So my initial visit here was personally disappointing (overcooked burger) but my friends loved it, and are generally big fans, so when they invited me to check out Saucy Sunday here, I figured it was worth a shot. Unfortunately it was even more disappointing than the normal meal--and this time I was not alone in this opinion. The advertised $25, three-course "Italian American feast" was basically a tiny piece of bland focaccia for course 1, an arugula salad for course 2 (tasty, probably the only highlight) and a bland pasta--an overly thick spaghetti that was either in a lamb bacon carbonara that was somehow dull and flavorless with tiny bits or meat or, for the vegetarian option, would be prepared in a garlic and oil sauce that frankly lacked garlic--or any flavor whatsoever--served in a slightly gelatinous sauce that had a few cannellini beans tossed in--honestly, it had the consistency and what I'd imagine the flavor would be of the liquid in an opened can of white beans. We thought the salad bowl seemed a bit small for four and asked for a bit more with the pasta and were charged and extra $6 per person, which seemed steep for what we got.  The portions were meager aside from the giant slop of a plate of pasta.  The wine was a perfectly acceptable quality for a bottomless wine night, though I really feel like we had to flag people down to get them to refill the carafe on a night when it wasn't very crowded, as we played a final game of how long can I leave 3-5 pasta noodles on my plate until we can actually get more wine. Wine stops at dessert, which, I must admit, was pretty decent--the strawberry gelato was perfectly fine.  By that point, though, kind of just wanted to get out of there and not consider the price I was about to pay for a meal I was hoping to immediately forget. read more

In town for a show at Brooklyn Steel, and was slightly nervous we'd miss the openers by only finding a 7:30pm reservation online but the hostess and server were accommodating and delightful. The front room/bar area is a little tight and can be raucous but glad we waited, as the back room is spacious, with a beautiful chandelier crown in the ceiling. Now the best bit: the dry aged burger is the tastiest burger I've had in years. Truly fantastic. Great friends too. If you haven't tried it you're really missing out. I made a reservation for 4 with some friends on a Saturday night which was pretty easy to get. I was a little disappointed with my overall experience. The atmosphere feels very old school speakeasy, very dimly lit, too dimly lit that you cannot read the small print on the menu without dunking the small lit candle close to each word. In the beginning as I waited for my friends the waiter kept asking me if I wanted to order a drink, pretty frequently so I did. As my friends arrived she kept interrupting to ask if they wanted to order a drink. It was clear that we didn't want to as we were waiting for one more person. Wafer all parties arrived she took our food order. We ordered the sardines, the toast with chili butter, the pork chop and kale salad. The sardines were way too briny for me because of the pickled peppers and it ended up overpowering the flavor of the anchovies. The only think I enjoyed was the chilli butter but it definitely didn't taste like chilli butter. The kale salad and pork chop was just ok, I wouldn't order it next time. What's annoying was after being pestered to order drinks every 5 minutes and after taking the food order our food took about 30 minutes( maybe more) to arrive and we could not find our waiter the entire time to check on it while we were waiting. read more

I'd rate Cozy Royal three and a half stars. Cocktail bar with a tavern atmosphere. A couple wines by the glass, a few whiskeys, and a handful of beers on draft. Cocktail list was most intriguing of the beverages served here. I'm not usually one for cocktails, but eventually came upon their pistachio martini for dessert. My wife seemed to enjoy her daiquiri. She finished her drink before I finished mine which was a tell tale sign. For food, we started with the hippie salad. Well dressed salad. Good variety of ingredients giving it a nice crisp. For a place that seems to pride itself on meat, I was most impressed by the salad. Next, we had the ricotta and onion dip. I'm huge fan of caramelized onions so this dish hit the spot for me. I probably could have gone through three or four orders of it! Super rich, earthy, creamy, and savory. For the main course, I had the pork chop served off the bone while my wife had the dry aged burger. We also shared some Brussels sprouts. The preparation of the pork reminded me a lot of how some Chinese restaurant might serve duck breast. It had a crispy skin with a slightly fatty bit and what I believe was a soy sauce based sauce. It was served alongside some mushrooms which I believe had a balsamic sauce. Really interesting dish but I guess I was expecting something different with the dish being called a pork chop. I only had one bite of my wife's burger but it had a distinguishing caramelization on the beef patty. Reminded of the crunch that you might expect on an extra crispy smash burger. 4 oz burger rung in at $22 along with a side of fries. For dessert, we shared the sticky toffee pudding. I'd consider it a cake - not pudding or even bread pudding. Whatever you want to call it, I thought it was great and the whipped cream on top was really good too. It was the same whipped cream on their pistachio Martini. I don't usually find whipped cream noteworthy, but this one was exceptional. Service was attentive, patient, and helpful. Atmosphere was very cozy. We arrived around 5 on a weeknight but they seemed packed by the time we left around 7. A reservation might be needed during prime dining hours. read more

TLDR: Surprisingly good greens elevated our experience in this meat palace. As a long time, if infrequent customer of the Meat Hook, I was excited to learn about this restaurant, and finally made the pilgrimage for lunch on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. The greeting was friendly, and we were shown to a large, comfortable table in the back room. You might prefer the cozier front room if you're there for people watching, but we appreciated the extra space. The outdoor seating was sparsely occupied on a hot, humid day. The decor is mid 60s, and I heard a PigPen Dead tune on the soundtrack - think it was Easy Wind. Mr. D ordered a Bloody Mary but I plumped for a Bullshot, again going for that old school vibe. We began with the Grand Royale, a platter designed for three, which worked perfectly for the three of us. Three oysters in their shells, each sitting in an onion ring, four firm medium cocktail shrimp in a ramekin of cocktail sauce, and an assortment of crudites - radishes, string beans, carrots, fingerling potatoes, Treviso radicchio, all on a bed of super quality greens, with a sort of aioli in the middle. I was astonished by the quality of the produce - really fresh and absolutely beautiful. The onion rings would have been great, but the oysters chilled them, I would definitely go for an order of these on their own. For a main, I went with the chicken and waffle - a well fried breast, topped with a compound butter and maple syrup. It took second, first going to Mr. D's mortadella sandwich, which was one of the best versions of the BEC I have tried, and the home fries were on point. I think La Portena was slightly disappointed with the Butcher's Breakfast, the eggs were properly cooked, the "French Toast" sausage disappeared in a flash, but she surrendered the scrapple - too peppery for her and a bit on the thin side. Mr. D and I dispatched it. The house had generously subsituted a romaine salad for her home fries (no extra charge) and it was of the same high quality as the Gran Royale. A light dressing and just a bit of thinly sliced red onion completed the picture. I don't know who is supplying the greens here, but they deserve an Oscar. Between the Gran Royale and the mains, no room for dessert. Will return for dinner. read more

This is the new spot at Humboldt & Jackson where Humboldt & Jackson was, from the team behind The Meat Hook and also the chef from the now closed Fritzl's Lunchbox. They don't have gas yet, so the menu is a little off - maybe wait until they're fully ready so you can get burgers, fries and the pork fried steak. The rest of the stuff was all delicious though, and the full kids menu is excellent if you happen to be dining out with kids. I stole a Chicken Nugget from the kids order, and it was really good, and should definitely be on the regular menu. The Tomato Tartine is also delicious, but I need to come back once they're fully ready. read more

I love this place! This time we got the Chicken Scarpariello and the Steak Frites. The pepper sauce with the steak was really good. The flavor was rich, and the pepper really shone through. We both agreed that the fries were too salty. The chicken was less exciting. The first few bites with the sauce were satisfying but then we found the sauce overwhelming. It was punchy and flavorful but a bit much. Also, the elements of the dish felt disconnected. The sweet Italian sausage felt random. The food took over 30 minutes to come! Great spot for a date night or get together with friends!! The place looks small when you walk in with a nice bar upfront but then there is a huge back dining room with lots of tables! Reservations are recommended but it seems there might always be a seat and not a super long wait! Started with martins and the beef tallow popcorn which was a little greasy on your fingers but tasted so good!!! For starters we had the steak tips which were a little salty from the teriyaki marinade but still tasty! The baked potato pierogis are regular potato pierogis with a sour cream dipping sauce a little expensive ($14) for just 4 of them but they are good! The wedge salad was just fine, there wasn't a ton of blue cheese and they added a lot of tomatoes and cucumbers. For the main I split the burger with my boyfriend and it was cooked a perfect medium rare! The fries were nicely cooked and had some good color on them. I asked for an extra side of sauce since the burger was a bit dry! Dessert can be skipped our sticky toffee was just fine, it tasted almost a little burnt on one side but the whipped cream was great! This has been our favorite restaurant for many years, and so it was a no brainer to host both our engagement party and our small wedding dinner there last summer. For both events, the manager was communicative and gracious in accommodating a few special requests. The pricing was clear and reasonable, and we were able to submit our guests orders ahead of time to keep the evening flowing smoothly. Even with my rambunctious family, the staff was kind and attentive, and everyone had a wonderful time! Most importantly, the food was INCREDIBLE! Inventive and delicious, Cozy Royale never fails to surprise and delight. We were so grateful to be able to celebrate our wedding at our favorite restaurant and to impress our foodie families with a true feast. A very cute neighborhood spot for happy hour or a pleasant dinner. It has an elegant and unpretentious interior, and separate dinning room and bar. Both are a great vibe, but the happy hour deal is really what brought me in and the food kept me coming back. They source their food from nearby Meat Hook which is pretty cool on its own. Happy hour isn't the only thing to go for, but the martini and smash burger combos great. They use a combination of cheddar, mustard, and relish that has made me wonder if I had space to have a second...third...or fourth. The sticky toffee pudding is definitely worth saving room for and the steak frites were beautiful. My only regret is that in the times I've gone I've forgotten to take a pic. read more

It was great while it lasted, and leave it to the meathook folks to open an Appalachian restaurant in the dead midst of deep 2020 after months of planning pre-covid had been ground to a halt, only to shutter it just as rapidly, presumably never to be seen again in that form. Add to that they brought back my beloved, albeit somewhat modified Fritzls burger #iyknk. I also got a chance to try and love the WV style pepperoni rolls, and the sticky little sausages, both of which I would love to taste again some day, but won't hold my breath for. I got my favorite, a dirty vodka martini and my partner got tequila on the rocks. My martini was extremely well-made, I thoroughly enjoyed it! For appetizers, we split the kale Cesar salad and the French onion soup. The kale Cesar salad was delicious- they hand graded the Parmesan on-top which really brought the dish to the next level. We both were a little indifferent about the French onion soup. It wasn't crispy on top and the broth lacked the richness that you generally look for in that dish but it wasn't bad. For our entrees, my partner got the steak frites medium rare, which he said was delicious! I got the smash burger with fries which they only offer ten each night. It was absolutely worth it! WTF is Appalachian cuisine you may ask? I had to google it for myself. It's basically farm to table dishes. Foods are make by pickling and fermentation, rather than full-blown grilling. Their menu is limited now, with a full menu soon to come. Their drinks are by bartender Gretchen Moore are exceptional. I opted for the Girls Night Out. Ayeee it was one of those nights. Don't judge. For the Foods -Pepperoni Rolls - These are a staple. Perfectly fluffy rolls with slices of pepperoni. Don't be a fool like me and eat all of it, because you will want to save some space for the rest of din! -Grange greens - a mixture of fresh greens from Brooklyn Grange ranch. Of course it tasted fresh to death. -Sticky little pork sausages - super sticky and super yummy. Cooked in pork fat, these specially made sausages from the meat hook are so savory. **not sold at the meat shop** sadly -Salt cod dip - reminiscent of a spanish crocette, the salt cod went perfectly with the sourdough bread. A lil fishy tho fyi -Beef Neck - served with chiles, mushrooms, spigarello, and salsa verde - I was so full from all the carbz, but the meat was so tender. It was even better the next day. They now have the full menu now and I just had an excellent meal there. The pork steak comes with an insanely delicious grain mustard. I even scraped up the rest of it when I was done with my meal. The menu is small for food option but frankly, I like that. IMO it helps keep food quality high by focusing on a small collective food items versus having way too many food options and spread thin. Any how we got the cheese burger which requested to be cooked med rare and it came out exactly as that. Perfectly cooked with tasty flavors and crispy warm fries. Def would come back for that! They are all about local farms so beside the meat you'll have great fresh produce Avila keep in the menu. You can keep us casual with their burgers or go bigger with the steak.
