Today I had one of my worst experiences at Cracker Barrel, my favorite pancake restaurant. Our server forgot to put in my order, and it took over 25 minutes for food to arrive. The appetizer we ordered wasn't available due to a menu change, but no one told us until much later. My son didn't get a refill until I asked for one to go, and we were given three orders of fried apples that no one ordered. To make matters worse, I noticed a dying water bug, which the server stepped on and left behind--extremely unsanitary and nauseating. My husband's burger was also disappointing. The only positive part of the visit was when my husband paid for an elderly couple's meal, which happened to be the husband's birthday. That moment made the day brighter, but overall this was a very disappointing experience.

I was absolutely impressed by the staff at Cracker Barrel. My server, I believe Joel, was on it. He made sure everything was perfect and even gave me a water w lemon cup to go. The eggs were light and fluffy, bacon crispy,w melt-in your mouth pancakes. Everything is also super cheap. W's all around

We always stop here at least once a year when visiting relatives in the area. This one is located in a large strip mall right on the main drag in Jacksonville. There seems to be a frequent turnaround in staff. Very friendly but can be inexperienced at times. The food ( breakfast, lunch, or dinner) is Southern comfort food. Biscuits & gravy, grits to fried chicken, dumplings, fried steak. Plenty of sides to choose. Something for everyone of all ages. And a great place when on a budget. But what pushes mediocre \ good food to a 4 Star review is the Country Store. A great idea for pre- or post- dinner. Their shop has a little but of everything for all ages. Great gift ideas. Toys to toiletries. Candies & soda to decorations. Clothes to knick-knacks. A little bit of everything. I recommend the chain & it's concept with economical pricing. I've only been to tow of them in NC. But this is my frequent "goto" and I recommend it.

    watery mac and cheese came

Last night in town my son wanted to try CB. I'm like ok (I had it plenty of times in California) Sat down waited 10 minutes to even get acknowledged. Managers and my waitress was chatting away in the server walk way, Took forever to get my drink, Food took forever i'm like did she had to go catch the catfish. Food came out luke warm. ohhh and my mac and cheese came 10 minutes after my food and honey it was sooooo watery i didn't even eat it. Our waitress was Trish. She was so busy chit chatting with other workers and fail to put a customer first. There were probably 5 tables occupied with customers it was NOT busy for it to be so long. I will never eat here again.

Cracker Barrel was on my must-visit list on our recent trip to North Carolina. We don't have them here in WA, and rumor has it they're the place to see (and be seen) for a classic southern food chain experience. I was not disappointed! The most shocking thing to me about Cracker Barrel was that it's not JUST a restaurant. They have quite possibly the most well-stocked gift shop in the history of eateries. In fact, after our meal, we spent at least an hour perusing the shelves here. But I digress. We were seated quickly and immediately ordered up some sweet teas. Because, when in Rome! The teas were sweet, cold, and delicious. Soon our food arrived. We ordered everything from chicken fried steak to mac 'n cheese to collard greens. Folks, this food wasn't exactly healthy but it was DELISH. And the portions were huge (with super fair pricing). My only regret is I couldn't finish it all. Also, one word: GRAVY. After the meal we descended upon the gift shop, where you can buy everything from souvenirs to boutique clothing to candles. It was pre-Christmas season during our visit, and their selection of holiday decorations was more than tempting. By the time we left, I did have a pretty mean headache from all the assorted candle scents - it was VERY strong. If you're prone to scent headaches, bring Advil!

    Sample floor

Stopped in on July 5th. I understand the 4th weekend is really busy. However, we were seated at a table that had food and jelly on the floor; directly under my feet. Looking around, I see the same under most tables today. Food on the floor, everywhere. Absolutely disgusting. I know this isn't the corporate standard. Really disappointed, so we asked to be moved to another, cleaner area. The photo is of another couples table, next to us after we moved.

I drove nearly an hour to get to this restaurant, excited to try the oxtails. Upon arrival, I was told they were no longer being served because they were out. This marks the third time I've driven there specifically for oxtails and was unable to get them due to being out of stock. This wasn't late in the afternoon either--I arrived right at lunch opening. I know what some of you are thinking: why not call ahead? You're absolutely right. That mistake is on me, and I've definitely learned that lesson. On a previous visit, I tried the shrimp and grits, and I'll give credit where it's due--they were actually phenomenal and easily the best thing I've had there. Unfortunately, my other experiences haven't matched that quality. The last time I visited, I settled for the brisket burrito. While sweet and savory can work together, this one was overwhelmingly sweet and just didn't hit the mark. I also asked for a Diet Coke and was told they only had Sprite, regular Coke, and water, which was surprising. My wife ordered the biscuits and gravy, which had almost no flavor. For a southern soul food restaurant, that was pretty disappointing. I don't plan on coming back. I'm not mad--just disappointed. I hope this review helps others avoid making a long drive expecting a specific dish only to find out it's unavailable.

Love to have more local spots versus the franchise trends in the area. Service 5/5 Really attentive service even with Saturday morning crowds weekend before Christmas. Booked reservations via Open Table because this place gets really busy. Food 5/5 We got classics fried chicken with waffles and French toast. Fried chicken was flavorful batter and they do provide sides of ranch and hot sauce by request. But pretty pricey for the amount of food considering the Onslow County area. Inflation is real. Also have a seasonal cocktail menu, we got the caramel mimosas which were pretty small again considering price. Definitely nice brunch spot in Jacksonville coming up considering growing up here and this use to be a Scholtsky's Deli. I forgot I was in Jacksonville. Hope to try more items on future when I'm back in town.

The bar tender had a great smile and greeted us as soon as we stepped in. The hostess had the mostess! The blackened salmon was amazing! Cooked to perfection and topped w crab ( yummy) and lobster! The crab fries were bomb- even the Cajun sauce on top was delicious. Just enough- not too much cuz I hate over sauced and soggy food. The brownie was really good- not too sweet and topped with raspberry and caramel sauce. Had to ask for more sauce because there was hardly any on it . Plus it was a little over done and couldn't eat the sides because they were way too hard- but it was huge and I didn't feel cheated at all! Definitely going again and again!

I asked our very helpful and sweet server Jersey if she had only 2 choices with one being chicken fried chicken or the daily special Taco Salad, which would she go with and she said the taco salad. So, that's what I ordered. It was very tasty, loaded with 2 types of cheese a side of Jalapeño (which I gave to hubby) alot of fresh tomatoes and lettuce, a side of salsa and sour cream served in a somewhat crispy tortilla shell. And the shell is the only reason for a 4 star vs 5, the shell wasn't as light and crispy as I like it. It tasted as if they fried it several hours ago and honestly, I get why they did it that way as it saves time but the shell just left me disappointed. Hubby ordered a patty melt with fries. We came into town to scope out the Jacksonville Landing for future bass fishing mornings and when I told him we were stopping in here for lunch he already knew he was having the melt. I mean, he thought about it for 90 minutes lol. I've had their melts before and it is yummy. I think though the fries were the star on his plate. They were crispy on the outside and pillowy on the inside and topped with something akin to Old Bay Seasoning. And they were HOT! Y'all, i mean, they're only fries but rhey were PERFECT! I am seriously alreasy looking forward to our 1st fishing adventure just so we can have lunch at the Kettle once we've caught all the bass. Jersey was quite attentive, but not hovering and warm friendly like only you'll find in the south. Oh, bestie told me to get the chocolate torte because she said, literally, "it's life altering." However, I forgot to so, just another thing for me to enjoy after our initial fishing trip. In some ways, you can go home again.

We genuinely enjoyed our breakfast and would have happily given the experience five stars. Then we went to pay. While my husband was paying the bill, I was looking at a cookbook near the register when a couple of folded $100 bills fell from his pocket. I saw them fall. I also saw the cashier quickly move his foot over them. Before I could react, he picked up the cookbook I'd been looking at and handed it to me. "No, thank you," I said. "Oh no," he replied. "I insist. My treat." Really? I was stunned and started to respond when our son quietly interrupted. "Mom, it's okay." I tried to protest. Again: "Mom. It's okay." Outside, I asked, "Do you realize Dad dropped money?" Then I looked at my husband. "Honey?" "Yes," they said. "We saw it too." Marines are trained to assess a situation and respond, and that's exactly what they did. A cashier without integrity, someone willing to risk his employment over a couple hundred dollars is a sad and desperate person. As for that cookbook? I've never used it. It sits in my kitchen among all the others, as a reminder of what two Marines taught me that morning. And to that cashier, should you ever read this: Your sleight of hand--or foot, in this case--didn't go unnoticed. You weren't quicker. You're not smarter. You didn't fool anyone. A couple Marines showed you mercy.
