We stopped in for a refresh and some carbs. The beers were exceptional and we felt a unique take on the styles (Porter, Lager, Helles, Ale) we selected. The Porter received our highest rating in unTapped to date, the Guava Lager is a must try. The Helles Belles had a crisp, spicy and sharp taste we rarely find in such a brew. I tried this place for the first time at their first ever Pickle Market and it was a blast! Food, Fire & Ferment teamed up with Crafty Bastard to pair the beer with an amazing beer-infused pickle flight which featured a range of flavors and heat levels that were quite good (definitely recommend checking this food truck out on social media). I also tried their Smoked Mac and Cheese, and as someone who is not typically a big fan of BBQ, this was incredible, and I would absolutely get this again. Best beer IPA's I've had in Knoxville while visiting. That being said, the brewery was so dirty. I love dogs but there's about a month's worth of dog hair on the floors. Fortunately not in my beer. Next to us a dog actually jumped up on the table. It really was the dirtiest brewery I've ever been to (and I've been to a lot). The bartender was super friendly. Covid19 Update: Times are super weird right now, and I'm super grateful that beer is still plentiful. Crafty Bastard continues to make some of the best beer in Knoxville. They are consistent and creative brews! Their carry out system is tight! They clearly are taking things seriously and I really appreciate it. All orders must be taken over the phone. Once you have paid by phone and completed your order, they place your delicious beer on a cart in the front of the building. No one crowds it. Everyone wears gloves. Coming from Gainesville Florida area, we were curious. There's a business IN Gainesville itself called Crafty Bastards Pub & Bottle Shop. They even use almost the exact same logo! Since we were going thru Knoxville anyways, we decided to stop and check them out. IF YOU LOVE CRAFT BEER, YOU ARE DOING YOURSELF AN INJUSTICE IF YOU DON'T GO THERE! Put it on your bucket list, whatever you need to do! I'm telling you, not only do they have some of THE BEST brewed craft beer on tap, but Crowlers filled with whatever you decide was your favorite! They had an Apricot/Earl Grey Tea that I instantly fell in love with. They have IPAs, sours, lagers, stouts, porters, any and every kind/style of craft beer you're itching to pour in your glass! Unbelievable they took a run down closed up building and turned it into such a great place for locals to gather...AND GATHER they do! There was barely space for us to park our butts down on one of the long benches with tables, but I'm in no ways complaining! It almost forces you to talk with your "bench-mates"! And did we ever! Met TONS of people originally from Florida, but who, like myself, feel drawn to Tennessee. I lived there once before for about 5-7 years and I still feel the draw. What an amazing place with simply amazing people! Plus, they give you a schedule of which and what food truck will be outside every day and basically what they serve. While we were there, the crépe truck was outside. Wish we hadn't eaten a ton before we got there: I would've LOVED to have their crépes!! So, in closing...I'll just say that they have some of the CRAZIEST beers (their Hawaiian Bbq), some of their local collaborations for seemingly unrelated ingredients (their Apricot/Earl Grey tea) and many fabulous local favorites as well. If you're even passing through Knoxville, headed somewhere else entirely...you'd be completely mad to not stop and at least take a sip! Oh!! I realized I forgot to mention two amazing things. One of my go to breweries when in knox! Has some really nice and creative selections, though the menu is not extensive. Located in the old city, Crafty has that industrial, casual, come as you are vibe. The place is filled with parlor games which creates a great environment for group. We got a milk stout (nice and creamy and chocolatey), chili pepper IPA, nitro brew, and a spicy ginger ale. Everyone was into their drink! Another cool thing about crafty is the ever changing food truck selection outside. Everyday a different food truck is featured. Personally this is very appreciated - so many breweries have no food options, and it's really nice that crafty has at least a little something. Nice outdoor area with plenty of seating and atmosphere appropriate setting for an easy going time. Our neighbors were quite loud rehearsing stories detailed so well we suddenly wished social distancing was 60ft! Should've expected as much for a place like this - not fair to rate places on their customers! The staff was very friendly and quick to recommend items which almost made up for the difficult to read menu and near-indecipherable presentation of food options. I tried the tap sour infused with hot sauce, milk stout, and took home a can of Thai tea IPA. Only the hot sour impressed, a vibrant spark of tuneful heat hitting all the right notes from start to finish. Can't say the same for the Thai IPA or milk stout, neither had serious flaws but at these prices offered bland flavors without the unique Thai essence coming thru or milk stout richness giving that lovely full body. The milk stout actually brought on a quite unpleasant aftertaste with each sip. For dropping north of $12 for three small drinks difficult to want a second round, seems this nice city hotspot is better for other types than me. read more

Great beer! And I absolutely love the feel and spirit of this no-frills Knoxville brewery. On any given pre-COVID day, you'd find people and dogs inside and out relaxing at picnic tables. Folks are reading, talking, and at ease. I've been to meet friends, hang out with the wife, or just to read a book over a couple beers. It's walkable and bike-able from downtown and north Knox and really feels like part of the community. Such a loss when COVID put a stop/pause to those gatherings (thanks for being safe, Crafty) but we've stopped by for crowlers and have been impressed with how well the beer travels. Crafty Bastard opened back in 2014 and is THE place to experience Knoxville Craft beer. The environment is quirky, and a little rough around the edges (honestly)..but don't let it make you question coming here! The prices are extremely reasonable and the bartenders are always friendly! This neighborhood is quickly changing and lots of other places have popped up recently, but this is the OG brewery. They don't have a bunch of fancy equipment they've gotta pay for, so the prices are much more in line with where they should be. Parking can be a little tricky sometimes on a busy Friday or Saturday nights, but if you happen to be out in the old City, it's a very close walk from there. They are also bike friendly, have plenty of bike racks and offer an air machine to blow up any low tires you may have on your ride- hell yea! This is a hipster hole as others have eluded to. This is also the best brewery in Knoxville! I tried the Mayan Chocolate Porter but watch out for the ?Cayenne? it will slightly spice up your throat...i didn't like it. Maybe I should have asked for a nip of it before going all-in. But through the past few years I have tried alot of their beers and have enjoyed most of them entirely. Food trucks come here often as this brewery does not serve food. That is cool also because you can pair beers with different foods..awesome idea, really. If you are in Knoxville as a local or a visitor for a day or two, roll in and get a beer. The place doesn't look like much but it is the best beer in Knoxville...a town which seems like it is trying to become an Asheville-like beer scene. Went here with my sister and my dad. It kinda has a hipster/punk garage sort of feel that I was definitely a huge fan of. It was hard to get a vibe because it was relatively empty and no live music but there was an impressive selection of vinyl behind the bar. If you're into brewing, this is a place for you. The bartenders are incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and the brewing takes place right by the seating. The beer itself was solid but nothing mind blowing. The prices made up for this though as they were incredibly low. I had a chili IPA which was pleasantly spicy and solid. The others I was with got a dank IPA which was a little sub par but definitely drinkable. The best beer we had was a Belgian Strong Ale which was a solid example of the style and quite tasty. Overall this is a low-key and well priced brewery that I'd love to visit again. read more

The Crafty Bastard is a scaled-down microbrewery or "nano brewery" specializing in unique high quality brews. The Crafty Bastard opened in 2014 and has been serving the thirsty residents of Knoxville tropical IPA' and smokey Porters. I popped into Crafty Bastard one Saturday afternoon around 2 o'clock. I ordered a Hop Candy IPA and a bag of Deep Fried peanuts. The deep fried salty goodness of the peanuts complemented the sweet citrus tones of the IPA. Crafty Bastard's interior is a long narrow space with very high ceilings. It has clean, well maintained bathrooms. Additionally, it has a very large out door patio adjacent from the entrance. Parking is a commodity and there was only one "sultan of the taps" that day. read more

Didn't have the opportunity to try much while I was here, but what I had - a chili porter - was awesome. They had some Soundgarden rocking on the record player and have done some pretty crafty (see what I did there) stuff with the space they're in. They represent local artists and are dog friendly as well, which is always a plus. Finally, don't be intimidated by the area when you're driving in. It looks like they are in an area that is under revitalization (which send to be fairly common with breweries now-a-days). This brewery is different...I'll say that. The first thing you notice are dogs sitting about. Once you get into conversations, etc, you pretty much forget about this, but every once in a while a bark fest will start randomly when something upsets one of them. I know this is a polarizing issue since some people either want to take their dog everywhere...or conversely many don't want to see other people's dogs in public - so take the whole "dog thing" into account before deciding on this place. As is often the case with breweries / bars located in old downtown buildings, this one in really narrow. It appears totally unfinished about half way back and is kind of haphazard from that point back to the bathroom. A super high celling and hard surfaces make it hard to hear. Music being played is interesting, although it's hard to fully make out, once again, due to the acoustics. A dividing wall would go a long way toward remedying this, but I have a feeling the current condition of the place is where the owners have decided to stop investing. And the beer? I only tried one...a stout. Unlike most breweries, they don't have flights, so you really won't get an opportunity to try a lot of their offerings unless you make this your go to place. They do offer "half pours" but at approximately 40% higher cost (per ounce), so one again not really a flight alternative. The beer itself was OK tasting...pretty typical stout I guess. I really would have liked to try others, but sadly I can't think of a reason Ill be back here however, well, maybe if I am stuck babysitting someone's dog I guess. read more
