When I'm in the mood for American food, CB is always a good choice. I've seen plenty of negative reviews about the food and the service. But that is not my experience. The food has always been good, and portion size is usually more than I can eat. Most of the servers are knowledgeable and experienced, and will provide you with good service. But again, always check your receipt to make sure it's right. There were 2 extra charges on my bill. One was supposed to be free, and the other was something that we did not order. The cashier did take care of the problem, but still, always check. Hmmm, CB breakfast tomorrow sounds good! read more

Very poor service from our server, Krystyn. Service is what makes or breaks a visit to an establishment. The order was taken and delivered promptly but went south from there. We asked for napkins and never got them, drinks were not replenished, and the final fiasco was we waited 10 minutes after finishing our meal for the bill. I went to the back service area and got my own napkins and take-home boxes. Guess someone alerted our server, as she came to the table within seconds with the bill. Sometimes you have only one server and she says "I will be with you in a minute"! And it takes her five to eight minutes. My Wife and I dined at Abilene's Cracker Barrel this past Tuesday (Dec 16), around 7:30 p.m. Not a full dining room. We were seated pretty quick, and our server Cami C, was attentive to us early, brought drinks--forgot the asked for biscuits, and then after taking our order, she somehow was pulled to help with the Door Dash and other pick-up orders. We didn't understand it, but at the end of the day, sales are sales--$$$. When our food finally arrived--Cami did apologize for the lengthy wait, the food was hot, and not the "under the warmer lamp" hot. It was delicious and filling. Cami brought refills in a timely manner. When we asked for the bill, it took a while but when Cami brought it, she again apologized and wished us an enjoyable rest of the evening. I do recommend Cracker Barrel for dinner (or supper), but suggest going around the "Early Bird" time of 5:30 p.m.--6:30 p.m. After that, it is a hit and miss on wait time. If you follow my content, then you know that the Mysterious Ryan M. steers clear of chain restaurants whenever possible. He is a culinary adventurer (never call him a "foodie"), a haughty, conceited gastronome prone to beginning Yelp reviews with narcissistic, self-aggrandizing, sesquipedalian introductions. On occasion, though, when the pickings are slim, he will swallow his pride (and often choke, for it's a lot to swallow) and patronize a chain restaurant. Such was the case on a recent road trip to Abilene. Breakfast options were minimal according to the local Yelp, so off we went to Cracker Barrel. A few service issues notwithstanding, my dad and I enjoyed our breakfast. Our first impression was not positive. As my dad and I stood at the hostess station, we observed several staff at the gift shop chatting and joking amongst themselves. No hostess was in sight, and none of the servers or staff at the restaurant acknowledged our presence. After several minutes, called out to one of the employees at the gift shop and asked if they could seat us. One of the staff snapped to attention and escorted us to an unbussed table. A manager intervened and reprimanded her for seating us without consulting him first. It was an uncomfortable exchange to witness. Even more uncomfortable was the snarky, patronizing comment he made to us after she left: "She has good intentions at times, bless her soul." I considered calling him out, but hunger superseded that urge. A busser wiped down the table and we sat down. My "Sunrise Sampler" breakfast was hearty, varied, and exactly what I wanted. The sunny-side-up eggs were cooked perfectly (slightly runny yolk, crisp edges, fully cooked whites), the bacon was crisp without being burnt, the sausage patties were browned on the edges and juicy in the middle, and the biscuits were flaky and buttery. With rare exception*, grits strike me as bland food best suited for nursing home residents. These were no different, but that's less an indictment of the kitchen and more a matter of personal taste (i.e., I like food that *tastes good*). Our server was prompt, attentive, and ingratiating. Few servers can walk the thin line between ingratiating and overbearing, but she read us well. She laughed at my dad's corny jokes (e.g., "He and I are gonna be on a separate ticket; I don't even know him." Ugh!) and seemed to enjoy her job, a rarity at chain restaurants. I tipped her accordingly. No trip to Cracker Barrel would be complete without a visit to the gift shop. Over the years, I've found some pretty cool little knickknacks, including several miniature, keychain-sized arcade games. These games in the "Tiny Arcade" line are admittedly a novelty, but I've enjoyed playing with them at work like a true American Psycho executive getting paid to goof on in his plush office. On this occasion, I picked up a new entry in the series: "BurgerTime"! If you've mastered the controls of the original full-size arcade cabinet, then I challenge you to control Peter Pepper with a joystick the size of a fire ant. It's actually a lot of fun. But I digress; the gift shop is cool and I urge you to check it out. If you know of a better place for breakfast in Abilene, please steer me towards it. For the time being, I would recommend this Cracker Barrel location. If you go, expect an unnecessarily long wait followed by a hearty, reasonably priced, no-frills breakfast. I've noticed that the prices have increased a bit since my last visit to a Cracker Barrel, so the next time I visit one, I'll bring my mom's vintage menu from 1969 and demand a breakfast platter for $1.75. *One such exception is the shrimp and grits entrée at Peggy's on the Green in Boerne. These grits are creamy, cheesy, and chock full of savory goodness. read more

Stopped for dinner while on the road to visit the mother in law and attend a birthday dinner with my brother. After we were seated, our waitress brought us our drinks promptly, though it was just water and coffee. We ordered the "coastal white fish" sampler which came with several fried shrimp, turnip greens and fried okra completed that order. We also ordered the cornmeal fried haddock with baby carrots and turnip greens too. We didn't wait too long for our meals, which arrived hot. Okay I asked him how long it would be and he said about 20 minutes..cool I need to go across the street to Walmart and pick a few things up. I come back 30 minutes later to give them plenty of time and my guess is they had not started my order at this point. I walked around their store for another 30 minutes waiting for my food. I get my food and check the order and several things are messed up/missing. Food was mostly cold and disappointing for $60. Picked up a breakfast to go - decent. I stopped in to order a breakfast to go - around 7:45 am on a Thursday. They weren't very busy. I asked how to order at the cash register. The gal there radioed someone to come out to take my order. About 5 minutes later, a gal came out and acknowledged me and said she'd be back to take my order. Another 5 minutes and another gal asks to seat me. Explained I wanted to place an order to go. She asked that I wait a few moments while she sat some people. She did return and she took my order. So - a bit disjointed but we got it done. It took about 10 minutes to get my food. I suppose that's about right. Took the food back to the RV to share with the wife. Everything was there and cooked right. So, a good experience overall - just a bit of a hard time trying to place the order. Might do it online next time and swing by to pickup. read more

This Cracker Barrel braves the storm that is Sunday morning breakfast/brunch while most other places are closed. The food is consistent, I absolutely love the cajun shrimp skillet, and the lattes are phenomenal. I always have a friendly server. And it's cheap, it's so so cheap. Sure you might wait a while some days but that isn't Cracker Barrel's fault. This place deserves a higher rating. I've been to far less busy Cracker Barrel's in PA where the food comes out a lot worse. read more

GF and I visited the area from the Hill Country to dine at Perini Ranch Steakhouse. On the way out of town, we chose CB that was across the street from the hotel. Felt comfortable wearing masks thru the retail area and onto our table. Once there we were greeted and drinks delivered. Food order taken in a timely manner. What makes this 5 stars is our waitress and the kitchen actually listened! My egg sandwich came out with soft bacon just as I requested it; something that rarely happens without sending it back at least once. Sometimes I give up; for this visit I didn't have to. While traveling to El Paso, my coworker and I decided to stop and get food. Cracker Barrel was the only exciting restaurant at that exit so why not. I've visited Cracker Barrels all over the country. The food is okay. What we really go for is the store. LOL! If you've never been to a Cracker Barrel, you must go just to shop inside the store. There are all kinds of knick knacks to buy. I asked for the gravy to be put on the side. Well, the kitchen didn't follow the waitress' orders, so I got gravy all over my steak. It was okay. I've never written a review but this place was so bad I felt I needed to. First, the one positive was the patrons. Everyone is friendly and kind. The rest was terrible. The food came cold. Cold gravy and eggs. No jelly or butter. Part of the order was missing. But the worst part was when we were leaving and the long line and being told the system was down and we could not pay. This lasted so long my daughter left to get an atm so we could pay cash. They told us we couldn't leave so we were basically stuck waiting to leave or be accused of walking a ticket. No manager to be seen. She was apparently in the back trying to fix the problem while their staff was up front fielding unhappy customers who couldn't leave. The manager should have been out front talking to the customers. Never again. read more

CB has been one of our traveling favorites for decades. Lately they are less a favorite. The Abilene, Tx location did not do well last night. Out of meatloaf. Which is happening more frequently with many of their menu items at many locations we visit. Had the hamburger steak (rather dry), hash brown casserole (room temp at best) and turnip greens (added salt, pepper and pepper juice to make them better). Wife's meal was fine except the server never brought the biscuits and gravy that should have been part of the meal. VERY SLOW START. Waited 25 minutes just to get our drink order out. They are at very low capacity. Should not be skimping on staff on a Friday night. Food delivery was much better. Couple of errors on our orders, however they did correct them promptly. Taste of the meal was good. Served hot & fresh. We know what to expect from Cracker Barrel food wise and this was normal. Service was not up to their normal standards. With less people in the restaurant and the full size kitchen designed to serve twice as many customers, service should be at least as quick as it was before this pandemic. read more

Happy Turkey Day! This location was my first ever Cracker Barrel; my husband promised it has the BEST turkey dinner and food - he did not lie. We came to visit this Cracker Barrel for Thanksgiving and everything was delicious. Michael, our young server, was a delight for me and my husband as well. Michael was very relatable, funny and made sure to treat us with great customer service! He never forgot us when we had a request and was very swift about it too. The food was incredible, I'm glad we didn't go to Denny's instead! Normally I avoid turkey dinners from restaurants because they're dry and bland, but Cracker Barrel's was the opposite. The turkey was juicy, the turkey gravy was full of flavor, the potato casserole was a consistent temperature, the green beans were a HIT! I've tried alot of southern green beans across this state are too salty and blan. These were just right! The biscuits were a hit as well. The biscuits were not super dry, they were enjoyable and had that unique homemade taste to them - everything did at this place! This location sets the bar high for all future Cracker Barrel experiences. I can't wait to try more meals from their menu and visit more locations.
