speaking to David, it wasn't hard to determine that he's completely incompetent and nonchalant to guest resolution. He blamed everything on the ownership and new management. He goes on to say how the owners are more concerned with irrelevant things like Re-paving the parking lot instead of replacing the elevator or hiring more staff. He NEVER offers us resolution to our specific issues. We go on to ask for contact information for the owners and he indicates he's not allowed to give us that. The next morning, the bistro opened 30 mins late (7am instead of 630am) and the young lady is struggling to run it on her own but very friendly at doing so, but the wait time was extreme for just two fruit smoothies. My wife and I returned late that evening from Busch gardens and we encounter Shauntae again, she remembers us, asks about our stay. We explain that it's been hectic and we probably won't stay again. Immediately this young lady asks what can she do to Change our minds!! Blows us away with her concern, but since we had already spoken with her superior David, we knew it wouldn't be much she could offer so went to bed. During our last day there, we walk into the lobby to witness David and another worker from the bistro completely yelling at one another! There were multiple guests in the lobby and other employees to witness. This woman from the bistro was arguing about not being paid her tips and David's response, again, yelling at this young lady was he didn't know how to pay out her tips so she would have to wait!! We were floored!!! No one comes to work expecting to wait for their pay!! David then storms out of the front door and leaves his poor girl upset at work. If we hadn't already made the decision to never stay here again, this definitely would have done it. That night, we check out and we ask the front desk clerk how can we leave a note specifically for Shauntae and she informed us that she had been separated from the company for leaving the post and having her son at work with her. We were SHOCKED!!! As a business owner, it became quite evident that this establishment does not care about its employees. And has a lot of growing to do in the professionalism area. During this entire stay, the only person that treated us like Marriott rewards members was the dedicated employee that they separated from the company. Seems like this hotel fires the competent and places the incompetent in management positions. This hotel doesn't even deserve to have the Marriott name affiliated with it. I wouldn't let my pets stay here!! Take your money elsewhere folks! PS; if anyone local knows the young lady Shauntae, she mentioned being in school for cyber security, please let her know I would love to hire her in a management position for customer relations at Sentara Norfolk General. I've been to a lot of hotels. Courtyards in general arent as fancy as the regular Marriott hotels but they're more family oriented. The rooms usually have a little fridge in case you got a little child and need to store the milk somewhere cool, they always have cribs or baby showergels...etc. So when it comes to family traveling, courtyards are great. This particular one is also quite good. Nice receptionist who eventbough our shower wasnt working did everything in his powers to solve the issue with minimal incoveniece for us. Also the rates are pretty good. Dont take a chance with Expedia and other junky sites to book, call them directly. In my case it cost the same and I didnt have to risk ending up in some weird hotel. read more
