Even from the outside, it was incredibly impressive and much larger than I expected. It was really cool to see such an iconic stadium in person. Whether you're a football fan or just appreciate seeing famous landmarks, it's definitely worth a quick stop if you're in the area. We're glad we took a few minutes to check it out!

It was magical attending my first ever Ohio State game here at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, OH. For a…read more7:30pm primetime game in early October, I got to watch the defending national champion and #1 ranked Buckeyes play against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Just standing in front of Ohio Stadium was a surreal feeling. Affectionately known as "The Horseshoe", it is an iconic landmark in college football. Opened in 1922, fast forward 100 years later and the stadium is still in terrific condition. Capacity says 102,780 yet towards the end of the 3rd quarter, an announcement was made over the loudspeakers that attendance reached 105,000 for this game. Just an incredible number! It's like...the entire city of Columbus, OH comes together and celebrates Ohio State football and their rich heritage and gridiron success on Saturday gamedays. I purchased my ticket about 1 week ahead of time on TickPick and paid $150 (all included) for a seat in Section 26C and Row 40, near the top of the visiting side stands. The seat was parallel to the 30-yard line and views were unobstructed. I had no complaints about sitting too high up. My only issue was the timing of buying my ticket. When re-checking prices the day of the game, I realized had I waited and done more price discovery, similar seats in my section were going for just $40. Ouch! I paid way too much, lol. But still, for being a lifelong college football fan, no real price mattered in the end. It's about having memories that are priceless. In fact, just the week prior to this Ohio State game, I attended a "Whiteout Game" at Penn State and paid $450 for a seat. Ohio Stadium allows fans to enter through the gates 2 full hours before kickoff. During that time, I walked around the exterior of the stadium. My best photos came from the backside entrance near the tennis courts. Yeah, if you walk towards the endzone side of "the horseshoe", you'll discover tennis courts and if you keep walking behind the courts, you'll notice Ohio Stadium in the background and in my opinion, it's worthy of a picture. Off to the side of the tennis courts is a cool Ohio Statue statue that fans were taking photos in front of. It said..."The Incomparable Script Ohio, Established 1936". For this 7:30pm game, Ohio State's team entrance onto the field was electric. Fireworks shot out from behind the scoreboard like a cannon and made for an incredibly colorful display in the sky with the fading sunset. Every time Ohio State scored a touchdown, more shooting fireworks lit up the night. Also behind the stadium scoreboard were 2 residential towers lit up in red. Not sure if these red towers shine every evening or just for Ohio State games. It was cool looking nonetheless. Ohio State dominated the game from start to finish. They defeated Minnesota 42 -3, so by the time the 4th quarter started, half the stadium was empty. I stayed until the end regardless. Who knows when I'll be able to return to Columbus for another game, so I savored every moment. Finally, I must give total credit to Ohio State's band. They were fantastic. Throughout the game they played the school's signature song..."Hang On Sloopy", a tradition since 1965 made famous by The McCoys. After the game was completed, the band continued playing Hang On Sloopy as they marched out of Ohio Stadium, ending another Ohio State game in classic fashion. Overall, it was a true joy to visit Ohio Stadium and watch the Buckeyes play football in primetime. Long been a To-Do List sports goal of mine, sitting beside 105,000 fans rooting for Ohio State was an indescribable feeling that every college football fan should experience. Thanks for having me Buckeyes.

The arena has true character with tons and tons of black and white photographs from many Ohio State sports dynasties from the past I remember when the Ohio State Buckeyes men's basketball played here under coach Fred Taylor, Eldon Miller, Gary Williams,. The Value City Arena is the new home and is a great place, but it just lacks the character of St. John Arena. (which is understandable) I've seen many concerts at St. John Arena as well, and there really is not a bad seat in the house, based upon the seating arrangements. The most popular event still held at the arena is the Skull Session, the pep rally before football games. Two hours prior to kickoff of the football game, The Ohio State University Marching Band performs Buckeye favorites, and the players, cheerleaders and coaches speak to the crowd. I really hope that the university does not replace or demolish this wonderful piece of history, in Columbus.

The stadium has bleachers, the middle section of which have chair backs. There are clean restrooms and a concession area selling snacks like nachos and popcorn. On our recent visit, we went to a Men's Soccer Game, and it was a great experience. There is plenty of seating, and a large color screen showing the action on the field. Kids can get close to the tunnel where the athletes go through and give them high fives when they are heading into the locker rooms at halftime. Brutus and two Crew Cats were in attendance, walking around and sitting down to fans, sliding down banisters, and giving hugs and high fives. Very fun!

Everybody is always friendly - they have a solid staff, no complaints. Is it clean? Not really. Is it loud? Deafeningly so. Are you gonna get beat up in the pit? Probably. Can you hear well basically anywhere in the venue? For sure. I have to get strategic with where j stand if j want to see, but I'm 5' tall so I'm used to that. If you're lucky enough to sit upstairs, that's the best view but it's not always open. From The Strokes to GWAR, the Newport has never let me down. Parking sort of sucks since it's across the street from OSU. I always ride share, but I'm sure there's a parking garage nearby. Since that was 10+ years ago, obviously lots of things have changed. I do love the wooden interior. It has more of a classic tavern feel than most of the newer/more cheaply-built bars in the campus area. It has high ceilings and two main rooms, the one you walk into with the bar, and another to the right with a small stage and dance floor/high top tables. The first room has 2 pool tables, which is why I have visited more recently when some of my other go-to pool spots are too busy. Drinks are on the cheap side, with most of your basic options but this is not a spot to expect a specialty cocktail or a super wide variety of spirits. It's not a bad spot for pitchers of beer or your basic shots and mixed drinks. I would definitely rate Ruby higher because I've had great experiences there, but the service lately has been hit or miss. The last time the bartenders refused to change the music to a different channel, insisting on playing country and encouraging us to buy each song we wanted via touch tunes. On this same visit, the staff seemed super unfriendly serving drinks, and another staff member was mopping the floor while customers were still ordering drinks at around 10:30 on a Friday night. I understand that this place tends to close when customers are gone toward the end of the night, but it seemed like the staff really didnt want anyone to be there. I wouldn't think ownership would want staff to be pushing paying customers out on one of the busiest nights for bars. I'm sure I'll be back at some point, but if I go in to check if there's a pool table open and notice any of those same staff members from the last time, I might just head home.

That creaky metal structure actually is comforting, since you don't feel like you're in a historical monument like Ohio Stadium and can relax a little. The expansion of the paved parking area is much appreciated, but the fairgrounds in general is going to need to figure out some way of getting cars in and out faster as the number of large events continues to grow. Aside from the understandable frustration it causes for people attending events, it also clogs up 71 and campus area surface roads. Just arrive early and be patient - and probably hit the restroom on your way out in case exiting the parking lot takes longer than the event you attended.
