I was receiving dental care from another provider in town and was feeling I needed a change. Several friends recommended Courtyard Dental. As a prior dental hygienist, I am extremely particular about dental facilities. Probably too hard on them, I will admit. From the moment I walked in the door, I felt welcome and at ease. This dental office is organized, has incredible equipment and experienced and talented staff. I was able to get a great cleaning and am now undergoing orthodontic treatment as well. I am so grateful for the referral and intend to move my entire family to this dental practice. The other area I was especially concerned with is the financials of this office. I had a bad prior experience, but this practice actually calls your insurance company and gets a verification of what your coverage is and breaks down your costs prior to doing the work. This review is for the hygienist Mona, Dr Barretto, and Dr Gabr. I always hated trips to the dentist, until I came to Courtyard dental. The minute I walked through the door I was made to feel comfortable, and at ease. I hadn't seen a dentist in over 5 years, Dr Barretto helped come up with a treatment plan for the issues with my teeth, and Mona has provided me with 2 cleanings now. All the treatment I've gotten done there has been fantastic and pain free. Mona was able to explain to me everything that was going on and how it would be treated, her cleanings are thorough and make your mouth feel great. The work that Dr Baretto and Dr Gabr performed was pain free, stress free, and quick. I strongly recommend making this office your individual or family dentist! They're great! read more

DO NOT go here if you want your teeth to be healthy and if you want good preventative care. DO go here if you want to say you went to the dentist but don't care about the health of your teeth. The office staff and Dr. Hickmont are nice. The problem is, they don't take care of your teeth or gums. Their "cleaning" consists of a treatment similar to using a WaterPik at home. It is not high tech, it's lazy. They don't scrape the excess tartar or plaque on your teeth which helps to keep your teeth and gums healthy. They don't check to see if your gums are receding. If you care about the health of your teeth, go elsewhere ASAP. read more

I was a fan. It's true, per the favorable reviews, that the staff is friendly, they use state of the art equipment, and Dr. Hickmott is incredibly personable and charming. Yes their teeth cleaning equipment makes cleanings shorter in duration, although I have heard and believe that it does not make your teeth as clean as the tried and true old fashioned way. More importantly, the reason I will never go back, similar to another review I just read, I have come to understand that they are recommending expensive major treatments that simply are not required and in some cases appear to be unethical. After receiving multiple "Treatment Plans" with letters indicating that I have unresolved treatments pending, that actually stacked up over time to be a number of items totaling in the thousands of dollars, I decided to go for some second opinions. Whereas two minor items were agreed upon and recommended, the expensive big items were observed to be completely unnecessary and suggested as unethical recommendations. It was shared that there seems to be an alarming number of recommended dental procedures in the area that simply are not needed.... Who has time, money or pain thresholds for unnecessary dental procedures just to help someone hit their financial goals. Not me. read more

AVOID DR. HICKMOTT!, I went to Dr. HICKMOTT for a check up, he sold me front crowns to fix a gap I had no interest in changing. He did such a bad job that for the last 18 plus years I've been paying both physically and financially. I've spent close to 35K to repair his mistake. I've had to have bone graft surgery, implants and crowns. After several crowns, gum surgeries and years of pain and no front teeth. It destroyed my self confidence, I had to be on a liquid diet and it goes on and on. Stay away. He knew he screwed up because he made me sign a release that I would not sue him. The staff is great except for Ashley who is unfortunately the first person a client sees entering the office or speaking to on the phone. She is very rude and seems to have an attitude. Dr Hickmoot as others have reported is very nice and has done a good job with my teeth, but beware there are unethical business practices here. I have reported them to my insurance company for fraud. They billed a $200 consultation fee to my insurance without my knowledge. I found out when I saw my insurance benefit report a month later. read more

10 Years ago when I moved to San Ramon my neighbor recommended Dr. Hickmott and Courtyard Dental. I really dread going to the dentist, because I had a lot of bad experiences growing up, but as soon as I walk in the staff is so friendly and non-judgmental that I relax and am grateful. For some reason my earlier review, together with other bad reviews have been filtered out so that only the good reviews remain. Therefore I would like to add an update to my earlier review. I stopped using Courtyard Dental after they continuously overcharged me, suggested treatments I didn't need and as soon as I pointed out their professional mistakes, they became extremely rude and unprofessional without even asking for clarification or investigating the matter. I now have a new dentist, who agrees that some of the treatment I received in the past from Dr. Hickmott had been unnecessary. Also, I just had to get a filling replaced that had been put in poorly by Dr. Hickmott at Courtyard Dental a little over a year ago!! My new dentist pointed out that it looked like inferior materials had been used and that the old filling had been put in in a hurry, without proper finishing. So, unless you like receiving and (over-)paying for bad dental treatment you don't need, look for another dentist! read more

I don't even live in the area anymore, but I don't want to leave this practice. Kristen is my favorite hygenist. I have been in contact with my insurance company and they advise you to revise your eob as it was submitted as a cleaning and a cleaning was not performed. Unless you feel a flossing of teeth and a polish is a cleaning. I will not be coming back into the office as we have paid out of pocket for a proper cleaning for my daughters teeth. read more

Beware! Yes, it seems state of the art, yes the staff is personable, and then you move, and you find all the work you paid the highest prices for, has to be redone! And not just one person - our whole family. Corners cut, work incomplete, misfit crowns or fillings, all need to be redone. And yes, we went there for years! OK, I have no idea what these other people who gave Dr. Hickmott 1 star are talking about, Mark is a terrific dentist. I've had several dentists in my life and lots of orthodontic, dental surgery work. I am 55 and have seen dentists come and go and I had a lot of teeth problems earlier in my life. I hated going to the dentist until my wife suggested I try her dentist Dr. Mark Hickmott about 12 years ago. So I did. I was wary at first because I always hated the way cleanings were done by my previous dentists, but Mark used better techniques and equipment and it made me feel comfortable going to the dentist. I had some work done way before Mark was my dentist that was pretty crappy, Mark just kept an eye on it for several years until it began to look like it was coming apart. Then he fixed it in two visits and I have had zero problems with that area since. From the beginning Mark took an interest in the fact that my gums were receding. And I was getting a lot of sensitivity. He explained to me how this could be a problem and what I could do to help stop it. He measured the gum line every time I went in and gave me instruction on how to slow the gums from receding. It has been a success. Over the years I had some dental issues of course, mainly work that was done previous to Mark becoming my dentist had to be redone... Stuff like fillings falling out and a couple cavities. But each time Mark did a terrific job with very little discomfort compared to the "old school" dentists I used to have. I'm also having fewer dental problems overall since I started with Mark 12 years ago. Our two daughters also began seeing Dr. Hickmott when they were about 4 years old, I think. Our kids love going to Dr. Hickmott. Overall, a really good dentist. ----------------------------- As to what the other reviewers said: The "water pick" that two reviewers mentioned is NOT a water pick at all. It is a high pressure cleaner that blasts very tiny sodium particles, removing the plaque without manually scraping of your teeth. It is very effective and frankly much better for your teeth than scraping the enamel with a metal scraper. The scraping method is cheaper and maybe that is why other dentists still use it. Mark also does a polish after the cleaning. I cannot believe Mark would do shoddy work, I have never had a problem with his work and neither has anyone in our family. As I said before my dental issues have actually decreased since I chose Dr. Hickmott as my dentist. In addition, my children are checked by their ortodontist who said their teeth are well maintained. ----------- Mark also uses a very safe x-ray machine, and the images come up on a computer screen right in front of you. He can show you what he sees in the x-rays and the whole process is very fast. The office is very very nice and convenient, with plenty of parking. The staff is terrific, they handle insurance, billing, and scheduling very professionally. read more

I had an implant done in August 2014 which went very smoothly. But what I had problem with was accounting. They over charged me by $ 269 and kept sending me bills for another $ 221. Meanwhile I spoke to my insurance company and they assured me that I had paid way more than I should have. Finally, it has been settled and they did send me back a check for $ 269. We have been seeing Dr. Hickmott for 10+ years. They are good but one needs to be vigilant and make sure you are correctly charged. read more

This place is wonderful, terrific staff and Mark Hickmott (there is more than one Dentist at this location) is amazing -- personable, knows his stuff, and demonstrates he cares about his work and patients. You need an appointment, and virtually every appointment I have had I got in at my appointed time, or very close to it. I saw one bad review here which just stunned me. I have been going to Courtyard Dental for many years and I cannot believe we are talking about the same place. Said they didn't see much of the dentist, but the dentist is the one that cleans your teeth -- most other places have an assistant to do that. This Is A Great Office, the staff is impeccable, I just brought my 2 & 3 year old in for their first visit (ever) and they made fun and exciting, believe it or not got them to clean brush and polish their teeth. The dentist is fine. It's the office staff that is horrible. I have called 5, yes 5 times, about a billing error. It's still not fixed. It's been ten months. And on top of that, the staff is so rude about it. When we have determined beyond any reasonable doubt, it is completely their fault. I have orchestrated two joint phone calls with BCBS and Courtyard Dental. The latest is Courtyard cashed the check and BCBS provided the check number and EOB, yet Courtyard has "no record of receiving it." Plus, according to their preferred provider agreement they are not to bill two codes, which they billed both. I'm at a loss. I'm so frustrated with it- especially with the lack of competence within Courtyard Dental. read more

Can I get a hip hip hooray for the dentist! After too many years without one my sister in law recommended Courtyard Dental. The dentists and assistants are really friendly and professional. They use the hyrdopick thingy (not really sure what it's called) to clean your teeth and it hurts like hell the first time. Painful but effective. Not nearly as bad the next time around. They've also been really flexible with my husband's and my schedules since for both of us they are constantly changing. read more

Stay away from this practice ! Rude office staff. While I was in the waiting room, another patient was there because her crown that had just been applied by Dr Hickmont had just fallen off ! I was there for a second option about getting luminars/ veneers . He did not look in my mouth or take X-rays . He tried to sell me braces that they offer at their office and a at home whitening kit. When I refused , he said my mouth was fine and I didn't need to do anything . Scary stuff! read more

We've been going to Dr. Hickmont for over 10 years. It has always been a good experience. He does not use high pressure sales techniques and only does the work that is necessary. When needed he will refer to specialists outside his office, but does have some specialist working with him. The only negative that I see is that his office staff does seem to rotate often. My 9 year old son chipped a decent size piece of his permanent front tooth off at school. I called Courtyard Dental right away and Dr. Hickmott was able to get us in within an hour. He was so gentle and reassuring to both my son and myself that he could make the tooth look like nothing happened. He and the entire staff were so nice, understanding and the work by Dr. Hickmott was outstanding. You could not tell anything had happened to his tooth when the work was complete. My son was pleased that the procedure was very fast and he had no pain at all. The other thing that I appreciate about their staff is they always show me my out of pocket cost after insurance payment before any work is done so there are no surprises. Tiffany, one of the front office girls, is always a pleasure to see, she demonstrates what ideal customer service is supposed to be. Along with the rest of the staff who couldn't be any more helpful and nice people. You can tell that the staff enjoy their work. Now Dr. Lolis THE BEST. I had to get a crown on my front tooth and I didn't know what to expect. Dr Hickmott listened as I cried to him, told me not to worry and got to work. End product is priceless . It's gorgeous and looks very natural. I literally cried when he showed me in the mirror. Dr Hickmott is so unbelievably nice and gentle I just wish I found him and his office years ago.
