Reviews here are deceiving. It's mediocre food at best if they even have what you're craving for.... Held in the Roses shopping strip mall, modestly decorated and poorly maintained. Southern home cooking but no chicken livers, asked for fried catfish and was denied, asked for fried trout and again was turned down. Ty said whiting was available which I'm not a big fan of but ordered it. It came out nice & hot but she didn't offer any cocktail sauce nor tartar sauce. Mildly seasoned breading, nothing spectacular. My dinner party ordered pork chops and cheeseburger, both mediocre. Ty waited on the next table over and she didn't deny them catfish and gave them a choice of cocktail or tartar. When we asked for a refill, again she said they're out.... I love this little strip type mall, and this time while I stopped by the book store, I decided to have dinner here. My mozzarella sticks came out hot and stretchy! Yum! I never had a pork chop sandwich, so I decided to give it a try. I was surprised to see it was none-in, but tasty for sure. I did t expect it to be just a pork chop on a sandwich roll. Wondering if I should have included toppings. The waitress didn't ask so I just went with the flow. I did ask for hot sauce to kick it up a notch. The waitress was very nice and attentive. Excited to find a soul food restaurant on our trip . Amber worked really hard and as efficient as she could since she was the hostess , waitress and answering phones. However I would recommend having shorter nails for food service , nails looked too close to my food during drop off. The popcorn shrimp and nuggets are frozen then fried perfect for kids , not adult taste buds . The smothered pork chops were tooo tough to eat to, unable to even cut with the steak knife provided, and difficult to chew and swallow , but the gravy and onions were good (I mixed that with my mac and cheese ohh good ) . The mac & cheese and sweet potatoes were good. The corn bread, sweet tea and butterfly shrimp were amazing. The cabbage was very mushy, was able to eat some with hot sauce. The seating was comfortable And the restaurant and restroom is clean. The scent of the soap in the restroom was amazing. I would come back but only for the corn muffins. read more

Stopped in after reading the yelp reviews. It did t disappoint. Small mom and pop in a strip mall. Lots of gawdy decor of roosters and pigs. But the food was gooooood. Well seasoned, hot and good portions. We got the hamburger steak, smothered pork chops.. perfection. We were taking the coastal route to Pennsylvania. It was dinner time and sometimes on the coastal route places to eat are a little limited. We came across Kendall's Country Kitchen. We figured it would be nice to get out of the car and sit down to eat versus drive thru and eat while on the road. When we walked in we just did not get that warm fuzzy feeling. Not sure why. Once we were seated we placed our beverage order. After that we placed our order for our meals. They were out of a few things which was a little disappointing. Not sure if that due to covid, or they actually sold out. They definitely do a lot of take out orders. I ordered the fried shrimp with a side of mashed potatoes and apple sauce. My meal was not too bad. The shrimp were large and crispy. My son had clam chowder and salad. No issues there. My daughter had a BLT with fries. My husband did not enjoy his meal. He had bones in his fried fish. He get that it was too many. He did not like the gizzards, and his sides were cold. It was just off being there and the food was just meh. Driving back to NY after a relaxing family vacation in quaint Sandbridge Beach, VA, we were all starting to get hungry. We all agreed that we did not want to stop for fast food, which is all we kept seeing along the way. A road service sign led us to this restaurant and we couldnt be more thankful. Coming from NY, we rarely, if ever get authentic soul food, and were not going to pass up on this chance. Located in an unassuming strip mall, Kendall's Kountry Kitchen was a 40 seat adorable restaurant. When we arrived there was a large family party, but the rest of the restaurant was quite empty. After being seated right away, we saw as the restaurant slowly began to fill up. By the time we left, the enture place was full. Our waitress Jemiah (sorry if I am spelling that wrong) was so sweet and welcoming. Our orders for drinks and food were taken right after she introduced herself. We ordered 2 of the fried chicken meals and one pork chop dinner. Each came with two sides and cornbread. We all shared the sides and were able to all try the mashed potatoes, baked apples, collard greens (we got two orders-they were out of fried okra) macaroni and cheese and the corn pudding. All amazing! Our mains were all cooked to perfection, served piping hot and tasted great. The waitress explained that all meals were cooked to order and to expect about a 20 minute wait. (Just something to remember if you are in a rush). Thankfully we had plenty of time and must agree that this is a meal that should be savored and given a generous amount of time to consume. We left nothing on our plates! I also ordered a bread pudding to take home (stuffed from the meal) and enjoyed it on my way home. The food, hospitality and general vibe of this place was refreshing and not something we come across often living up north. Our family of four (my wife, two sons - 15 yrs, 13 yrs, and I) enjoyed takeout dinner here on a Sunday in late December during a winter stay in Onancock, VA. Given the limited number of dining options available between Christmas and New Year's, we were delighted to see that Kendall's Kitchen was open. It's located in a strip mall on US Route 13, near the traffic light for Route 179 (which goes to Onancock). Lots of free parking and friendly staff. The pulled pork (melted off the bone) and cornbread were highlights. The restaurant had sold out of collard greens, so we had the spinach instead. I liked the yams, but they were really sweet (almost like a dessert). The broiled trout was OK, but not as delicious as the pulled pork. My wife was hoping to order the trotters (pig's feet), but they had sold out by 5:30pm. If you're driving along Route 13 and looking for a southern-style lunch stop or early dinner, I would recommend Kendall's Kountry Kitchen. Please note they are closed on Mondays. Traveling through the area and found this sweet little diner on Yelp with good reviews. Being from the South I know soul food and this place did not disappoint. This is the 3rd time going to this place and I have to say, GRAND SLAM each time! Today was a soul food favorite, hamburger steak with fried onions and mushrooms with a dark brown gravy over the steak, and a side of green beans, mac n cheese and collards with cornbread! I have no words to describe how good it was! My wife said it best, it was if you went back home to moms house! Outstanding with sweet tea to boot! Wish I had 2 stomachs! It was great when they opened... but tonight I was served THE TOUGHEST butterfly shrimp. I truly did not think it was possible to be that tough. My husband got drum ribs, the majority of which was inedible skin. The fried okra ended up being the highlight of the meal. It will be a long time before we come back. The best Chicken and Dumplings anywhere. Many make this claim, but few deliver. I got the CandD with a side of dumplings and corn pudding. It can't even explain how good it was. You wait a while so don't be in a hurry. The food is definitely worth every minute you have to wait. Only drawback is they are only cooked on Saturdays. Just make plans accordingly. read more

We stopped in over the weekend because our first choice had closed. The the only reason I'm giving a second star is because the service was friendly and attentive. The food was AWFUL. One of our party actually became sick shortly after dinner. We started with fried chicken livers which were overcooked and completely without seasoning. The pulled pork (they were out of ribs) was flavorless without its sauce, which was over-sweet. The smothered pork chops were fried into leather and their gravy clearly came out of a can. Most of the veggie side dishes were OK, if bland, but the fried okra had the consistency of having started life in a freezer bag. The cornbread was pretty good, but not enough to save the meal. You really expect something called "soul food" to have been made with time and love. Our meal was anything but. We would have been better off going to a chain for a burger. This is a wonderful place: clean, bright and friendly atmosphere. Staff is warm and welcoming, yet fast and efficient in service delivery. We were stopping here for dinner on our Christmas road trip. Well, Christmas came early for us this year: the food were delicious, portion generous, and treatment just the way mama used to cook. We ordered fried chicken liver as appetizer, crab soup, and for entrees, we had scallops, trotters, and catfish. All three were spectacularly home runs in my book. The various sides can do with a tad more salt, but that's a problem that is easily remedied, unlike the reverse problem (too salty) which would be disastrous. Kendall came out to greet us and we had a great chat. She reminded me of the old Chinese remedy of hot tea after a rich meal. It was a good move the food was completely authentic Eastern shore cooking. I had never tried beef liver and onions and it was really good served with corn pudding ( amazing) and mashed potatoes with a healthy dose of gravy. My husband got clam fritters which were interesting and he really like them and had grown up eating them. His meal was accompanied with collard greens and macaroni and cheese which I ended up stealing because it was so good. We ended our meal with lemon meringue and that also very good. We asked the daughter (mom and dad cook daughters out managing the restaurant )what's the best thing on the menu and she said by for the ribs but unfortunately that night they were completely sold out. We looked around and everyone seem to be getting fried fish which looked like a huge piece and was cooked well from a distance. As you can see I give it five stars the only negative was that the meal took a really long time to come out but it's really not a complete because it was all very good but just give yourself some time if you're going there. I'm giving it one star because I can't seem to give it 0 stars. Went to Sunday dinner yesterday about 1:15 and was sorely disappointed in the service. Once seated, it took over 15 minutes for our drink order (tea) to arrive. It took another 15 minutes before a different person took our meal order. It was over 45 minutes before we got our meal and I had to ask to get it. We did not get silverware until after the meal was delivered. I'm still not sure who was assigned to our table since there were over 4 different people who took portions of our order and/or serviced the table. It appeared very unorganized the entire time we were there. We have eaten here many times since it opened and the food was always good in the past. Unfortunatly, yesterday's meal was "off" and not up the standards we had come to expect from previous experiences. We may go back at some point in the future but we don't plan on returning anytime soon. read more
