We have a standing table lamp from Pottery Barn which has a glass table attached. It has double lights on it, however one of the lightbulb holders had slipped out and we had left it alone for a period of time. Beware. I have an Arts & Crafts slag glass lamp that has been in my family for decades. I was reluctant to have it worked on, because it has great sentimental value. However, after talking to Sam and telling him exactly what I wanted (to have it rewired so that I could safely plug it in and use it), I trusted him to rewire it. He initially told me on the phone that he could repair it while I waited. However, when I brough the lamp in he said I would need to leave it. It took him more than a week to call and say it was ready. To my horror, when I arrive to pick up my rewired lamp, he had PAINTED it!! What?! Yes, he rewired it. But the patina that had developed over decades in my grandparents' and then parents' homes was painted over with a brassy, sticky paint. I had ONLY instructed him to rewire it. He never called to ask me about painting. I was in tears in my car afterwards. I immediately called another antiques repair shop and brought them my lamp to see if they could salvage my heirloom. Unfortunately, they ended up having to strip it and repaint it a more natural color to closely match the metal on the shade. The patina is forever gone. In addition, when the other business went to put the lamp back together there was an original piece missing from the top that securely holds the heavy slag glass shade up. Sam had lost that piece. The other shop was able to put a piece in place so the shade stays up. I have no idea how much value my lamp has lost because of the painting and the missing original piece. Sam is a nice man and did apologize for painting my lamp and fully covered the cost of both his repairs and the repairs from the second shop. I am just saddened by the entire experience and very hesitant to have any heirlooms worked on anywhere in the future. read more

I bought two older lamps at a junky antique store on a vacation and they needed TLC. Each had a different sized harp and wiring from the 1950s. Craig was able to rewire the lamps, put matching harps on them and educate me about the type of glass used--Murano Glass. I hope he's right. He made the repairs while we chatted and had ample supplies on hand to match hardware and have me out the door in little time. I could have purchased lampshades from the vast collection available on the showroom floor, but I'm attempting a craft project redoing an older pair of shades. I needed to find a place that could tighten up an old 1950's narrow table lamp. I called Sam and was able to get an appointment a couple days later. Craig's Lamp and Shade is quite the hidden gem! When it comes to light fixture repair in Raleigh you certainly don't have a million options. After heading over to another lighting store and not being happy with the turnaround time I decided to head on into Craig's after reading the great reviews. The shop is small and tucked away in a nondescript retail park. Craig's has a really neat selection of lamps, many of which he created himself! I went into the shop on a Tuesday afternoon and it there were more people than I would expect popping in. I just needed a grounding wire added to my grandmother's old 1960's chandelier and he offered to do it on the spot while I waited. Sign me up! We chatted a bit about the chandelier and he gave me tips on what not to do when cleaning it. In about twenty minutes I had a freshly grounded chandelier! What's neat about the shop is that you can pick up one of the lamps or fixtures already there or you can bring something in and chat about the possibility of making it into a lamp. He can also do all sorts of repairs. Bought a European light fixture? You can get it converted to US standards. Have a light fixture that is too long or too short? He can fix that for you too! Friendly, fast, and affordable. I highly recommend! Just be aware of the hours since they are not the most convenient (similar to the other lamp shops in the area). read more

I have brought three fixtures to him, the latest a gilt bronze & crystal chandelier with a broken arm bought at auction. Got my lamps together and drove out to the store on my day off only to find it CLOSED, with a nice sign on the door saying "best to call first" If your hours are listed you should be there and open. I brought two buffet style lamps in for repair. One was really loose and the other was starting to loosen. Despite being almost closing time, Sam (the owner), repaired both lamps on the spot, including replacing the felt pads at the bottom of each lamp. The cost was reasonable and he additionally answered my questions about my bathroom lighting while I was there. This included looking up the appropriately-sized replacement lamp retainer rings for my specific fixtures. He was generous enough to give me a plastic ring that he thought might fit and when I took it home, I was able fix one of our bathroom lamps that had been loose for years. I went to Craig's Lamp and Shade today to get a lamp fixed; wiring is not my strong suit so I needed to find someone who knows what they are doing with electrical wiring. The customer service was astonishing and he fixed both the lamp and then its mate while I waited. Extremely reasonable. While I waited for the repairs I browsed the shop and saw many lovely one of a kind lamps that the proprietor had custom made from clay and porcelain pottery jars, antiques and the like. It's just nigh on to impossible to find a shop that really does custom work. Thrilled that I found him. Note: This Noblin Rd. address is their new address. A small shop with wonderful lamps. Mr. Craig restores and rebuilds lamps and sells these unique pieces at reasonable prices. It took us awhile to understand that there is a difference between lighting stores, which sell light fixtures, and lamp stores, which, not surprisingly, sell lamps. If you are looking for a floor or table lamp, as opposed to ceiling or wall light fixtures, this is an excellent choice. I should also note that a lighting store in Durham told us that there are no lamp stores in Durham or Chapel Hill, and thus, Raleigh is the place to go. They also sent us to another excellent lamp store in Raleigh, called Thompson and Lynch. read more
