Butch cares about people and is incredibly knowlegable, patient, and wants to help kids and adults experience the hobbies he represents, collecting model cars, building car and aircraft models RC repairs etc. He's a man of real character, honest, honorable. Cool store to visit. Looks like they've got lots of stuff for model airplanes, trucks, cars, RC cars, etc. If you've ever been curious about it or picking up a new hobby then definitely take a stop by. Their hours can vary, but just call the number on the door If you aren't sure. The owner was there when we stopped by and he was very friendly and informative. I went here for the first time on a Tuesday afternoon in mid-May. I never knew about this place, but happened to stumble upon it while driving. The store isn't that big. Butch, the ower was very nice, so I'll give 3 stars for that, but then, we were the only customers in the place, so employees should be nice especially if we're the only ones in there. I purchased a few magazines. Unfortunately, this store didn't carry the type of items I was looking for which were plane models. read more

I went there to have a receiver installed and to set it up for my 1/5 scale R/C truck transmitter. The owner operator ( Butch) did it for me right there on the spot. He was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful in setting me up. He is honest and his prices are very reasonable. Plenty of FREE parking in the back. This is my go to shop from now on. I decided to use my 22 year old R/C nitro truck after a 16 year hiatus. I was worried that after not using it for such a long time, the motor would have problems. I took it to Butch's Covina Hobby Shop (A mom & pop shop) for a service. He brought my truck back to life! He replaced the fuel lines, readjusted the suspension system, and retuned the motor. The cost of his service was reasonable. I would definitely recommend this shop for anything R/C related. read more

Love helicopters and planes. This place does have some really nice aircraft...etc... We walked in and the guy running the place came inside from smoking a cigarette outside. We asked him a few questions but he acted like he didn't want to help us. I asked about if he had any helicopters.. Literally could not be happier with the great customer service and communication. I don't know much about the race cars just that my husband brought home a magazine from here and wanted one for Christmas. I figured I could wait a few days before and just go pick up. To my surprise they were sold out and were expecting a four the day, yes Christmas Eve, but unsure of delivery time. The wife took my name and number ensuring me they'd call me to pick up once delivered. True to their word, they called me and I made my husbands Christmas that much better. Price for this item was $150 dollars less then a hobby shop in West Covina. Batteries and charger are sold separately but that is the way the manufacturer has it not the store. I think people should realize some hobbies can be expensive and be prepared for additional cost. read more

What a awesome hobby shop. I loved the old school feel of the place and the real cool vintage RC planes hanging from the ceiling. I am a little perplexed about all the bad reviews on this shop. Both employees greeted me and were very friendly and offered assistance, with all the different products that I was checking out. (Models, Drones, and RC trucks) I ended up dropping just shy of $300, and am glad I chose to walk in this store. This hobby shop is ancient--some of the stuff in there looks as if it hasn't been moved since opening day! Years of accumulation can be a good thing, though, because you're sure to find what you're looking for. Truly the most disappointing customer experience I've ever had! Let me start off by saying don't waste your time patronizing this pathetic excuse for a hobby store. There's absolutely nothing worth purchasing and the staff couldn't be more clueless not only re products, but life in general. The gentleman that work at this store are the absolute definition of obtuse. First, both employees are somewhere in their 40s or 50s and have worked at this location for 5+ years, if not much...much longer. Neither of them appear to have any sort of formal education, which I guess is obvious given their age and career choice. It's apparent these two little boys have never gown up and have not intention on doing so anytime soon. Now let's get down to my story. I brought in my store credit that was clearly in the amount of $58 and change. The overweight gentleman outright refused to honor the credit and stated he was only willing to settle for $20 in store merchandise. I handed him the credit and asked for an explanation wherein he proceeded to rip up the credit and threaten to pull a gun if I didn't leave his store. At this time the manager came over and stated to grab something worth $20 and leave the store. Regardless, I left the store and bestowed a little wisdom re threatening others with a gun. It's probably one of the stupidest things you could ever do especially in today's age where you never know who's packing. I proceeded two blocks down the street and walked into Covina PD to explain the entire situation. DO NOT go this store and PLEASE DO NOT bring your children anywhere around this loose cannon. He's unpredictable with clearly nothing to live for. He's an unemployable ticking time bomb that we can only hope will wither away without causing harm to anyone else. read more

Ordered Traxxas car and two batteries requested that it be available the following week I am now 4 weeks past initial purchase I have one car and one battery and missing one battery was going to purchase online but like to support small businesses they informed me they could have it the following day or two days after and now I am chasing them to finish the order ordered parts from Traxxas and got them within 5 days so now I regret not purchasing it straight from Traxxas if they have what you need in stock then okay place to do business with but if they are going to order it I would advise you to go elsewhere read more

Had a great experience with the guys at Covina Hobby shop. Was at another local hobby store in there area the guys there said it would them 1 week to fix my RC car ( A SIMPLE FIX) after 3 days of nothing being done and was told it would be ANOTHER WEEK.... frustrated I decide to take my car and called the Covina hobby they said bring it on we will take a look at it for you and give you an estimate of cost and time.. Walked in was greeted nicely and Jack at the counter took me over helpedand went right to work on it. Walked out feeling confident, went home ate dinner and BAMMM phone rings its Jack says a gear was damaged and it would be 4.99 more. I said no problem 20 min later BAMMM! Phone rings its JACK! S#itty service from these guys!! They did an incomplete job at reaparing my sons rc truck!! I would strongly recomend you find another hobby shop for your repair needs! The one older guy was trying to keep my truck if i didnt pay for other repairs. 80.00 for a tune and still wanted 30.00 more after. Yeah right!! Plenty of other shops out there!! Dont get ripped off by this shop. It use to be a better shop in the old days when i would take my cars and trucks but its gone down hill. I dont mind paying for good quality service but i will never come back again! I have 10 nitro rc cars and trucks and they lost my business on all of them. I travel a lot and make it a point to look up, visit and purchase a model from the few existing hobby shops left. I was in Covina and stumbled on this gem. The owner or son of the owner was just cool. We talked models, innovation (Verlinden and such). The selection in the shop would easily satisfy RC and modelers alike. I ended up buying 6 Tamiya, Dragon models and 6 magazines AFTER the owner volunteered to ship my purchase! (I live in Nor Cal) Who does that anymore? Anyway, got my stuff today, intact, no issues ready to add to my collection of models, er, ah like 500 now :) Covina Hobby shop rocks, stop buying online and support your local hobby shops. read more

This hobby shop sucks. Doesn't believ in customer service. Throws money around because customer wasn't paying attention. Guy says he will call with updates and never does. Truck was dropped off on 03/19/09 and went to check up on status on 03/31/09 was given an attitude and was told here. Take your truck back, I don't need this shit. Avoid. Wish I could give 0 stars. I walked in to check to see if they had rubber masking for painting a model. 2 men in there working behind the counter on a project. Not one of them looked up to offer assistance or acknowledge me. Stood there looking at their dusty limited paint bottle display for a few minutes. Still no help until I walked directly in front of one who reluctantly offered help as if I was a bother. I just walked out. I should of read the other reviews before wasting my time. This place offers terrible service. They are not helpful at, and don't even bother trying to ask for help or they will make you feel like you are bothering them. They hide behind the counter or in the back and the only time they will even think about helping you is if you hold a credit card or cash out. Terrible customer service! I would give negative stars if possible, but Yelp forces the minimum of one star. Covina Hobby Shop provided me with terrible customer service. I was talking with one of their employees about a battery for my car and he completely left me hanging to sell a car to another customer. They are all about making a sale. Their prices are very high compared to other hobby shops. I will never return to Covina Hobby Shop again.
