I ordered the "Marley" burrito which had jerk chicken sweet potatoes, plantains and coconut rice! Add cheese to make it even more delicious! They also have these kick a** homemade hot sauces!!!! Coyote is a go-to when visiting my daughter at App State. It's always busy and a line can really build, so expect a wait. They have patio seating as well which is super popular but inside dining will get you seated faster, at least from our experience. My daughter and I usually get a half bowl of our favorite menu items. The Havana with battered tilapia and mango lime salsa for me and the Phoenix for her with pico de gallo. We also get a side of tortillas each so we can make our own tacos. #nomnom Even with the half bowls, we never finish and always have leftovers to take home. Wait staff is always friendly. The reason that I am giving a low rating is because of the hostess who made our experience negative. She told us it was going to be 15-20 minute wait and we waited an hour. We went in there to ask about where we were on the waitlist because many others were being seated and she was rude. Yep, This is a great spot to go for lunch after a long cold day on the Sled Hill or just because you want to eat some great food! We had the french fry basket with a mix of russet and sweet potato, with this amazing house chipotle ranch dip! WOW it was good! The wife and I couldn't stop eating them. We then learned of a fantastic offer that the kids eat free with adult entree purchase! That is a great deal! Now you don't get to pick a specific kids meal but what you do get is great for kids and that is black beans, coconut rice, and fried plantains, and cheese quesadilla. My kids loved the quesadilla and black beans, since we have two adults and three kids we bought a kids chicken finger plate and split up the 3 plates amongst the 3 kids. We had leftovers as my kids are picky eaters but everyone was full and happy with what they ate. My wife got the Isabella, rice, black beans, sliced spinach, grilled tempeh, caramelized onion, pineapple, fried plantains, and chipotle cream cheese. I had a few bites and it was very yummy, she said she loved it and it was so big she saved half for later. I ordered the Balsamic Chicken Sandwich that was on the Chef's special menu and it was to die for; i reluctantly let the wife try and she didn't want to give it back. My brother and his family live in Boone so I am fortunate enough to get to visit! Our group happened upon coyote cafe and we were glad we did! The main premise is that there are several ingredients that combine into a bowl, a "boat" or a burrito. The bowl and burrito are pretty self explanatory but the boat is more casserole style with jack cheese melted on top. I had a boat that started with blackened salmon, with coconut rice, black beans, fried sweet potatoes and a variety of other ingredients. It was terrific! Three bowls were ordered then my son ordered a burrito with rosemary chicken as the main ingredient. He liked it but his main complaint (and I have to agree) is the chipotle sauce included was so strong it overpowered some other flavors. We had a pile of fries as an appetizer...combo regular and sweet potato. Yum! Definitely recommend! read more

Currently, they are under construction which is problematic. The tables are packed in very very tightly, there is no room to move around. There is only one room due to that and it is extremely loud. Such a huge menu with so many delicious options -- it's hard to decide what to eat here! I would say that ordering a "boat" is the way to go. I went with the Mojave boat, and it was so flavorful and filling! It comes with your choice of salsa, so I chose the pineapple habanero salsa. It was not spicy enough for me and neither were the hot sauces that they offered (they make them in-house!)... but the boat had plenty of spice and flavor on its own. I also enjoyed a starter of the fries with chipotle ranch -- that chipotle ranch is delicious! The restaurant has a great atmosphere even though it's a bit small. For those who are new to Boone or are just visiting as a tourist listen to me...you need to go here. This is a place well known to the locals in Boone. They are famous for their unique salsa options and clever twist on Mexican/Mediterranean food. Very friendly staff and great tasting food. The only reason why I'm not giving it a 5 star rating is because they can be a bit slow at times and less notably it's located right next to a Walmart parking lot. I wish there could be a better view, but to be fair they do try and make it cute to sit outside. I would recommend the Sedona Bowl with the Nao sauce (hope I spelled that right) and as a plus this dish is Vegan! For those non Vegans I would recommend any one of their bowls with a salsa that you find interesting. As a recent graduate of App I will miss going there, but will definitely be back up to Boone to eat there soon! read more

We decided to give this spot a second chance, as our first experience a few months ago did not encourage us to come back. Last time we got boats and they were underwhelming, but okay. Today we tried burritos and they weren't any better. I paid $12 for a burrito that was literally just rice and black beans with maybe two pieces of "rosemary" chicken, which was really just dry cubed chicken with no s&p or anything. The "roasted" red peppers are clearly from a can, and there was no chipotle cream cheese. I cannot recommend against this place enough. As someone who cooks for a living, I would be ashamed to work here. We stopped here while on other business in the area. We had read some reviews and thought this place was kind of our jam, having come all the way from California. This place lived up to our expectations and then some. We were a little concerned about what options we'd have that are gluten-free, but were pleasantly informed that MOST of their menu either was or could easily become gluten-free! We sampled a few items from the menu, including a boat they are known for. We had to order it without the gluten-free cornbread because it contained dairy, and as such, we feel the dish suffered. That's the thing about substituting ingredients in a dish though. It's uncharted territory. and rather hit or miss. I'd still say it was a hit, however. Our trip to Boone, NC was brief, but this one restaurant improved it measurably! read more

This is by far one of the most wonderful and delicious places in the high country. Every time I eat at this location I can't wait to dig into the delicious food. They have the best food around in my opinion and the southwestern style is always amazing! There are so many food options for those who want gluten free foods. The owner has done a fantastic job running this place and the staff has always been top notch. Hats off to Coyote Kitchen for being one of the best restaurants around. Waited a while for a table. The hostess couldn't look me in the eye when she let another couple just walk in and was seated ahead of us. Waitress was okay. Waited half an hour or more for our food which was room temperature when brought to us. My saucer under the bowl was hot so I suspect the dishes sat on a warmer for quite a while. usually have very good food and take allergies seriously. they even have a separate kitchen specifically for allergies. this was a huge plus for me and my girlfriend since i have a shellfish allergy and she has a very severe dairy allergy. However, this past time my girlfriend order a dish that was said to be "dairy free". like always they made our food in the other kitchen, however, this time my girlfriend felt a reaction. when i told the staff they could not believe that this would be possible. the chef even came out and suggested she had a different allergy and that there was no possible way it was cross-contaminated. he also just did not believe how severe her allergy was and was not apologetic at all. he assumed that she is just lactose intolerant (which is not the case). for this to happen is very concerning, especially since he acted as if we did not know what we were talking about. for him to not take responsibility for it was hard for us to swallow, sadly it has ruined our experience with a place that usually has very good food and service. they did refund our order but that did not save them from a poor evening. If this didn't happen i would give this place a 4 or even a 5. however in the food industry health is the most important aspect so i must give it a 1. read more

My boyfriend and I went to Coyote Kitchen yesterday for a quick bite before a wedding. They were busy but were able to seat us outside...all the way at the end. The waitress came by quickly and took our order right then since we already knew what we wanted and we were in a bit of a rush. I loved the fact that they did half sizes on most of their dishes. I was able to order half a salad and a side of plantains. I got the Salinas salad and my boyfriend got the Marley burrito. We waited. And waited. After 20 or 25 minutes, a waitress came to our table one burrito, put it in front of my boyfriend, and asked if there was anything else she could get us. Um, my meal. She went back to check on it while I was getting nervous that we weren't going to make it to the wedding in time. I told my boyfriend to go ahead and eat but he was polite and waited. Then our waitress came by a few minutes later and apologized, saying the waitress gave us the wrong table's food. Then she took the burrito and delivered it to the right table. Um, that's not okay. She didn't ask if we touched it. She should have brought it back to the kitchen. We could have touched it or licked it and some random person would get our food. Gross!!!! I could not believe she did that. Our food finally came and it was incredible! We asked for the check right away, but it took our waitress a good 10 minutes to come by and pick up my card. So, service sucked and there is a chance we ate a meal that was delivered to another table and sneezed on, but the food was delicious. read more

I'm giving this place a 3 because it's really not anything special. Maybe something special for Boone, but this place wouldn't survive in let's say, a place like D.C or some other city. First thing I have to say about this place is that you should NEVER order the "half" portion here. I typically always order half f everything because it tends to be enough in any normal restaurant but here, the half portions are two bites. And then the full is almost too much. So I'm not sure why they jump from two bites to like a huge plate that you'll probably be taking some to-go of. I've been here twice. I've ordered the saguaro & the mesa verse w added chicken. Adding chicken is $5. Also for the half portion (basically a 2 bite appetizer) it's a bit pricy. The Salmon was not good and they're skimpy on a lot of the ingredients. I thought I'd fall in love with this place because I love anything that comes in a bowl. I'll just say that my second experience (when I new to order a full portion bowl and a different kind) was a lot better and I was a lot happier.
