A totally accidental mis diagnosis cost us a bunch of money. After explaining our thoughts they are making it totally right. We are somewhat new customers of Crabtree Automotive and have been nothing but pleased with the service provided. Finding a service shop that takes pride in its work and hires trustworthy & hardworking employees, is hard to find anymore. Its hard enough to find that we are willing to travel the 30+ minutes to Albany from where we live. This will be the only place we take our vehicles now as we know we can trust them and the quality of work they provide. I've been taking my car here for the last 3 or 4 years. I was happy with everything until recently. Over the last year or so, I feel like something has changed, and every experience I've had has left me feeling irritated or unsatisfied. The last few times I've taken any vehicle to Crabtree: - I had a scheduled oil change appointment. I dropped my car off (parked right out front) and dropped the key in the drop slot. My car sat out there all day and was never worked on. Apparently, the key fell behind the box and they never saw it. But they also never 1) called about me missing the appointment (okay, it probably happens a lot, not such a big deal), and 2) never noticed an unoccupied vehicle parked right outside their front door all day. Nobody saw it and wondered why it had been there all day and nobody had worked on it? It was a car they had previously done work on, so I imagine they could have found it in their system. I tried calling them at 4pm and nobody answered the phone. I went down there to pick it up just before 5pm and was told it was never worked on. Shrugged it off, crap happens sometimes. - I took my car in for an oil change/tire rotation/etc. After picking it up and driving it home, I could hear a grinding noise when I used the brakes. I figured maybe it was just dirt or gravel and it would stop. It never stopped. I told them it had been grinding since they did the oil change and tire rotation. They said 1) none of their techs could apparently hear the grinding, and 2) they could run a level 1 diagnosis to find out why. Wait... I'm sorry. I'm supposed to pay $99 to have you look into why my brakes started grinding after you messed with my vehicle? I told them no. I asked them to be sure to rotate my tires at the next oil change, hoping it would fix the grinding. I didn't know what else would have caused them to start grinding after being there for the oil change. They were pretty new brakes, too.. and Crabtree actually redid that vehicles brake system in 2014... so... - They didn't rotate the tires. I was told they were short staffed because it was the week before Thanksgiving. Okay... I can understand that... but my brakes are still making a grinding noise from the last time you changed my oil. That nobody can hear apparently. Except me, my husband, my dad (who is pretty mechanically inclined), and anyone who has ever driven or ridden in the vehicle. - I took my car in for an oil change this last time and left with a $186 bill because the ignition cylinder failed/got stuck while they were doing the oil change. I've had my key get stuck once or twice (who hasn't experienced that?) but I've never had it lock up while trying to start it or turn it off. Was it their fault? I don't know, honestly.. I don't know. Would it have happened to me later on? Maybe. Probably. I really don't know. What I do know is that I needed my car back on Thursday, but they ended up having it until the end of the day Friday. I know that it happened to them in their shop and not to me outside of their shop. I know I felt backed into a corner when I was told they couldn't get it to start to even drive it out of the shop, and they'd have to tear it apart to figure out why. That's gonna be $99, by the way, cause we have to diagnose the problem. Did I have any other option? They didn't offer me any. I started bringing my car here because it was recommended to me by family. I won't be taking my car here anymore. I think they do honest work and they are friendly/nice people. The last year or two of experiences that I've had have always ended on sort of a sour note. But if you've got money and a car you really love, sure, they'll probably do a decent job for you. I wanted to mention something about the communication. I wasn't called until 3pm on January 7th to inform me that they were doing the oil change and the key was stuck. They said they were going to try to get it fixed. I wasn't called again until after 4pm to tell me they couldn't get it unstuck and I'd have to pay for the diagnosis to tear it apart. Kind of late in the day to drop that bomb. Also, they called me at 10am on January 8th to tell me what the problem was, told me the car would be ready that day... but didn't call me again all day to give updates. I had to call them at 4pm to find out if it was done and ready to be picked up. They said it wasn't... the first cylinder they put in didn't work, and they were trying to put another in. They said they would call me at 4:30-4:45 to let me know if it was done. I was sitting in their parking lot at 4:30 looking at my car parked there, not being worked on, so it was probably done.. and still hadn't received a phone call. I'm sure glad that I left home early and came to Albany to wait.. if they had called me at 4:45pm to tell me it was finished, I wouldn't have been able to make it to their office until close to 5:30pm. Being updated more regularly on the status of my car would have been appreciated. read more

After receiving Crabtree's list of needed repairs (that I never asked for, for just a standard old change that I was due for), the quote was for well over $1000 for needed services to make my "car safe to drive." Since they NEVER ASKED ME any history on any of the quoted issues they were making recommendations not knowing anything else that had been done. They wanted me to have a coolant flush and had no idea that I had it done less than a year ago, and had the coolant reservoir changed. That the issue with my radiator light in my dash is at the computer level which is a whole different issue. They would have done the same thing I had done less than a year ago without resolving the issue. I have just been watching my temperature gauge and it never goes past half way (except once when I was driving through the Grapevine in California). They made recommendations without asking any history. They were very professional and friendly, except after this experience I asked around from local people in the area, and they said, "Yep that is Crabtree, they are always looking for a way to sell up the repair to make money. They are a scam." I brought my "recommendations" to a mechanic I trust and he looked over their suggestions and gave me advise on his inspection and what he thought needed to be done. He said my brakes were fine (which they quoted me $359 to repair the drums), my hoses were fine, my battery was fine, my battery cables were fine (which they wanted to replace all of those), but my transmission fluid did need flushing which he did. My bill at my trusted mechanic was under $300. So definitely get a second opinion it will save you a lot of money. read more

This place is amazing. We broke down right before I-5 in Albany and AAA towed us here after my husband talked to a rep on the phone who was so helpful and reassuring. The other place we called in town had no interest in our business, or at least they acted like it. When we got to Crabtree, they were very nice and super helpful. The owner drove us to downtown Albany and pointed out sights and restaurants we might want to check out while they were fixing our car! They texted promptly with the diagnosis and price. Because my husband and I are uber checkers, he called our dealership in Tacoma to compare - they quoted us a price nearly 300 dollars over what Crabtree was proposing! When the car was ready (they fixed it in less than 3 hours and earlier than they said they would) they picked us up from the downtown furniture store where we were enjoying the unique architecture, brought us back, and sent us on our way. I couldn't believe how great the owner and the whole team was. The place they run is so nice, clean, and reassuring. I wish they had a Tacoma branch because I would never take my car anywhere else. If you're not a mechanically minded person (which I am not) going to the repair shop can be accompanied by fear and trepidation. There's always those thoughts of, "Will they be honest with me?" "Am I going to get taken for a ride and spend money on things that really aren't necessary?" "Am I going to end up bringing it back because the job was not done correctly?" This is definitely not the case at Crabtree Automotive. Every time I've gone there, the Service Writer has treated me as if I were the only customer--giving me his full attention and focus. They are outstanding at follow through and keeping you informed as to the status of your repairs. During my most recent visit, based on what I thought was wrong, I planned on having to spend quite a bit of money. They found out that the repair was actually quite simple and were very honest about it. Finding a mechanic that you can trust can be both challenging and intimidating--not in this case! This is a ps to my earlier post. After over $2000.00 still had the same problem had to go to different shop. They replaced a fuse the car was running it would have ended there if I had been told my car was running. They are not cheaper than dealership I had the worked priced after Crabtree Auto charges.. I will never send anyone I know there. Feel like they took advantage of me because my car was not running when it came there. I still feel I should have been told my car was running after they replaced the fuse before all the work was done. I could have made a fully informed decision. THE WORK WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DONE!!! I WAS NEVER TOLD ABOUT THE CAR RUNNING ONLY THE FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT. I DIDN'T CALL SEVERAL MONTH LATER CALLED WHEN I GOT HOME AND THE READ PAPER WORK STATING THE CAR WAS RUNNING. I have never done this yelp thing to a business. Lisa was miss informed by her employee. He kept going on about the fuel tanks I am and honest person just telling my side of the story. A lot of money on a repair when you have just been laid off work. And to still pay out more for new starter. I NEVER SAID I HAD NO MORE ISSUE WITH THE WORK OR WAS HAPPY WITH IT OR THE COST.
