As soon as you walk into this spot, it feels truly transformed. It's like a time capsule of old timey New Orleans. We tried to go to happy hour with my partner's parents, but that was only available in the bar area. Given they have some health problems to consider, we could not move over and hover over teeny tables to have dinner so had to handle full price. At full price, I'd give it a solid 3.5. Bumped to a 4 because this is hard to find around here. We got: - shrimp yoli (if you only order one dish, get one with this SAUCE. It's to die for. We had to kill time in Austin so hubby decided to try the French Quarter since it was on his list and close to our destination. It did not disappoint! We did not make reservations, I'd advise you to do it. However it was worth the 40 minute wait. The restaurant is very cozy with low lights. Great for a date or dinner party. We skipped the appetizer since we were running late but we will try one the next time. They bring you large flakey rolls and seasoned butter. Hubby had the catfish ponchatrain with red beans and rice and carrots. I had the beef and shrimp pasta with a brandy cream sauce. The food was so good! Our server Brooke was great. She made sure that we had everything we needed and our experience was good. Hubby ended the meal by getting the blueberry cheesecake and key lime pie to go. However, as we waited, another customer told us that the bread pudding was excellent. Then another customer told us that the chocolate cheesecake would give the bread pudding a run for its money. But as we sat and watched, several tables had the blueberry cheesecake brought to them to go. So I'd say leave room for desert! read more

My friend's been wanting to try French Quarter Grille, and I've been meaning to visit again, and I definitely had a much better culinary experience this time around! The dishes are really fresh, and the seafood is so delicious. Service is great, but I feel like they came around so often that our dinner conversations were constantly interrupted. I really enjoy the house bread and seasoned butter, and my friend's fish entree was so buttery and soft. I really like oysters Rockefeller, and they fry the oysters so well! I think they might have accidentally given me the wrong pasta dish because I was expecting noodles (I'm pretty sure that's what I said and ordered), but the stuffed pasta was still quite good even though I am not typically a stuffed pasta fan. This has been on my list for quite some time and finally made it! The close a tad early, 9pm on a Friday night and we arrived shortly after 8pm. Got the ecargot, calamari, blackened Redfish with veggies and parmesan mashed potatoes with my friend getting the shrimp and steak pasta. Escargot was good, only recommendation is to add more garlic! Calamari was the main part of the squid, no tentacles on the plate and fried perfect with a great coating/breading. The blackened RedFish had a lemon cream sauce that was unbelievable, I wanted to lick the damn plate afterwards. Everything went in that sauce, the veggie, potatoes and fish. Sadly none of the desserts caught our eye and we left a few after 9pm. Overall great service with friendly disposition and she was kind to give a bit of background knowing this was our first time visiting. Vibe was chill and laid back, not too busy but the bar did perk up a bit after we arrived. Seating was comfortable and the music fit the vibe. We nabbed a bite at this place after a movie. The interior has dark brown tones. The staff explained the menu to us as it was our first time eating there. Parking was straight forward, as it is in a strip mall kind of plaza. To access the bathrooms, walk past the bar. I was excited to see escargot on the menu, since I like a good snail. It was garlicy, buttery, parmesany, and excessively salty, so it was not as enjoyable as it could have been. I did, however, mop up the excess garlic butter cheesiness with some bread. For mains, we got the Catfish Portchantrain and the French Quarter Salmon. Catfish Portchantrain: This was great, savory, with a slight spiciness to it. Got it with mashed potatoes, and the veggie of the day which was zucchini and yellow squash; no complaints about those. Would order again. French Quarter Salmon: I can't say the crab bits with chopped tomato were particularly appetizing. The salmon was nicely cooked. It also came with basil pesto and prosciutto slice. Opted for the dirty rice and the veggie de jour (the zucchini and yellow squash). Definitely a step down in flavorful fun from the Catfish Portchantrain. Dessert: Orange Creme Brulee -- creamy, orangey. Sugar-wise, it was at the sweet spot. Overall thoughts: I would return to this restaurant if I happened to be in the area. Does the food occupy a pleasant space in my mind? Sort of. But not enough to keep me coming back weekly. I think, though, this is more of a once-every-three-to-twelve months kind of place, unless there are some hidden gems on the menu. Came here for a work lunch yesterday and I love this spot! My stepdad is from New Orleans and makes the best gumbo and red beans and rice and I think he would definitely approve of this spot. We shared the fried green tomatoes and calamari as an appetizer and both were great but the calamari was excellent. I ordered the catfish gumbo and chose red beans and rice for my side and everything was fantastic. Awesome flavor, you can tell they take their time making this food. Service was great! I started with the crab cakes, which only had about three small pieces of crab each. The breading tasted more like hush puppies and had a slightly acidic aftertaste. For my main course, I ordered a ribeye cooked medium well, served with zucchini, squash, and dirty rice. The ribeye came out well done and was noticeably underseasoned. The dirty rice was honestly unpleasant--aside from a bit of heat, it just tasted like plain ground meat mixed with rice and lacked any real flavor. The zucchini and squash were overcooked, though the taste was decent. I also had a strawberry margarita, which tasted like it was made with Gloria's pre-mixed margarita blend--not terrible, but nothing special either. Disappointing and pricey. I was craving Cajun and was excited based in the many stellar reviews. But the flavor is just non-existent here. We made reservations, specifying a booth, but were seated at a table instead. The staff was friendly and helpful with any questions we had. We ordered escargot and Oysters Rockefellar. The escargot was okay and the Oysters Rockefellar were not oysters and nothing like other versions we'd had before. While it wasn't bad, it wasn't good and certainly not what we thought we had ordered. We got the grilled ribeye steak and the special of the evening, a Blackened Chilean Seabass in a jalapeno coconut rum sauce with dirty rice and cabbage. We also got a cup of Seafood Gumbo. The steak was cooked exactly right and tender, but didn't have a bit of seasoning to it. The seabass was tough in some spots and NOT blackened. There was literally no flavor at all. The sauce, which was incredible, was the only thing that made it edible. The dirty rice and cabbage was pretty good...we were so thankful for this. The gumbo was not like any other I had before - BLAND and super thin. And it was very large for a "cup". We also ordered the chocolate cheesecake and bread pudding. Both were okay, but not mind blowing. The server noticed we didn't eat the gumbo and didn't want it to go, so asked if we didn't like it. Embarrassed, we admitted that we didn't like it, so she said she would get it removed from our bill. It was still listed when the bill arrived, and we ended up paying for it. We didn't intend to ask for it to be comped, but if you say you will, then I expect you to follow through. When I visit a creole/Cajun restaurant, I expect flavor and spice, but this was bland throughout. And the price is too high to justify another visit. read more

I have ..... feelings. I'm from southeast Louisiana so my standards for Cajun and Creole food are extremely high. I try to leave my bias at the door and enjoy the experience for what it is, but that doesn't always work. This is definitely a Creole/Nouveau American place and not Cajun, which is a point in its favor. That said, for every point in its favor, there is one NOT in its favor, hence my conflict. The ambiance is just okay. You will not walk in and feel transported to New Orleans. You're definitely still very much in Austin. It was a Friday evening and the weather was perfect for gumbo, so a wait was not unexpected. After a very short wait of less than 10 minutes, we got a table. Our booth was cozy and comfortable but our table was covered with a removable hard plastic top. Our server came to take our order. She was lovely and efficient, but mispronounced words a few times. Admittedly, these are words that are not Standard American English, but if this is where you work, it's literally your job to know these words. She took our drink order and the drinks came out a few minutes later, accompanied by some delicious, warm, flaky bread and soft whipped butter. This was great. Love the bread and butter. The drink, on the other hand, was not great. I ordered a Hurricane which is hard to mess up, but it was still somehow wrong. However, if you happen to drink more than one, you won't care what it tastes like. To start we ordered the Oysters Rockefeller and a bowl of gumbo to share. The gumbo was.... just okay. The roux was dark brown but a little too thin. It was also missing something. Maybe some thyme? Tarragon? Something was missing. It also had zero spice. I don't like spice, but I expect it in gumbo. There was none to be found. The gumbo uses okra, and *possibly* filé as well, but I couldn't detect any. The Oysters Rockefeller... I cannot overstate how bizarre this was. Even now, I'm taking deep breaths trying to process what happened. This is something inspired by, but NOT oysters Rockefeller so don't order this thinking that's what you're getting. It isn't. We received a plate with 6 shell shaped depressions filled with spinach, cream, broth, and cheese, and allegedly oysters, though neither of us could detect ANY. Were they chopped up? Were they just small? Unclear. And then they were topped with fried oysters?? I had to go back and look at the menu to carefully read the description to make sure this was correct, which I shouldn't have to do. I am still reeling from this. Had the flavor been out of this world, we wouldn't be here, but it was just okay. Our entrees came out. My companion got the stuffed catfish with red beans and rice and sautéed carrots. I got the shrimp and crawfish tortellini. The creole sauce on the fish was nice but I'll be damned if that wasn't the best red beans and rice I've ever had in a restaurant. Dark, rich, not overly spicy, good balance of meat and beans, not too much rice... THAT was perfect. I can't believe the same kitchen produced these beans. But then I tasted my own food and for the first time in 20 years, had to add salt to my dish in a restaurant, which is what pushed this review down from 4 to 3 stars. There is no excuse for this. My companion tasted their carrots and those were unsalted as well. We did not have dessert. We paid and left. This was not my first visit, but it is definitely my last. I love the Cajun feel of this place! You walk in and you can see the chefs making your meal, I usually just walk up to the bar to eat. You get fresh bread for free as you wait for your meal and the bartender can make any drink you can think of! She literally made me a delicious sangria on the fly. Visited here twice while in Austin on a girls trip - once in restaurant and the other to go. When you walked in, it felt like you'd been transported to New Orleans. That's great since the restaurant in a shopping strip in a busy Walmart parking lot. There were some unsavory characters hanging outside the restaurant but everything about the restaurant was nice. We were tucked away in a quiet area of the restaurant. Our server was extremely nice and knowledgeable. They provided freshly made bread which we quickly gobbled up. We started with chicken and sausage gumbo, shrimp gumbo, and fried green tomatoes. The roux on the gumbo was the perfect color and it was so flavorful. My friend loved the tomatoes. We all ordered the same thing - catfish ponchartrain with dirty rice and red beans & rice. We had zero notes. Everything was on point. Very good Cajun cuisine. I am from New Orleans so I am a tough job. I thought everything was great. The red beans may be the only thing that didn't quite taste like the New Orleans red beans I'm used to but it was still delicious nonetheless. I will definitely come back and try other items and see how they stack up to New Orleans but this is my fav New Orleans inspired place in Austin I've been to so far.
