We tried the new Cousins sub shop on Michigan Road. The company is based out of Wisconsin and was family originated. Their slogan relates to having higher quality ingredients. This new location was tricky getting to as you have to pass by it and then maneuver potholes and approach from the rear. There are several stores that looked alike, so we had to drive back around front, dodging construction to find. They have a drive-they window for picking up orders or eat-in dining room. They also have a patio that will be nice during warmer weather. The dining room is new, clean and interesting. We were comfortable during our short stay. The clerks were really nice, helpful and anxious to serve us. Reginald (Reg) offered suggestions. Subs averaged around $8 and are pretty big. You order up at the counter then they bring the food to your table. I had the Tuna with lettuce and tomato, served cold. The roll is really good and fresh without being too much bread. I like that the sandwich was a little chewy. The tuna salad was ok, perhaps a little drier than I like. The lettuce and tomato were fresh and herb topping a nice touch. I'd order it again. My husband had the Philly (Reg's suggestion). He had the sandwich hot, so the cheese was nice and melted. The steak was really good and the fillings were generous. We also shared an order of fries. The fries are really good, thinner cut and crispy. Bronze came over and checked on us. The staff is eager to please. We felt welcome. We had 5 star service for a chain restaurant. I ordered the Italian Special on multi-grain. It came with ham, bologna, salami, provolone, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, oregano and oil. It was $8.99 for a 7.5 inch. It was excellent. The bread was fresh and it was loaded with ingredients. My wife got the Hot Club for the same price. It was very good as well. They have Coke products, which we love! We got the fries with cheese and they were very good. We would recommend. All thus said, the customer service here was outstanding! Angel was our server and she went above and beyond. Four specific items support this comment: 1. She greeted us when arrived and thanked us when we left. 2. We ordered the food To Go but we sat at a table. She came over and asked if we wanted the food on a tray or in a bag. Very observant and considerate on her part. 3. I could not figure out how to order cheese on the fries in their mobile app. She initially did not know either. But while we were eating, Angel researched the issue and came back to our table a second time to show us what she found out... so we knew the next time. Very diligent of her! 4. We observed another customer with a To Go order. When the order was ready, Angel walked out from behind the counter and hand delivered the food to him. Others would have just called the customer's name and had the customer walk up. Very thoughtful of Angel! Angel told us she had only worked at Cousins a short time. But she was a seasoned pro. She was knowledgeable of the menu and made suggestions. We will definitely return to Cousins. And, no, we had never met (or knew of) Angel until we arrived for lunch! . Searching for new and hot I ran across Cousins Subs. I thought the menu was a step up from Subway and Jimmy John's with fries and cheese curds. Chips just don't cut it for a side. We ordered off the self-serve kiosk. Thought that would be easier to see sandwich ingredients and be able to delete things we didn't want like onion and tomato. I got the Pepperoni Melt with a side of cheese curds and a reg drink. The sub was decent size and had a good amount of meat. I did expect the sub to be hot or at least warm since it was a melt but it was cold. May have missed that button on the kiosk. Less bread than subway. Sub bun much like Jimmy John's. The cheese curds were the best part. I don't know if they are a proprietary product for the company or just basic frozen bagged product. Husband got the Steak Cheese Steak Sub. Again it was not hot or warm. I think it's an expectation that cheese steak is a hot sandwich. He got fries as a side. Much better than just chips but nothing special. The end of the meal he decided to get a chocolate shake and cookies. The shake was a hand blended shake not from a machine. It was really good. The cookies were good but again nothing special. Over all food was good not great. Especially not close to 40$ worth. They also ask for a tip on the kiosk. Just doing your job is not tip worthy. And I know they get paid well above servers wage. If you order a Reuben without thousand island or rye bread is it still a Reuben? Probably not. So I ordered a Reuben at Cousin's brand new NW Indy location with a pretzel bun and swap of thousand island with deli mustard. I'm calling it "The Pastreli." Or "Reuben 2.0?" It's my new favorite sandwich. Generous pastrami and just enough deli mustard with neutralized sauerkraut for texture is a mess but it's great. I ordered their fries which are like a tastier, less-salty version of McDonald's shoestring fries. Another thing I love is their Gen 3 freestyle machine. This is a no-brainer for a beverage space that once provided 6 options can now give you dozens. Caffeine free Diet Coke please! I got the pepperoni melt with cheese curds and loved them both. The pepperoni melt hit the spot and the onions were so tasty. The cheese curds were some of the best I've ever had!! I came to try out Cousins Subs since it came back to Indianapolis. Most people don't realize that Cousins Subs used to be here over 15 years ago, but it closed for some reason, but anywhere, welcome back! Might I say Cousins Subs is like the baby of Culver's and Subway. Milkshakes, cheese curds, they have pretzel bread to put your sub sandwiches on, and also the sandwiches can be cold cuts or heated. I went inside to order my food, but they also had a drive-thru option. Upon entering, I was greeted by staff, and a staff member was nice enough to make suggestions of what to eat on their menu. The lunch rush was just over, and I could tell from some of the tables still being dirty with leftover crumbs from previous patrons. I ordered the Sub in a Bowl, which is basically a salad. I got the Italian Special, which has cappacolla ham, coteghino bologna, Genoa salami, provolone cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, salt, oregano & oil; but I asked for no onions. I also added cucumbers and black olives since I was getting a salad. All of these toppings were placed over a spring mix that I wasn't too much of a fan. I also got a side of fries that ended up being cold by the time I got my order. It took over 20 minutes to get a salad, and it was not busy at all, and it let me know that those fries had been sitting for a while. My salad was pretty good. I just did not like the spring mix. I would order it again, but just get lettuce. This is not Jimmy John's, so don't expect freakishly fast service. Hopefully, with time, the speed of food availability will improve. I'll give them another try, but next time, I'll try the curds and an actual sub. read more

I visited the recently opened Cousins Subs on Indy's northwest side and selected the Philly sub that was recommended by our friendly sandwich chef. Sorry about the picture ... I could not wait! This sandwich was very delicious and filling. The accompanying fries were straight cut and the portion generous enough to share with my wife, also evidenced by the picture. The fries were very good. My husband and I are huge sandwich eaters so the second we read about Cousins, we had to get in there to try a sub. It also helps that they were advertising cheese curds. Can't beat a great cheese curd and these were definitely that! Crisp outer coating, chewy, squeaky cheese, salty and delicious. Highly recommend! An employee was kind enough to both bring us our food and ask us if we'd like ranch or marinara to go with the curds. Went for both and while it was tasty, these are good enough to eat on their own. But onto the sandwiches! Which were wonderful. We grabbed a BLT and pepperoni melt (pepperoni + ham). One of us tried the Asiago bread and the one of us tried the herb bread. Honestly, we'd go back for the bread alone. It was so flavorful! A little crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. I personally say that herb bread is my winner but I could see the cheese bread being great for a warm sandwich. The toppings were fabulous too! Smoky bacon, crisp veggies, and I loved the pepper relish. It's less spicy than the relish at Jersey's Mikes but still delectable. The hubs said pepperoni + ham was a great combo, kinda it's own version of an Italian. The actual Italian comes with bologna and kinda scared him off but since they've proved their chops, he is definitely willing to try it in the future. Tried a shake. It was alright, pretty standard for a shake, maybe a bit loose/melted. Eager to try the floats in the future. The fries were tasty but a little flimsy. We did eat in. Very open space, a bit of an industrial feel, good lighting and table space. There are tables outdoors but it was too gray/wet for us at the time. Would be a nice place to sit on future occasions. There is also a drive thru so can't wait to try that in the future if we just want to get through quick. Final word, super happy with this place and already eager to go back to try more sandwiches. Just drove by and saw the "we're open" sign. We know you are open...your food just isn't good. I've been here twice and both were lackluster experiences. The last time it was $50 for two subs, two sides, and two drinks. The subs were BLTs and had maybe two strips of bacon on them. It was mostly bread with very little toppings at all. The cheese fries were cold and floppy...and the cheese curds tasted like old oil. We also waited over ten minutes despite being the only customers there. The lettuce was turning red, the turkey tasted weird, and overall I only took two bites before I called it quits. This is tough, because as a Milwaukee native I really want this place to be good, as Cousins is hands down my favorite sandwich shop, bar none! But this place doesn't make the sandwiches like they do in Milwaukee. I've held back my review for this reason. They're not consistent, and they just can't seem to figure it out. I was the first customer when they officially opened and I keep coming back with the hopes that someone will get the training they need, but no. I usually leave disappointed, and feeling like I wasted my money. Cousins just can't seem to make it work outside of Milwaukee because the training doesn't seem to translate, and that's what makes a chain, a chain. The exact same taste, look and feel, no matter which one you go to. This isn't achieved here. I used to recommend my friends and family to go but not anymore. I love a good Italian sub, especially if it has good bread so I was excited to try this new spot. My understanding is that it is part of a chain from Wisconsin, so it makese sense that they serve the amazing Sprecher's root beer--an amazing experience unto itself, especially if you have it in Wisconsin where it's treated like a fine craft beer. Anyway, I chose the grilled Italian sub with everything. It had wonderful flavor but I was surprised that only the meat inside the sandwich was heated, the bread was not. I was informed later that you can ask for your bread to be warmed up. That seems a little unnecessary to me when I order a grilled sandwich, but I will say that the bread was delicious. The service was very efficient, though (naturally) the sandwich did take a few minutes to prepare. Prices are reasonable. Having them growing up it was nice to have that here when I relocated to Indiana, cousins sadly closed around 2000 and I only get it if I go to Wisconsin, but no more! The subs are unbelievable! This is by far the best sub in all the land! The cheese curds are exactly what they should be, these are real Wisconsin curds. They are like pillows in your mouth, when you have these you'll know you are having real curds! Lots of options to choose from with the hot subs being big and bountiful! My favorite is the cold Italian, just can't go wrong with this perfect sub. The shakes are good, soup as well. I'm so happy that cousins subs have returned, hopefully more around the city are coming? Sorry do not see all the hype with this sub shop. First of all way to expensive for what you get. Subway and Jimmy John's and Jersey Mikes are way better! Not much meat on the subs . Anyway, it was my first time there and the food was great! I had the Italian sub with the hot pepper relish and fries. I had to pull forward and wait for my fries.... Not long and worth the wait because they were pipping hot! The staff is the best. The cashier was very patient especially when I informed her I was new to the restaurant and the person who delivered my food took the time to make sure I had everything I needed. Very disappointing. We were initially excited to try after receiving some coupons in a flyer and researching their menu. Visited for carry out around 4 pm on a Saturday. Very few patrons were dining in, a family of four, no one in line and the tables that were empty were still dirty from previous patrons. After ordering, waited 30 minutes for our food (called home to clarify their order at 1620 & they called as leaving at 1651). Extremely disappointed with the turkey cheese sub on Italian bread. The cheese was extra at 1.19. This sandwich shown in photos cost $9.18. The French fries were cold and soggy. My double steak cheese salad was missing the onions, tomatoes, & Italian dressing. I had very few black olives, green peppers and several cucumbers. (I added black olives, green peppers, & cucumbers). The steak did have very good flavor but I was missing half my salad. The other sub did have good flavor but not enough meat or veggies as it was mostly bread with every bite. The salad on the sub was cheap, shredded iceberg lettuce, not leaf lettuce. The cheese curds were plain and a small portion for the cost. Culver's has better cheese curds for less $$$. The shakes had good flavor but were melted as they were done 20 minutes before the food was done. Very poor timing on a carry out order to have shakes ready to sit and melt before the rest of the order was even near to being ready. We will not be patrons of this "glorified" sub shop. read more
