I have been going to Coyote Kitchen for years and enjoy it consistently. Every time I have been I have experienced great service and delicious food. Their boats are amazing (especially with that melty cheese) and their selection of food is great for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans (not to mention their catering for people with allergies). My favorite thing on their menu is the chipotle cream cheese. I would kill for that recipe. In short, definitely worth the trip! read more

Could not figure out what direction this restaurant wanted to go with their food. Far from Mexican, with the lack of flavor in every dish. The "salsa's" were more like jams, and were served with stale chips. Everything here was very dry, flavorless, and just too starchy for me. We have eaten at CK a few times a month for years and I often recommend it to visitors to our area. Under the new ownership, however, they have increased prices, combined with noticeable smaller portion sizes. First dish I ordered had barely any flavor, other than massive heat! It was so spicy, even I couldn't handle it. I returned it...which I think I've done twice in my life before. Darren, came out from the kitchen & we chatted. Turns out they roast the jalapeños WITH the seeds, instead of removing them. He mentioned that other customers have had challenges with this too, and request to have them removed when they order their dishes. Mental note: If you dine here, and choose to order something w/ japs, make sure to request seeds out when ordering. I got the Cactus Boat instead, which was a lovely, well rounded dish. Our experience with Coyote Kitchen as vegans was deeply frustrating. On their website, the restaurant says that they are happy to make vegan any menu item and they recommend making their nachos vegan. I called in an order for "vegan nachos" and assumed all was well when the person on the phone asked if I would like tempeh or another meat substitute. However, when we looked at our food (after having driven home), we saw that our nachos were covered in dairy cheese. When I called to complain, I was told that the notes written by the person on the phone didn't make clear to leave off the cheese and I should email the manager with my issues. The waitstaff is not knowledgeable about veganizing their menu items. Even without the nachos issue, we spent a lot of money on some really mediocre food here. The "pick de Gallo" has the consistency of canned tomatoes and the bowl was bland. The vegan burger was advertised on the website as a bean patty but instead seemed to be a beyond meat patty (which is fine, but it is alarming to bite into a burger tasting like meat when you are expecting beans). The one thing I recommend here is the vegan chocolate cake. But as a whole this place was a big disappointment. read more

Coyote kitchen had people pouring out the door waiting to be seated. The staff was professional and efficient. We were seated in 15 minutes just like they told us. The waiter was busy, but took care of everyone in a kind manner. The food was so scrumptious with new tastes to excite every bite. The food is so healthy that we left greatly satisfied and fuller than usual. The bathroom had paper scattered on the floor. But we all know that one messy guest could cause this problem. read more

Last visit service was slow, it was obvious they were short staffed but continued to seat people. So the last two times I have opted for to go orders. Went here for dinner because my daughter suggested based on her experience. We were told to expect a 15 minute wait. No worries so we went to the bar to get a pint. Waited longer than expected just for a beer because nobody was tending the bar. Eventually got our beer and perused the menu. Nice selection of offerings! We got the guacamole and chips for an appetizer and boy was it delish! Ordered the jalapeño burger for dinner. It, too was darn good! Only issue was the waiter did not ask how we wanted our burgers cooked. He said they cook them all medium well. We asked for medium instead. Everyone in our party of 6 was thoroughly satisfied with the experience and their meal. Coyote Kitchen was my absolute favorite restaurant before they expanded. They have a unique and inclusive menu. The food quality has since plummeted after changes in management. The space is not warm and ambient as it once was. The last time I ate at Coyote I was given dirty silverware and noticed the shift in food quality. I wanted to give it another shot, but I was very disappointed by the establishment tonight. I'm not sure even coyotes would be bold enough to eat this. we ordered chicken Nachos and shrimp tacos, total came to $41 including tip. Im flattened by all the positive reviews, but then again, it is a college town. Nachos tasted uninspired, they served their purpose after picking them apart but it didn't leave me satisfied. Onions and red peppers were very sweet and were not good on the nachos.. They'd taste more at home on a sandwich but i could hardly see a home for them in/on something this establishment sells.. really tilted the balance in a bad way. The mango lime salsa was very sweet and the pico de gallo had a huge chunk of tomato in it which was pretty much the entire serving, aint dipping or spreading that. The Coconut rice was good, light and flavor was balanced well, but just like the nacho toppings, I wouldn't want it in/on a taco or burrito. the beans were.. beans.. my wife didnt finish her shrimp tacos, "they tasted weird". apart from the weird food, the staff could use a more strict dress code. i'm not really fond of being served by a waitress wearing one of those "oversized t-shirt" dresses and is, unintentionally or not, bra-less. overall opinion, they need to get their flavor combinations ironed out.. while everything tasted pretty bland and could garner a 3 star rating, its the flavor combinations that just derailed the entire thing. would not return. read more

Unassuming restaurant that got good Yelp reviews so we decided to try it. Glad we did. There was a wait, and I can see why. Good Covid protocols, outside seating with social distancing, masks. We had two starters, chips and salsa sampler - there were 4 salsas and the plantains. I got an interesting sounding salad and my husband had a burrito that he loved. Service was quick which was great since it was a cold evening for the outside seating but well worth it, and prices were fantastic for dinner. Will be back when we're in town! read more

Based on the recommendation of our Airbnb host, we ventured out to Coyote Kitchen on a Saturday night. The restaurant appeared short staffed as there was plenty of seating available but we waited about 30 minutes before we we're actually seated. I liked the ability to order a half bowl (full sizes looked really big!). We started with the plantains as an appetizer. They were fine. Not out of this world but good. For my entree, I went with the Sedona, which included Blackened tempeh, coconut rice, black beans, sautéed spinach, fried sweet potatoes, corn, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, sweet red vegan mayo and scallions. It was flavorful and fantastic! It is one of those dishes were every bite is good. You can sub in tofu or tempeh in most of their dishes. We had a great server who did apologize for our wait. You can find options for a lot of different palates and diets. I would definitely return in a future Boone trip. read more

WOW! What an explosion of flavors in my mouth! We are in the area on vacation. If we lived here, we'd have this place on heavy rotation. I ordered the chef's special of the day, the Blackened CAB Tacos with beef, chipotle flavored cream cheese, spinach, tomatoes, caramelized onions, pineapple, and crumbled feta cheese served in flour tortillas. Wrapped in huge soft shells, the sweetness of the pineapple, the crunch from the raw spinach, and the spiciness of the chipotle cream cheese combined to give these tacos a mouthful of favor. Coyote Kitchen definitely serves a unique twist of Mexican-esque food with very interesting combinations of flavors. The majority of the menu seems similar to any other Mexican restaurant's menu with tacos, bowls, salads, and burritos, so I was instantly drawn to the boats, which sounded like the most differentiating dishes in the menu. I wound up choosing the Baja Boat with char-grilled tilapia and really enjoyed the dish. As a personal casserole dish, I thought that all of the ingredients really meshed well with each other, providing me with delicious bite after bite. I loved the touch of the coconut rice since it was super refreshing and different from what you normally see. I'm a huge fan of the Mango Lime salsa as well, and I thought that it paired perfectly with my Baja Boat. Some of my friends got the boats with the cornbread base rather than coconut rice (the Texicali and Taos Boats are both served with cornbread), and they didn't have as pleasurable of an experience. The cornbread is much richer in flavor as compared with the coconut rice, and as a result, it makes the whole dish much heavier. I would suggest that if you're not a die hard fan of corn bread, to ask for a substitution of coconut rice instead. Another thing to note is that they definitely go heavy on the cheese here, which is a good and bad thing depending on your affinity to cheese. I thought it was delicious since the cheese wasn't too strong, but many of my friends wound up picking off the cheese of their dishes. We also had the Homemade French Fries as a starter dish with half sweet potato and half regular fries. I must say, even the fries were delicious! I love sweet potatoes, and I actually enjoyed the regular russet potato fries more than the sweet potato ones. If you are to choose a starter dish, you definitely won't go wrong with the French fries! It's a great dish to share. All in all, Coyote Kitchen is a very cute, quaint, and hipster joint with unique foods and flavor. I would definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the area - if you are a lover of Mexican food, you will love this place! read more

Coyote Kitchen has just recently added on the the dinning room area and installed a new outside eating deck. The food is super fresh and vegatarian and vegan friendly. It's a South West vibe with an amazing menu from burritos to burgers. All with their own flare. The salsas are all wonderful and upon request they will bring a few of those ever changing house made hot sauces. I highly recommend checking them out next time your in the area. Good affordable food! We had the taco & shrimp/chorizo boat with a side of chips & tortillas. We ordered half and it was more than enough! Think chipotle bowl but without the romaine lettuce & guacamole. The salsa is ok. It's more savory than a normal salsa with zero heat. Also, I highly suggest asking for the hot sauce they have. One of my most favorite restaurants in North Carolina. Some of the spicy items are very spicy, so be careful. Personally, I love spice, but if it is labeled "spicy", it may be too hot for you. You can always get hot items on the side. The "boats" are awesome. A "bowl" is a healthier version of a boat, missing cheese and sour cream or something.
