Lets just say, it's is oh son refreshing to be able to get well seasoned, gloriously cooked soul food in the town of Salisbury. My wife ordered fried flounder and I ordered broiled flounder. We kept going back and forth eating from each other's plate because everything was tasting great! The service was great as our waitress was attentive to our needs and the atmosphere of the place is just as good with light jazz playing. We stopped here with a large party of 15 after attending a viewing of a very close family member. We all wanted to check this restaurant out for some good ole soul food. The food was really good. The fried catfish was perfectly fried and seasoned. The food took a minute before coming out but, we were a large group so it was expected. Everyone was pleased with the food and service. I may sound a little biased, but I believe The Candied Yam is one of the Best Restaurants on the Eastern Shore bar none. For those with patience who elect to eat on-site, the food is consistently hot and delicious. Lately, the deserts of bread pudding & peach cobbler have taken it over the top! Nobody comes close. This is my 4th time visiting this establishment and really have tried to give them the benefit of the doubt several times, but the ridiculousness just gets worse. They really need to hire an established culinary consultant and competent staff to show them how to be professional and organized. The best I have experienced from them was when they were in the smaller location by the mall. Service was still extremely slow, but at least the food was good. I went there for Mothers Day in 2023, then tried it again for Mother's Day 2025 and I would think if you know you will get slammed for holiday's like these, you would be better prepared, but no, it got worse, the only difference is now they offer a buffet and I am guessing because it was too hard for them to keep up with individual orders during high traffic holidays. In 2023, we had a party of 7-8 and it took over 2 hrs to get seated, then another hour or so to get our food. The food was actually good that time. Now, move to 2 years later, 5/11/25 and we had reservations for 5PM, arrived 15 mins early and weren't seated until almost 5:40PM. The waiting area was completely packed and they had the buffet exit line going into the packed waiting area, where people who fixed their plates had to duck and dodge the guest waiting for tables so their plates wouldn't get knocked over, not to mention the guest waiting talking over the food. There was nobody really monitoring/ guiding the buffet area. After we were seated, we sat for another 20 mins before anyone even came to our table to take our order. We were all getting the buffet and when the waiter finally came dressed highly unprofessional (durag and a fake iced out Cuban Linx chain) he took our drink orders and told us we can get in the buffet line. Once we returned to the table with our plates (20 mins later) still no drinks. Now 40 mins has passed and still no drinks, so I had to go over to the manager to ask about them and she said he was making them now. Now these weren't cocktails, just water and lemonade and half of our party couldn't finish their food or get seconds, because they were so thirsty. Now here is where the ridiculousness hits a peak, the buffet itself. The food on the buffet was cold, because they didn't clear the buffet and put fresh food out from the 3 -5PM buffet rush, they just dumped new food on top of it and mixed it up, leaving the food way below proper serving temperature to prevent bacteria from growing and for the food to even be enjoyable. They had fried chicken (cold and dry), baked chicken (cold and dry), ham ( looked like sliced lunchmeat with pineapples on top), roasted turkey (looked like sliced lunchmeat), bourbon glazed salmon (cold and overcooked), fried shrimp (looked like salad shrimp and cold), fried oysters (cold and overcooked so bad they tasted like fried chicken livers), fried fish (they didn't put that out until the end), greens (ok, until I found the rawish fatty whole strips of bacon nestled in there), string beans (same issue as greens), gravy (didn't try) and rolls (didn't put any out as advertised). They barely replenished the buffet when the food got low or empty and their was a huge crowd of people who paid their hard earned money waiting for food. I even heard the servers arguing with the kitchen to not put new food out, then watched the server scoop the fried shrimp in the serving pan on the buffet with his bare hands For $38 per person for a soul food buffet, much more was expected as I have experienced much better. Overall, it was ghetto, loud, unprofessional, poor service, poor food and it gave the impression that ownership was more concerned about profit and their friends who visited than the quality experience you provide patrons. That was really slick to offer a buffet, but refuse to put fresh food out and even not replenish the food when it is empty in a timely manner, so the notion of an all you can eat buffet was a joke, because everyone really only got one plate of cold food, because nobody would put new food out. I really hope they don't think about expanding until they can get their current spot under control. read more

Seriously good food! When the leftovers are a hit - you just know! I decided to try this restaurant out. It is hard to find really good food on the Eastern Shore in Maryland but this place is a hidden drive. From the moment I walked in the door - I was well received. The prices are - well pricey - but worth every penny. I can taste it as I type. Mouth watering! The only complaint I have is they don't have cornbread, but yeast rolls instead. The lady at the front reminded me of an auntie and she gave me a side of Macaroni Salad (I didn't order their star player - yams! - so she wanted me to try the next best). It was soooo good....I know its NOT vegan mayo but it was good!!!! So good... The fish was fried nicely and tasty. The butterfly shrimp - 3 for $7.99 were quite huge (I prefer popcorn shrimp but these were breaded and fried well). The greens had meat!! I wasn't sure if it was pork, so I didn't eat it but my neighbor said they were exceptional. The sweet potatoe pie wasn't my fave. I would suggest trying a different dessert - only because it cost $3.99 I am only sad that I was a day early and missed the dressing...visit them!!! you gotta try it to believe it.... read more

Well, I went here Mother's Day weekend because my mother swore by it! But cannot... the service was nice, the lady was really sweet and understanding especially how many times I sent my sides back. The Mac and cheese had no flavor and it tasted like it was sitting in the water it was boiled in. The young lady took that back and brought me out so called collard greens. They did not taste like collards greens at all. I do not know what green vegetable that was but it was very disappointing. The young lady came back again and I ended up just getting another candied yam. I really didn't want two of the same sides but I was scared to try anything else. Pork chops were okay, kinda small but okay. I just wasn't thrilled at this point. Restaurant had a huge bar but guess what they did not have? alcohol! Worth seeking out! We just happened to pick this place seeing the photos on Yelp. When we arrived it was pretty busy with families enjoying a Sunday meal and one group celebrating a birthday. The fried catfish was soooo good. I don't think it could be done better. The fish inside was warm and moist and the crust had a real crunch with good flavor and not too salty. The chicken thighs were also similar crispy and juicy. My mom usually peels off the skin, but she couldn't resist eating it because it was so tasty! They are right to name themselves after the yams. Usually sweet foods turn me off, but we were all using our breads to get every last piece of yam...even after ordering seconds. That also goes for the greens. I've traveled through the south and used to work for a black owned business. These greens are good!! They retain their texture and have a rounded flavor that makes you feel like you could eat a whole bowl. My son loved the mashed potatoes. They had a great chunky texture with the skins and not drowned in butter or cream. The servers seemed genuinely happy for us to be enjoying the meal. There was a sense of hospitality. We would've NEVER found this place had it not been for Yelp. It sits on the corner of a small strip of stores with the USPS and a barber shop/hair salon. Even the sign isn't that noticeable from the highway. Don't let that fool you. Once you walk in, it's inviting. We were there during a weekday lunch hour. There were maybe 2 other occupied tables. It's a small dining room but cozy. My coworker ordered fried chicken, greens and mac n cheese. I ordered fried fish (trout), mac n cheese and greens. Before our food came, our waiter brought us some rolls with butter. Nothing fancy but it was a nice filler before the meal. Our food was delicious! My fish was fried perfectly. It had the right amount of crunch, not over fried and the sides were amazing. I would definitely visit this restaurant again if I'm working in the area. I really enjoyed my meal. I love their dumplings, potato salad, cabbage, etc. The staff are pleasant. If I had one negative, it would be that their baked chicken pieces are extra small. The food was amazingly good! They had live music and the server Calvin went above and beyond for us. I got the Turkey wings add gravy with greens macaroni and cheese and the candied yams. Definitely recommend adding the gravy to the turkey wings. The candied yams were out standing. The people i came with got the fried flounder which was made to order. They also raved about their food. Soooo, I located this place on Yelp and it was a great find as expected! This restaurant was very easy to locate and had convenient parking on site. Fantastic customer service! We were greeted as soon as we entered and received great recommendations of ribs, fish and chicken. My family and I went here go grab some good soul food and that's what we received. We ordered an 8 piece chicken, 12 wings (6 Old Bay, 6 Jerk), Yams and a Garden Salad. The chicken was cooked fresh upon arrival and was reflected in the taste. The only complaint I have is the wings were fried as hard as hard can get. I ordered everything to go so I was not able to show manager. The 12 wings are pretty good. Fried hard as well but not as hard. The Garden Salad was pretty good. Nice clean lettuce w a delicious Vinegarette dressing. The real MVP was the delicious yams. Oh em gee they were so so good that I could have ordered them alone and been 100% satisfied! They weren't too sweet yet, flavorful. Calvin, the manager, happened to walk by as I was pulled over and checking out a flat tire (sigh) at dusk the other night. He immediately offered to help and proceeded to find my donut and the tools, take off the busted tire, and install the spare. He was so considerate throughout (and kind about my complete lack of mechanical knowledge). He also refused my repeated offers to Venmo him or send a gift certificate as a thank you. Looked their web site to see what time they closed. It said 9pm. Called to confirm they said they were going to start shutting down at 8pm. I am traveling through and was trying to make it before they closed. Got there between 7:40 and 7:45 only to be told they were not accepting dining in guest. We explained we were from Florida but used to live in the area and really enjoyed their food. We were tolded we could only get take. We noticed their was a small group dining in but it didn't make a difference for us!!!!! If you tell someone you are closing at a certain time it usually means you are accepting guest until that time. But I guest not at the CANDIED YAM! read more

I Recommend the Stuffed shrimp First time ever eating at The Candied Yam. Ordered the stuffed shrimp and it is delicious! Crab imperial with huge chunks of lump crab meat over 3 jumbo shrimp. And the macaroni and cheese!! (Omg!) The dish seemed light in the carry out container, but the portions of the sides and entree was more than enough. I was full halfway through. This was one of the best meals I've ever had. The bourbon glazed salmon was to DIE FOR. It was soft and buttery and delicious!! I had candied yams (they live up to the name!) and green beans for my sides. The rolls that come before the meal we're light and puffy which is nice because they didn't fill me up before my meal and they were fresh it of the oven and still hot! I don't come this way often but if I ever do some back I will definitely be dining here again. My server was Brandon and he was absolutely lovely.
