It resembles a church hall where you would go following service, so quite cozy. The workers were extremely sweet, professional and attentive. So that part was all good. Now the food! So we ordered oxtails, collards and Mac and cheese along with turkey wings, yams and rice. I was shocked at the oxtail portion as well as the quality of the collards. (I eat ALOT of veggies and I swear they tasted like spinach) and if they were collards, they were completely and throughly overcooked. The Mac and cheese had flavor but was very dry. And the rice was simply rice smothered in a cup full of gravy. The wings had a strange taste to them but maybe it was the seasoning used. Yams were just ok nothing special and again, the soupy rice! (LOL) The thing is that the people who work there are soooo nice. It's hard to give this place an unkind review. But, they need to make some flavor profile upgrades. And if oxtails are too expensive, then take them off the menu or adjust your price because serving 2 oxtails and 1 micro bone in the corner does not equate to $17.00. That dish was just all wrong. We talked about whether or not we would go back and give the place a second chance....not really sure. Maybe it was a bad day? It was clear that the community loves them by the way patrons gave shout outs and genuine smiles as they entered the restaurant. The workers there certainly are friendly and just so darn sweet and attentive. I wonder if that amazing hospitality and service provides shade for some of the issues with taste, portion and price. I would probably recommend Porters mildly only because it is a neighborhood soul food spot, working to cater to the community. But a few tweaks are necessary.

I never had a pork chop sandwich, so I decided to give it a try. I was surprised to see it was none-in, but tasty for sure. I did t expect it to be just a pork chop on a sandwich roll. Wondering if I should have included toppings. The waitress didn't ask so I just went with the flow. I did ask for hot sauce to kick it up a notch. The waitress was very nice and attentive. The menu has a lot of comfort foods on it. The atmosphere is casual and relaxing. Check them out!

Excited to find a soul food restaurant on our trip . Amber worked really hard and as efficient as…read moreshe could since she was the hostess , waitress and answering phones. However I would recommend having shorter nails for food service , nails looked too close to my food during drop off. The popcorn shrimp and nuggets are frozen then fried perfect for kids , not adult taste buds . The smothered pork chops were tooo tough to eat to, unable to even cut with the steak knife provided, and difficult to chew and swallow , but the gravy and onions were good (I mixed that with my mac and cheese ohh good ) . The mac & cheese and sweet potatoes were good. The corn bread, sweet tea and butterfly shrimp were amazing. The cabbage was very mushy, was able to eat some with hot sauce. The seating was comfortable And the restaurant and restroom is clean. The scent of the soap in the restroom was amazing. I would come back but only for the corn muffins.

You order at the end, and find a seat. Your name is called and you pick up at the side counter. The dining area has plenty of seating, a private room looks available to reserve? Dining area & restrooms are bright, clean and inviting. My brother ordered fried fish with a chicken wing,, cabbage and sweet potatoes. He loved the fish & chicken- well seasoned without feeling your blood pressure rise as you indulged- LOL. The sides were good. I did the smothered porkchops - WOW, best that I have had - really enjoyed the main entrée and my sides (greens, black-eye peas). Both meals came with cornbread (another option was a biscuit). I have to say the food, the Staff and the establishment has been my best taste of southern cooking in the DMV area. I ordered chicken wings (6) to go for wife & I to enjoy later. Definitely worth a visit, we will be back - The smothered chops are calling me already. Lunch for two with a take home order of wings & 2 deserts plus tip was around $100.

The fish (catfish and croaker) always tastes like it's been fried in grease that needs changing. There's no flavor profile in the food which is weird for a soul-food restaurant. The mixed veggies were absolutely disgusting-- gave them back. I paid $65 for fried catfish with two sides, fried croaker with two sides, a cookie and two drinks---and sadly, the only thing that was sort of worth it was the cornbread, but it tastes like it has coconut in it. I hate coconut. The item that was the most flavorful for me was the black eyed peas/hoppin John (minus the big pieces of fatty meat in them).
