Oh, man! Quite awhile since we've been here. Not sure why, but today we went for my husband's birthday. We ordered a huge amount of food. 2 lbs crawfish, extra corn and potatoes, fried oysters, fried shrimp, catfish, fries. Wow. EVERYTHING was soooo good. The fries were hot, crispy, cooked in fresh oil. (I can always tell) Oysters were big and milky and crispy. Fantastic shrimp and catfish. But, let's talk mudbugs! They were huge. Like eat the claws huge. Not a soft one in the batch, either. Our server was so sweet, and really catered to us because it is hubby's birthday, sending us home with THE MOST AMAZING beignets. This place is unassuming, but that doesn't mean that their food isn't delicious. My son and I ordered 2 pounds of crawfish. It comes with 2 potatoes, 1 ear of corn, and 2 sausages. We added an extra ear of corn. We kept the spice level at medium, which was perfect for me. The server offered us bibs and gloves. We took him up on the gloves. It was nice to enjoy crawfish without getting the spice in my skin. The sauce was so good! We peeled our crawfish and dipped them in it for extra flavor. A few of the crawfish were overcooked and mushy, but only a few. We will be back to try some of their other boil options as well. read more

I have no idea why Crawfish Shack is so poorly rated, but I am in love with this place. They have THE best crawfish in Austin, and service is always really good. I believe there's another location, but go to the Wells Branch Parkway location if you can. I've been to both, and this one is the superior one. Their oysters and crawfish seasoning are delicious, and during crawfish season, you can tell their crawfish are really fresh. I couldn't recommend this place more. Yep, I said it. Five stars. I've been eating crawfish all over this town for 30 years now after growing up in the Golden Triangle of Southeast Texas (which is basically Southwest Louisiana). I keep coming back to Crawfish Shack because they never disappoint when it comes to freshly boiled Viet-Cajun crawfish during crawfish season (roughly Jan - May). The seasoning & spice are just right, service is great, and the mudbugs are well-sorted and clean. This is why you'll see lines out the door every weekend during the season. I was really impressed on my most recent visit when the server delivered a 3 lb tray to the table and noticed there was a head missing the tail. He made a point to check to see if the tail was just pulled off during the transfer from pot to tray and then, unasked, went back to the kitchen and brought 4 more crawfish to the table to make up for the issue. Further, I have never encountered any mushy or straight-tailed crawfish (indicating dead before the boil) in years of visits. This attention to quality & detail is rare these days and something that makes me want to keep giving my business to Crawfish Shack. For the 2020 live crawfish season, the going price is $10.99/lb, which seems a bit steep compared to what you might find in Beaumont, but we're not there, we're in Austin. After the season, they'll usually offer previously frozen crawfish for around $8.49/lb and they are still quite enjoyable. We usually throw in a pound of snow crab legs for fun and those are going for $19.99/lb at this point. For crawfish, you are typically ordering 2-4 lbs per person (as you can expect only 15% of that weight to be edible tail meat). All that is to say this is not an inexpensive meal but for a special treat with a group of friends who love the seafood boil experience, it's a treasured way to get together and worth the splurge. The staff will bring gloves and bibs on request - do request it - and sharp kitchen shears for crabs. The table is covered in thick waxed paper and this is where you'll pile your shells in the center of the table. Sadly, the BYOB days of 2019 have gone and you can once again order from a selection of domestic beers for around $4/each. According to Texas A & M (a respected food science authority), "Crawfish are an excellent source of high-quality protein and are low in calories, fat and saturated fat. They're also a good source of vitamin B12, niacin, iron, copper and selenium." If that didn't convince you to give it a try, go for the shrimp or crab boil instead. The rest of the menu of typical Gulf Coast fried seafood and Cajun options is okay, but it's the high quality seafood boil that keeps Crawfish Shack packed. Decor is what you'd expect from a "shack" - nothing fancy, just a little "hole in the wall" kind of place in a suburban strip center, entirely appropriate crawfish boil atmosphere. It's crawfish season and with a name like Crawfish Shack you expect to be able to get crawfish but tonight that wasn't the case. We arrived, waited for a table and got sat next to the bar. We placed our drink and food order: 2 beers, fried calamari and 2 lbs of crawfish. The waitress asked if we wanted our calamari first or did we want to get it all together but I came hungry so I asked to get the calamari and hence the wait begin. I was half way through my beer when the calamari came to the table. Nothing fancy, no lemon but they did give you ranch. I will say that this calamari wasn't rubbery or over breaded. It was actually good and now I'm wishing I had ordered that and some fries and called it a night. So as I'm waiting, the ladies at the table next to us start talking about how the crawfish ain't right and the waitress comes to the table and then some guy comes to the table, apologizes and offers to make it right. Then the people at the table behind us are saying the same thing and I'm starting to get worried now. Two ladies come in and they are told that they are out of crawfish and my mind is now spinning cause we haven't gotten our crawfish yet and then "plop" here comes our crawfish. Now I heard the lady say that you get a corn and a potato per pound but she said it's per two pound and you get a sausage (make sure you clarify this) however regardless the crawfish didn't hit the mark. Ours like the other two tables got over cooked mushy crawfish. The guy comes out and offers to get us more but I'm like "I thought they were out of crawfish" which the waitress says they are but they are trying to round up enough to replace what we had. Next batch isn't any better and we opt to go with the shrimp. Now call me what you like however I'm not a fan of head on shrimp and I hate peeling and deveining cooked shrimp. I know it may not bother some folks but this gal ain't about that "black track line". So now I'm struggling to peel and devein shrimp and realize I have NO silverware. The waitress brings me a knife and a fork but I realize im working way too hard for my food and give up. The ladies at the table swear to me that tonight is an off night and that I need to come back, the manager is extremely nice and squares things up for us but I left still hungry and I really had my mouth set on some crawfish. Not sure what happened to this place but it has gone downhill. Before ordering to go, I asked if their crawfish was "live/fresh" since it's in season now. The girl on the phone said yes. Got home, the meat was mushy and worse than frozen. The shells were soft where u can bend them easily. The meat will break apart if you try to pull out of the shell. I called them back and asked why it's not fresh and they said the manager will call me back tomorrow, they are "swamped" right now. I also had a horrible day and was worried I'd be too much of a bummer to enjoy what was in front of me, but I have to say...THIS MADE MY DAY SO MUCH BETTER! Service was great, but we did get sat at a table under a vent that had a lot of condensation and dripped onto me and our table. We had to be seated elsewhere. I ate here with my son on 3/18/25. We like early season crawfish. We ordered 3lbs of crawfish. Waiter was friendly. The crawfish were disgusting. The shells were mushy and the meat tasted super fishy. Completely inedible. They were obviously previously cooked and frozen or cooked and kept in fridge from the weekend. When we pulled up it scared me a bit... it is a small unassuming place in a strip shopping center location. Parking was full all around and it was COLD out! We almost didn't go in. To be honest it looked a bit dicey. I dropped my wife and son by the door and I went to park. When I finally got into the place every table was full! It is a small location and they have every bit of space filled with a table. My wife had gotten a seat... but every other spot was full! Has to be a good sign right?!? Waitress comes over for our drink order and I order a beer off the menu... errrrrrr... nope... no alcohol, they are trying to renew their license. However you can bring your own... note for next time. We ordered hush puppies, bouden balls, and Jambalaya for starters. Then we waited... The waitress came back and took our order for dinner... my wife ordered 1lbs Alaskan king crab and 1lbs snow crab (you can pick your spice level and she got medium) I ordered 4lbs of crawfish medium as well and my 4yr old ordered the popcorn shrimp kids meal. How have I never reviewed The Crawfish Shack & Oyster Bar?? It is the best joint in Austin, TX for your boiled seafood fixins especially if you are a fan of Viet Cajun. This mom and pop shop is discretely hidden in a plaza but you know this place is a hit because driving by in the midst of crawfish season, there is ALWAYS a line out the door with waits sometimes 1+ hours. WAIT: 10/10 worth the wait though especially if you head to the bar to grab a drink. Is it even an idle wait if you are spending the time pregaming for the upcoming glorious feast with your favorite squadtourage?! As I look through other reviews, I swear this place should be at 5 stars but I think where a couple of those stars are wrongfully docked is because during rush times, the workers can be spread thin causing a bit of a service lag. FINE BY ME! I know what I want and I order as soon as my butt touches the chair so my food comes out ASAP with all the things I need. AMBIANCE: When you walk through the door, there is a hole-in-the-wall authentic feel as this place has been around for a long long time - a true local gem! Outside of the COVID era, there is usually butcher paper set on all the tables ready for you and your squad to get down and dirty with the spices and buttery goodness. If I could give zero stars I would. This used to be my go to crawfish place but after my last visit I won't ever go back. To start, I was served over 1.5lbs of crawfish that were already dead when they got boiled. I pointed it out after half of my first pound was bad, and the next batch had even more. There is no quality control. Place smells horrible nowadays. Building full of code & health violations I'm sure. My friend and I both got very sick the night of eating there. Everything tasted off The quality has declined greatly in the last couple months & my most recent visit they overcharged both my friend and I. They called it an "auto gratuity" because our amount together was over $150 even though we stated from the beginning we were separate tickets. They did not give me the option to tip, they added the tip themselves and after I called the restaurant for the two days following the incident, a helpful manager tried to make the situation right and told me the owner was made aware and he would refund me the auto gratuity. Instead of refunding the auto gratuity, I opened my bank app to find an even bigger charge on my card. The owner tried one single time to call me 5 days later and never refunded me. He should have refunded me the moment he was made aware and saw the discrepancies himself, especially after I called the establishment trying to get ahold of him 10 times before he gave me the time of day. I wanted seafood for my birthday so i treated my twin and myself. The place is SMALL but the turn around is great. We had to wait for a table but not for long. Which was a plus since we were about to get the order to go. We sat down and ordered our boils and we were told they didn't have snow crab but they had Jonah crab. We've had these before and though we hit the jackpot. Well when it came out it was snow and the server told us they didn't have Jonah. So not sure how it got lost in translation but it may have been because it was super loud. We thought the sauce would be a little better and more of it so we could dip them in. I'm an avid seasonal crawfish eater/cooker, I think I can tell when the crawfish is fresh or dead. 95% of my crawfish I ordered was dead, not fresh (alive). For lent, this place would take care of my crawfish fix. If you are looking for Viet Cajun crawfish, this is the place. Market price sounds about right and it taste exactly as it should. So delicious! I'm only here for the crawfish and it's the closest I'm going to get with the Houston Viet Cajun Crawfish. There is several level of spicy and we like our 2x Spicy. Give you the spicy feeling around your lips. If you don't like spicy you can do regular or just spicy. However if you come around 6:30pm on Friday, pack your patience. 6 is about the first wave of diner and its already a full house at 6:30 pm and we were third on the waiting list. About 20 mins wait for us but we notice that there were a long wait after that. So note to self would be to come here before 6pm or after 8pm. Place was not busy. Seated right away. Ordered 1/2 dozen oysters on the half shelf and they brought us 3 dozens. Wrong table. I ordered blackened catfish tacos. It looks more like sauté. (check out picture). I asked waiter about it. He said yes it's supposed to look like that and then said oh sorry, then walked away. Food was not hot and service was okay. Not coming back. So I have been into this location I'm going to say five times and today has by far been the worst I received a pound of crawfish as I always get with mushrooms corn potatoes and onions today I receive I don't even think it was a pound unseasoned I asked for spicy corn was cold no potatoes service was horrible don't know the guy's name but it was bad ask to talk to the GM and was told to call on Thursday to talk to the GM. I mentioned that I was not going to pay the 2567 for the food that I did not eat they literally took $2 off $2.31 off to be exact I do recommend this place but not on the night that this young man is working or whoever the people are in the back that are cooking I'm going to show you a picture of what I had just last week and what I received today totally different even down to the customer service. Service was slow I had to get up and ask for sweet in low after setting there for 5 min. Food wasn't very good boudin balls was cold in the middle, crawfish had been cooked a while because they was soft, shrimp was over cooked you couldn't even peal them they would fall apart. It's a cool place but employees seemed like they didn't care. My bill alone for 1lb of shrimp 1 lb of crawfish and an order of Boudin balls was $53 not including the tip. It hurts to leave this review because we have been a patron of this establishment for over 5 years now. We love the viet cajun style seasoning and this was my go to spot for crawfish and shrimp boil. We would wait hours for a table and didn't mind because it was so good. We tried ordering here in February as soon as crawfish season started back up and we got a horrible bag of tiny overcooked crawfish runts. The shrimp was so overcooked it was not peel-able. Thinking this was a one off issue. Today we decided to give it a second chance again crossing our fingers that the quality was hopefully going to be like it used to be in the past years that we've ordered. Unfortunately, we were disappointed yet again. When we got to the restaurant to pick up our to go order another patron had already been complaining that the crawfish was mushy and inedible. Should have turned around and left with that warning. She was right. It was so mushy and grainy it was like squeezing toothpaste out of the shells. The corn was so overcooked too they shrivelled up. The fried mushrooms were not crunchy but soggy. I ordered around lunch time and i dont know if the quality differs based on time of day. But this is no excuse. I now need to go and find a new viet cajun crawfish place to support because after two consecutive bad experiences this has ruined this place for us. read more
