I purchased products from their website and was charged the following day. That was over a month ago. They have not responded to my email inquiries, and they do not have a phone number or address anywhere on their website. Honestly, that should have been enough to keep me from trying them out, but they were the only ones who carried the product I needed for a good price (another warning sign). Anyway, purchase at your own risk. From other reviews, it sounds like they do fulfill some orders, but I'm one of the unlucky ones whose paid order has simply been ignored. I just purchased a Lighting kit & Backdrop kit from Cowboy Studio. The setup was fairly simple (I had gotten a little confused) but for both kits they were pretty self explanatory! Great product so far, everything was working & quality. I haven't had a chance to leave my lights on for hours to see if they hold well but I'm sure they do! (will re-update this review after I've used them for hours) **update 10/15/16*** it's been a month and I've had no problems with any of my purchases! I love it & need to buy some more backdrops (to get more colors) Robin was very helpful as I am a beginning photographer (4 months in) & had questions about lighting in general! I did not get anything shipped but walking in I was helped within a reasonable amount of time & nothing issued to me was broken. My only (minor) complaint was the kits didn't come with directions. HOWEVER, they do have tutorials for a ton of setups on their youtube channel located on their website! Please keep in mind (as I was told by Robin) this store is moving to a new location (Richardson I believe) so call in before you drive out to make sure they're still located in Allen, TX! I was super excited to order my own lighting kit to do some photos and video work, so when I found CowBoy Studio on Amazon I thought I had hit pay dirt! I picked out one of their kits that came with two lights and a backdrop and ordered it right away. I thought I was safe because most of their kits seem to have around a 4 star average on Amazon, right? Well, I should have read more into the reviews; if I had I would have noticed a bunch of fake 5 star reviews followed by actual real reviews of their products. I special ordered it to arrive in only 3 days so I paid an extra $30 or something (strange, it doesn't actually say how much you pay until later...hmmmm). The kit arrived on time and I was very excited to get started. Sure, this stuff is made cheaply and I figured that much ahead of time. But, what I got...I was not prepared for. The first thing I noticed, I actually barely noticed, which was that one of the extra items I ordered from them was sort of 'thrown' into the box. It's small enough that I almost missed it and it conceivably could have been thrown into the trash with the packaging waste. The next thing I noticed was when I pulled out one of the light stands and it was all scuffed up from being used already. Ugh. The other one was new which led me to a more insidious conclusion: when they get returned items that have been used or whatever, they don't just package them up and offer a discount on a used item, instead they part them out into different kits so that when you get one you might not even notice. Very scummy. (Put one of your used pieces in several different new products and send it out as new!) Then, after I relaxed a little bit and tried to put one of the lights together, I could not figure out why the soft box mount I had did not match the one in the picture. Hmmmmm. No matter how hard i tried, I could not get it to come together and couldn't shake the feeling that something was not right here. What was not right was that the soft box mounts did not match up with the light covers and no amount of messing around with it was going to fix that. They did NOT fit!!!! Good lord. So, I immediately sent them out a few emails to let them know I was not happy and please respond ASAP. Did I get any response? Nope. My advice? Stay away from CowBoy Studios! Rip off read more

Ok, this review is for their online service, rather than their showroom. I am a semi-pro photographer. As such, I really don't have the funds to blow on equipment 90% of the time, yet I still expect results with what I do buy. Here's an inside tip if you have yet to figure this out: Cowboy Studio brand gear is relabeled equipment from China. If you understand this, you won't have any issues. There is an inherent roll of the dice you take when buying cheap Chinese anything, though this is how you get items so heavily discounted. You can easily trick out an entire home studio with 2-4 strobes, triggers/receivers, and backdrops for under 5-700$ Now, for what I've purchased from them, I will say, their triggers and receivers are dicey at best, complete shit at worst. Be careful with these. Their strobes are plenty fine...I've never had a single issue in over 2 years with one and I've ordered 4 of them. Their backdrop stands, and really their stands in general, aren't the highest quality....but they do work. I had my backdrop setup for a shoot a while back when my cat came tearing through the room toppling it. One of the stands broke. The equipment, overall, will get the job done in a pinch, but ultimately will need to be replaced by more reliable gear. Beware of this company! I purchased photography equipment from them and was told that it would be shipped to me within 1-2 days. The company marked the order as shipped 1 day after I placed the order. As time passed by I kept checking the tracking information and the tracking information said it hadn't been shipped. 18 days after I placed my order the tracking information still said that the package had not been shipped. I emailed their customer support and was later told that the product was actually sold out and they didn't know when they would have the product in stock again. This is ridiculous! Issues with this company: 1. They shouldn't be selling products that they don't have in their inventory. Especially products that they don't know when they will have re-stocked. 2. If they do sell a product that is out of stock, then they should contact the customer immediately or cancel the order and issue a refund immediately. Instead they mark the order as shipped, keep the customer's money, and don't ship the product. 3. Their customer support should be apologetic in this situation. Instead they just offered to send me a product that would not work for what I need it for and that is smaller and cheaper than the product that I purchased. Now we won't have out photography equipment for our scheduled photoshoot and I have to try to reschedule with my entire team, models, and photographer. * After all of this happened the company still has the product listed as "In-Stock" and "Ships within 1 to 2 business days." I purchased Photography/Video Portrait Umbrella Continuous Triple Lighting Kit, on Amazon, and it's garbage. As soon as I received the product, I started to put it together and two of the three light socket deals came apart. I made a video of it and uploaded it to Amazon. Luckily I purchased it with Amazon Prime, so I don't have to go through all the issues of trying to return it. The lighting kit is worthless. Do NOT BUY KITS from this company or make a large order with them. They have a return policy which you must say you've read before you buy which says they will not pay for return shipping. Of course, WHO thinks they're going to return something when they decide to buy it? And even if we did, WHO looks up the price for shipping an item back before they buy it? Because I bought a small, umbrella light kit from them before and loved it, I ordered a lighting kit for $235 plus shipping = $260. When it came it was too flimsy and WAY too difficult to set up. Because I didn't check what it would cost to send the kit back to them if I didn't like it, I was not expecting to see that it'll cost me between $50 and $75 to ship it back (I live in CA). Even though it makes sense because it's a 25lb box. I asked if they could pay just half of the shipping for me. Absolutely not. They are completely relying on the fact that you agree to paying for returns before you buy it. So I will be out $50-$75 once I send this back (because I have no room or desire to keep junk in my storage) and I will have nothing to show for that money. As if I threw it down the drain. I purchased a complete studio set, and the quality of their products are not very good. My set traveled all the way to France via DHL(I ordered a 220V) where I have to improvise to solve these quality issues the minute it arrived. Even though I specify a 220V, they sent me the flash for 110V. I was very surprise with the answer of their customer service "you should know this was a 110 V plug", my replay was that at least it should be marked 110V or they should have the courtesy to tell me they do not do this piece in 220V. I really was expecting more from their costumer service. I called to get a replacement, and their refund policy apparently is 7 days. Too Bad for me. Another issue was the melting of one of the lights because by use the the barn doors improperly . My fault, but now The light needs to be replaced. Bottom line, the products are OK if you manipulate in the proper way, for this Cowboy should include full instructions for all their items which at the moment lacks. Over all is not a bad purchase if you are aware of the what quality equipment costs, and If you are going to keep at one location. read more

I ordered a grid softbox from cowboy studios. It said it would be delivered in a week. It didn't. I called cowboy studios and they said it was back ordered to expect a delay. After a month, I called again, still not in stock. Long story short, months passed and several calls I never got the softbox. Finally spoke to someone who said it wasn't in stock and the were not reordering it. They just let people hang, no apology either. They have the worse customer service, they are flat out rude. From what I can tell, this company sells a lot of their items through Amazon and eBay. I made the mistake of buying some lighting from them on Amazon. The transaction was horrible and the product was cheaply built. The company sent me the wrong item, then they made me waste my time calling them every day for over a week just to get a return label. I sent 2 emails to their support email address and never received a reply for either. I asked them on the phone to send me the correct item while I was dealing with the return. I was told that they cannot trust me to send it back, so I have to wait until they get the item they sent me before the correct one would be sent out. They take my money, send me the wrong item, don't answer my emails, then they cannot trust ME? After wasting my time getting this all back into the box and mailed back to them, I receive a 2nd one that was the correct product but broken. I am STILL waiting for that part to show up. Don't take my word for it, check out the BBB rating for this company or the reviews at Amazon. As for the product itself, its poor quality with a CowboyStudio sticker on it. After I placed my order, I received my tracking number a few days later. After about a week went by and no sign of my order, I checked the tracking number and it said the product hadn't been checked into a UPS facility yet. From what I understand, that meant Cowboy Studio made a shipping label, but then didn't ship it out. I gave Cowboy Studio another week. Still no updates on the tracking number. So I called Cowboy Studio and had to leave a message because no one was answering. The following week, I hadn't heard back so I called them again. This time I got through and they informed me that the light stands I ordered were out of stock and will ship out as soon as they get more. The representative I was speaking to also offered to order a different model of light stand for me which, according to her, were practically the same except for a few minor specifications. I agreed and they were shipped out. I received them promptly thereafter. Overall, the representative was nice and they arrived quickly once the situation was taken care of. I'm also happy with my product. However, I am a bit annoyed that Cowboy Studio didn't take the initiative to at least call me or email me to let me know that my shipment would be delayed because the product is out-of-stock. I waited two weeks for an update when it could have been taken care of in a much more efficient amount of time. It is also bad customer service to not answer your messages as a business. read more

When I received the item I called about getting a new item sent to me and they said it was their policy not to expedite the actual item I had purchased back to me. I said that their web site showed 77 in stock to which the clerk replied,"oh no,we've been out of stock for quite awhile.." He checked any way and sure enough 0 in stock. I suggested they find a new webmaster if the website is not accurate. I'm going to write out a few reasons why no professional (or even amateur) should ever shop here: 1. Most of the gear they sell is third-party knock offs or their own brand-name gear which is even worse. We purchased softboxes from them and they fell apart within a year (i.e. broken sockets, handles, etc.). Don't even try reselling any of the gear, because it isn't worth anything to a discerning professional. It's barely worthy of a flea market. 2. Their customer service is HORRIBLE! Just the other day, I reluctantly went back in there to buy something small and it was about 5 minutes before anyone even acknowledged me, the individual who then proceeded to inform me that "someone will be with me in a second". Another girl then came through who told me the same thing but then went back to a phone call she was on. I waited another 5 minutes before asking the original person if someone else can help me. In a huff, she then disappeared around the corner at which point I left without purchasing anything. I use to go there infrequently and this isn't the first time something like that has happened, although recently was the last straw. 3. They have a phone system that sends you through a long dialogue and most of the time makes you leave a message even though every time I've actually visited the store, they never been busy during business hours. Why it is someone just can't answer the phone directly is beyond me. The people they hire do not care, and I suspect they don't know that much about what they sell either. The cheapest, worst lighting equipment I have ever purchased. Burning $150 or flushing money down the toilet would have been far more rewarding than dealing with this company (cost of shipping back and forth + 20% restocking fee). It's not even just about the money but the hours spent assembling and disassembling their cheap equipment, having to find alternative rental equipment for my shoot, and the time spend re-packaging everything and shipping it back to them. The lighting equipment they sent was defective, parts of them broke the first time I tried them, and parts of them just did not work. Their parts are made out of the worst plastic and there's a reason why their equipment is so cheap... it's disposable. Dear Cowboy studio, your business model is ridiculous. You sell defective, mediocre equipment and when customers want their money back you charge them a 20% restocking fee. No one wants an exchange when your product flat out does not work. I learned my lesson and bought a more expensive kit from a reputable merchant. I would NEVER use them again and would not recommend this merchant. Save money and buy equipment that is more expensive but will be worth your investment. Cowboy Studios are a scam. I was so stupid to fall for the cheap price. Avoid like the plague. I never knew that American companies are allowed to operate such a rogue business model. I have been ordering online for so long without ever encountering rogue traders that I did not feel I needed to do an FBI search before ordering from this online store. I placed an order for an item that only they were carrying. I noticed that upon checkout, the picture of the item was for a different model to the one I ordered. Went back, and that was it, they had a mistake in the picture. I sent them an email and they confirmed that they would ship me the model I ordered, not the one shown in the picture. Guess what, in spite of noticing of their mistake, and double checking and they confirming, they sent the wrong model! Unbelievable. So through email exchanges give me an RMA and I sent it back. I needed this item quickly as I was about to travel and needed it for my travels, so I ordered another one, with expedited delivery, now that I was so close to travelling. For some reason, they held onto my order so that it did not arrive for some 3 weeks, when I had come back from my holidays! Not only that, they want to charge me 20% re-stocking fee for their mistake! Given the series of events, there is no way this was a mistake on their part. I now firmly believe that they do this to make money from unsuspecting customers. They made another 20% profit simply by purposely sending me the wrong item. Some of there equipment is a good value (SW-400 are good lights). I purchased one of their cheaper studio sets and that was a mistake. Monolights were cheap and one broke shortly after owning it. Background is serviceable but flimsy. Softboxes are hard to put together but actually work decently. The company however has questionable morals in my opinion. I left a 3 star review for one of their products (on their site), had similar criticism as I had here and within a day my review was taken off their site and the two 5 star reviews are all that remained. My goodness this has been a horrible experience, I ordered a lighting kit (much like what many have complained about) that was advertised on the best buy website with an image of: two 110 monolights w/ stands two softbox covers a large carrying bag two back drops: black & white a stand for the backdrop. This order was made on December 16, 2013.... of course a label was created by UPS, but like many of the other reviewers there was no package to be shipped received by UPS from Cowboy Studios... not to mention it was advertised as a 1-2 day shipping when spending above $100 on Best Buy's site.... This gift was for my fiance's photography business, and she didn't receive anything until New Years Eve; a full week later (6 full business days..NOT 1-2!) Upon arrival, to my fiance's surprise she received no backdrop, no accompanying stands, nor any carrying bag... IN ADDITION one of the stands for the monolights were broken and required super glue... There was a going back and forth about what the order should have been, and the end result was the advertisement was incorrectly displayed on the Best Buy site (NOTE: this ad info is provided by Cowboy Studios). They explained that they would send out the remaining pieces of equipment, after some emails and screen shots, and the UPS label issue happened all over again...EXCEPT they admitted to never shipping the parts...so they shipped them out A WEEK AFTER the label was produced for UPS....it's January 2, 2014 and my fiance still has not received her backdrop, stand, or the carrying case. Trying to take my photo business on the road I looked for a decent light setup and found a 2 light, 2,000 watt CFL easy setup on the Cowboy Studio website. Decent price plus shipping. OK so far...read the return policy...not great, but OK let's try it. China made, decent quality, no high expectations. Photography is all about the light. The Cowboy Studio N-2000wkit claims 2 x 1,000 watts. Not. Probably about half that. Useless to me. Contacted customer service, courteous but sorry...can't help, we rely on our Mfgr. for specs. Bought studio carrying bag from eBay. Vendor was Cowboy Studio in Allen, Texas. That caught my attention. I wanted to buy American and support American manufacturing. It didn't take long to realize that a Chinese business had taken root here. Not a bad idea, unless their business ethics are lacking. Apparently, that's the case here. The carrying case cost about $25 with free shipping. The eBay picture and description sold me. Advertised bag dimensions and style were perfect for my needs. A couple days later, a small box arrived. Crammed in it was a black bag. No receipt. Nothing. Wrong dimensions and completely different from eBay offering resulted in the first of several e-mails. Each got a response in poor English, written in the middle of the night and apparently from China. Carrying bags received were OK and would be fine if that's what you want. It's the customer service that's lacking. Attention to detail and an appearance of honesty would have earned a customer. Apparently, no one cares. So sorry for your disappointment, our delight to serve you, messages from Lily said. I asked for a refund. Lily said ship back at my expense and get refund. No. I wanted pre-paid label to return incorrect bag and the shipment of the correct item. No problem, Lily said. Correct item to be shipped asap with return label for first item and discount coupon for next order. Waited a week. Partially-crushed box arrived. Same item. No return label and no offer of discount. I asked eBay to step in. They said seller would have to send return labels, order would be cancelled and refund would be given. Lily sent more e-mails. I was a professional photographer in the pre-digital dinosaur age and spent thousands of dollars on the best strobe studio equipment available. Fast forward to the present, I decided to set up a studio in my home. Not being a pro any longer, I was not going to spend the extra $$$$ on top of the line equipment. I did much research and read reviews (some not so good) and still decided to give Cowboy Studio a try. Instead of strobes, I opted for a continuous light set up. I purchased a kit with two soft-boxes, two lights (1500 watt equiv. coil florescent each), two collapsible 5x7 two-sided backdrops/screens and a posing stool-- all for around $350. I just received everything yesterday and set up my new studio. Yes--the packing wasn't the best, but it was sufficient. Everything arrived in one piece-- nothing broken. Right-- no real instructions were included. However, I knew this already from my research and also knew that on-line video tutorials were available. Also, included in the box was a postcard with the website and you-tube info for instructions. I assembled and set up my studio within an hour and began to test the equipment. Everything worked great! Now--having the experience of being familiar with the quality of high-end equipment, of course I noticed the difference. But I didn't expect to get $10,000 quality for $350!!! So far I am very satisfied and happy that there is an alternative out there for someone like myself. Also, I do recommend ordering directly from the company instead of Amazon or eBay. I was able to call- get my questions answered- and talk to a real person. I did not experience any difficulty in getting a customer service rep to take my calls! Hopefully this review will be of help to someone who is considering this brand but is put off by some of the other reviews. Cheap or mediocre photography products popular with beginners. Mostly cheap knock-offs that only look similar to professional products. Poor design, lack of quality control, cheap materials and no durability. Cowboy Studio has several different usernames on eBay, so if you try to buy there instead of the website it is still them or a subsidiary. Customer service is terrible even when items are received defective or broken. You are lucky if you get a reply to e-mail. By phone, they say everything is made overseas so not their fault. They tried telling me defects in a speedring were "design changes". With that rationale, any warranty they offer becomes worthless. You must also pay for return shipping even if you received a broken item and they charge a restocking fee even when the poor quality made the product unusable. read more

One of the lights was actually manufactured wrong so it is missing vital pieces for the light bulbs to actually screw in. NONE of the light bulbs work! So I am able to use 1 stand which defeats the purpose of buying all three. I want to use all three. When I sent them an email about the issue, they ignored me. so I have no way of sending back the useless/damaged/broken product. I feel like they stole from me. I placed my order online a week ago on Tuesday. I received tracking information the next day like their website said I would. The day after that, I received a notice that the tracking information had been "voided". I thought they would send new tracking information or some sort of update seeing that they had my phone number and e-mail. Wrong! I called on Monday and left a message. The recording said they respond to phone calls the following day. No return call on Tuesday. I call on Wednesday and inquired and they said a new tracking number had been assigned yesterday but not updated in their system. I inquired as to why no one returned my call or sent an e-mail and was just told again that it was just done yesterday with no explanation as to why it was originally voided or why it took ME calling THEM to spur them to assign a new tracking number. Very disappointed that they didn't take any initiative to offer any customer service... this doesn't create much confidence in their product or company. After reading the other reviews on here, I just hope my order is received complete and of decent quality. read more
