The food and service were great! I was dismayed to discover, however, that even dining in, the food is served on a disposable plastic plate with a disposable plastic fork, and the water came in a styrofoam cup that says "An average weight, paper hot cup with a cardboard sleeve generates 379% more solid waste by weight than a comparable foam cup." As if the same foam cup doesn't produce more waste by volume for and as if the styrofoam won't continue to occupy that same volume of space long after the paper cup degrades. The blatant disregard for the health of our environment and dissemination of anti-environmental propaganda will keep me from from returning. It's too bad. As a newcomer I'm looking for good places to frequent and I did appreciate the service and good food. read more

Holy cow! If you are a bovine lover, you need to check this place out. We were walking around New Bern on a warm Sunday afternoon and were looking for a coffee shop to get some refreshments. We stumbled upon Cow Cafe and were happy to find that they were open until 5. Cow Cafe serves sandwiches and light fare and then specializes in ice cream. We had just eaten so I did not have ice cream yet their selection of flavor sand ice cream splits is quite tempting. There are stuffed cows, pictures, moooovies and all kinds of cow memorabilia inside the store. They have tables and seating and you order at the ice cream counter. I only had a Pepsi (when in New Bern ) and my friend sampled their ice cream. They also serve coffee. This adorable little cafe is absolutely delicious and reasonably-priced. I had a delectable Greek Salad - their "Moo-ziki" dressing was perfect and the chicken was seasoned just right. This place is just FUN! What a great concept to have a play area for the kiddos and tables for the adults to eat and watch the children. It wasn't crowded when we went and I'm sure that made for an even better experience. I had the BBQ sandwich which was good with a little heat and perfect vinegar ratio. Favorite icecream in town! I became totally addicted to the icecream flavor, pumpkin pie, last year. It is sooo good! This year I called to know when it was coming out and was there buying quarts every 3 days. I highly recommend the Peppermint Bark that is only at Christmastime, strawberry, cookies n' cream, and Cowpucchino Fudge. Also, I've tried the cheese steak, which was really good. The meatball sub is surprisingly great. And the hot dogs are really good! Wonderful staff, especially Mili and Tammy that work mostly nights when I go, and Mr. Green is a hands-on outstanding boss that is always present in his shop. Super friendly and patient staff. The ice cream was great (4-5 stars). They make it on site. Very nice. The food was pretty good but perhaps a little over-priced for what you get. The sides that come with the sandwiches are so small you will get two bites and you are done. Definitely an interesting joint in a little town called New Bern. The decor will interest and astound you to an extend that will make you pause and look around before you head for your ice cream. We had sandwiches, ice creams and shakes from here. The chicken salad sandwich was average. I tasted the Black Walnut, Udder Pecan, Cookie Monster, Almond Amaretto and Pistachio. I felt the Black Walnut was a bit too sweet for my liking. However, they are a good choice if you are doing shakes as it brings the sweetness down by a noticeable notch. I had the udder pecan ice cream which I found to be best of the ones that I had tasted. They do have a nice kids party lounge at the back of the cafe. On both our visits, we saw different parties celebrating birthdays. The service was cordial and prompt with our orders. If you are not an ice cream person, stop by here for the decor for the least. Bottom line: Good ice creams, colorful interesting decor and good service. Tip: Locals claim their apple pie are the best. We didn't get a chance to try them. read more

We've been enjoying Cow Cafe since 2004. Their ice cream is phenomenal. Homemade, creative flavors and super creamy. Their lunch selection is good. Not sure if they always have their tomato basil soup - but it is great! If there's one area that could use improvement, its customer service. It's not bad, but it could be a bit lighter/more welcoming. Our favorites are their seasonal flavors of pumpkin pie and eggnog. Try them as milkshakes. YUM! We highly recommend Cow Cafe. read more

This was a place we found via Yelp and the reviews were pretty spot on. Fun place for families, with loaded hot dogs complete with cole slaw, chili, and cheese - the Cuban sandwich was great too. Kids hot dog meal with chocolate milk for 3 and change. We enjoyed the Nutella ice cream for dessert - just wish the ice cream came with free refills . Cool collectors atmosphere with all the cow memorabilia you could ever imagine. Kids loved the train traveling around the ceiling in the dining room. Friendly staff. read more

My wife and I went to New Bern for a short day trip. As we had not eaten, we searched for a nearby downtown restaurant Other reviewers on a different review site RAVED about this place, and since I like quirky, I thought--why not. The exterior of the place is adorable, and the interior is just as cute. We loved watching the train go around the dining area. But, from the moment we tried to order, I knew this MIGHT have been a bad decision. There are two registers--one over by the scoop ice cream, and one on the other side. But when I went to the other side, I was told that's where we order Ice Cream only. When I explained we wanted to eat a meal, the young girl (one of the few awesome workers there btw) acted surprised, but grabbed me two menus. Why they have menus when no one comes to take your lunch/dinner order, I do not know. They should just put it up on a board behind the counter. Anyway, we order our food, and it comes out. For the money charged, the portions were rather small. My wife had the grilled cheese and soup of the day. We were quickly informed that they had no soup. So, I inquired what she should get instead. We were told she could have chili. (I could have sworn Chili was a soup.) I ordered the Down East BBQ Plate. This is touted as a DINNER plate. Food came out--two TINY cups for my sides. And a fistful of BBQ. And they forgot my bread. I remind her that it is supposed to come with Cuban bread toast. She says she will get it. Brings me (I am not exaggerating) two cracker size pieces of what appears to be flatbread. Now, this same bread is used on their 'Clucking Pig" and in their advertised photos, that bread is thick and hearty. These toasted pieces looked like that last slice in the bag of loaf bread that no one wants. This was NOT a dinner sized meal--not even for a child. My wife's chili was equivalent to an individual size side at KFC/Bojangles. It was very small. And her grilled cheese was soggy. We ate, all the while noting that we would probably need to eat again later that evening. We decided to get dessert instead, trying to get full. The desserts were plentiful and delicious. This is why they received 2-stars. My wife later informed me that she was praying the young man working would not make our order. She witnessed him wiping snot from his nose and then NOT washing his hands. All the workers, save for the young African-American teen and the older Caucasian woman just seemed LOST. They ran out of sweet tea an hour before closing and just did not make more. I say all this to note--that if I eat bad food--it takes my body a VERY short time to reject it. And it did. My wife and I spent the rest of last night extremely ill, and that was the only food we ate yesterday. I look at Yelp today, and find out that there were so many other places we could have eaten, and it makes me sad. We try very hard to frequent local establishments when we go out of town, but this just was an awful experience. If you have small children and want an exciting place for them-this may well be it. But stick to the ice cream, and make sure they wash their hands. read more

This place has been one of my favorites since I was a kid and their hot dogs are still the best in town as far as I'm concerned! Cow Cafe...not a burger in sight, which is kind of odd not to see on the menu. I got the chicken wrap, which was pretty good. Could have used another slice of turkey and bacon, because it was mostly lettuce, but overall it was tasty. The kids hotdog was awful. My kid wouldn't eat it, neither would my husband, who usually eats my kids leftovers. The chicken quesadilla is what my husband ordered and was sadly terrible as well. It was mainly bland mushy beans in an orange tortilla. Maybe we missed out on what this Cafe is known for, their ice cream, which we did not order. It's a cute concept and you can tell it was once really cute. We go there a few x a year for the cow factor for the kids. however, it's kinda dirty and the play area isn't somewhere I'd really spend time w/the kids at. The last time we were there, the older man was really gruff and yelling out orders for people and acted like he couldn't care less. There is a line to get food often and when you get up to the counter, a lot of times the customer service is lacking and almost rude. The food really isn't that great - stick to the ice cream. It needs a makeover and for the people who work there to have nicer attitudes. I prefer going to Sweet Spot in Emerald Isle, as it's cute too, but very clean and they are always happy to see us. read more

There's a curio full of cow nick nacks, along with for sake cow items and a window display of a moving cow. For eats, they have a few grill menu items like grilled cheese and a Cuban sandwich.
